I just used a vitamin C mixture (apple cider shampoo, citric acid, dish soap) on my henna hair and it faded significantly. Prior to the wash, my hair was orange. My hair is now a light orange/gold. I am going to continue this method because it seemed to work! I also used the Trader Joe's deep conditioning treatment afterwards.

How much vitamin C and how much water?
What I did to safely test-lighten my hennaed hair: I gathered a clump of my loose hair (harvested from my hair brush for over a few months) and used a box--dye lightener (a light bleaching-type) to see if it would lift at all, as my virgin hair lifts very easily. My hennaed hair clump did not lift at all; not even a little bit. It just got all the harsh chemical damage without lightening the hair. So I figured, for my hair at least, it was safest just to be patient and let it grow out. I've done that for almost two years now; my next haircut will yield virgin hair again, this time with more greys/whites.
If you want to highlight over hennaed hair, I would suggest you try this method first.

I'm almost done growing out my hennaed hair (I want to add some highlights and I can't when it's coated in henna). A professional colourist's tip to fading unwanted color (natural or not) is to use baby shampoo. Apparently the pH in baby shampoo is a little higher, which gently strips the hair and makes it (very subtly) lighter with longterm use. He suggested leaving the baby shampoo on for 30 mins then washing out. I did that, but I didn't like it, as it also strips moisture from my hair, and my hair doesn't like that.
My husband uses baby shampoo and it fades his hair color in a couple months from dyed black to faded brown.
My hair has some greying going on; I'm noticing more of it on the sides than before. I plan to get some highlights to blend them in better, then experimenting with lighter brown colours, mixing henna/cassia/indigo with a bit of amla/aloe/hibiscus and seeing what the results are.
My scalp misses henna so much! ^_^
I did the vitamin C method and experienced sooooo much hair fall. It was frightening. It seemed like half of my hair's thickness was gone. It's still belly button length now, yet so much thinner. It didn't change my hair color much either. I hope this helps.

I have been using henna for the past 4 years and suddenly developed an allergy to it (facial swelling, burning, rash for 3 days after application).
I am very sad about not being able to use Henna anymore but I am looking at this as a new challenge to grow out and love my natural hair color. My hair has been dyed since I was a kid, so this will be new. Luckily, my natural color is not far from the color that I had been using, so growing it out should not be too rough, but these tips definitely help. Thank you for posting this video.

We're you using 100% henna? Or one of those mixes that have part henna , part indigo, ect...
Check the ingredient list. This sounds like a ppd reaction not something caused by natural henna
I've been dying my hair with hanna for nearly 28 years now, I just want to strip one section at the front that is completely silver Grey now and keep dying the rest red for a while longer.
I don't think the coconut oil would strip it out - I always add coconut oil to my hanna when I'm applying it, it actually seems to make the hanna *not* fade - everyone that knows I use it always asks me how I get it to hold its colour for so long - that's the only thing I do different to them.
Can you tell me how you do it?
I mix a tbsp or 2of coconut oil with my henna so it's a conditioning mask while I dye. It works nicely and my henna doesn't fade much.
Supposedly oil can strip, but I have not seen that at all.
Does the coconut oil remove the henna from grey hair as well? I wanna switch to henna and indigo just to cover the greys but I use coconut oil a lot.
I’ve used light mountain color the gray for years and it covers gray really well, it also conditions the hair, I plan to use a neutral henna once I let my gray hair grow out.

Great a bar of high ph soap (I use Ivory but anything with the pH of 9+), pour boiled water over it and wait, the soap will absorb the water and you'll be left with an easy to apply gelatinous bowl.of soap. I usually apply to hair, cover, add heat for 30min and rinse out w hottest water you can tolerate.
I've destroyed permanent hair dye this way, semi-permanent hair dye and removed henna with repeated applications. The high pH lifts the cuticle of the hair and allows whatever wants to be a rinsed away with hot water to come out. This is the same methodology as professional color removers without the sulfur component.
The only downside to this method for me is the hair is literally squeaky-clean afterwards and deep conditioning/oiling is an absolute must after using this method!
I found this method on the longhaircareforum with pics and examples from others how it worked and how well it worked for them. They didn't lie!

I have been putting henna in my hair for years. Absolutely love it the color is usually so bright and beautiful and I have gotten so many compliments. I have very thick hair and have noticed that my hair feels sticky after washing it and people comment on the "greasy" look. Is there anyway to fix this? I also notice that the greys do not match the rest of my hair. Does henna hair need to be washed more often?

What I have most trouble lifting is Indigo. If I use light bleaching (as I have for henna in the past with great success and no damage), will a new application of henna cover the blue/green left behind from the indigo ?

It may look silly while it is working, but I use the same henna that I put on my hair. Then I take thin strips of plastic wrap and tape that over my eyebrows, because the henna won't work if it dries out. I want my eyebrows to match my hair. My skin is oily, so it doesn't really stain my facial skin.

I dyed my eyebrows with my henna every other time I touched my hair dye up. I had no problems.

Hi I have a question, I want to dye my hair auburn/dark copper. But I used Khadi (Godlbrown, Ashbrown) 2 times last year (in october and november). I've been wondering how much time it takes untill the khadi dye is faded so I can dye it with the copper.
Only reason I dislike the khadi hairdye is cause it makes me itchy sculp.

Lemon juice or a few drops of lemon essential oil and Dawn dish soap helps get it out leave it on your hair for 1 hour or more under a shower cap it lightened my indigo henna dyed hair a lot the first time. Mix a little olive oil with hair conditioner after washing leave some on your hair for about 30 minutes it moisturizes and deep conditions

I am just letting mine grow ,I tried oil strip ,lemon juice ,baking soda ,vitamin C in the past even bleach bath -its all terribly damaging and drying .My hair is high density ,fine diameter Caucasian hair .Letting it grow and having the trims - the best natural way to get rid of it .Lawson molecules are bound permanently to pheomelanin in lighter hair and it's not possible to break it with gentle chemicals ,the harsh option is to melt pigment with bleach or just let it grow.

I also had very naturally dark brown / almost black hair . I had a natural highlight that had a red tone to it that became my first Grey's. Those lighter highlight hairs took the henna - red and gv it an all over warm tone but still dark. I think you'll like it . Plus the compliments!!

I wanted to take a natural approach to colouring my hair since I have 3A curls that doesn't like hair dyes and man do I regret putting henna in my hair a month ago . My curls have flattened out dramatically and my hair is super dry, frizzy and looks more like 2c hair now and this is stressing me out . I did add moisturizing ingredients to my henna mixture like oils and Aloe powder. I guess it doesn't agree for everyone. I'm really trying to get this henna out of my hair , I will try your tips and hope it helps

What kind of oil did you use? Aloe is protein and so is Henna. Sounds like you have protein overload.
It will take the curly out
6 lemon juiced and 6 tbsp of baking soda combine with 6 to 8 oz of water. Soak hair for 30 min to 2 hrs. Beware leaving on for more then that time. Use a deep conditioner. You may have to repeat the process several times.

@@What_A_Lady it can if you leave lemon juice in your hair too long. It’s the same as bleaching. Why you do it in multiple stages and deep condition each time to reduce the damage
Hello I am a natural ginger and tried to use henna to make my hair a brighter strawberry blonde . My hair turnt green and I have tried so many different ways remove it nothing has worked and I am stuck on what to do to get rid of of the green colour that remains. Did you use a product that had Indigo? Henna doesn't usually turn the hair green on its own. You can try honey to try and lighten your hair as a treatment. This may help. hennasooq.com/sweet-honey-enriching-hair-nourisher/
I don't know if another round of henna will fix the green but make sure to read the instructions on your hair dye thoroughly in the future. Some need a pre dye and you definitely need to get the water temperature right when mixing it. As far as I know natural hair dyes only go green when your water wasn't hot enough

I've been using Olaplex at home (about 3 applications so far) and I'm considering dying my grey hair with Henna/Indigo because my hair remains fragile and because I want to switch to a more natural alternative to strengthen my hair. Would that be safe or would there be negative interactions between the Olaplex and the henna/indigo?
I use Olaplex number 3 on my type 4 hair. The first time I used Henna and indigo noticed how strong my hair felt and wondered if I even needed Olaplex. I did use the Olaplex on my next wash day and it was fantastic. No problems in fact the Henna had loosened my curl and the Olaplex seemed to make it more curly again.
So I can only comment on my experience as a non professional but I found no adverse reaction.

One more question: Would you also happen to use the henna to cover grey hair? I've noticed a comment or two of people stating that the henna would fade on their greys after 1-2 washes and that is another concern I have, since using commercial dye after henna in case of failure might be an issue. I'm very close to ordering though.
I have a bunch of henna and some indigo that I'm not using from this brand, that I purchased last year. I did like it, it's very easy for the dye to release and it's finely sifted but my grays began coming in at a rate that I couldn't keep up with after 8 years of covering them up so I stopped the treatments shortly after making my last purchase. Let me know if you want it, I will send it to you for free I just want to free up space in my pantry.

Don’t use henna
I used rusk's elim8 it did a great job at removing several years of henna build up (i used henna block from lush, so no metallic salts) the remaining bits of henna and indigo that didnt come out were naturally bleached out by summer sunshine.

Are you trying to lighten your hair? I believe henna only deposits color so it wouldn’t have any lifting effects

Thank you for this video. I hennaed my hair using henna sooq products for about 2yrs. I recently started the 30 day detox, no oil no butters hair care regimen. I discovered that henna is really damaging to my natural type 4 hair. It was an obstacle to my hair truly receiving moisture. I have discontinued using it. Thank you for making it known that it is extremely difficult to remove. The best thing is to cut it out or let it grow out then cut it. I wish I was more informed before I attempted to do henna. I did it to color grey and didn't want to put chemical dyes in my hair. Please everyone do you thorough research before putting this 'natural' dye in your hair.
I also used henna to cover grays, but for 8 years. Like yours my hair also was very dry despite the moisturizing deep conditioning I did routinely. When I heard about Fo Adunni's account of using henna and the stylists behind Black Girls Curls talking about how damaging it can be to tight curls I stopped using it because they confirmed what I had suspected to be true. Now 10 months post, my hair has never been softer and my elasticity (which I thought was gone due to heat damage) has completely returned. I will not be cutting my hair as they suggest though.
Though it should be noted that I have been doing Olaplex treatments on a monthly basis for over a year now as well as protein treatments. I also incorporated Curl Smiths Bond Curl Rehab Salve as well. I know stylists typically suggest not using protein so much but I alternate between treatments that vary in strength and I use different types of strengthening ingredients not just protein.
@@ChristsChemist thank you for this comment. I have seen Fo's videos. I will research the Olaplex and curlsmith treatments you've used. I have noticed that since I have discontinued henna, my hair more readily accepts water. It used to take me no lie 7 minutes of standing under the warm shower for my hair to thoroughly saturate. Now 2 mins Max. I thought it was because my hair was 'low porosity' but it was the henna blocking the water from really penetrating and wetting my hair. I haven't decided to cut it yet. Giving it a year to see what it does. I'm about 6 months post henna.

What do you think about "Reshma" natural burgundy hair dye? It says to leave it on for 30 minutes but that does not seem long enough for a henna. What do you think?

Hi there! I used traditional henna to dye my hair about 6 months ago. It is a little too orange for my liking and have tried all of the natural treatments to try and make the color more subtle. I then used brown henna to try and dye over (I know that probably doesn’t work as the traditional henna touched my hair first) and it only seemed to last about a week and went back to the orange color. My question is will using the brown over top not work since I used the regular henna first? Is my best bet just to wait it out?
I would suggest using the AVEDA conditioner for rich browns. First, do a test of the product on a swatch of your hair. When you see the results you can see if you want to apply to whole head.
Apply to dry hair, let sit for 30 min - 1 hour and rinse. It leaves a nice color deposit that blends well with my henna. Clove for lighter brown and black malva for chestnut browns.

Put amla over it with lemon juice. Do you want brown or lighter copper?That will give you a maore natural subtle red color and tone the orange down.,If you want actual brown, that is whole differnt recipe. You need henna, indigo amd mostly amla. Make sure you are getting the coreect henna.,There are three common shades. Some very bright and others more low key. But it sounds like you just need amla and lemon juice.
@@katiegrahl8270 i know this is an older comment but if you want it more of a burn orange rather than being so bright, try doing a brown hair gloss every few weeks. It's higher maintenance but adds a very subtle color deposit that will dull the bright orange without dulling your hair, and will last for about a week. Glosses also make your hair feel much softer, and if you don't want to spend a ton of money on a gloss, try mixing semi-permanent hair color with aloe vera gel and applying it over your hair that has henna on it. I really like the Adore Cajun Spice (56) and Cinnamon (58) for this, or you can go over with just the semi-permanent color for a longer lasting result, since it will eventually wash out, though for that i'd reccomend something like Ginger since it'll be a more intense result. That way you get the color you want and all the benefits of the henna
I loved the adore colours as suggested by Katie Grahl, but they are loaded with silicones and when they finally wash out they can leave your hair really dry, so I stopped using them. It seems they have worked for her though.

I’ve been using dark brown henna for a year without a problem. The front around my face has decided to turn a purplish color and don’t know what to do about it. I’d love some solutions. I did a shampoo citric acid wash which lightened it, but I want to figure out how to use henna so this doesn’t happen again. I tried redyeing it again but got the same results.
You should try a second step of indigo for 1-2 hours to achieve a browner tone.

Hello. I used henna on my hair and I didn't realize it was not for low porosity hair as it caused extreme protein overload instantly. I left it on for 2 hrs. How do I reverse this. I'm not concerned with removing the colors as I am African American and it did not color my hair at all. I want to reverse the affects as I heard it permanently affects the bonds within the hair shaft. Please how do I reverse this, or what can I use to get this out. Not concerned with color. Thank you.

Any tips to just lighten one area? I used red henna recently (which I love!) to dye my hair, but the greys are growing in pretty thick. I want to just lighten the line where the dye ends and my natural hair begins, to give it a balyage style look. I want to keep the colour, but soften the transition.
Try a henna gloss on your roots. She makes one with cocoa butter that's in my hair right now. It's so luxurious feeling. Some people also mix their henna paste with regular conditioner. It creates a bit of a barrier that keeps some of the dye from sticking to the hair. It's more gradual color over a few uses, I use it in between full strength colorings when my roots are becoming obvious. I don't like the dye-line either!

@@BE74297 I think it will but you may need to do it twice depending on your hair characteristics. If it doesn't stick the first time and you still see a lot of grey, simply do it again.
I've been dying my hair black with henna and indigo for years but I'm trying to transition off of black indigo and into the more ginger henna-red, but indigo is such a pain to remove!

I mixed about 70% henna and Indigo 30% by accident and let it cook in a bowl on the lowest flame for 1/2 hour to warm it because I made it w/cold water. (So I made it wrong. And I learned my lesson.) I have been using BAQ henna for about 10 years. My hair used to be soft and silky but it is dry and frizzy now. The texture is not what it used to be. 😳
Try using a conditioner after . This will make your hair smooth and silky.
Can I dye over the top? The henna was 100% pure, it’s just that I don’t really like the result and the process, so I won’t do it again

i found that you can't dye over hennaed hair. nothing bad will happen, it's just that the dye won't even reach your hair.... i have black hair, so since henna wasn't adding anything to my hair color i decided to go to the salon and simply dye my hair copper. it only dyed my roots bc they were virgin hair: nowhere where i had henna changed colors!
I've done blue color depositing shampoo to end up with a burgundy tint, I've done Lime Crime Valentine over faded henna for a fun bright red. My natural hair is thin fine light brown to blonde.

Henna can sometimes fade over time as does any type of dye (weather and elements cause this or heat over time) and it also grows out so it’ll eventually come out on its own fully over time. Henna hair dye lasts 4-6 weeks but depends on hair growth.
Lye relaxer takes henna right out for me lol. Not a recommended method though unless you do relax your hair, otherwise prepare for breakage

I bought cassia and have been using it many times before. But this time I think they must have made a product mistake and put henna in to it.. because my hair got orange.. 😬

My hair turned out too orangey. I’m not leaving henna, just need to change the brand of henna. I’m going to use the Chai henna by Mehndi henna. Chai henna color is a light ash brown that’s shiny, and will add a lot of Cassia (pale yellow) to the chai to get a dark blonde for the length of my hair. No more peroxide for me!
Hope that brand works for you and since it has more cassia it might be more golden toned but semi-permanent. Good luck!

use lemon crystal light- it removes it all including if you got a bad skunk smell from the henna
Yes my mother used it it stripped to grey she just used the purple shampoo to clean out the yellow. Yes the crystal light worked.

My only success was time. It took about half a year to lighten up my hair. My ends were almost black but the top of my hair was brown orange and gray(not the look I was going for) I wanted my hair to be a med to dark brown. It takes patience but if you want nice hair when you’re old like me henna is the way to go or go gray.

@@BE74297 When using henna and henna hair dye you cannot go lighter only darker. My understanding is the henna (red) is the one that takes awhile to develop the dye that is why you have to wait for it to develop b4 you apply it. Only guessing here...It could be that the henna (red) was not fully developed when you applied it so you did not get the benefit of more red than the dark. You can try the baking soda and lemon removal method but I think it works better on fresh colored hair. I did it the next day and it did take it down a little less pure black. Coconut oil will fade it too. I use about 1 tsp on my hair while it is damp. It helps my curls and it moisturizes. It does not look greasy on me at all. (They told me it was probably a bad batch or my hair grabbed the indigo for some reason but they never got back to me after saying they would research my batch number. That was the Henna Guys.) If you want to try the baking soda and lemon I will give instructions if you reply. Then in the future only mix with water and a little ACV to help cover your grey hair. You can also add a little pure henna to get it more red.
I did the vitamin c and shampoo method and it burned my scalp, just left the product on my hair 45 min, and spent 2 months with terrible burns to my scalp

@@ionasanaa3844, I googled it and it gave several ways to remove the henna. I did about 3 of them. I did a different one each week. That was my first and last time using henna. I went to Sally's and got some Ion permanent hair color and used it. It worked fine. Before I did that though, I spoke with several beauticians.
What brand or product did you buy? Henna only deposits orange or red color. I suspect it was fake henna. Cassia provides golden tones. Indigo provides a blue green color that when applied after a henna color treatment can make your hair black. Just FYI.

I'd recommend a light oil like our camellia or jojoba oil! Any thick oil will strip the color from your hair
Use color oops + hydrogen peroxide + vodka/everclear + dawn dish soap. Do this 3x and it all comes out. Trust me. 😊 works like a charm

I used henna. I will never use it again. My hair has been 4 colors, have fallen out, just horrible. I thought about cutting my hair but I'm using hot olive oil treatments and bentonite clay to balance the pH of my hair. If you have not used henna and have natural hair then don't. This is my experience. I'm speaking from my experience.

So henna is actually a protein & is going straight to the cortex. I will never put henna in my hair again. Henna fades on the hair shaft over time but never leaves the cortex. This can cause balding... I'm sorry I had to mention this but henna shouldn't be put on the hair. It has more cons than pros & oh.... don't put box dye over henna ... you'll make it worse with the ppd ingredient (cancer causing) & the mettalic salts. With all due respect she is not a licensed cosmetologist....😢
