Essentially, the Fallout 2 Bozar was the unholy hybrid of a machine gun and a sniper rifle, and it showed; there was very little in the game that could take a burst from this thing and live. Even the final boss would go down pretty quickly if you had the right perks.
You could argue the ultimate reason this weapon is bad in Vegas is that they failed to transition it from the turn based system to the shooter one, with VATS being the only saving grace.
@@nguyenquyetthang1326 a burst wespon would've required some extra animation and coding they likely didn't have the time for. Some mods turn it and other rifles into monsters, but Obsidian was kinda shorthanded. I assume they just added it in as a memoir.
A few notes: The Trigger Discipline Trait doesn't reduce the fire rate of automatic weapons while it still grants the accuracy bonus. This actually makes it the ideal trait for Burst-style Guns and Energy Weapons builds (SMGs, Automatic Rifles, Miniguns, Gatling Lasers, etc). The reverse is true - Fast Shot Trait doesn't increase the fire rate of automatic weapons, but does make them less accurate (which is ideal for accurate weapons with slower rates of fire like the Lever-Action Rifles, Anti-Materiel Rifle and Sniper Rifles). The 5.56mm ammo type also has the Match rounds that which can be made with the Hand Loader perk which grants accuracy and small damage bonuses. Also, and I'm sure FSOAS is aware of this although it wasn't mentioned, but weapon damage and critical hit rate in NV is partially tied to a weapon's condition: condition 75% and higher = more damage and critical hits compared to condition lower than 75% and scaling down until 0% condition. The "Ultimate refinement of the sniper's art" blurb is from the Bozar's weapon description from Fallout 2 where in development the weapon was intended to be Fo2's designated Big Guns Sniper Rifle, similar to New Vegas's Anti-Materiel Rifle (note how the Bozar resembles a greeble'd Barrett M82). However, this was allegedly changed during development so now that the Bozar, instead of being a single-shot Sniper Rifle, became the death machine it's known as in the Fallout community. Fallout 2's Bozar fires 15 rounds per burst with each bullet having a damage range of 25-35. This is augmented by the fact that the .233 FMJ ammo type has modifiers that grant a -20% to an enemy's Damage Resistance and a -20% to an enemy's Armor Class: making it so that in layman's terms the gun has built-in armor reduction and an accuracy bonus. This damage would typically be increased further by taking the Bonus Range Damage perk twice. The perk adds +2 damage to the upper RNG a weapon can do. So for example, the Bozar's damage range of a single bullet is 25-35, but with one rank of Bonus Ranged Damage it becomes 25-37 and with two ranks, 25-39. This doesn't sound like much on paper, but for burst-fire weapons this interaction would usually end up doubling or tripling their damage per burst. Finally, Fallout 2's Bozar is also one of the easiest Big Guns to actually acquire in your standard playthrough of the game -- being available as early as either the NCR, where it can be purchased for a fairly modest price of $5250 from the merchant Buster or stolen from his guards, or from the player's return trip to the Toxic Caves near Klamath where it can be grabbed from the lower level. As well as the fact that .233 FMJ is commonly sold in bulk quantities throughout the game, making it one of the most common ammo types besides 10mm JHP and notably compared to NV's Bozar which has an 8 Strength requirement, the Strength requirement of the Bozar in Fallout 2 is only 6. New Vegas's director Josh Sawyer has spoken about NV's Bozar before. He has stated that he tried to make NV's incarnation similar to Fo2's incarnation, but as evidenced by this video's existence, it wasn't quite up to snuff. The two weapons are indeed very similar and NV managed to retain a lot of the weapon's unique aspects, but I think the major flaw is quite simply a lack of damage. 19 base damage is just pitiful for an endgame tier weapon and is 6 points less than the lower limit of the Fo2 Bozar's RNG damage range. The weapon had no right to be weaker than several of the other 5.56mm weapons: the Light Machine Gun, the 5.56 Pistols and the Marksman Carbines and I'm not exactly sure what Sawyer was going for with such a low base damage. He would be aware that the weapon would not be able to interact with the Grunt perk from Honest Hearts, so unless he thought that the Damage Per Second from the rate of fire would be able to compensate for the lack of Damage Per Shot -- as is the design intent with many of the weapons in New Vegas -- I see no reason why it would be so low. Even the ability to chamber Armor Piercing and Match rounds to slightly boost its effective damage and accuracy does little to compensate for the fact that it's just too weak at base in combination with its incredibly demanding skill and strength requirements and that fact that it is one of the most expensive weapons in the game. It's unfortunate that the Bozar in NV lacks a real niche (Let's be honest, almost every weapon is good in VATS because of the slowdown, auto-aim, crit rate increase and player damage resistance bonus) despite otherwise being a very unique design (Scoped Automatic Rifle) and having one the of the best and most versatile ammo types in the game. One of my favorite ways to play through Fallout 2 is with a Fast Shot Burst Build and turn large portions of California and Nevada into chunky salsa, so I think it's a shame that New Vegas's Bozar just does not live up to the legacy of Fallout 2's Bozar.
You also didn't mention that NV uses higher numbers in general than 2. The NV Bozar having a lower damage output is bad enough, but even having it be HIGHER would still make it less effective due to NV having higher HP values.

Fun Fact: during the development of Fallout 2 when the Bozar was going to be introduced it was originally going to be powerful sniper rifle but due to a bug that crept into the source code it instead became a heavy automatic weapon instead. With only a burst function no single or precision shooting in it. Obsidian resolved that issue when they brought back the Bozar. Sadly it was for the worse.
I find it funny that, due to there being a static LMG in the quarry junction, it's possible to get few Stealth Boys and yoink it for a much cheaper, albeit much more pants-shitting regarding obtainment, weapon than the Bozar. Sure, the extended mag mod won't be available for quite some time and it's going to be inaccurate asf outside of mid-range, but it's still quite a monster to have so early.
I find that a Super Mutant Master will usually spawn the Jack Rabbit Springs near Primm with a Light Machine Gun, bit of an easier undertaking to kill him than sneak past a bunch of Deathclaws.
@@MagpieDynamics Spawns in NV generally are not tied to level. It is still RNG dependent though, because sometimes they will have a super sledge or something like that instead.
I've done this! As a sort of challenge run, I decided that I'd pick two weapons, and two weapons only, and run the entire game with just them. I ended up choosing LMG and hunting shotgun. LMG from quarry junction at level... 2? was harrowing. I ended up eventually getting it through a lot of saves and luck and perseverance (and a stealth boy or two). Saving grace was me somehow finding a spot to fast travel from, right near the mother. Hunting shotgun came from the nuclear test site, I did a double dosey-do save-load through the door to set the pursuers back and hauled outta there with ghouls in pursuit. Rest of that run was fun, I got a lot of mileage out of all the ammo types
On the topic of New Vegas I want to mention how bonkers hollowpoint rounds are on high single shot damage weapons. With something like Medicine stick or even a regular brush gun with the cowboy perk, the damage increase from hollow point rounds not only increases more than the dt of whatever you could feasibly be shooting, other than bosses, but it will also net you more dmg than using ap rounds even on high dt enemies.
That’s due to the DT and it’s innate effects. Enemies in terms of DT range from about 2 (rare instances) to 8 to 15 to some in the near 20s late game. Which is often in terms of automatics about equal to half or over half of their damage output and hollow points increase the DT effect of said enemies overall actually making them way more tankier for little effect. It’s why often in the community folks state to just avoid DPS as it’s an unreliable stat to gauge effectiveness. High damage single shot weapons with hollow point already can easily bypass the DT threshold of most enemies and armors. So the penalty for hollow points are largely negated overall. Honestly DT in general really fucks up much of the weapon balance even with the game getting an entire overhaul regarding dt shred for specific ammo types like energy ammo and 5mm
@@Scuzz1204 I am actually aware of the fact that most common enemies do not go over a dt of 15. However bosses can go beyond such number, Joshua Graham has a dt of 50. Tbh I don't think DT messes up the weapon balance that much, we are talking about end game weapons here (Also at least the minigun can do something in NV unlike in Fallout 4). Though it brings up the issue of hollow points being pretty redundant for full auto guns and ap rounds being useless and outclassed for high damage single shot guns.
You should try its a very fun series, 3 and nv its a bit outdated but stillhave their qualities and 4 even not having the best story had the best gameplay
The thing about spread on endgame weapons is that you have unlimited Steady for very cheap once you've played Dead Money and Steady actually removes all spread completely. However, said supply of Steady makes the Automatic Rifle a contender for best Guns weapon (the .45 SMG is better against low DT, notable for Cazadores, Lakelurks, Tunnelers and Ghouls) with more DPS than the miniguns (equivalent to more than 3 anti-materiel shots per second), excellent performance vs armour and a higher crit chance than other automatics...
I used geck to edit Bozars in my game. They now use .50cal, ammo capacity of 15, damage slightly less than AM rifle (110 vs 150). Basically, a full-auto AM rifle.
The funny thing about the bozar to me is, whenever I used it in fallout 2 it was early game. You could pick pocket them off the guards at NCR. Realistically, it was a mid game weapon in fallout 2. So your suggestion coincidentally makes it line up with how it was best used in fallout 2. Also, I don't get why they describe it as a sniper weapon in New Vegas. In fallout 2 with how inaccurate it was it was best used as a shotgun that fire rifle rounds lol.
The whole reason why it's described as sniper weapon in New Vegas is a nod to a bug turned feature in Fallout 2. Bozar was supposed to be basically be high capacity sniper rifle, but it ended up having the ability to burst by accident. When it was noticed, it wasn't patched away since the devs found the idea of burst-fire sniper rifle funny.
The Bozar in Fallout 2 is actually a pretty common endgame gun. The only guns that outdamage it are the miniguns, and that's only against unarmored targets since the Bozar deals far more damage per bullet.
Everytime I see someone massacre goodspring just so they can do more powder gangers mission, I always gotta leave this comment here. You can still do Powder Gangers quest by siding w Goodsprings, if you dont kill any of the powder gangers in the fight, you wont be vilified. Also you can just head straight to the NCR correctional facility and do their mission, then come back and side w Goodsprings.
Nice video, I'm just surprised you didn't compare the Bozar to the All American. It fills the roll of Vats/Crit build quite well if you want to aim for that. It also has a better accuracy compared to the Bozar. Not quite sniper rifle or anti-material rifle, but close. (0.02 for Sniper, 0.015 Anti and 0.035 for American) The way to get it might be tedious in comparison with the bozar for some people. But in the long run, I've had multiple runs where all I needed to do was grab it and I was sitting pretty. If you focus on it at the beginning of the game it also allows you to also spread more SPECIAL points out on your character.
The bozar feels like an elboninan gun. A sniper LMG sounds like a good idea on paper, but in order to make it work you just end up with a gun that isn't good at being ether an LMG or a sniper.
A good tactic for maxing your early game is even if youre not going to use repair and science. Its work taking them to repair the 9mm smg and Make the chems using the chemistry kit in doc Mitchell's. When you get to the outskirts of goodsprings, you can reassign your tag skills before confirming your character for good. So you can move them to skills you would want to use in the long run.
PLEASE more New Vegas And as a free idea, the Police Pistol in Dead Money has a lot going against it but I like maining it and crit-chasing to max the effectiveness of it's one upside
The police pistol with a crit build is a monster, the automatic rifle following close behind, they carry you through dead money and when your out then can carry you through the rest of the game without skipping a beat. just a shame that the big reason you do dead money is the holo rifle.
Yeah. Even though the Police Pistol doesn’t do a lot of damage in Dead Money compared to other weapons, it’s still probably the weapon I used the most in the DLC (except maybe Knife Spears to permanently kill Ghost People).
Hand loader perk to upgrade your 5.56 ammo into Match ammo. 15% more damage and 35% less spread with no downside. Also I'm a little surprised you didn't bring up how it compares to the All American.
The Bozar is so weird because the Marksman Carbine exists. And even then, the AMR exists. It joes baffles me one of the most expensive items in the game is just a slightly worse version of a somewhat common weapon.
Neither of the weapons you talked about fill the role of the Bozar. The marksman carbine is a semi-auto marksman rifle. Sure, you can fire fast, but it's still semi-auto. And the AMR is a slow and powerful sniper rifle. It's like saying the unique .45 pistol is outmatched by the ranger sequoia and the 12.7mm SMG...
I use a mod called Bozar Rework that makes it a far better gun. Changes it to use .308 as well as improves the accuracy, basically making it a better version of the Automatic Rifle. Really makes a huge difference, and now it actually feels like it lives up to it's reputation set by Fallout 2.
The item description from the wiki may be taken from Fallout 2. Originally was in that game and IIRC, the reason why it’s a machine gun in NV is cause in 2 it used machine gun animations, not sniper rifle animations.
you know i never realized the bozar wasnt good considering by the time i get it i have a boatload of perks, skills, armor, and medcine that i can just ignore the downside and brute force combat
I totally understand why the Bozar "speedrun" goes the long way. The thing is expensive, so you'll need lots of caps. And the skill requirements are high, so leveling up is good. So gambling at the Wrangler or even the Vicky & Vance makes it easy to have the caps.
FALLOUT NEW VEGAS? IN MY FISH VIDEO? It’s more likely than you think Please do more Fallout NV bad weapon academy videos omg this is amazing it’s not something I knew I wanted
OK I know it's a bit late for a protip for a game that is 14 years old but: death claws, shoot he legs, cazadors, vats the wings. Both of these enemies are pretty trivial even with weak weapons doing this.
The Bozar in 2 was an incredible anti-armour weapon, being able to kill the game's stupid OP Power-Armoured Super Mutant final boss Frank Horrigan in just one turn with the right perks. It was also the most accurate automatic weapon (or, rather, burst-fire weapon since this is FO2) in the game, and fairly inexpensive compared to other high-tier guns. Its only downsides were its low ammo capacity and needing high upkeep to prevent jamming.
Honestly, as someone who replaced New Vegas a few months ago: Why bother, just get the Ratslayer. That fucking thing carried me for nearly the entire game.
In practice because of the convenience of AP and HP ammo, the Bozar is basically just a sidegrade to the LMG, and the LMG is a perfectly adequate endgame weapon. Deathclaws are going to be a bit of a challenge with most weapons, even some other endgame ones, and the Bozar excels at things like Cazadors which some other endgame weapons are not great against. It’s a solid LMG but it’s way too heavy and way too expensive and has way too much in stat and skill requirements. That said, I would argue that Esther is still the worst of the GRA weapons. Ludicrously expensive and the Fat Man generally is such an impractical weapon that it’s more for memes than anything else - at least the Bozar gets the job done even if there were better options.
A nice rabalance of the Bozar would be to forego the insane fire rate as that is fairly unnecessary and not really what I think anyone would expect from that gun compared to the LMG, and instead give it a damage point higher, making it a higher damage more efficient variant. LMG high dps bullet eater Bozar higher damage more accurate but without the sheer DPS and capacity
Word of advice to everyone, if you ever see the WA2000 or anything similar in any video game ever, expect it to be completely terrible and avoid it at all costs. You have been warned.
I can hardly wait for the final few weapons that need reviewing for TF2. Like the hot hand, sharpen volcano fragment, fan o'war, etc. We're so close to covering the bad weapon basis in terms of TF2 as a whole & I look forward to that final send off this year, as we begin to move on to other games with bad weapons to review.
This is a pretty damn good video! Honestly, I've never used Bozar at all, so this was all new to me. By the way, there's an independent Fallout wiki that you might get better use out of! 👀
Sad they removed the -8DT from the .223 ammo. It was the poor man's 5.56 AP considering how rare AP rounds are. Unfortunately the Bozar needs these AP rounds on masse to be effective.
The fact you aren't taking out the wings on the Cazadors annoys me because you could be giving yourself alot more room when fighting them by making them slower and easier to hit
13:40 AMR only needs one hit, same for This Machine, Medicine Stick, and Survivalist's Rifle. Hunting Shotgun with a full choke, chambering standard buckshot, with Shotgun Surgeon is even better against cazadores up close than this thing. Esther is ideal for long range cazador popping.
I really hope you do a Bad Weapon Academy on some Borderlands weapons in the future, since one of that game's main taglines is literally have a bazillion guns so I feel like there's a ton of material to work off of in those games.
Bozar is the everything you need to know about full automatic weapons in FNV It is either a Heavy Machine gun or nothing (5mm Carbines does not count tho lol) Also 5.56 is a least optimal ammo type to use outside the Ratslayer meta Even .22 plinking can do the same as 5.56 can, and AP one is way too expensive to use on automatic types
4:45 You don't need Corn-on-the-Cobb to do Powder Ganger missions, you can do their quests and save his goofy ass for later. As for the whole early-game/end-game thing, tell that to the Laser Rifle on a Crit build. Everything is DUST.
I should have guessed, last Bad Weapon video when you mentioned FNV that *this* was the gun you were going to talk about... I really cannot fathom what the intended purpose of the Bozar even is - it's just a bizarre weapon that I feel they didn't actually have time enough to test.
It's a mid-range automatic rifle. The purpose is to shoot at targets at mid-range and fill them with bullets, instead of one-shoting them with a slower and more powerful sniper.
Reminds me of that scene in the 2007 Clone Wars series where that one droid sniper's lining up his shot all perfect on a trooper, only to miss every single one bc the CIS thought an MG42 sniper rifle was a good idea.
the LMG is one of our personal favs in FNV. just fun and spray and pray with a relatively powerful and fast fire rate weapon especially with the mentioned box mag, can hold the trigger for a long while until everythings gone
the Bozar's fatal flaw is its STR requirement. it actually is a solid gun given you have the stats to provide for it, but its incredibly hefty for a longer range VATS build to invest that many points into STR. most will have 4 (and, plausibly start with 3) with Weapon Handling to break the 6 STR threshold on most mid-weight VATS weapons.
The Bozar is absolutely incredible in Fallout 2 and fully deserved the title of the "ultimate refinement of the sniper's art". You had to reload the thing constantly just like the FNV version, but this wasn't an issue because it did so much damage per burst (often killing 2-3 enemies at once) that often every enemy in range would be dead before they even had a chance to react. It was easy to steal this weapon off some merchant guards a few hours into the game and ammo for it was cheap and plentiful from merchants. On top of all of that, the Bozar has surprisingly good accuracy at medium to long range if you invest in the Big Guns skill and for whatever reason the .223 ammo it uses has a huge amount of built-in armor penetration tacked on to its already high damage, which meant it never dropped off in effectiveness at any point in the game even against the Power Armor wearing Enclave soldiers you can fight in the endgame areas. The FNV Bozar by contrast lacks both practical utility and overwhelming power thus unfortunately not doing the original gun justice.
Fun fact: Supposedly, the Bozar in Fallout 2 was meant to be semi-auto. However, it was bugged and this made it WAY better than was intended, making what was a semi-auto sniper into a scoped LMG.
You know, with this weapon being from Fallout 2, it working best in VATS makes a ton of sense.

Or just use the pip boy Za Warudo trick and get it.
@@ToastedEgg89
Will a master spawn that early, though?
The Bozar wants to be a cross between a sniper rifle and a light machine gun, but it's just an expensive, early game FAMAS.
What the fuck are you talking about with the FAMAS? It would be a FN FAL

He became addicted to shitty wepons
This was my favorite weapon in Fallout 2, but I never used it in NV.
Yeah, the Bozar in Fallout 2 was probably the single strongest gun in the game.
This video, the way he told the story about how to get the gun reminded me of Mitten Squad's videos, rest in peace.
To be fair any wepon in the entire game can be considred bad because the anti material riffle exists, and makes everything else irrelevant.
I used geck to edit Bozars in my game. They now use .50cal, ammo capacity of 15, damage slightly less than AM rifle (110 vs 150). Basically, a full-auto AM rifle.
Need to work on accuracy though. I want it to be a well-balanced absolute death machine, not a cheat gun.
I guess that shows how often I used Big Guns in Fallout 2 lol.
The Bozar is one of the strongest guns in Fallout 2 dude. Its FNV version doesn't even come close to how it was used in FO2

In fallout 2, having 2 Bozars in your items slots, you could fuck up everybody with max agility, the right perks and a nice jet addiction.
I always wondered how one trained luck. Always made me ponder my character's thought process behind it.
The fact they sell this at the exact same store as Sleepytyme is wild, fckn bozo-zar
An LMG Sniper... I love obscure guns.
PLEASE more New Vegas
And as a free idea, the Police Pistol in Dead Money has a lot going against it but I like maining it and crit-chasing to max the effectiveness of it's one upside
The police pistol with a crit build is a monster, the automatic rifle following close behind, they carry you through dead money and when your out then can carry you through the rest of the game without skipping a beat.
just a shame that the big reason you do dead money is the holo rifle.
@@pyromasteralex personally I never liked the holorifle. Weird projectile, doesn't fire bullets.
Yeah. Even though the Police Pistol doesn’t do a lot of damage in Dead Money compared to other weapons, it’s still probably the weapon I used the most in the DLC (except maybe Knife Spears to permanently kill Ghost People).
Heh, makes sense that Dead Money has lots of crit-based weapons.

OK I know it's a bit late for a protip for a game that is 14 years old but: death claws, shoot he legs, cazadors, vats the wings. Both of these enemies are pretty trivial even with weak weapons doing this.
...assuming you aren't trapped in a box with them.
The Bozar is the ultimate result of a California Politician's understanding of Firearms.
Honestly, as someone who replaced New Vegas a few months ago: Why bother, just get the Ratslayer. That fucking thing carried me for nearly the entire game.
my initial reaction for this video showed up was “wait the bozar is a bad weapon?”
idk maybe i just play on too low of a difficulty lol
Either too low to notice the problems, or too low because you're a God for being able to do well with it.
I really didn't expect this, but please make more new vegas weapon videos!
Literally just started a new NV playthrough. I appreciate the video
Wait, this isn't Team Fortress...
But the Bozar always struck me ad odd. Full auto but small mag. Scope, but not enough damage per shot for sniping.
A nice rabalance of the Bozar would be to forego the insane fire rate as that is fairly unnecessary and not really what I think anyone would expect from that gun compared to the LMG,
and instead give it a damage point higher, making it a higher damage more efficient variant.
LMG high dps bullet eater
Bozar higher damage more accurate but without the sheer DPS and capacity

Guys. It's an industrial tool. Not a weapon of mass destruction
It's because you should only use it against robots. Maybe against PA too. It's a situational weapon, not a main weapon
Sad they removed the -8DT from the .223 ammo. It was the poor man's 5.56 AP considering how rare AP rounds are. Unfortunately the Bozar needs these AP rounds on masse to be effective.
The fact you aren't taking out the wings on the Cazadors annoys me because you could be giving yourself alot more room when fighting them by making them slower and easier to hit
haha, I love this premise. "We're going to whip these bad weapons into shape, or die trying!"

My understanding is that the guns/energy skill requirement doesn't actually do much for handling, except affecting scope wobble.
It does, it effects bullet spread and damage
Bozar is the everything you need to know about full automatic weapons in FNV
It is either a Heavy Machine gun or nothing
(5mm Carbines does not count tho lol)
Also 5.56 is a least optimal ammo type to use outside the Ratslayer meta
Even .22 plinking can do the same as 5.56 can, and AP one is way too expensive to use on automatic types
I used this gun ONCE in all of my NV runs and never used it again. I just hate everything about it.

This gun is just a scoped smg that looks like a sniper rifle.
The format translated to other games pretty well! Good work.
damn, i start playing new vegas again and this pops in my recommended. what a blessing
the Bozar's fatal flaw is its STR requirement. it actually is a solid gun given you have the stats to provide for it, but its incredibly hefty for a longer range VATS build to invest that many points into STR. most will have 4 (and, plausibly start with 3) with Weapon Handling to break the 6 STR threshold on most mid-weight VATS weapons.
