Yes. Now you are talking. Ah yes, A MX5 NC on lowering springs and 25 mm good quality spacers and become smitten, You will find every excuse to take it out for a spin. How does it compare with a RCZ. Well. They are different. One is a full roadster just flick the top open in 2 seconds when the sun comes out. It’s a priceless extra that the RCZ cannot match ...

    @tonyb1223 3 роки тому +1

RCZ-R owner here, owned mine from new, no real issues to speak of, though there are some specific issues to the R and some common issues across the range to be careful of.
Brake calipers. These along with the 308 GTi 270 suffer the same issue, the pistons are mild steel so will over time rust, this causes them to stick and can cause excessive disc and pad wear, a relatively cheap fix is to replace the pistons with a stainless item, costs a couple of hundred quid, or send off for a full refurb for around £4-500.
    HPFP (High Pressure Fuel Pump).
This is common across the 1.6thp range, its pot luck when they go, seen some go as little as 20k miles, others have done well over 100k miles with no issues.
Dealer will charge you the best part of £800 for one, maybe cheaper from BMW (as its a BMW part) or Citroen. Reconditioned units are available for around a third of the price of a new one.
    Timing chain and tensioner.
Another common issue across the 1.6thp range, one of two things you should never do if you get this problem is replace just the tensioner and never buy the cheap chinese kits.
Original spec PSA or a kit recommended by a specialist are what you want to go for, you should always replace the full kit because the tensioner may be only a part of the problem as the guides may break down, hence you replace the lot. Will set you back £900-1000 from a dealer, £4-500 from a good specialist.
    Electronics.
Not really a problem, the bulbs in the rear high level brake light can go, about £200 frim a dealer (the only place to get one really, avoid breakers yards for this part, they charge nearly the same for a part that could be as old as your car).
Window regulator, not that common, dealers charge around £200 for a new one, oem for £50-60.
Boot pops open when unlocking the car or opening the door.
Another easy fix, caused by water ingress in the switch, either replace the switch or remove some interior trim, clean and use some wd40.
    Service parts.
Brake Discs. Yes they are expensive, Peugeot want £1200 for the pair and £400 for the pads, good news is that they should last 50000 miles and that aftermarket pads are available for considerably less.
Shop around, the discs can be had for £800ish for the Alcons, you cannot get them direct from Alcon though, so don"t waste your time.
Tarox and Godspeed do cheaper replacement parts, £1000 for the Tarox and around £850 for Godspeed's.
    Sparkplugs.
This 1.6thp 270 unit must be maintained to a high standard, skimp on the maintenance and you will have problems.
Luckily its not that expensive compared to some cars out there, the spark plugs though, are replaced at every service, they add about £60-70 to the cost, the exact ones are only available from Peugeot.
    Other service items.
The gearbox/diff oil is classed as "sealed for life", its not, that is just car manufacturers for you, its another cheap job, even from a dealer who will charge you £45-60 usually.
    Oil.
You must use the correct spec and weight oil, don't skimp here either, abd do regular manual oil level checks, the 1.6thp is known to drink oil, if you rely on the electronic level indicator then expect the chance of big bills, mainly timing tensioners failing.
Overall, the vast majority of owners love their R's, they are usually pampered but they will be getting to the stage where the odd ropey one pops up now and again, watch out for the cars that started life off as track cars, there were several companies running these as driver training vehicles.
Standard tyres were Goodyear Eagle F1 Assy 2's, a decent spec tyre will be between £140-170 a corner, don"t buy cheap and get the tracking done every year as these are set quite agressively and can wear on the inside edge if not checked.

I've has an RCZ-R for a year now. Brilliant car. Looks amazing. Strangers just stare at it in admiration. The engine is great with a flat torque curve that pulls all the way to the red line. Little engine cars can produce a lot of power with a decent turbo. The more the power is used will cause the engine to have a short life. I drive a luxury saloon with a decent engine, superchargers and 380bhp. This is a car can not to be driven at full tilt very often, not because the car can't take it but because you can't drive on today's roads and stay alive for long. As a 981 Cayman S owner, if the 987 gets half the attention mine gets then I couldn't put it on any "underrated" list...I'll shut up about the GS eventually but that's definitely underrated (except by me...I probably drag the average "ratedness" up quite a lot ☺).
Definitely agreed on the NC MX-5 though and, as a Pug fanboy, I'd love an RCZ-R if I could just find one. Also agreed on the fun > fast analysis on the GT86. For example, an F13 M6 is stupid fast and entirely not fun. Drove that between the GS and 981 so it's probably not a bad car, but using those for perspective it's awful.
Edit XKR is great but you have to budget well over £1000 a year on tyres and have a big pool of cash in case it goes wrong. I briefly considered one.

The RCZ seems to get a lot of love, but I personally hate the damn things. If you drive one (and not just look at one). you will understand why people call them an ALDI TT.
The GT86 is a nice car let down by it's wheezy engine, low rent interior, and I wasn't that impressed with the handling either.
The Volvo is a brave pill, the ALFA is beautiful inside & out, but not much of a performer.
Quite like the Scirocco, decent quality.
The Cayman would be my choice, superb in every way.
Mate, you're dreaming if you think a 370Z can live with a Caterham on a trackday !!! Maybe a superb driver in the Nissan against a real novice in the Caterham, yes but like for like, not a chance.
The Merc is a nice cruiser, too heavy to have fun in though.
Jag is not that quick for the power output it has.
