  • A down and dirty pair of hammer tongs made from ½" square.
I made my first pair yesterday and made them way too big and heavy so am trying a smaller pair today.

Another great one, Gary. Love the style, and simplicity, including the MIG welding. God bless.

Gary you still swing a hammer better than I do. I’m glad to see the surgery was a success. The shop is amazing. I’m so jealous. You earned it. I’m still banging shoes in my garage.

Man Gary... i am LOVING your new shop ! I have a 1400ft2 shop and it's PACKED with Mills, Lathes, auto hoists and everything else so much that i find my forging space is always too small. Though I am in the middle of a revamp t make room for the new 334# Euroanvil and powerhammer...
Glad to see you swinging again and sorry to hear about the upcoming hand repair.

Nice job Gary. I'm sidelined at the moment with a rotator cuff injury. Can't wait to get back in the game. I wear your "Give it some beans" shirt to physical therapy.

I hope your recovery is swift, I’m 8 months post op and still recovering but I can do most things I need. It’s just a joy not to have the pain!

Nice look Gary - but I did have a quick look at the calendar to make sure it wasn't Oktoberfest... :)

Cameras can see infra-red, invisible to us, so it shows extra light and makes the steel look hotter than it really is.

bad news about the carpal tunnel, I had both of my wrists done earlier this year and it made a huge difference for me. But the surgeon told me he had only seen two cases of reoccurrence in his career, so either you are really unlucky or my surgeon was a little wishful... either way I hope your surgery is a success!

I like how you use a traditional coke forge, instead of a Propane furnace that other (so-called) blacksmiths use, which is insufficient for attaining the heat required to do everything that you need to do, including forge welding, which is much more difficult using a Propane furnace.

Depends on how you use them I use four types of forge coal coke charcoal and gas my favourites are charcoal and gas my gas forge is a single burner made in a 9kg gas cylinder and reaches weld temps easy. Doc from @docs hot shop and forge (on UA-cam) welds in his all the time also.

Gary you might want to try vitamin B6 for your carpal tunnel issues. I have been working as a electrician for 40 plus years, wire cutting and crimping tools were taking a tole and I started having carpal tunnel issues. I take a 100 Mg daily and have avoided the surgeon for 30 years . The information I have read on it says 50 to 200 Mg for recommended dosage. It took about 3-4 weeks before I noticed that I was not having any issues. I did stop taking it and it took 6 weeks before I had issues again.

It’s gone a bit too far for that, it’s almost too far gone for a good outcome from an operation, I need it really soon!

These tongs need to be used to make a rounding hammer if you can get a decent striker.

Nice project Gary. It is so hot and humid here the thought of lightning the forge is appalling.

It’s quite warm here at the moment hence the shorts, but my new shop is well insulated and well ventilated so not too bad in front of the forge.

A bit late to the party, but future tongs drop the rivet down 1.5-2" they will open quicker.
The Brian Brazeal style, the jaws are forged using the golden ratio. I don't know that I've ever seen a good video on them though.
