A few days ago I did my first clutch on my sister's car a seicento... Mannnn, it took me three days... I could not get it back in, went back to your video, removed the transmission to body mount lifted it up from the ground up on my chest, up on to the flywheel. and bammm!! It fits... What a fight it was! Thanks for showing in detail how to do it... Ps: You must have very strong arms...
Great job ! I'm sure Mr. Williams already knows it but if you guys want to remove your gearbox on a 500, take some extra time to remove (partially) the front bumper. This allows you to clear the lower chassis rail and completly remove the gearbox from the car.
Good job. Yesterday I replaced the clutch in similar conditions in my Kia Soul 1.6mpi (5h fun) and I know how much effort it costs. One of your videos helped me prepare (Kia Soul diesel). I really admire you with your work.
Just wish I still had the strength in my arms to be able to do this. Nowadays, I’ll take the 4 poster and hydraulic gearbox lift. Great job Ninja man!!
Respect man, been watchin your vids and they're/you're awesome. Chapeau! I keep thinking you must have had some bad ones that go wrong, weather, wasted threads, broken studs, nightmare previous mechanics work, but it seems you've got the skills and attitude to get it done no matter what. Good viewing
I have made an adaptor that allows me to use air hammer ball joint splitters with a cordless sds drill. No more swinging a lump hammer, couple of quick brapps and splitting done. Game changer.
as always kevin your a star I used to do those type of jobs on cars I owned and clutches were all the same but such a ball ache now when I worked in a garage we use to race to see how quick we could take a clutch out
Definitely a lot more involved. I have to keep updating a lot of my tools for the new ones. Especially Volvo they have a battery setup more complicated than space x rockets. Takes about an hour to get the battery out.
Good evening Kevin That must of felt like a days holiday for you doing the little 500 , I had the abarth a few years ago, I loved it , as ever stay safe and have a productive and prosperous week
Thankyou 👍👍 I have already done a clutch before, but on a different car.. and now my fiat 500 clutch is slipping. I just bought one, and I'm fitting it tomorrow, My only suggestion is to also replace the driveshaft / gearbox oil seals, and the engine rear main oil seal whilst you are in there.. And, if you do the engine oil seal, make sure the flywheel is clean and in exactly the same place when it goes back on.. or it will wobble and you will feel it..
More than good he's a monster swapping out clutches on a driveway like it's an oil change. If I ever need clutch work, he's the man to call. Kev - do you do motorcycle clutches too or just cars?
interesting they put a pinch bolt setup on the lower arm ball joint.. For using the chisel end to spread the bolt free, Is it steel or aluminum? Sometimes people spread to much and when they try to tighten or pinch the two parts together they end up breaking it.. I seen it happen on auid upper arms connecting to pinch bolt setup to steering knuckle, steel is fine aluminum setup usually takes bit more care and gentle finnessing.. Very nice approach and process, I ended up buying those foam pads very good idea, usually I'd work on my back with large cardboard pieces, they're cheap and offer nice padding for lying down on hard surfaces, they're also infinitely adjustable to size and shape.
Very true with the pinch bolts. Never spread the gap to wide. Otherwise it’ll strip the thread off the pinch bolt. Aluminium version of the arm shouldn’t be split but rather unwind the bolt all the way out. Then shock the ball joint a few times with a hammer seems to do the trick when pulling it down ….
Thank you for this. Just changed my clutch after watching this video. However, should paid someone else to do it. I can only get 3rd and 4th gear nightmare.
Have you ever changed the input shaft bearings on these 500’s? I did the clutch on my nieces car but it makes a noise from the gearbox which sounds like the input shaft bearing. Quite common on fiat manual transmissions I’m told.
25:52 did you take her up on the offer of a drink? Thanks for an excellent video. I have my daughter’s 500 clutch to do and this has been an excellent find!
This Fiat 500 looks same like mine Panda from bottom, I change last month front dampers and differential seals, I release oil from gearbox, but I forgot release from differential directly, luckily I prepare pot what if shit hit the fan :), I see on your videos usualy car have grease differentials. One question clutch replacing is people fault (heavy leg) or city drive mode?
Great job mate! About to undertake this task but would you kindly share some information please. Ordered 2 clutch kits now that when iv sent the vin over the seller has responded with the kit won’t fit. Car I’m repairing is a 2008 fiat 500 1.2 so I’m confused as to why the listing of the kit is exactly what the car is that it comes back as a different part when reg/vin is provided. Struggling to source the LUK kit so any info on a part number for kits you use would be highly appreciated mate? Or info if there’s different variants on kits for the 1.2 2008? Kind regards, Ayd.
hi Kevin. all that just for a small car, come back conventional drive . ie back back axle drive, back in the day i found cortinas and series land rovers easy to do.even trucks from the 60s and 70s were not that bad just a bit more heavy..do people ride their foot on the clutch pedal these days?
Hi Kevin is the Fiat 500 clutch similar to the stilo,,,,I noticed you removed both drive shafts when usually you just move them to one side,, please advise thanks
Hello Kevin. If you can help me out with this issue I would appreciate it greatly. I replaced the clutch in my Fiat 500 and when reassembled I no longer have reverse gear. I removed the shift linkage 13 mm nut instead of removing the ball socket like you did in the video. I wish I watched your video first. Can you advice what I should do? Thanks.

Also any idea what gearbox oil I'd need and square key size to remove oil ? Oh and what ate you spraying on flywheel and bell housing ? Thanks
Hey Mark. I’m sure there’s a twin air in the channel. Subscribe and have a little browse. It’s actually easier as the box is smaller but exactly the same layout and set up as this one. @@WMCS hi kevin thanks for the reply, some how i missed the notification the other day and didn't realise you replied. In the mean time ive stripped the car down and split the gearbox but i just cannot get the gearbox to fit into the wheel arch and rest on the metal support bar which is strange as you say it should be smaller but the area the drive shafts enter hits the support bar and if i twist it then the slave cylinder arm gets caught on the body at top of arch, really annoying.
