Mazda MX-5 RF 2.0L 2021 review: is it worth £2,000 more than the Convertible?

- The MX-5 is one of the best cars to drive currently on sale, but does the added weight of the retractable hard top on the RF detract from the experience?
Let’s start with the numbers. The RF is only 50kg heavier than the soft top MX-5, which is impressive given that mechanical folding roof mechanisms can be seriously heavy. Our test car is the GT Sport Tech, meaning its gets a slightly stiffer suspension set up as well as sporty BBS wheels. We're also trying out the more powerful 2.0-litre SkyActiv-G model, which produces 182hp - 20hp more than the 1.5-litre model we tried earlier this year. So it is really worth the £2,000 premium over the soft-top Miata?

Great review Cam. My wife bought the exact same model earlier this month, and we absolutely love it. I'm 6'2 so it's not ideal for me but it's so much fun that any height issues I have just dissappear. The manual gearbox is a peach and the 2 litre petrol is easy to live with everyday, but can provide performance when pushed. We took the plunge now as how much longer will lightweight, naturally asperated sports cars will be on sale for? Can't wait until summer when we can have the top down 😎
Enjoyed your review!
I went for the RF. Its my only car. I use it for everything. I don't use it for tracking but for daily driving, B roads and roadtrips. I feel safer in the RF and its quiter on the motorway. I live in England so the RF is my overall preference.
Definitely for the uk need a proper roof when it’s raining 10 months of the year 😅 I’m from uk looking for a rf as a daily
Great car!
Waiting to pick up new model in Feb/ March 21
Rf for me it just looks soo sleek with the hardtop
Soft top all day long for me...but I live in the south of Spain and we have 320+ days of sunshine /year. Slightly more headroom in the soft top and, in my opinion, it just looks nicer with the top down vs. the RF with the roof retracted. Also quieter with roof down vs. RF. If I lived in a place with bad weather would I buy an RF- probably not. Drop top motoring is what the MX-5 is all about. Just my 2 cents.
It's always a matter of personal taste. That's the only thing that really matters when choosing either variant. I've always preferred the RFs stunning look. It looks a lot more refined in comparison to the soft top version.
how did you like driving in the rain with top down hard top
nd miata softtop can drive in light ran with the top down windows up. hardtop for looks and safety. soft top for performance and visibility.
First mass produced MX5 coupe. Except for the NC version roadster coupe. 😂
Rag top for me. No blind spots. And to say one is better than the other, it’s a matter of opinion Mazda are selling 50/50 % of both world wide.
Why do you have that annoying noise/music in the background
I thought you had left the indicator on for most of this video.
Mazda claims 181HP in a 2 liter engine. I don't think it is 184
Should be 184hp, which is 181bhp. Some manufacturers interchange hp with bhp, even though there's a small difference.
The only flaw in it's appearance is the hideously large license plate.
Hate those big plates you have.
They are mandatory in the EU/UK so you don't have much choice over here. ;)
@@deepblueskyK Just like the crazy taxes you have and regulations, My god are you people sheep?
@@richardgorski23 I wouldn't want to live anywhere else. Talking about crazy regulations, I'd really miss driving on the Autobahn at 120-130mph on a regular basis. 😄😉
@@deepblueskyK good for you. I bet you really enjoy all those taxes you socialist pay.
@@richardgorski23 Some people call it "socialist", others a well-founded and functional social market economy/ welfare state - in stark contrast to the US.
It's always in the eye of the beholder. 😁
