    Note in the video I refer to differences with the Instax Mini format. I'm referring specifically to the Instax Mini 9 bodies which are simpler than some of the other Mini bodies.

    Please note when I mention the Instax Mini in the video, I'm referring specifically to the basic Mini 9 model. The more expensive Mini 90 Neo actually shares many of the SQ6 features, although costs about the same and only works with the smaller Mini prints.

    One functional difference between the SQ6 and Mini 90 is that on the Mini 90 you can choose to lighten and darken independently of focus distance (macro, intermediate, distant), whereas with the SQ6 if you choose macro or distance, there’s no way to specify lighten or darken - doing so will take you off your distance selection. Regardless, the SQ6 is wonderful.

    'Over time the price may come down" - and you actually managed to say that with a straight face. No wonder Fuji are making more money from Instax, they're charging an arm and two legs for the film! If they want to charge £1 a print they could at least make the camera £30, similar to the price of printers and OEM inks.

    • @cameralabs
      @cameralabs  6 років тому +6

      I agree if the cartridges remain this price, perhaps the cameras should be cheaper - kinda like the disposable razor business model. But then people are buying the cameras and the cartridges, so clearly Fujifilm knows its customers!

    I work mostly in 'landscape range' (2m-inf). I use ND gels over the lens to darken and over the sensor to lighten, since L/D controls default focus to .5m-2m. I use Roscolux gels ($10 for a swatch book) to adjust exposure & color corrections. Use removable double-sided tape to attach gels. Also, you can control flash exposure by using an off-camera flash w. an optical 'slave'. (I use my old Vivitar 283). Bottom line: "Playing" with the limitations of various equipment has revived my interest in photography during 'lockdown'.

    Wow i NEED to buy this camera. Its so cool how you can change the colour of the picture by puting a colored filter over the flash. I love how it has an icon for double exposure, I have so many ideas for how I would use it for my photos with this camera!

    Hi, very helpful, but I still have a couple of questions:
    1) I don’t quite understand the very differences between “selfie mode” and “ macro mode” since the have the same focal distance.
    2) what’s the focus distance when shooting automatic, or double exposure or lighten and darken mode. They just specify the focus distance when shooting macro, selfie and landscapes. Thank you!

    • @janekholoubek8984
      @janekholoubek8984 5 років тому +4

      That's a great question honestly. Personally I think it all comes down to which brand's film and paper you like better. Fuji has high saturation high contrast prints with a pretty accurate color representation, Polaroid Originals have a lot more faded, cream colored look with a vintage feel. Up to you which you prefer, though I will say I really really wanted to like the polaroid papers so that I could go back to using an SX-70, but I can't help it, every time I see a photo from them I realize Fuji has much better chemistry and product reliability than the current Polaroid Originals. I recommend looking up reviews about how often a photo from Polaroid just ejects black or somehow damaged.

On several occasions I take pictures outside late afternoon/right before sunset but get blown out subjects (that are maybe 3M away). With the Instax Wide 210 film/camera, under the same conditions/locations I get perfectly exposed pictures. Any ideas why????

    What an amazing camera. I would love to test one them out. But 1.25 a shot is still a bit steep. I guess it really puts you in a place where you have to put a lot of thought and skill for just one shot.

      I use mini 70. It is kinda worth in my opinion if you get the shot right. Polaroid is much more expensive and you get fewer shots in a pack 8 vs 10. Also feels to me colors are richer on Instax but I might be wrong here. Sq6 is definitely on my shopping list!

    • @Allhoney33
      @Allhoney33 6 років тому +3

      I've got the Instax Mini 90 and the Instax SQ10 and let me say, nothing beats the reaction people have when the film ejects......kids, teens, adults, senior citizens, all love it! I think they are worth it and I'm already getting a head start on my Christmas shopping because I know what everyone wants. 😳 That's how amazing these instant cameras are. People see the real value of capturing a moment and having it develop right in front of you vs capturing a moment that goes directly to storage on an iPhone, Android and Digital camera which ends up being forgotten and out of sight.
      Also you have several options of affordable Instax Mini cameras. There is the Instax Mini 25, Instax Mini 26, Instax Mini 50s, Instax Mini 70, and of course the Instax Wide. I think my next investment will be the Instax Wide.
      Side note......stay away from Lomography instant cameras......overpriced and very inconsistent results. I have the Lomo Instant Magellan Glass.....worst instant camera ever. I waste more film trying to get the shot more than anything. Even professional photographers run into problem with this brand. If you like vignettes on all your film, a weird sepia color on all your indoor shots, a glass ring on all your outdoor shots due to light leaks into the lens and wasted film because you have to be at the exact distance or else it'll be blurry, then Lomography is your bud. I'll always be an Instax Fujifilm lady though!

    I'll probably end up getting this camera. I really enjoy my Instax mini, and adore my Polaroid camera except one is too small and the other is too expensive. Two things irk me about the SQ6 though. The lack of monochrome film (Come on, Fuji, come on!) and the lack of a bulb mode. Not something I'd get a great deal of use from, but it would be nice to know it was there.

    The question is, how long Fuji will supply the square cartridges ? You think it would be good investment for taking 10 - 15 photos a year for a decade or more ? Would I just go better with a high end phone and a photo printer ?
    I mean I would not want to invest in something what will be out of the market in like 2 years and no more accessories available to buy in like 4 years.

    • @cameralabs
      @cameralabs  5 років тому +2

      Well Fujifilm has just launched the SQ20, another square format camera, so it's actually made more square models than minis recently. I can't speak for them of course, but reckon it has a solid future - the instant sales are very good for the company.

  • @Photoandcargeek
    @Photoandcargeek 6 років тому +1

    At this price Fuji must be living the dream. I should try and find my 30yo Polaroid, it could be worth more than this one as the prints are larger.

    • @cameralabs
      @cameralabs  6 років тому

      Polaroids are also enjoying a comeback, although the film is more expensive.

    • @Photoandcargeek
      @Photoandcargeek 6 років тому

      Gordon Laing I know, i have never been into Polaroids, i find them fun for a few days and then I move on to a "real camera" with which I can take any type of picture, get much higher quality and can print in Polaroid format if I want to ... Eventually on a small battery powered printer. That being said, I know quite a few photographers who exhibited and sold their Polaroids, last one I have heard of was fashion photographer Ku Khanh selling celebrity portraits taken by Polaroid. Not my thing, I preferred done of his other work.
      That aside, Fuji makes ludicrous margins on Instax and are surfing on the hipster wave like very few large companies. Good for them and I hope the money will be used to improve Xtrans cameras and maybe launch a full frame or a medium format with super fast AF in a body no bigger than a full frame SLR.

    • @surrealchemist
      @surrealchemist 6 років тому +1

      The company making Polaroid film now hasn’t done anything to cut their prices down over the years so it costs even mor than instax. So it’s kinda funny a lot of comments complaining about price.

    • @Photoandcargeek
      @Photoandcargeek 6 років тому +1

      Joshua Kleiner well to be honest I couldn't care less, I have never been into Polaroid, not 30 years ago and not now. At the time I was too young to use the large Polaroid formats used in studios and when I started photography I had good light meters and SLRs matrix metering do I didn't need Polaroid test shots.
      That being said, Fuji is clearly selling a simplistic machine for an incredibly high price in comparison to what it probably costs to manufacture. And, even though I have no clue how much the film costs to make and sell, I have no doubt that the margin should be very good too as they surf on the hipster nostalgia wave.

      Thanks for the reply, Gordon. I was thinking it might be possible in Landscape because that is the last lens adjustment before hitting double exposure and lighten/darken. I just received my SQ6 but have not tried it out yet.
      Update: A Flickr user has mentioned even this combination might not be possible because there is a slight movement of the lens when exiting landscape mode. He thinks the only focus range that will work with the double exposure or lighten/darken features is the default middle focus (1.6 ft. - 6.6 ft.)
