For me personally, it's Waits and Nick Cave. Two very different lyrical/storytelling styles. But, to me, equally gifted at giving you surprising lyrics that tell great stories and also work perfectly musically.

I'm glad I got sober, before discovering Tom Waits. I probably would've downloaded EVERY album he made, bought a case of whisky, put the music on shuffle, & proceeded to drink myself to death. Having said THAT, I'm glad that in sobriety, I can enjoy his music with a CLEAR head, and appreciate what a unique talent he is. I'm approaching 49 years on this planet, & he's my new hero. Warts & all!

In 1993 I got Bone Machine eventually wearing a groove in the CD. That afternoon I had already scored some speed and later on on my first playing of the tracks on my trucks stereo system I replayed this song since it was appropriate for the moment . The plan was to drive all night, but I already had some tweak so i made a slight change to the lyrics.
No one comes close to Tom Waits in the talent dept. I LOVE every evolution and he's changed drastically from beginning to now. The music is outrageously great too.
