Považme třeba užívání časů, zatímco dříve pro vyjádření sousledného děje v minulosti byla potřeba užití perfekta, dnes lze vše vyjádřit pomocí jednoduchého tvaru minulého času. Taková španělština má třeba 9 časů, z toho používá subjuntivy pro vyjádření nejistoty v minulosti, přítomnosti a budoucnosti, přičemž každý subjuntiv používá jiný druh koncovky. A to je jenom začátek. S češtinou lze bez větších problémů rozumět jakémukoliv slovanskému jazyku. Gramatika, co se toho týče, je složitá, zejména pak psaná forma, což lze dokázat minimálně počtem chyb v mém komentáři. Pokud však máte nějaké návrhy na zjednodušení jazyku, sem s nimi, rád se něčemu přiučím. Rada na závěr, zdá-li se vám čeština zbytečně složitá, přečtěte si Jana Amose Komenského Labyrint světa a ráj srdce, vydání z roku 1848, to teprve poznáte, jak je dnešní čeština jednoduchá.
Souhlasím, bohužel je čeština vyučována špatně, člověk který je ve znalosti a učení se češtiny slabší se v ní lehce ztratí a potom už to jde opravdu rychle do... Tímto nechci říct že jsou žáci a rodiče svatí a zavšechno může ten zlý učitel/a ale učení se češtiny stylem napíšeme se pětiminutovku kdy slabší člověk na to potřebuje podstatně víc času není ta správná cesta a děje se to pořád. Já to zažil stejně, např. než jsem si stihnul odůvodnit proč a kde je jaké y/i tak byl konec a ono dostávat pětku za 5 chyb, písemku co písemku, bylo strašně demotivující a v podstatě sem na učení se češtiny rezignoval.
I am polish and yes, czech would be quite easy fot me to learn. It's not however as similiar to polish as slovak. Sometimes sentences sound exactly the same but most of the time we can just catch single words. And I love the fact that other slavic languages don't have articles. I hate them. This whole A, an, the, le, la, un, una, der, die, das is so unnatural for me. We just use "this, that" or "some" or "any".
Whether other languages use articles or not is actually just an academic matter of terminology. What you have been told to call articles, could be just as well regarded a numeral for “one” and a demonstrative pronoun, and you sure do have those in Polish, and I’m quite sure you use them at least in some situations to differentiate definiteness from indefiniteness.
@@marekj1100 Yes, we use words like "this" "that" or "one" but still in english you can say: this apple, or: the apple. The problem is I kind of know the differance but for a long time articles were something super useless for me. Not something natural, just annoying additional mark that you have to put before the word. I don't even mind particles but articles are a big no no.
I'm Czech and when I need to communicate with Polish at Work, we both speak English 🙈 even if my English is horrible! It's still much better way to understand each other 😁

I made a special group in dorm with Polish girls,Serbian guy,Crotian guy, Slovenian Guy an Girl and Slovak Girl and we were having such a great time while we all were speaking our native languages while we were in dorm and we were trying to avoid english ... and at the end of erasmus we found out that we quite manmade new language (not trully cause it was only spoken) but we kind of understand each other everything... There were some things we found out for every language that have to be changed.... for example that me as Czech I have to change all H to G... so others can understand me :D And other ppl were on pills from us... cause we understand each other even tho we sound different and ppl from france and spain didnt get it

For everybody curious about the declinations, here is an example with the word "auto" (it means a car). We use these phrases like "without" something, to help us decide, which declination the word is in. 1. the car - auto 2. without a car - auta 3. to a car - autu 4. I see a car - auto 5. we call it (like, hey, you!): car - auto 6. about a car - autě 7. with a car - autem It must be very confusing. But imagine you have to write tests at school on these in the 2nd or 3rd grade. Plus, we have many Grammatical rules to distinguish between different nouns with the same spelling and pronunciation with the only difference being the I or Y in the word (e.g. mít means "to own", but mýt means "to wash", nabít means "to charge (a battery)" and "to reload (a bullet weapon)", but nabýt means "to get to have something (like nabýt peněz means "to get to have money, become wealthy)"). We write tests only to learn to decide to write i or y in different nouns. And much more. Kids in the US and GB, be grateful for how easy your English classes are.
Thats true, when I rermember the times I've been going to elementary school, that bad marks I've got, holy english. Now my marks in czech are much more better, almost the best I got in my diameter. But it needs to learn.
Yeah. Our language is so complex and it must be difficult to learn it as a foreigner. I personally don’t have any problems with Czech. I was always good at it and I don’t even know how. But even for some people I know, the Czech language is difficult, so I’m wondering how hard it has to be for non-native speakers.
Jeah on the other hand English,.. so much f**** verb tenses,... While in Czech is like Past, present, future,... English have like 20+ tenses, thats confusing for us,...

It was not Cyrilic, but Old Slovanic, Cyrilic though came from Old Church Slavonic. And Latin alphabet replaced Old Slavonic in Czech lands sometimes during 10-12 century (as German influence rose)
I am fascinated by Czech language since I was a kid because it has so many diacritical symbols over letters I never tried to study it, but I know how to read and understand a bit because one of my native languages is Russian
Actually Czech has only few special symbols, have you seen Polish or latin languages with their special symbols? Even Slovak has much more symbols than Czech.
@@Pidalin If you count the ˇ and ´ as just one symbol, it's still comparable to polish, where they have symbol for softening the leter (ł) symbol for nasal sound (Ą) and this (Ń), which is simmilar to czech Ň.
For the thing with Škoda ( car ) it's Škodovka. And also people from Prague speak quite slow, but people from Moravia especially from Ostrava... man I'am from Moravia and sometimes I don't understand what the people from Ostrava are saying.😂. There are only two difficult things about the Chinese language(s): The tones and the writing system. But its grammar is way simpler than in any Indo-European language.
Czech native speaker and I would recommend you to write down the most used sentences in Czech or sentences you use on daily basis. This way you learn declination much faster. Personally, I don't see a point in learning isolated words, because it will take you forever to encounter every 14 versions of particular word. I wouldn't waste time with grammar rules because they are complicated anyway, I suggest focusing on everyday language.
Actualy Cyrillic was newer commonly used in Czech lands, it was mostly in Moravia and usually in monasteries for short period, in later 8th century it was beaten by Latin alphabet, so it's really long, long time ago.
I don´t get how you are killing "Ř", for most people it is almost impossible to spell. Great job ! xDD I find Czech very beautiful and unique and I´m proud of being Czech. Otherwise, really good video :D I live in middle Bohemia and yeah, I can tell we talk really fast, but have u ever been in Silesia? Na Slezsku sice nepoužívají slang ,ale mají tam ten jejich zvláštní přízvuk (krátké zobáky s polským přízvukem :D). Na Moravě se ale mluví spisovně. Nutno dodat že jsme celkem hákliví na slang. xd

I personally think that if you listen to some native speaker you can get overwhelmed by how fast they speak. It doesn't really matter which language it is. But the more you listen to it the easier it becomes to keep up.
7:44 - The last time cyrilic was used was in The Great Moravia in 10th century. About a thousand years ago, not 200. Latin alphabet is in use in czech for longer time than the existence of Bohemian kingdom, Czechoslovak republic and Czech republic.
I studied English for translators in Ostrava, the best teacher I've ever had was an English guy, he was actually my supervisor for both my bachelor and diploma thesis, and he once asked us: you know what was the most difficult thing about learning Czech? and everyone said: ř! ch! And he said: no, it was "slovesný vid": "on vyšel" "ona dopila" atd. X ""on šel", "ona pila".

My German teacher at BUT told us the same story. Although not exactly - she was Czech and she was told this by her German friends. They weren’t able to wrap their minds around it. As far as I know it is a specialty of Slavic languages.

Try to learn language like little kids. Watch the fairy tales for kids. Usually it use the simple words and language and from what you watch you can understand what is talking about. I learned english this way. I watched tales on Cartoon network and similar TVs and my skills were increase like at the kids when learning language from tales. I think its the same in every language. When the kids are small so you don´t read them or play them a books and movies for adults, no, you start with easier things. Problem with learning language is at first allways the vocabulary, the number of words you know. I like your videos a lot. Only when you discrabe letter CH, we dont grunt like in some other languages.
A huge step forward for most people learning Czech is when they learn not to accent other syllables than the first one (lengthening the vocal is not really considered accentuation). Czech has fixated accent on the first, which is quite peculiar and also the reason why it might sound so flat, the intonation is not needed. So, ['vařit], not [va'řit] is the way forward! I would say that the biggest problem of czech language and why it's so difficult to learn properly is that it is a language based on contradictions, it's heavily contextual and uses too much permutations and variations of words. What I mean by that is that some words are very exact in what they mean and when are they supposed to be used but the same words can than be used in context that completely changes the meaning of those words and we understand that but you as a foreigner have to learn these hidden on-context dependent meanings. This also comes from the fact that czech people love to play with words because czech language is build for that. If you look at some plays of Jan Werich, he plays almost with every single word. He pushes words our of their usual boundary and modify them to something we still understand but non-czech would have difficult to get. The context is also very very important but the problem is that context does not comes from order of words but sometimes it does. You can change order of words and still get the same context but other times you get something completely different. Say sentence "Is this Peter's computer? " can be translated "Tenhle pocitac je od Petra? Je tenhle pocitac od Petra? Je tohle Petruv pocitac? Tohle je Petruv pocitac? Je tohle pocitac od Petra?", these sentences mean the same thing but we have five different versions of such simple sentence and we have even local words like "tuto" which basically means "tenhle" but yet again it complicates the language and it's understanding for foreigners but at the same time makes it more rich and more joyful to use. And to the point of variations and permutations. When you look at Tady Gavin channel he is fascinated how exact some verbs and nouns are, but at the same time he is baffled why is there so many different variations and permutations of the same word. For example, your word "jít" have quite many variations dojít (to arrive somewhere, usually not somewhere close by, like to a pub), přijít (to arrive somewhere close, for example to home or office), obejít (to go around something but also to bypass something or someone, like your boss and go directly to his boss), ujít (to be on your way for some time already, you would usually use it as someone has made some progress in his walk or whatever he is doing BUT it also means that you walked faster than someone else and you just walked out of his sight), vyjít (to go out somewhere but in sense like you just walked out of your house for example), than you have negatives of those words usually done by prefixing them with "ne-"... I think you get the point. There so many different variations of these words and you cannot interchange them. Then there are conditionals. You can make quite many combinations like for example "Kdybych byl býval nebyl takový blbec, nepřišel bych teď na buben." It basically means If I was not stupid I would not lost my money, but it's more complicated, the sentence has actually two conditions that are negated and I use word "buben" that means "drum" but is used as a slang word meaning being broke. The bottom line is that czech is difficult for others because not many languages is based on playfulness and exactness that can be quite vague at the same time. It is it's core and primary feature. Everything you described is just it's consequence. Czech is like playing DoTA2 game that is so complicated and ever changing that nobody can really master it but everyone can find their place in it and have fun at the same time.
No doprdele to je ale slohovka :D Stručně řečeno naše řeč je hodně "květnatá". Btw takový malý fun fact. Věděli jste že Češi jsou nejlepší v komunukování pomocí cizích jazyků ? Je to způsobeno tím že naše řeč je hodně "květnatá" takže se rychle přizpůsobujeme (krásne slovo xd) různým nezvyklostem. To znamená že výslovnost co by jiným národnostem dělalo problém ,tak my máme zmáklé raz dva. Ps: Omlouvám se jestli jsem napsal nějako blbost co nedává smysl. Poslesních pár měsícu používám víc angličtinu než češtinu ,takže je možné že napíšu nesmyslnou větu.

This is the second time in a few days I have heard that Czech intonation is flat or dull. That it even might sound like we don't really care about anything :) Well, it's very interesting feedback it it made me wonder where did it came from. I would say, that Czech language actually has a distinctive and dynamic sound, but only if we get really exiceted. Which we actually rarely do :)

A single Czech verb can have up to 177 forms; in order to decline Czech nouns properly at least by their basic inflectional paradigms, you need to master 168 nominal forms. This is why the Czech language is so hard....
For the record, we've been using Czech language like today (with some differences that I would call minor) for like 1 000 years. We actually never used "Cyrillic" but something called "Hlaholice" and that was only for a short period of time (over 1 000 years ago).

Great video. Czech is a very difficult language. Maybe that's why we learn it almost daily for 9 years in elementary school. But if you learn it, you will communicate throughout Central and Eastern Europe and the Balkans. It's like learning a package of languages. Otherwise, Czech is one of the best languages for describing ideas. Declension of words can describe a specific situation exactly. If Czech seems fast in Prague, it is much faster and shorter in Ostrava (Dobrý den = bryden). People in Ostrava do not use long accents and spaces between words. When I moved to Prague, here it sounds like everyone sings, how all using long accents.

Best way to learn the language, more precisely improve your ability to understand spoken language when you already learned some basics (I did this when learning russian)- watch documentaries on youtube in that language: a) much higher 'density' of spoken language compared to lenght than in the movies b) you see visual context in the ducumentary so you figure things out if some vocabulary is missing c) language used is 'standard', no slang, clear pronunciation d) you can choose type of documentary based on the section of vocabulary/language you want to improve: nature, cooking,history,architecture, even crime:) e) in parallel with the language/vocabulary you learn something interesting as well as a byproduct- so you win twice!

ditto that. I watch documentaries or popular science videos almost on daily bases as well as foreign TV news. Expecially on YT it's easy to choose from numerous topics to fit your interest and have a fun. Finally, what I found extremely useful is actually reading books. Again, you will never run short of supplies and you can choose whatever suits you best...

Czech and Slovak are not really the same as Latin American Spanish and Spanish from Spain... You guys speak basically the same language, while Czech and Slovak, no matter what Czech and Slovak people say :D are two very different languages, it‘s just that we are so mixed and so used to listening to each other, that Czechs can understand Slovak and Slovaks can understand Czech. But we usually cannot speak the other language (or sound ridiculous when we try :D ). When a foreigner learns Czech or Slovak, they usually still don't understand much of the other language, based on my experience... Well, anyway... Keep it up! I like your pronunciation, sounds pretty natural, just careful with the accent ;) We are also a mixed Czech/Latino couple so it's fun to watch.
Nope. We conjugate differently have completely different pronunciation and called most things different. We understand each other. But not always. I do. My grandma was from Spain. But lots of Latin Americans can’t understand Spaniards (my dad included) I fortunately know people that speak the 4 languages and have assure me is exactly like that.
Fun with Czech when an Spaniard would say “vosotros habéis comido” a Latin American would say “ustedes almorzaron” for example; or they would say “vais andando a casa?” We would say “se van caminando a la casa” I see a lot of similarities when reading Czech and Slovak compared to Spanish from Spain and Spanish from Latin America. Is such that when I did my bachelors degree in Spain I had to always remind the teachers I was not from Spain cause when they were correcting my papers they couldn’t understand a big part of the written text... The difference is that Czech and Slovak are tiny languages not spoken by almost anybody. While Spanish is broadly spoken by millions and millions and we export tv and movies both ways. So we have normalized the differences. We don’t want to separate the languages cause we understand the worst that can happen to a language is being spoken by too few people
@@ArepasforDinner It's true that my Colombian husband said that sometimes he also had trouble understanding Spanish in Spain and once I as a non-native had to explain to him what is happening in an Argentinian telenovela because I as a Czech could understand better than him haha (that happened only once though, otherwise I am always the one to ask), but essentially it is the same language (I know, that in LA you don't say vosotros etc but that's a difference that can be overcome :) ). But knowing Spanish (which for me is a foreign language), I can for example read a book written by a Colombian or a Spanish and they are written in the same language, so I don't need to learn two separate languages in order to understand them. While with Czech and Slovak, even as a Czech and a linguist and a person who can understand Slovak people speaking most of the time (unless they speak two fast and some of them speak even faster than Czechs I think :D ), it's incredibly challenging for me to read in the language because basically no word is the same in Slovak and in Czech. I once had to read a Slovak version of a book for a school assignment because the Czech version wasn't available and oh my, that was really crazy. No wonder the younger generation is losing the ability to understand the other nation's language, since we aren't one country anymore... But you are totally right that the main difference is that Czech and Slovak are so little spoken in the world that no one really cares :D
It's just that I was (as most Czechs do) always taking the two as practically the same language, until I started considering it from the perspective of a foreigner and realized it's actually more different than I thought :D Last year I visited a conference in Slovakia, where the two main language spoken were Slovak and Chinese, there was a Chinese girl interpreting from Chinese into Slovak and from Slovak into Chinese. She had very good Slovak, could fluently interpret between those two languages. Then I said something in Czech and she was completely lost, what she was translating into Chinese didn't have much to do with what I said in Czech... And I actually felt more comfortable listening to Chinese (which is my major and I speak the language... or well at least I used to) there than to Slovak, at that moment my brain started to feel really weird :D Sorry for the long writing, it's my Sunday procrastination at its best :D

I live in the US and my mother is from Czechoslovakia, she came in 1939. I have tried to learn the language and never got much of it down but the one phase I did learn was Jezis Marie, so I found it both funny and appreciate that that is one of your favorite phrases. I use it when I need to swear and never have to worry that I offend anyone. Thanks for the lesson!
Hey, I'm Czech and I must say your Czech pronunciation really impressed me, especially the way you say ř, that sounded almost perfect for a non-native Czech speaker. Also just to mention Škoda is not a diminutive, for example škodička could be one but I don't believe anyone really says that. When you make diminutive from a noun you usually add -ička/-ičko/-íček/-íšek etc. (e.g. míč - míček, auto - autíčko, voda - vodička). You are right about the slang too. Each part of the country has its own unique slang words / ways to say and pronounce different words. Generally its called obecná čeština (general Czech) but when you break it up into separate parts you see they are actually quite a bit different. I think you would be amazed if you visited the part of the country where I live because we usually speak here even faster than people in Prague :D
It's nice to see you on UA-cam. We had a little chat on TikTok about your Czech classes and Coronavirus way back lol. Just to help you out - Phonetic is being able to pronounce exactly what you read, as you described with Czech. Czech is a phonetic language in which English isn't, with a few exceptions. French is another good example of a non phonetic language as most "e," "s" and "t" are silent depending where they are in the word and whether the "e" has an accent.

I visited the Czech Republic back in early March, right before the pandemic stuck and fell in love with the country! I visited my buddy (kamo), who lives & works near Kroměříž. I stayed about 10 days in Praha and loved it! So much so, that I enrolled in a TEFL certification course at a school in Praha and I will start whenever the borders are reopened and the school resumes classes again (maybe September hopefully). I cannot wait to get back to and live in Praha!! In the meantime, I have been taking Czech lessons via italki and also by private tutor through the one of the teachers at the school I'll be attending. I love the language, but yes, it is a channel! Thanks to the declinations - there are practically no articles used in Czech. This also the reason why Czechs have huge problems using articles when studying English.
You raise a few good points. 1. I agree with you on the flatness, it's something my Czech partner can't understand. If I am listening to something I don't know when the words are beginning and ending all the time, very often I heard one word and ask her what it is , then she breaks it down. 2. The dialectal differences and the way people from certain regions talk is actually quite extreme. Prague Czech isn't as bad as London Cockney, but since I spent almost all my time in Ostrava, and since most TV comes from Prague, I can barely understand TV Czech. 3. Yes pronunciation is a problem. How bad? Bad! An example (and true story) where I work, the foreigners used to ask (in Czech) for 3+1 rolls. Because they couldn't pronounce the word 4. I've personally been stuck trying to order (and I kid you not) a burger. Because the server could not understand what I meant when I said "burger" or "hamburger" - eventually it's something like booigar, then she got it. And that's another thing, not all the locals have some kind of imagination, they expect the delivery of the words pronounced a certain way, and their minds are literally not capable of computing any variation to that. 4. Would also add, regarding gender and nouns, you cannot just read something and look up every word in the dictionary. .Fine now because we have online translators. When I first arrived Google translate wasn't a thing, only a word for word -> Slovnik.cz, and that expected the correct case. Things improved since then. 5. Even the concept of cases, most foreigners don't even get it, and then most teachers cannot even explain it. To this day I never met a teacher who could explain it. It being a major part of the language, you would think the teachers would have it down. 6. The exceptions, for every rule you get in Czech, except for the spelling which is really very consistent, but for the grammar rules, there's so many exceptions that you can almost not rely on the rules. Also the prepositions don't make much sense. "Do" vs "Na" etc. In English it's pretty simply you go -> To some place. To the mountains, to the restaurant, to the cinema. With Czech you need to learn that stuff mostly parrot fashion. Not even the famous Lida Hola manages to explain the prepositions, but if you show the diagram on Czech step by step to a native speaker, they say "Wow that looks so good", but to a foreigner it's a major hurdle taking months to get over. 7. Not that much shared vocab and false friends. For example you might hear the Czech word ambulance, in English it's a vehicle to transport sick people, in Czech that's a Sanitka, and ambulance is a hospital department. Likewise the word sympathetic doesn't mean the same thing in Czech. And certain things don't translate well conceptually. You can't say for example, the people are warmer. These kinds of things you need to relearn Czech equivalents. 8. Czech pop culture; sayings and references. Well just like any language or in English, people when they communicate aren't robotic, static or boring. They make inside jokes, reference movies, don't finish their sentences, well Czechs are no exception, and without living here, growing up with those memories you can quickly get lost in a real conversation.

It’s hard even for us 😅 On the other hand, you’ve said that we cut 2 and more words in 1 word, but I think Spanish do the same. @@Untilia Složitá? Ani mi nepřijde. Čeština je geniální jazyk. Považme třeba užívání časů, zatímco dříve pro vyjádření sousledného děje v minulosti byla potřeba užití perfekta, dnes lze vše vyjádřit pomocí jednoduchého tvaru minulého času. Taková španělština má třeba 9 časů, z toho používá subjuntivy pro vyjádření nejistoty v minulosti, přítomnosti a budoucnosti, přičemž každý subjuntiv používá jiný druh koncovky. A to je jenom začátek.
S češtinou lze bez větších problémů rozumět jakémukoliv slovanskému jazyku. Gramatika, co se toho týče, je složitá, zejména pak psaná forma, což lze dokázat minimálně počtem chyb v mém komentáři.
Pokud však máte nějaké návrhy na zjednodušení jazyku, sem s nimi, rád se něčemu přiučím.
Rada na závěr, zdá-li se vám čeština zbytečně složitá, přečtěte si Jana Amose Komenského Labyrint světa a ráj srdce, vydání z roku 1848, to teprve poznáte, jak je dnešní čeština jednoduchá.
Souhlasím, bohužel je čeština vyučována špatně, člověk který je ve znalosti a učení se češtiny slabší se v ní lehce ztratí a potom už to jde opravdu rychle do... Tímto nechci říct že jsou žáci a rodiče svatí a zavšechno může ten zlý učitel/a ale učení se češtiny stylem napíšeme se pětiminutovku kdy slabší člověk na to potřebuje podstatně víc času není ta správná cesta a děje se to pořád. Já to zažil stejně, např. než jsem si stihnul odůvodnit proč a kde je jaké y/i tak byl konec a ono dostávat pětku za 5 chyb, písemku co písemku, bylo strašně demotivující a v podstatě sem na učení se češtiny rezignoval.

I am polish and yes, czech would be quite easy fot me to learn. It's not however as similiar to polish as slovak. Sometimes sentences sound exactly the same but most of the time we can just catch single words. And I love the fact that other slavic languages don't have articles. I hate them. This whole A, an, the, le, la, un, una, der, die, das is so unnatural for me. We just use "this, that" or "some" or "any".
Whether other languages use articles or not is actually just an academic matter of terminology.
What you have been told to call articles, could be just as well regarded a numeral for “one” and a demonstrative pronoun, and you sure do have those in Polish, and I’m quite sure you use them at least in some situations to differentiate definiteness from indefiniteness.
@@marekj1100 Yes, we use words like "this" "that" or "one" but still in english you can say: this apple, or: the apple. The problem is I kind of know the differance but for a long time articles were something super useless for me. Not something natural, just annoying additional mark that you have to put before the word. I don't even mind particles but articles are a big no no.
I'm Czech and when I need to communicate with Polish at Work, we both speak English 🙈 even if my English is horrible! It's still much better way to understand each other 😁

I made a special group in dorm with Polish girls,Serbian guy,Crotian guy, Slovenian Guy an Girl and Slovak Girl and we were having such a great time while we all were speaking our native languages while we were in dorm and we were trying to avoid english ... and at the end of erasmus we found out that we quite manmade new language (not trully cause it was only spoken) but we kind of understand each other everything...
There were some things we found out for every language that have to be changed.... for example that me as Czech I have to change all H to G... so others can understand me :D
And other ppl were on pills from us... cause we understand each other even tho we sound different and ppl from france and spain didnt get it

For everybody curious about the declinations, here is an example with the word "auto" (it means a car). We use these phrases like "without" something, to help us decide, which declination the word is in.
1. the car - auto
2. without a car - auta
3. to a car - autu
4. I see a car - auto
5. we call it (like, hey, you!): car - auto
6. about a car - autě
7. with a car - autem
It must be very confusing. But imagine you have to write tests at school on these in the 2nd or 3rd grade. Plus, we have many Grammatical rules to distinguish between different nouns with the same spelling and pronunciation with the only difference being the I or Y in the word (e.g. mít means "to own", but mýt means "to wash", nabít means "to charge (a battery)" and "to reload (a bullet weapon)", but nabýt means "to get to have something (like nabýt peněz means "to get to have money, become wealthy)"). We write tests only to learn to decide to write i or y in different nouns. And much more. Kids in the US and GB, be grateful for how easy your English classes are.
Thats true, when I rermember the times I've been going to elementary school, that bad marks I've got, holy english. Now my marks in czech are much more better, almost the best I got in my diameter. But it needs to learn.
Yeah. Our language is so complex and it must be difficult to learn it as a foreigner. I personally don’t have any problems with Czech. I was always good at it and I don’t even know how. But even for some people I know, the Czech language is difficult, so I’m wondering how hard it has to be for non-native speakers.

It was not Cyrilic, but Old Slovanic, Cyrilic though came from Old Church Slavonic. And Latin alphabet replaced Old Slavonic in Czech lands sometimes during 10-12 century (as German influence rose)

Actually Czech has only few special symbols, have you seen Polish or latin languages with their special symbols? Even Slovak has much more symbols than Czech.
@@Pidalin If you count the ˇ and ´ as just one symbol, it's still comparable to polish, where they have symbol for softening the leter (ł) symbol for nasal sound (Ą) and this (Ń), which is simmilar to czech Ň.

There are only two difficult things about the Chinese language(s): The tones and the writing system. But its grammar is way simpler than in any Indo-European language.

Czech native speaker and I would recommend you to write down the most used sentences in Czech or sentences you use on daily basis. This way you learn declination much faster. Personally, I don't see a point in learning isolated words, because it will take you forever to encounter every 14 versions of particular word. I wouldn't waste time with grammar rules because they are complicated anyway, I suggest focusing on everyday language.
Actualy Cyrillic was newer commonly used in Czech lands, it was mostly in Moravia and usually in monasteries for short period, in later 8th century it was beaten by Latin alphabet, so it's really long, long time ago.

I personally think that if you listen to some native speaker you can get overwhelmed by how fast they speak. It doesn't really matter which language it is. But the more you listen to it the easier it becomes to keep up.
7:44 - The last time cyrilic was used was in The Great Moravia in 10th century. About a thousand years ago, not 200. Latin alphabet is in use in czech for longer time than the existence of Bohemian kingdom, Czechoslovak republic and Czech republic.
I studied English for translators in Ostrava, the best teacher I've ever had was an English guy, he was actually my supervisor for both my bachelor and diploma thesis, and he once asked us: you know what was the most difficult thing about learning Czech? and everyone said: ř! ch! And he said: no, it was "slovesný vid": "on vyšel" "ona dopila" atd. X ""on šel", "ona pila".

My German teacher at BUT told us the same story. Although not exactly - she was Czech and she was told this by her German friends. They weren’t able to wrap their minds around it. As far as I know it is a specialty of Slavic languages.

Try to learn language like little kids. Watch the fairy tales for kids. Usually it use the simple words and language and from what you watch you can understand what is talking about. I learned english this way. I watched tales on Cartoon network and similar TVs and my skills were increase like at the kids when learning language from tales. I think its the same in every language. When the kids are small so you don´t read them or play them a books and movies for adults, no, you start with easier things. Problem with learning language is at first allways the vocabulary, the number of words you know. I like your videos a lot. Only when you discrabe letter CH, we dont grunt like in some other languages.

A huge step forward for most people learning Czech is when they learn not to accent other syllables than the first one (lengthening the vocal is not really considered accentuation). Czech has fixated accent on the first, which is quite peculiar and also the reason why it might sound so flat, the intonation is not needed. So, ['vařit], not [va'řit] is the way forward! I would say that the biggest problem of czech language and why it's so difficult to learn properly is that it is a language based on contradictions, it's heavily contextual and uses too much permutations and variations of words. What I mean by that is that some words are very exact in what they mean and when are they supposed to be used but the same words can than be used in context that completely changes the meaning of those words and we understand that but you as a foreigner have to learn these hidden on-context dependent meanings. This also comes from the fact that czech people love to play with words because czech language is build for that. If you look at some plays of Jan Werich, he plays almost with every single word. He pushes words our of their usual boundary and modify them to something we still understand but non-czech would have difficult to get.
The context is also very very important but the problem is that context does not comes from order of words but sometimes it does. You can change order of words and still get the same context but other times you get something completely different. Say sentence "Is this Peter's computer? " can be translated "Tenhle pocitac je od Petra? Je tenhle pocitac od Petra? Je tohle Petruv pocitac? Tohle je Petruv pocitac? Je tohle pocitac od Petra?", these sentences mean the same thing but we have five different versions of such simple sentence and we have even local words like "tuto" which basically means "tenhle" but yet again it complicates the language and it's understanding for foreigners but at the same time makes it more rich and more joyful to use.
And to the point of variations and permutations. When you look at Tady Gavin channel he is fascinated how exact some verbs and nouns are, but at the same time he is baffled why is there so many different variations and permutations of the same word. For example, your word "jít" have quite many variations dojít (to arrive somewhere, usually not somewhere close by, like to a pub), přijít (to arrive somewhere close, for example to home or office), obejít (to go around something but also to bypass something or someone, like your boss and go directly to his boss), ujít (to be on your way for some time already, you would usually use it as someone has made some progress in his walk or whatever he is doing BUT it also means that you walked faster than someone else and you just walked out of his sight), vyjít (to go out somewhere but in sense like you just walked out of your house for example), than you have negatives of those words usually done by prefixing them with "ne-"... I think you get the point. There so many different variations of these words and you cannot interchange them.
Then there are conditionals. You can make quite many combinations like for example "Kdybych byl býval nebyl takový blbec, nepřišel bych teď na buben." It basically means If I was not stupid I would not lost my money, but it's more complicated, the sentence has actually two conditions that are negated and I use word "buben" that means "drum" but is used as a slang word meaning being broke.
The bottom line is that czech is difficult for others because not many languages is based on playfulness and exactness that can be quite vague at the same time. It is it's core and primary feature. Everything you described is just it's consequence. Czech is like playing DoTA2 game that is so complicated and ever changing that nobody can really master it but everyone can find their place in it and have fun at the same time.

Je to způsobeno tím že naše řeč je hodně "květnatá" takže se rychle přizpůsobujeme (krásne slovo xd) různým nezvyklostem. To znamená že výslovnost co by jiným národnostem dělalo problém ,tak my máme zmáklé raz dva.
Ps: Omlouvám se jestli jsem napsal nějako blbost co nedává smysl. Poslesních pár měsícu používám víc angličtinu než češtinu ,takže je možné že napíšu nesmyslnou větu.

This is the second time in a few days I have heard that Czech intonation is flat or dull. That it even might sound like we don't really care about anything :) Well, it's very interesting feedback it it made me wonder where did it came from. I would say, that Czech language actually has a distinctive and dynamic sound, but only if we get really exiceted. Which we actually rarely do :)

Its so hard that high margin of czechs are unable to speak/write correctly when they need to.
A single Czech verb can have up to 177 forms; in order to decline Czech nouns properly at least by their basic inflectional paradigms, you need to master 168 nominal forms. This is why the Czech language is so hard....
For the record, we've been using Czech language like today (with some differences that I would call minor) for like 1 000 years. We actually never used "Cyrillic" but something called "Hlaholice" and that was only for a short period of time (over 1 000 years ago).
It was replaced by latin alphabet precisely 1148 years ago :)

Great video. Czech is a very difficult language. Maybe that's why we learn it almost daily for 9 years in elementary school. But if you learn it, you will communicate throughout Central and Eastern Europe and the Balkans. It's like learning a package of languages. Otherwise, Czech is one of the best languages for describing ideas. Declension of words can describe a specific situation exactly. If Czech seems fast in Prague, it is much faster and shorter in Ostrava (Dobrý den = bryden).

Best way to learn the language, more precisely improve your ability to understand spoken language when you already learned some basics (I did this when learning russian)- watch documentaries on youtube in that language:
a) much higher 'density' of spoken language compared to lenght than in the movies
b) you see visual context in the ducumentary so you figure things out if some vocabulary is missing
c) language used is 'standard', no slang, clear pronunciation
d) you can choose type of documentary based on the section of vocabulary/language you want to improve: nature, cooking,history,architecture, even crime:)
e) in parallel with the language/vocabulary you learn something interesting as well as a byproduct- so you win twice!
ditto that. I watch documentaries or popular science videos almost on daily bases as well as foreign TV news. Expecially on YT it's easy to choose from numerous topics to fit your interest and have a fun. Finally, what I found extremely useful is actually reading books. Again, you will never run short of supplies and you can choose whatever suits you best...

Czech and Slovak are not really the same as Latin American Spanish and Spanish from Spain... You guys speak basically the same language, while Czech and Slovak, no matter what Czech and Slovak people say :D are two very different languages, it‘s just that we are so mixed and so used to listening to each other, that Czechs can understand Slovak and Slovaks can understand Czech. But we usually cannot speak the other language (or sound ridiculous when we try :D ). When a foreigner learns Czech or Slovak, they usually still don't understand much of the other language, based on my experience... Well, anyway... Keep it up! I like your pronunciation, sounds pretty natural, just careful with the accent ;) We are also a mixed Czech/Latino couple so it's fun to watch.
Nope. We conjugate differently have completely different pronunciation and called most things different. We understand each other. But not always. I do. My grandma was from Spain. But lots of Latin Americans can’t understand Spaniards (my dad included) I fortunately know people that speak the 4 languages and have assure me is exactly like that.
Fun with Czech when an Spaniard would say “vosotros habéis comido” a Latin American would say “ustedes almorzaron” for example; or they would say “vais andando a casa?” We would say “se van caminando a la casa” I see a lot of similarities when reading Czech and Slovak compared to Spanish from Spain and Spanish from Latin America. Is such that when I did my bachelors degree in Spain I had to always remind the teachers I was not from Spain cause when they were correcting my papers they couldn’t understand a big part of the written text... The difference is that Czech and Slovak are tiny languages not spoken by almost anybody. While Spanish is broadly spoken by millions and millions and we export tv and movies both ways. So we have normalized the differences. We don’t want to separate the languages cause we understand the worst that can happen to a language is being spoken by too few people
@@ArepasforDinner It's true that my Colombian husband said that sometimes he also had trouble understanding Spanish in Spain and once I as a non-native had to explain to him what is happening in an Argentinian telenovela because I as a Czech could understand better than him haha (that happened only once though, otherwise I am always the one to ask), but essentially it is the same language (I know, that in LA you don't say vosotros etc but that's a difference that can be overcome :) ). But knowing Spanish (which for me is a foreign language), I can for example read a book written by a Colombian or a Spanish and they are written in the same language, so I don't need to learn two separate languages in order to understand them. While with Czech and Slovak, even as a Czech and a linguist and a person who can understand Slovak people speaking most of the time (unless they speak two fast and some of them speak even faster than Czechs I think :D ), it's incredibly challenging for me to read in the language because basically no word is the same in Slovak and in Czech. I once had to read a Slovak version of a book for a school assignment because the Czech version wasn't available and oh my, that was really crazy. No wonder the younger generation is losing the ability to understand the other nation's language, since we aren't one country anymore... But you are totally right that the main difference is that Czech and Slovak are so little spoken in the world that no one really cares :D
It's just that I was (as most Czechs do) always taking the two as practically the same language, until I started considering it from the perspective of a foreigner and realized it's actually more different than I thought :D Last year I visited a conference in Slovakia, where the two main language spoken were Slovak and Chinese, there was a Chinese girl interpreting from Chinese into Slovak and from Slovak into Chinese. She had very good Slovak, could fluently interpret between those two languages. Then I said something in Czech and she was completely lost, what she was translating into Chinese didn't have much to do with what I said in Czech... And I actually felt more comfortable listening to Chinese (which is my major and I speak the language... or well at least I used to) there than to Slovak, at that moment my brain started to feel really weird :D Sorry for the long writing, it's my Sunday procrastination at its best :D

I live in the US and my mother is from Czechoslovakia, she came in 1939. I have tried to learn the language and never got much of it down but the one phase I did learn was Jezis Marie, so I found it both funny and appreciate that that is one of your favorite phrases. I use it when I need to swear and never have to worry that I offend anyone. Thanks for the lesson!

Hey, I'm Czech and I must say your Czech pronunciation really impressed me, especially the way you say ř, that sounded almost perfect for a non-native Czech speaker. Also just to mention Škoda is not a diminutive, for example škodička could be one but I don't believe anyone really says that. When you make diminutive from a noun you usually add -ička/-ičko/-íček/-íšek etc. (e.g. míč - míček, auto - autíčko, voda - vodička). You are right about the slang too. Each part of the country has its own unique slang words / ways to say and pronounce different words. Generally its called obecná čeština (general Czech) but when you break it up into separate parts you see they are actually quite a bit different. I think you would be amazed if you visited the part of the country where I live because we usually speak here even faster than people in Prague :D

Just to help you out - Phonetic is being able to pronounce exactly what you read, as you described with Czech. Czech is a phonetic language in which English isn't, with a few exceptions. French is another good example of a non phonetic language as most "e," "s" and "t" are silent depending where they are in the word and whether the "e" has an accent.
Čeština je překrásný slovanský jazyk s písmeny, které jen tak nikdo nikde nevidí. Oceňuji lidi, kteří sami od sebe se chtějí naučit jazyk, který není populární ve světě, se kterým se nedomluvíš nikde jinde, než ve státě s daným úředním jazykem. Sám se učím jazyky( islandština, japonština, finština, švédština,...), které zná jen někdo. Kolik jazyků umíš, tolikrát jsi člověkem. Vždy se mi udělá úsměv na tváři, když slyším cizího člověka mluvit tvým rodným jazykem. Přeji hodně úspěchů v učení češtiny. :)

I visited the Czech Republic back in early March, right before the pandemic stuck and fell in love with the country! I visited my buddy (kamo), who lives & works near Kroměříž. I stayed about 10 days in Praha and loved it! So much so, that I enrolled in a TEFL certification course at a school in Praha and I will start whenever the borders are reopened and the school resumes classes again (maybe September hopefully). I cannot wait to get back to and live in Praha!! In the meantime, I have been taking Czech lessons via italki and also by private tutor through the one of the teachers at the school I'll be attending. I love the language, but yes, it is a channel! I think its pretty neat that we speak fast, because we dont know, its normal for us .
Thanks to the declinations - there are practically no articles used in Czech. This also the reason why Czechs have huge problems using articles when studying English.
You raise a few good points.
1. I agree with you on the flatness, it's something my Czech partner can't understand. If I am listening to something I don't know when the words are beginning and ending all the time, very often I heard one word and ask her what it is , then she breaks it down.
2. The dialectal differences and the way people from certain regions talk is actually quite extreme. Prague Czech isn't as bad as London Cockney, but since I spent almost all my time in Ostrava, and since most TV comes from Prague, I can barely understand TV Czech.
3. Yes pronunciation is a problem. How bad? Bad! An example (and true story) where I work, the foreigners used to ask (in Czech) for 3+1 rolls. Because they couldn't pronounce the word 4. I've personally been stuck trying to order (and I kid you not) a burger. Because the server could not understand what I meant when I said "burger" or "hamburger" - eventually it's something like booigar, then she got it. And that's another thing, not all the locals have some kind of imagination, they expect the delivery of the words pronounced a certain way, and their minds are literally not capable of computing any variation to that.
4. Would also add, regarding gender and nouns, you cannot just read something and look up every word in the dictionary. .Fine now because we have online translators. When I first arrived Google translate wasn't a thing, only a word for word -> Slovnik.cz, and that expected the correct case. Things improved since then.
5. Even the concept of cases, most foreigners don't even get it, and then most teachers cannot even explain it. To this day I never met a teacher who could explain it. It being a major part of the language, you would think the teachers would have it down.
6. The exceptions, for every rule you get in Czech, except for the spelling which is really very consistent, but for the grammar rules, there's so many exceptions that you can almost not rely on the rules. Also the prepositions don't make much sense. "Do" vs "Na" etc. In English it's pretty simply you go -> To some place. To the mountains, to the restaurant, to the cinema. With Czech you need to learn that stuff mostly parrot fashion. Not even the famous Lida Hola manages to explain the prepositions, but if you show the diagram on Czech step by step to a native speaker, they say "Wow that looks so good", but to a foreigner it's a major hurdle taking months to get over.
7. Not that much shared vocab and false friends. For example you might hear the Czech word ambulance, in English it's a vehicle to transport sick people, in Czech that's a Sanitka, and ambulance is a hospital department. Likewise the word sympathetic doesn't mean the same thing in Czech. And certain things don't translate well conceptually. You can't say for example, the people are warmer. These kinds of things you need to relearn Czech equivalents.
8. Czech pop culture; sayings and references. Well just like any language or in English, people when they communicate aren't robotic, static or boring. They make inside jokes, reference movies, don't finish their sentences, well Czechs are no exception, and without living here, growing up with those memories you can quickly get lost in a real conversation.

It’s hard even for us 😅 On the other hand, you’ve said that we cut 2 and more words in 1 word, but I think Spanish do the same. Idk, it’s maybe only my opinion, but lately I’ve been trying to study basic spanish and I’ve noticed that 😅 Like está aquí (E.G) I would pronounce it as two words and with 2 “A’s” but it’s pronounced like one word🤔 Maybe it’s just me,idk😅
