I always appreciate your videos I've got an Eevee 27 I bought used and it looks in good shape. I had an old Cam and I pressed it off. I have a pressing make made out of an old press part of it anyway.. someone threw out, so I got the idea and know how to press the gear off I did not know about putting the scribe marks. I seen there was a key and I figure I couldn't get it wrong if I got it on the keyway on the new cam with the old gear.. my old gear when I take it off of my stock cam. Last winter I took it apart my cam chest and I noticed that the breather gear was missing some teeth the plastic one so I found a used reed gear from s&s on eBay for thirty bucks. That's what I have in there now I read pros and cons of changing the gear but it does make sense I made a couple of those 08 pins and try to judge the size of my stock gear and the Andrews because there was no color coding on my stock year.. no. Is I've heard other people say there are colored dots on the stock gear but mine didn't have one .. I wondered a cam that had the same bottom circle so I could use stock pushrods I have bent the adjustable pushrods and I've also had them come loose. So I wanted to retain the stock push rods I have read the plastic gear can pick up little pieces of metal and then it'll stay out of the motor it will embed in the plastic but my teeth broke so I replaced.
All of what you said I agree with. I'd of bought that reed gear for $30 and used it. S&S makes great stuff! I wonder if the people talking bad about it have ever used it or they are just keyboard mechanics.
@@Rapsgarage well it wasn't the reed gear they were talking bad about it was the plastic gear... now I had one in shovelhead that never had a problem ..my Evo when I took it apart and lo and behold two teeth we're missing.. and that's what I read the plastic teeth will break off ,but on the good side when ,the plastic gear if you have any little metal shavings will stick in the plastic and not go through out the motor , they should go stick in the filter .. I probably would have stuck another plastic gear in there but that price is too good to pass up on the used reed gear .. and there's no timing you just put it in and that's it. There is a little spring at the end.
I replaced both my breather gears with S and S steel gears in my Evo's ,its said the plastic on the shaft embeds with metal particles and wears out your housing ,plus if teeth break off can cause potential havoc ,on Iron Head Sally's Vids on YT, there is a pic of an engine destroyed by a plastic breather gear failing ,IMO plastic doesn't belong in an Engine or a rifle ,ultimately it Breaks !!!!!! same as the plastic in the INA Cam bearing ,replace it with a Torrington, and save yourself extra [financial] grief
@@RobertGreenlee-f8u yes that’s correct assuming that it has the stock gears. If you put it back together and it has a whine, you’ll have to take it apart because the gears are too tight.
Howdyidig your video first one perfectly understandable I have 86 flh with a 93 motor couple days ago I noticed tapping then a little bit later loss of power running on front cylander. Well rear cylander intake pushrod came totally lose but laying in the lifter, do I need to check certain things and can I just readjust it Im not really sure what all could have been damaged from this . Thank you in advance Weitstrow, fla
I’d reinstall the pushrod and give it a try. What you described could bend a valve. You’ll need to do a leakdown test to see. If it spins free, I’d put it back together and try it first.
In a different video I left a comment about the cam cover binding on the new cam and gear and original pinion. I’m wondering now if it’s because of the new cam gear. Wow. Hopefully I can get that old gear back from the machine shop. 😮
Yes! I was going to write you back and recommend you watch this video. Also, it sounds like your machine shop isn't normally working on Harleys. If the motor is apart it's a good idea to check the bushings in the nose cone (cam cover). If these bushings don't meet specs. they will need to be replaced. When you replace them they will need to be sized and also they will need to be Line Bored. The crank shaft has to be removed to do this. I would check these bushing if you have the Nose Cone off. If you need further help, email me your phone number to hdrap_1999@yahoo.com and I can explain over the phone. Thank you for watching and please subscribe.
@Rapsgarage much appreciated. This shop only rebuilds Harleys and specifically old ones. He only did top-end. I left bottom end in bike because it was good. The engine has 70K Original miles. I'll call him when he opens this Tuesday and discuss. May be calling you Mr. Rap. Thank you

I just added a S&S reed breather changed the cam bearing . on my evo I like the Reed breather its not blowing oil out the head like the Steel breather did . Looks Funny when you look at the breather no gear .

Local shop said the heads where fine . no valve guides left . pumping oil on top the piston . went to my stock heads for a few years . I like the Extra power the 2 inch valves have with the EV23 cam plus im 10 over .
Hi. I'm about to tear my 80 cubes Shovelhead apart. I saw you used a stock plastic breather. A lot of people say to throw that out and install a steel breather. Would a plastic breather be good enough for a stock rebuild? Great Videos. Keep it up. Greetings from Germany.
put a steel breather in ,Ive seen an engine destroyed when the plastic breather let go ,plus metal particles embed themselves in the plastic wearing out your breather housing ,the INA cam bearing has a plastic cage which Not if ,but when ,will collapse ,and potentially destroy your engine ,plastic CRAP has no place in your engine
Hey. I watch all your videos. Is there a way I can ask you a question directly? FB, Instagram, email, etc? I think my cam gear was pressed on “slightly off”. I wanted to pick your brain about it.
Where was this video a couple months ago when I did my first cam job. It was with an ev27 also. Awesome video! Thanks a bunch.
