  • After lots and lots of messing about this are the tong that I made for Crystal. What I believe to be a super versatile pair of tongs that are easy to uses and can hold lots of types of small to medium stock. They are quite easy to make as well.
These tongs can hold 1.6mm up to 16mm stock sizes very well and with the large bow you can get lots of odd shaped objects in the jaws. They are loosely based on a Toby Hinkman and Brian Brazeal tongs.
    hope you enjoy.
Etsy's gone and I have a new online shop and website.

Crystal here - Those tongs seem VERY versatile - how exciting to get these! I'd been using pliers, and a cheap hardware store hammer. Now looking forward to quality improvement from a proper set of kit to add to practice time. Much less "drop" forging. Thank you so much for getting this completed. It will change working conditions and add to the joy in creating.
Plus, it is awesome to have it come from you, Dan. You do a lot for us beginners with this channel. Hammer On!

Hoy, Dan! Got my Hammer and tongs today, WOWWEE!!!! What a difference in rebound on the hammer, and such a looker...Perfect finish. I almost hate to strike a blow, but I am also inspired to get working. The tongs are a perfect fit to my old lady hands. Between the two styles, there is nothing I should not be able to hold. In time for making Christmas items, yes! Thank you! TMIB stickers to a place of honor in my shop.

Love the videos Dan! It’s evident that you took inspiration from Brian Brazeal’s tongs, in the way of the jaws and the concept. Brian literally spends every penny he has helping to teach the craft and art of blacksmithing all over the world. Tossing him a bit of credit can only help him accomplish his goal to spread these ideas and help us all in the process.
He truly is a Renaissance man of blacksmithing and never gets the credit he deserves, imho.

Just a note, I use these every time I forge. I love them. I am going to try and make a set myself, that will fit in the small port of my forge door. Thank you again, Dan! Today I was going to borrow a prybar, when I said - hang on, I'll just make one.
Dang Don't I feel like real steel, it came out great.

I attempted a variant of that out of 5/8 square once upon a time. I drew it out too thin however and the jaws would flex side to side. Good tutorial on a set of tongs that previously had no instructional as far as I've seen. Thanks Dan. Might try em again. Or just buy a set next spring 😉

Do like this design for quick in-situ or special purpose tongs is very handy reminiscent of my first pair, but much betterr. Had to smile when you suggested maybe tidy up the nice edge you "may or may not have created". Note to self: : Create "nice" enuff edges off the hammer without cleaniing up in some form is good practice..

One for the tong fetishists out there - remember you can probably just weld a bar to the material you're forging and occasionally pour some water on the handle. Don't use 'I havent got tongs' as an excuse :)

Just a suggestion,,, instead of scaling back on the channel, continue to increase support, and hire someone to help with the videos. Typically you can find a student or someone interested in filmmaking, let them hold your camera and handle the editing under your direction. Then you can pause to do your monologues, but otherwise go about your work, even increasing the share of time going toward the shop, while also putting out an increase in channel content.
