the Phaeton is cheap becouse people are snobs and need a brand. I had one for 2 years now and spent under 1000 euros on repairs. I do not use the VW service but I have a good mecanic. The car is a dream, I feel special every day driveing one of the few manufactured cars avalable. Build quality is aparent everywhere, the dynaudio sound is great and the car is incredibly well insulated. Climate controll with humidity remuval is also special. I have the long 4 seater and that is what I recomend, if you get it go all the way. 15.000 euros will get you a reliable, afordable hand made car with 4 heated/ventilated massage chairs.

    • @davidk7262
      @davidk7262 4 роки тому +8

So true. Half the cars on this list get a bad rap for reliability because people stretch themselves to buy them and then can’t afford to maintain them.

    • @davefrance3721
      @davefrance3721 4 роки тому +8

@@davidk7262 I don't know about that. I have owned non luxury cars that have had no issues apart from normal wear and tear. Brakes, tyres, clutch etc..
The trap people fall into is thinking luxury cars are somehow of better quality and build and will give faultless service.
I owned a Jaguar X type basic model and it gave me 140000 miles of trouble free motoring before I sold it on. All I replaced was a battery and a clip that secured a hose to the intercooler. And of course tyres and brake pads.
I bought an XF 3.0 diesel s expecting it to be of the same quality. How wrong I was.
Despite it having the perfect life of daily leisurely motorway runs to work and back, and having it serviced well before the service schedules, I encountered many problems, including the alternator failing without so much as a warning light coming on, turbo actuator, inlet hoses, electric window mechanism, boot wiring loom, suspension bushes, and the final straw, the inlet manifold cracking in the cold weather.
That last job would have been over 8 hours labour and you can't just replace one of the manifolds you have to replace them both.
Many of the faults I had with that car were common faults but expensive to fix. I wish I had done more research into reliability before buying it..
You would think that the more expensive the car, it would at least be as reliable as the cheaper cars in the range.
      I learned a hard lesson.

I owned a 2011 Jaguar XJ for four years. Bought with 16k and sold with 90k on the clock. Having previously owned Mercedes C and CLS I’d say this is a superior car both in refinement and engine performance. Downside for me was not being able to buy a suitable roof rack or tow bar to carry bikes.
I may have been lucky but other than usual service and consumables such as tyres it was quite reasonable cost wise to own. In summary, I’d say the best car I’ve owned

I agree, for many years, that anybody can buy a new car...but to have a beautiful, classic look and restored.. that u cherry it out...is the mark of a great car enthusiast. And some cars never lose their beauty of design...will always be gorgeous...just refurbish the engine and doodads..and Voila! you have a fantastic vehicle and you paid a nominal price to own..even the refurbishing doesn't break the bank. There are some serious gorgeous cars to be had that have miles on them...but they are strong as ever. Just fluff them back up. I did that with all my jags.. XKE V12'S AND V6...1973 XKE V12 CONVERTIBLE 4SPEED MANUAL...WAS MY FAVORITE AND *ANGELO'S* IN L.A. MADE IT BEYOND PERFECT EVERY TIME... (THE BEST JAGUAR MECHANIC IN CALIFORNIA) I PUT A PAINT JOB OF WHITE-WHITE AND MANY COATS OF WHITE PEARL ON TOP... IT WAS A SHOW STOPPER AND PPL WOULD COME AROUND AND ASK FOR MY AUTOGRAPH SOMETIMES.. IT *WAS* PRETTY. IT WAS ILLUMINATED IN THE DAY AND UNDER THE MOON. ANGELO ALWAYS GAVE IT A GREAT TUNE ONCE A YEAR.. AND THE WAY I DROVE IT KEPT IT IN TUNE...MY FAVORITE AND MOST FUN CAR. WHEN I PURCHASED IT 2 YEARS OLD...I CHANGED ALL THE HOSES AND WHATEVER SMALL THINGS WERE NEEDED TO MAKE BRAND NEW *UP FRONT* ... AND I NEVER HAD ONE MOMENT'S PROBLEM WITH IT, OTHER THAN ONE FLAT PIRELLI TIRE, ONCE. AND ...IT BEAT OUT VETTES FROM A STANDSTILL AND WAS A JOY TO DRIVE AND RELY ON EVERY MINUTE. NEVER OVER HEATED, IDLED AT 7...TURNED ON LIKE A VOLKS WAGON.. *NEVER ANY ISSUE.* DROVE LIKE A DREAM. DON'T BELIEVE THE OLD HOGWASH ABOUT JAGUARS. THE OLD ONES WERE TERRIFIC. AND CAN STILL BE...JUST CHERRY IT OUT. GET A GOOD, OLDER MECHANIC WHO HAS THE CHOPS AND KNOWS HOW TO WORK ON THEM...BEFORE DIGITAL. YOU DO IT ONCE AND YOU'RE GOOD TO GO. AND BY THE WAY... IF THERE WAS EVER A EMP ATTACK ON OUR DIGITAL WORLD & VEHICLES...GUESS WHICH CARS WILL STILL RUN WHILE ALL OTHERS ARE STUCK RIGHT WHERE AND WHEN THE ATTACK TOOK PLACE. AND THEY ARE NOT MADE OF PLASTIC...NOR DO THEY HAVE PLASTIC BUMPERS MADE TO RUIN FOR AN AFTER MARKET SPREE...WANT TO TALK ABOUT NICKEL AND DIMING? YAH.. THAT'S THE NEW PLASTIC CARS. GEESH. ITS SO SAD.

Aussie here. Your video was very thought provoking and could influence my next ride. Local prices for most of these cars weren't anywhere near as painful as I'd expected. I've looked for examples that represent the best combination of purchase price, options, year model and mileage. It's also important to remember that Australian variations are usually better optioned as standard compared to UK/US variants:
    1. VW Phaeton 3.0 TDI V6 - This vehicle was never brought to Australia :-(
    2. 1987 Rolls Royce Silver Spirit 6.8 V8 - I found an example with ~60K miles for AUD $22,250 (~£12,000), so not bad considering
    3. 2009 Range Rover Sport 3.0 TD V6 - Cheapest I could find with similar mileage was AUD $24,000 (~£13,000). Again, not bad.
    4. 2011 BMW 730d 3.0 TD V6 - Found one with ~60K miles for AUD $28,800 (~£15,600), or a 2010 model with ~100K miles for $24,500 (~£13,250)
    5. 2011 Mercedes Benz S350 3.0 TD V6 - The cheapest I could find was an example with less than 90K miles for AUD $37,990 (~£20,500), so starting to get comparatively expensive.
    6. 2012 Jaguar LWB 3.0 TD V6 - By far the cheapest I found was AUD $37,800 (£20,400) for one with 130K miles, although $48,000 (~£26,000) for examples with ~55-65K miles was far more typical. No thanks.
    7. 2010 Lexus 450H 3.5i Hybrid - Japanese cars are definitely better value than European marques in Australia. An LS450H with less than 60K miles can be had for under AUD $20,000 (~£10,800). Still more expensive than the UK though.
    8. 2008 Porsche Cayenne S 4.8 V8 - While I can buy an MY06 with (wait for it) >200K miles for AUD $11,500 (~£6,200), I found a nice looking 2009 example with 60K miles for $29,000 (~£15,600). Again, not as bad as I'd thought.
    9. 2006 Maserati Quattroporte 4.2 V8 - As you mentioned, loads of variations here. I found a fantastic GT version with less than 45K miles for AUD $29,000 (~£15,600). Again, very surprising.
    10. 2008 Audi S8 5.2 V10 - A bit on the expensive side compared to your side of the pond, but a 2008 model with ~130K miles for AUD $42,500 (~£23,000) was the cheapest example I could find. $50,000 would get you an example with ~90K miles.
All in all, pretty surprising as I fully expected all the vehicles (at least the German and English marques) you listed to be 3 times the price.

I drive a 2009 Jaguar X type executive model and it is very luxurious. Ivory leather, heated seats, sat nav, hands free phone, etc, and that only cost me £4000. I have had it for almost two years and touch wood I have only had one problem with it, which was a problem with the turbo, but managed to get it fixed for only £170. It is extremely cheap to run and has been a brilliant car

Can't speak for the others but I just sold a GS450h and they are AWESOME. Worth paying more for an L10/Mk4 though, these older ones have dated interiors and the battery warranty is only 10 years so will have run out- they can overheat on the older model although it's rare.
Drivetrain is the same as the one I had though and I'll say this: drive one, get to 30mph, stick it in 1st/sport+ and floor it. I replaced mine with a 981 Cayman S and the Porsche wouldn't get near a GS doing that. It's no RS6 but nobody expects a hybrid to go that fast. Also it beat the Panamera in a handling test, just saying ☺ Yeah I still love that car...

Cayenne Turbo (I know you were talking about the S but most of the issues are common to both) was truly a vast money pit, strangely I didn't have a single electrical issue, 95% of the issues were coolant related (plastic water pipes everywhere, even the alternator was water cooled, and yes, I found that out when the feed pipe (plastic) broke) and the remainder of the problems were air suspension related. Epic car though but stick with Porsche's sports cars!

And by far the best I’ve ever owned and still have is the Lexus LS 460 - never had problem to be honest I was so impressed I bought two
However the Mercedes and BMW 7 series kept showing signs year after year with expensive maintenance with major parts failing
The Lexus LS 460 now nearly 12 years old nothing major has ever happened

My mate bought a 2007 Quattroporte sport GTS with 32K on the clock. It came with the variator done and he's put 70k miles on it in 4 years with not one issue. Obviously it's had 2 clutches in that time, one when he got it and the second after he'd done over 50K in it. He says just get the full auto box and you can't go wrong.. Its a hoot to drive with gurning grin driving guaranteed. Oh yeah, get rid of the useless Mazza Audio and sat nav, it's pathetic. Mate spent £1500 quid getting a pioneer system fitted by a specialist and it's brilliant..
As a left field choice of luxury car for between £5-7K, 2010 Honda Legend 3.5 V6 VTEC. AWD, typically brilliant Honda engine (295hp), and all the luxury goodies on offer.. My cousin is on his 2nd and put nearly 200K on the first one before giving it to his son, who's still running it 3 years later..

    they look expensive,because they are.
the only one that makes sense if you are on a budget is the lexus, but it is the ugliest one here.
    a coworker had one for 5 years and only spent 600 pounds/year on it,driving 20000 miles/year
when he sold it with 300.000 miles on the clock it was at the end of the road.
an is 250 is a much nicer looking car, which you can buy for just a few 1000 pounds.

    Cayenne S?
1.Owned a Turbo, but I would never recommend Cayenne S. This N/A version, especially the 4.5 is known to cause cooling leaks and overheat one of the cylinders. The Turbo or Turbo S is a better choice, because these engines were better built. You don´t get the better gauges with full LCD display. You get ones with pixelated screen. The S looks like it misses something at front, while Turbo looks more tough and aggressive, especially in Matte White which I had. If you are scared of breakdowns and unreliability, go for ones with 3.0 TDI.
You buy a Cayenne S if you can´t afford a Turbo or Turbo S. Best thing you will miss in Cayenne S? The ´´thrust mode´´ when you floor it´´.
    2. It´s true about the fuel economy. It´s ridiculous!! Good luck getting over 13 MPG in town!! Funny things is that the difference between S and Turbo/Turbo S aren´t big in terms of fuel consumption.
    3. It isn´t practical. The room in front and back is good, but the luggage room is quite small. It´s much worse than 2nd Gen V70.
    4. Electronics issues aren´t that bad. The one to break often is probably brake booster sensor, which will display Brake Booster Faulty on the display. Parking Sensors bug can be annoying too! Otherwise quite good.
    5. Parts are quite cheap. It shares many components with Touareg, like suspension, modules, sensors etc. However, there can be expensive parts, like front lights, starter motor and alternator (cooled one).

Always feel it's a massive shame when all these big manufacturers have been in the game for such a long time yet still have basic faults that they really should have ironed out by now.
Sure Issues will always need repaired but lots of the Issues you have stated and others some people will be aware of can only be put down as shoddy build quality.
Unless the second or thirdhand buyer has very deep pockets they are all best given a very wide berth, Id not touch any of they Range Rovers more so from the list as they are junk.

Rolls Royce ... It is a car of the past ... Even buying a new Rolls Royce does not give you access to, yes, it does not ... Today, the only Rolls Royce part is the Ecstasy ... I hail from a Roller family ... Buying an old / used Rolls Royce is a very risky business ... The Real Rolls Royce was known for its quietest engine. It purred like a kitten ... It was Merlin that went into boats and aircraft ... From 70 onward RR started using a little bit modified Chrysler's Engine ...it worked fine but did not sound the RR. Then it was bought by VW. Now Bentleys are souped up VW ... BMW, very quietly bought Ecstasy ...Today's RR are all souped up BMW 760 ...a great car in her own right ...Old RR are the best buys and value for their money. However, there is a snag. There is always a snag. It is the cost of their repairs. Most modern Car Mechanics don't ever know how to handle even a mundane job ... RR cars heavy. The weight plays a very negative part.. One needs to replace, brakes, suspension, shock absorbers and tubes ... All need special knowledge / experience and tools ... Buying a RR for £10,000 would need another £10,000 to get it up to mark ...But then you have a Real Car ... In my personal experience, a RR less than £50,000 is not worth looking at ... regardless what the vendor says and shows, cheap RR do not exist ... they are PIA ... It is worth paying money to get it checked out by a qualified and competent RR Mechanic before you fork out your hard earned money ...i sold mine some 20 years ago and bought a BMW 750 V12 ..with a Sports button pushed down, it is a monster of a car to handle and drive ...
