My mother passed away during Covid, and watching this episode reminded me of her cooking. I especially loved her salmon cakes and her oxtail. I love you, Mommy. 🥰😚
R.I.P. to your dear mama
She's with you we all know are spirit lives because of Jesus the Christ ase.
Yes Lori I know how u feel my uncle is from down south he pass too he was the best cook I know
Sending you love
🙏🏾🙏🏾❤❤
I love soul food!!!! Thanks for go deep inside LA to show us the best.
Awesome
If you like Cheese Whiz Mac this is your place, Oxtails aren't always tender and when you ask for specific pieces of meat. They give what they want. I would never go back here. Also Annie ain't BLACK
I'm watching and thinking, "oh my God.. I should drive down to them today and eat this for New years Eve!" Within seconds you say they moved to Hollywood which is where I live! This is destined!! I just got very excited!!! 😊
*Edit/Update.. they are not yet open at their new location but they are so close to me and I say again... this is destiny!! 😝
I'm there! Happy New Year! ...to Meee!!! 😊🙌🏼
I love Soul Food as well. Hey Steve, you should also explore Ethiopian food as well. I had Ethiopian food in Little Ethiopia, it was very good.
He’s literally right in the heart of The best Ethiopian food in LA right there. 👀💯‼️😁
How did you not eat Ethiopian food while there?
Ethiopian food is trash
@@babyboy5299To each its own
@@babyboy5299 It's an acquired taste. It's healthy, mostly vegetarian. Unless you're a flexible foodie, there are limits on your food adventures. I could go anywhere in the world and I wouldn't starve because I have flexible taste buds, but NO insects!
NOT Black Owned! No thank you!
My brain is confused after seeing the owner
You only eat at black owned?
@@dmotta2811 just like Asians only eat at Asians owned so what is your point that's just it you don't have one 😈⛏️
This guy is definitely being paid to eat here. Nothing he is saying is authentic, and he barely ate any of the food. LOL
👏 I thought I was the only one that recognize that these Asians are something else you know why he's doing it right just to get views that's all tired of these people!
I wish there were more soul food restaurants. I’m so sick of seeing taco places everywhere instead of more variety
Do sum bout it then buddy
The video started off by saying one of "The Hottest Soul Food Restaurant"...However traditional soul food is an American Southern Black cuisine...The owner didn't appear to be either!!! So my question is, where did she get her recipes from⁉🤔😠
The same place Paula Dean got hers from.
The menu didn't really look like soulfood items
@@yuioyup The food the reporter was sampling was most certainly what is considered soul food. If you don't think so, then what do you consider soul food?
Here in Texas I grew up eating Salmon croquettes with rice or smothered potatoes and onions and biscuits. With Louisiana hot sauce 😊

It's about time! Soul food will rock your world.
It sure did
Look I don't doubt that you enjoyed the food as you say. However, I am not impressed by what I'm looking at. The chicken, oxtails and mac n' cheese looks dry. I am African American so I am VERY familiar with soul food. I was born and raised in HELL-A, and there used to be a hand full of really great soul food restaurants here. But those days are gone. Las Vegas has some decent restaurants there. But the west coast is just a desert when it comes to soul food. The mid west and southern states have the best. Also NY City. Sorry, but that's my opinion. But thanks for your enthusiasm. I always ask Asian people where THEY go, then I go there. Same with Mexican people and their food. No shade intended but I have never heard ANY black people mention this place nor any place in Southern Calif FOR YEARS because most of the black population moved away over the last 20 years. To prove my point, the few soul food restaurants in L. A., County are relatively new. What does that tell you?
Her food is the truth. Go try it for yourself
@@geoblaine6227 , maybe I will, new restaurants open all the time, here in ELL-A. The problem here is the population is constantly moving far away or the mass exodus leaving Crappy Pornia for good. There are large numbers of Latinos and Asians here to sustain their cultural foods. The other reason that Mexican food and Asian food restaurants are able to stay open regardless of the clientele, is that they are able to sell "finger foods," and convienient "on the go" type of foods. Soul Food like most Southern American foods is mostly "sit down at a table with a fork" foods. Except of course fried chicken. But most Americans want fried chicken served with the traditional side dishes, and these are not "on the go" foods. The other issue that is a major (if not THE) reason why most people who were not born in America or whose parent's immigrated here, have never REALLY had REAL American traditional home cooking. Because the food takes a LONG time to prepare, and it tastes best fresh out of the oven. No one wants stuffing or candied yams or gravy that has been sitting for hours under a heat lamp nor, do they want it microwaved. A restaurant selling our food needs to periodically put out freshly baked or fried foods throughout the day, and THAT is where the problem is for our foods being sold here. If there are LOTS & LOTS of customers steadily buying the food throughout the day, the restaurant can comfortably get a return on their investment and keep baking a fresh batch of food throughout the day because they know it will not be wasted. If you go to Vegas, or to a large midwest city or the south or NY City, they have a large number of customers constantly buying the food so it replenished with fresh batches and the customers keep coming back and those restaurants STAY open for DECADES and become tourist attractions. I have been to Sylvia's in Harlem, and everything was fresh and delicious!
I was born here and it is heartbreaking to see what has happened to this place. It went from heaven to ELLE in an handbasket ! The same thing that happened to soul food restaurants here, happened to mom and pop Italian restaurants. You can tell that people are tired of the oversaturation of Mexican food and Asian food by the explosion of Nashville Hot Chicken restaurants opening EVERYWHERE ! In Cerritos, there are 5 different Nashville Hot Chicken restaurants that opened up within 3 blocks of each other ALL on the same blvd ! None of them are black owned but many of them deliberately hire black staff members because the Hot Chicken method was invented by black people in Nashville. They also know that there is a yearning for "American" traditional foods.
So, I may give this restaurant a try, although I live on the South Orange County border and don't get up to L.A. much any more. Although I am not enthusiastic, I am open minded. But bot open minded enough to spend the rest of my life in this state. Stick a fork in it, it's DONE ! Good wishes to the owner of this restaurant.
@@kitcatmeeow571 I’m from LA too.
@@geoblaine6227 , kool ! How long have you lived here? Me 50+ years 😏
BEST SOUL FOOD RESTAURANT IN L.A. RATED BY WHO? YOU MUST BE OUT YOUR MIND!!!
The man is giving us his opinion of the soul food places he's been to - why the negative comment?
@@tanyasbag because we know how Asian people really are that man does not care about the culture nor the food he's just doing it to get views now that is the honest-to-god truth
U look happy ASF in the thumbnail. As you should. 🙋🏽♀️ funny tho the owner dont look black so😑
Little Ethiopia?????? Nah that is definitely not where the best soul food is. Just checked out their history, they are not even a authentic soul food restaurant. If you want real authentic soul food you will not find it in Little Ethiopia or Hollywood.

🌟🌟🌟I'm a Foundational Black American, born and raised in Los Angeles. I have never ever heard any FBA talking about going to Annie's. With that said, I have been there, it's not the best in LA but decent. I prefer Fixins, Dulans, Granny Kitchen, and Alta.
Appreciate the referrals! I want to try them all. ♥️
Ditto for me but not dulan’s
I prefer Annie’s Bighomey103
Been to Annie's and the food is da bomb! Best soul food restaurants in LA hands down. I am glad they are still open and thriving. If you are in LA go and check them out. So cool of you to highlight this restaurant!
Thanks for your confirmation. I need to try it.
A WHITE woman got BLACK people in the kitchen cooking. BUT getting credit.
We can’t have nothing for WHITE people
Stealing from us . WOW! Well Annie
Whoever you are, you are a thief. Talking about SOUL FOOD. Black folks named ARE food Soul Food. Now you come steal that.

Something is a little off about this video, and the comments. Can't quite put my finger on it, perhaps it is just me. It is strange that I wouldn't have a comment about food from my culture, food my ancestors grew up on rather they wanted it or not. Can't figure this one out. Blessings!
There's a whole lot off about this it really tripped me out that an Asian
is eating soul food they don't really like to support blacks and we all know that so yeah there's a lot off about it
no thank you... would you really eat Korean, Chinese, Viet Meneese, or Japanese (sushi) food from any other group? Close but no cigar, there are plenty of AUTHINTIC places in LA for this type of meal. Note during the Korean war it is documented fact that a particular group of soldiers shared their cooking and cooking techniques in that country and now this. Spend money in LA from the restaurant that offer this plate from the community that perfected it. Comfort LA, Dulan's Soul Food, Watts Coffee House, The Serving Spoon, Gus's World-Famous Fried Chicken, The Trap Kitchen, Earls's on Crenshaw, M;Dears, Taste on Universal, Red;s Flower Table, Bayou Grille, Bludso;s BBQ, JR,s BBQ, Honey,s Kettle. #THE MORE YOU KNOW...
As of 12/29/2022, the restaurant is not open at either location (fairfax or northwestern). The address given is the address to a ghost kitchen. Found out the hard way be driving all the way to LA and standing in front of a ghost kitchen like a moron calling their number to a prerecorded message.
He’s right they’re not open also I called got a recording 8:15
good. hopefully they go under
Thanks for the update I'm coming next month to LA
Go to Chef Marilyn's on Crenshaw & Adam's (South of Adams). It's a dive, but good soul food. Prices not as cheap as they used to be, but still good. Oh, it's only for takeout.
43$ for that shit bbq platter hell naw LOL could make a rack at home easily
Wow, what an awesome place to eat. Yams, stuffing, beef ribs , okra you can't go wrong. I'm getting hungry.
One question: Is this a blackowned restaurant?
Thank you for sharing all these wonderful restaurants with us,Merry Christmas 🎄 and Peace on Earth 🌎 to all

I’m sorry, but Los Angeles does not have good soul food. I’m a native, I know
All that food looks extremely delicious!!!😋 I definitely would like to go there. As long as the food is good and the place is clean, I don't mind spending a little extra. Thank you for the great review!
You will love it
Stuffing at a SOUL food restaurant? Totally disrespectful & a HUGE violation! I hope that was a mistake! Let me check their menu before I attempt to visit!
If I can ever make it to a soul food restaurant like that I'm going for the catfish, oxtail w/red beans and rice. Wow that looks great!
That all sounds great now.
I'm from Mississippi where this kinda food is in every household.. soul food in big cities is almost Taboo.. its like a special thing for them lol. Love the review
Hope to make it someday
Most people in California that eat soul food make it at home... because we are from the South, at least our roots. We would never. Furthermore, good soul food is in the hood...most are not venturing there. I live in the "hood" but nothing like what's depicted on TV. I grew up with a garden in the backyard. Most southerners maintained their ways and taught their children.
@@avionterria7855 When did white people start making soul food.? That's like black folks owning a Chinese or Italian restaurant. They continue to steal from us!
@@valerieproctor7366 who said anything about white people? You lost me
That food looks fantastic 😍 I’ve never had food like that before.
I'm going to give it a try. Well done soul food is better than just about anything. That said, my go-to spot in LA is The Family, on Gage and Figueroa. Everything they do is pretty much spot-on. Even before I ever ate there, their bonafides were assured when my friend told me that this was the only place in LA where Black folks came to get chitterlings (if you don't get it, ask somebody), which I actually saw happen. The menu is VERY reasonable, and you get a lot of bang for your buck.

It's just food fake news
I love your videos! Merry Christmas, and God bless!
An Asian rating soul food😂 not sure I can trust him but the food does look delicious 😋
You got it right on questioning trust in an Asian rating soul food. That food looks salty as hell and cooked by none Blacks (as usual) who have little to zero soul trying to prepare soul food. The owner isn't even Black...which is how she was able to open a business in The Miracle Mile District...regardless to those hateful Ethiopians to have businesses there. This place is a hard pass for me personally!

Soul food is very subjective. The way it’s cooked depends one where your Southern roots are from. My mother was from Arkansas and my dad was from Texas. My dad’s fried chicken was so good, but he couldn’t cook greens as good as my mother. We every type of greens except collards. They weren’t a staple green for either parent. My mother cooked hot water cornbread, my dad did the oven kind. The best soul food I had outside of my parents’ house was a restaurant on Central a couple of blocks north of Slauson. Can’t remember the name, but the food was delicious!

FYI…. In Afro-American food culture, it is NOT called “stuffing”, it’s called, “dressing”, and it’s made with a cornbread base… Again, NOT “stuffing”, “dressing”….🤷🏾♂️
