the funniest thing about this cover they could just ask mark lanegan to do the vocals but decided against it because people gonna mistaken this cover to tom waits remastered version....
For those who don't know, the screengrab is from From Dusk Til Dawn and that's Quentin Tarantino's boot hanging out the window of a 1970 Mercury Cougar. George Clooney is driving after they just robbed a gas station, killed the owner and torched the place. There's a kidnapped woman in the trunk.
The song has such a Queens feel to it, great idea for a cover. Also the photo you've chosen is perfect - this is serious US road trip soundtrack territory.
He's one of the only musicians who I'd say it feels perfectly natural for him to be singing Tom Waits songs. Josh Homme is the younger newer Tom Waits basically
just terrific....the best thing about artists like Mr. Waits, and our friends the Queens is that they don't give a shit if you like it or not.... and the bonus is that there's millions out there who would light their face on fire to be in the same room with such talent and vision.....
Robert Paulson i hear you, and honestly I couldn't tell you man... probably the same reason ,why people look at the Tom Waits portrait tattoo on my leg and ask the question, " Tom who?".... LOL..you just can't figure 'em out...... humans, strange creatures.
This song rules so hard. Both versions. And any future covers. Because if you're going to pay tribute and cover an artist of godly proportions, a Tom Waits song solidifies the fact that you have good taste. QOTSA was already beyond awesome before I heard this cover. Now, I'm exponentially confident of their excellence.
In French, there is a saying: "Les gouts et les couleurs ne se discutent pas." I believe the same thing about music. The only thing I don't understand is those people that say that that the riff ain't right, sounds nothing like the original,... I heard the song on the radio and recognized it on the spot. Nothing wrong with my ears, I assure you. This is brilliant, QOTSA. Nothing less than that.
I'm going out west where the wind blows tall Cause Tony Franciosa used to date my ma' They got some money out there; they're givin' it away I'm gonna do what I want, and I'm gonna get paid Do what I want, and I'm gonna get paid Little brown sausages lying in the sand I ain't no extra baby, I'm a leading man My parole officer will be proud of me With my Olds 88 And the Devil on a leash With my Olds 88 And the Devil on a leash I know karate, voodoo too I'm gonna make myself available to you I don't need no makeup I got real scars I got hair on my chest N'I look good without a shirt Well, I won't loose my composure in a high-speed chase My friends say I'm ugly, I've got a masculine face I got some drag-strip courage I can really drive a bed I'm gonna change my name To Hannibal Or maybe just Rex Change my name To Hannibal Or maybe just Rex I know karate, voodoo too I'm gonna make myself available to you I don't need no makeup I got real scars I got hair on my chest I look good without a shirt on Drive all night, get some speed I'm gonna wait for the sun to shine down on me I got a hole in my roof The shape of a heart And I'm going out west Where they appreciate me Going out west Where they appreciate me Going out west Going out west Gone...
I like different takes on good songs, great to see different interpretations of songs that obviously made an impact on the people who choose to mix up the original version.....
I think they do a pretty good job - they got that driving, pumping sound and I like the fact that the singer is doing his own thing with it - lets face it, only Waits can sing like Waits.
I like this version because it's brighter. It has kind of a reddish tone where the waits version is a dark whiskey brown. I like the Waits version too, but they are noticably different if you know what you're listening for. This has that California, driving, Fu Manchu stoner-rock, 'drive fast' thing going where Waits' is a grizzy blues rock cruise.
Here because my boyfriend performed me a striptease to this song, it was my 29th birthday. Never knew Queens covered Waits! Two of my favorite musical artists.
I used to have an Oldsmobile 88. it was an experience. I sure felt safe. Also, kind of badass from the compliments I got. For some reason many found it iconic. It made up for my friends making fun of me. What did they know? My Dad had bestowed it on me with a tone of reverence.
As someone that was obsessed with QOTSA in high school - and has this song emblazoned in my mind from watching Fight Club about ten million times ... Yeah. This fucks. Hard.
@ColmaKiddo It was the Ramones covering Tom Waits, not the other way round (I Don't Want to Grow Up). It's from the 1992 album Bone Machine and The Ramones did it on the 1995 album Adios Amigos.
This cover makes so much sense. I found this cover after listening to QotSA and Bone Machine a lot recently. Hearing this song by Tom Waits struck me as odd, considering his usual style. But I liked it a lot regardless. No wonder.
that's why this cover is great, because it conveys a completely different feel to Waits' original. You might need to re-read the comment you're replying to. It doesn't say the US revolves around California, nor does it say one version of the song is better than the other. It actually points out that Waits' version has a completely different feel. Don't get your panties in a bundle.
Wanna take a road trip out west or anywhere for that matter with my booted legs hanging out the vindow while boozing on.bootleg whiskey. and cranking up this tune . . . anybody game? Ain't got no hair on my chest, do you? GREAT TUNE AND VIBE!

+Guy Mann damn you where there???? you know them!??? wow that's awesome!!!!
nah man it's just a food for thought observation
+Guy Mann Never heard of him but Google imaged and holy balls, they must be related, they look like twins lol.
+Guy Mann this is on point haha is his son after all ;)
i personally love thought observation, but i like to shorten it to thoughtservation.

The song has such a Queens feel to it, great idea for a cover. Also the photo you've chosen is perfect - this is serious US road trip soundtrack territory.
I love how Tom and Queens do the song with guitars tuned down to C.🤘
That C tuning really compliments Toms voice
it's B, they key of the song: ua-cam.com/video/0_wqAcj6EBU/v-deo.html&pp=ygUSam9lIGdvcmUgdG9tIHdhaXRz

That both Tom and Queens even know what C tuning is, is the sign of the masters, even years later.
this needs to be in the next Borderlands I fucking swear
Wtf I found this song and this comment immediately after playing that "next" borderlands you spoke of
love playing fallout new vegas to this
There aren't many people I'd trust to cover Waits, but God dammit. That's a good cover.
This song was always a crowd favorite when we used to cover it!
This song literally made me move out west
respect to josh for having the courage of covering "Waits"

Yeah, but Kyuss though brother... Why are Queens so widely recognised, while Kyuss remain niche? Seems a crime to me.
Robert Paulson i hear you, and honestly I couldn't tell you man... probably the same reason ,why people look at the Tom Waits portrait tattoo on my leg and ask the question, " Tom who?".... LOL..you just can't figure 'em out...... humans, strange creatures.

I love playing this in my backyard,

Awesome cover of my favorite musician by one of my favorite bands.

I'm a die-hard fan of Mr. Waits and I like this cover.
Not really a Queens fan but they did a good job covering this. Has the Queens twist but the original rings through
I like different takes on good songs, great to see different interpretations of songs that obviously made an impact on the people who choose to mix up the original version.....
Really exceptional.
The best of both worlds.
Awesome! My favourite band covering my favourite singer-songwriter.
Both this and the original are amazing!
This is my favorite song ever. I’ve played this fuggin YT video so many times 😂

This cover is the gateway drug that lead to my Tom Waits addiction.
been a fan of Tom forever and QOTSA since, well since kyuss. This song puts me in mind of Jon Spencer Blues Explosion for some reason.
lmao, Goin' Out West (Tom Waits original) is the ringtone on my phone.

How meta that Robert Paulson commented on a cover of going out west...a song used in the same movie he inhabits. ;)

this is a pretty good cover actually. I'm very partial to tom waits but this isn't a bad cover at all. Nice work qotsa

This Cougar is actually from the Movie "From Dusk to Dawn" with Clooney and Tarantino .
