  • Hello friends! Hope you are well today! I received another Christmas gift so I decided to prepare it for use in the shop today. Watch me in real time disassemble and prepare a hand plane in a quick and easy way yet still produce great results. I got lucky with it being in such good shape but I was also not concerned because it will not be used as much my others. Let me know if you have any questions about preparing your hand planes. I hope you all have a very merry Christmas and a happy new year! God bless!

Lovely plane. Looks like you didn't need to square the blade or frog, or further flatten the sole. For a Wood River plane, you got a superior example.

Agreed! I got lucky because I normally need to do everything. But it being a small plane, it will rarely be used. My youngest will probably use it more than anyone. Thanks for watching.

    Hi, a few quick questions.
How can you sharpen a plane blade by hand to exactly the right angle every time?
And having sharpened the blade, why do you lay the plane flat on the bench? Doesn’t that damage the blade?

Great questions! The correct angle is already established so after a lot of practice I can maintain that angle, at least for the most part. I then do a micro bevel with 16k grit and a tertiary bevel on the back with the ruler trick. Check out Rob Cosmans UA-cam channel and specifically his videos on 32 seconds to sharp. What I showed in this video is a modified version because I actually dont need this plane to be perfect. Its more of a collectible item to go with the rest of my woodriver hand planes. 4 more and I have them all!
When it comes to laying the sole flat on the bench: you will find everyone has their own opinions on the subject just as with sharpening. My bench is made with wood and the plane is made to shave wood so the only issue with laying the sole flat is doing it to hard and causing the blade to move. I always take my time and when using larger planes and doing detailed work, i will often lay the plane across my tool tray or have a piece of scrap to hold the plane off the blade to prevent any issues.
I hope this answers your questions. If not, please let me know. Thanks for watching!
