I did my Roadking fork tubes by hand wet sanding , 25 years of sand stones they looked rough , 16 to 20 hours of wet sanding they looked new , you are right clear coat will wear down and it takes away the look . I can wet sand over and over if i need .

Use Zip strip first to remove the protectant coat put on by factory before you polish ,,, makes it 10 times faster of a job,,,,,, all ya do is spray it on give it like 3 minutes then simply wipe it off with a cloth rag,,, i speak from experience i am a factory certified Master Mechanic,,with 30 years experience.just a friendly tip to save you some time,,
What brand of paint did you use? Besides cleaning the engine, is it necessary to sand it? I want to paint mine matte black, just don't have any experience.
I want to paint my engien and tranny like this. I have a 96sporty 1200. Did you sand the engien much? After the paint was dry, it look very good. Look like a original nightntrain engien.
Is it better to use a paint gun vs a rattle can? How long could I expect the paint to look good. I don't want to powder coat it but I really don't want to repaint every couple years .
remove parts - paint - put em back - wrinkle paint does NOT run cool and is TERRIBLE to clean easily . That coming from a guy who did not paint my last bike at all - BUT you can SEE my work Tontitown Machine and cycle on youtube. - the WLA video .
