Oh, also, Alclad is excellent for 3D printed (SLA/DLP, i.e. methacrylate resin) models as well. You can go nuts with layers (up to 4-5) and even the imperfections (seams, support marks, layer misalignments) out really well. Sticks to it pretty good too, after a 24 hour cure.

huh. I've been using Mr. Finishing Surfacer 1500 Gray and it's always been anything but smooth. Usually have to go over it with a ultrafine grit cloth. I haven't done it myself, but Stnylrez can supposedly be used with lacquers as well. It's supposed to be good for everything once fully cured.

@@hgbarnes1584 Alclad and Mr. Primer are both lacquer based...Stynylrez and Vallejo surface primer aren't. Lacquer-based primers chemically bond to the plastic parts and are much more durable. Stynylrez and VSP just sit on the surface. Masking tape could peel them off.

Thanks Dave. A great video and one on a subject that is often quite contentious. I've come to the conclusion that some primers are impacted by the environment they are used or stored in and by simple factors like how people spray the stuff. Also not all primers in the same range are equal. I use Vallejo primer for most projects and have several of the colours. Black is by far the easiest and most forgiving of how you spray it, while gray requires you to be far more careful in how you apply it as does Gloss Black. Other colours fall somewhere in-between. Honestly there are so many variables with primer!
    Keep up the great videos.

It says on the back of the STYNYLREZ label NOT TO THIN this product. I have used it extensively at the recommended pressure of 20-25psi with no issues! After using Stynylrez for the first time I through away all my other primers.

You know Stynylrez is a pretty good acrylic primer, perhaps one of the best. Before priming always wash the parts while on the sprue in hot soapy water to insure there is no mold release. Being cheap I use acrylic paint and floor polish and it works almost as good as a primer. Never had a problem. For non acrylic paint I just decant spray can (non gloss) grey paint for plastic.

    • @STARSHADOWWOODWORKS

I always wash parts after trimmed and cleaning because you get Sanding dust and body oil on parts but ya that's a great primer unless painting with lacquer.

I have used the Badger primmer and I have to thin it to use it. I thin it 50/50. It works well then. I have heard that some people warm it up and use it...they say it is more fluid that way. It does not make any difference for me. Still pretty thick. I thin just about everything really. Makes clean up very easy. Great videos Dave...thanks for sharing.

Mr. Primer Surfacer is actually a multipurpose primer (for resin, metal, plastic etc) and it can only be thinned with levelling thinner.. if you use normal hobby thinner it will clog in your airbrush. It’s written on the cap. 😁😁

  • @warc8us
    @warc8us Рік тому

I wanted to try Stynylrez but had a terrible experience with it. It was chunky when I got it, and no amount of shaking and stirring got rid of it. i tried straining it, but it was still clogging my airbrush. I was even trying to shoot it out of a Badger 150 with the Heavy tip which is like .78 or something crazy, and was getting a ton of dry tip and clogs. I contacted Badger and initially it looked like they would send a replacement bottle, but after weeks of waiting they never even responded asking for my address. I ended up throwing the bottle away.
It turns out if that primer freezes at all on the way to you, it will turn into mud. So it's best not to order Stynylrez during the winter months, while it can freeze in the trucks on the way to you.
I've wanted a good acrylic primer for a long time. But I've learned to love and stick to Mr. Surfacer primer thinned 50/50 with lacquer thinner. I've never had it fail to adhere to plastic or rubber surfaces.

I like vallejo primer but it cant be sanded witch I find annoying. While One shot primer (Stynylrez) can get sanded and are much more dureble than the latex vallejo stuff. But my favourite primer I think is the new white alcohol based mr aqueous surfacer 1000. Wery smooth perfect for anime model figurines. Revell has a pre dilluted laqcuer based primer called Aqua color primer, the name make it sound like its water based but its not. 1000 is going to give a very nice surface that's smooth and don't have to post sand like using say krylon, the higher will give almost glass surface when dry.
Made to fill any imperfections, swirl or scratches in the piece after Sanding but there is drawback.
With the high 1500 you have to do light coats paint and let dry before another because so smooth paint will bead up and run, but lacquer paint drys fast, acrylic will be where you have too really watch.
      Hope helps.

Thanks. I'm new to miniatures painting and recently finished a bottle of vallejo surface primer that my friend gave to me. Unfortunately, acrylic primers are expensive at my area and i've managed to source Mrsurfacer 1000/1200/1500 spray cans for really cheap. Which would be the best spray can primer to buy for miniatures where im using citadel paint afterwards? Really appreciate your insights.

Lol if your in California everything is toxic including the air lol
There will be odors using enamel but not as bad as laquers

@@davideleo2062 yes, would not hurt to do same with enamel if Airbrushing. But if hand brushing you don't need

I tried Stynylrez primer recent and the paint drips like a MF. The bottle probably sit too long in the store which made the paint particles to precipitate and harden at the bottom.

I would return. They had lot of batches that were frozen in transit and ruined.

Don’t use Vallejo primer on resin. Just... don’t. Learned that the hard way. It’s rubbery even when cured, cannot be sanded, and if you scratch it, it’ll peel off like a glove. That’s on top of the other issues (constant clogging on the needle, crappy texture).

    • @MrSeniorJR

I've never had those issues....bad batch, perhaps?

It needs 24 hours to dry. If you try sanding before that then that’s the result

Really? Games workshop want you to bring a bulldozer to an armor battle? Really? (shakes my head in dismay) What's next having really tall tanks with war banners plastered all over it so the enemy can see it well?
    Good vid though. Informative.

I'm sorry, I know early this year they had a lot that got frozen and messed with makeup as I even got a bottle that did that. I've had better luck with this than that vallejo but either one need to make sure surface roughed up and not just smooth plastic. Ultimately if looking for one on plastic that will never flake just try the Mr surfacer primer... Lacquer works every time.
Thanks for your feed back and yes I feel you about their CS, I got reamed for doing honest review on ab and not singing highest praise... Wasn't even a free ab, I paid for it lol
