Oh and I'm booked for three more sprint triathlons this year. Keep the videos coming
One serious fact is missing from the vid: Timing the kick to the arm movement - WHEN to kick? I mean it is visible in the video "more or less", but a detailed instruction would be helpful.
Yeah. Actually I have just watched a video where they say you shouldn't kick the same time as you do the hand stroke. But here the swimmer does just that.
As you pull you don't need to kick but be ready to kick once you've done the pull and you'll be moving into your next pull when you're done with your kick if that makes sense 😅
❤breast Stroke. Good lessons still I'm doing at age of 72+ years very comfortably.thanks a lot. I learnt swimming at age of 50 years and learnt many tricks from Dolphin.
i never was able to start with this technique. my legs were always sinking to the bottom even though I was trying to do everything like it should. i can do backstroke and freestyle. i might need to try it again with this video as it shows the technique pretty well.
I have a mandatory course in Phys Ed tommorow, thank you for making this, because I understand and agree with the importance of knowing how to swim, i don't like swimming and i don't do it often, hopefully this helps me.
Timing varies slightly from swimmer to swimmer, some videos tell you that you should start the kick phase once you have fully extended the arms, some like this one show that the swimmer starts the frog kick as soon as he's done with the pull. I've been revising my breaststroke technique and trying to find the optimal timing by starting the kick earlier (like in this video) or later, still I haven't understood which is better for me. I saw videos that have slightly different timing. If you watch breaststroke champions from underwater in slow motion (there are some videos out there) they don't have the exact same timing. Maybe it's personal.
Thanks for breaking this swimming style into logical pieces, helps a lot in understanding the mechanics of this stroke, however since focusing on my leg work and starting to push harderI have started to encounter knee pain, so I had to move to the butterfly kick to ease the pain. Do you know what may cause that or how can I prevent that? It is annoying and it actually pushes me away from the breast stroke style. Any advice would be more than welcome! Thanks!
I’ve always considered swimming as my nemesis. i’ve never been a strong swimmer and for some odd reason when i’m in the pool my mind becomes obsessed with how fast or slow i am going. I love the breaststroke but can never seem to master the kick. Coordination of everything including breathing has always been a challenge. Realising now as i take to swimming again (not to be defeated) i can actually use aids to isolate and work on the movements. I think the dolphin kick with BS would really work for me! thanks 🙏

I’m certainly not in denial that there’s a phobia even still at 49 y/o… I found you guys, because I realized day one (September 4th) of joining an athletic center, whatever kind of swim that I’m doing, it’s not symmetrical! 🤷🏽♀️😝 I’m whipping my muscles into shape for a trip next month and there’s snorkeling, surfing and scuba diving. I’ve NEVER done any of it, but I’ve always been curious, so I’m bringing in my 50th Birthday without limits - well, sort of!!! 🤣 Watching your video, mine is a breaststroke, but my head doesn’t submerge - although, I’m practicing holding my breath and going under. I’ll see if the lifeguards are allowed to give me pointers on what they see that I should correct. I’m swimming further, so that’s motivating. 👏🏽👏🏽
The kick kills me. I don't go anywhere. I end up doing the dolphin kick the whole way just so I can get from one side to the other without drowning. Yeah, I'm a bad swimmer.
Yeah, I still have a similar problem. It takes a lot of confidence to do the "proper" technique. I have a big problem simply with breathing and endurance. My heart and lungs need much more exercise.
i can do freestyle and backstroke and i have exactly the same problem as you. the kick is so weird to do for me, my legs always start sinking instantly whenever i try to do it.
i first practiced the kick motion on my bed lol i laid flat with my lower body hanging off the bed to get used to the kick motion and by the time i got in the water it was almost natural
Hi guys. Trying to get into swimming for cardio and weight loss because I have injuries to my knees and legs. I am a little confused on the timing of the kick to the stroke. Would you recommend I just master the freestyle first and eventual move on to the breaststroke?
This is my favorite too. And IMO, the next most taxing after butterfly (especially at competitive effort). Since it’s very inefficient and momentum driven to propel forward at speed. I easily get my HR to my peak (170 ish) when doing it at best effort.
Breastroke is the best stroke for cardio and a full body workout. Swimming 60-80 lengths of breastroke 2 or 3 times a week is the main staple of my fitness routine. I have knock knees which make me prone to injuries when running, but make the leg kick in breaststroke come naturally to me.
Are we allowed to use the Breast Stroke on the Full Ironman? I've improved my crawl significantly but I still find it easier to breathe on the Breast Stroke.
You can but this is more about creating a more rounded swim program. Breastroke builds body awareness in the water that most triathletes need to work on.
(1) Is it a good exercise of the kick when you disable your hands by hold your palms joines together on your lumbar spine? (2) does the exhale technique matter? I prefer to exhale with my mouth loose and slightly open (like in those Mach acceleration movies) but not sure if that induces more drag. I find it more relaxing though.
Hey! Nice work on the explanation. I really liked it. Just one question though - How should one coordinate hand and kick movement. They can be learnt independently, now is there any relation as to when should you move your arm in a particular direction depending on which stage of kick you are in? Please let me know
I was coming to confirm that as well. Had extensive lessons as a kid but only recently got back at it again after probably twenty years ha. Best I remember and what seems to be working is the pulling back phase or catching if they call it that, goes with the abduction (spreading) and extension of the legs as they push the water back. This all so that the water is pushed all at once and so that the soles back and toes down matches with the recovery and the arms and legs become relatively linear for a second.
After watching a few more vids, I realize that while you do end resetting in the “straight line”, the pull and breathe really does come before most of the kick. Then your head is back down, allowing maximal effectiveness of the kick. Maybe I need to practice again; though I could have enough muscle memory that I’m kind of doing this already and don’t feel it. But I can definitely always get better.
I have knock knees, which make running, and most things athletic, a real struggle, but the way my knees point inward makes breaststroke kick weirdly easy.
Usually I do drills with just the kick using a kick board. I also imagine myself as a frog. Sometimes it's helpful to even just get out of the water, lean on something, stand on one leg, and practice the movement. Don't forget to squeeze your legs together!
This is funny to me because breaststroke swimming is much easier for me than freestyle.I have completed 2 half IMs and 2 ODs (best: 30:53) using breaststroke. For example, I never get out of breath and I was able to pass slow freestyle swimmers in these races.breaststroking. But I cannot recommend copying it as it ruins your legs for the biking and running. Eventually breastroking is limited in speed due to body position and limited frequency of the leg propulsion. For me, this winter's training is dedicated to freestyle training while I will use breaststroke only for warming up/cooling down and recovery.
@@puetzranch Unfortunately, breaststroke and wetsuits do not work out together. A trisuit is no obstacle, though. But I'm still trying to improve my freestyle......
Hi GTN, just found your channel, love it :) thanks a lot for this and lots of other great stuff! A quick question on this video please? Thinking about working on breastsroke drills, how do rate Breaststroke fins? Specifically with a kickboard to help perfect my kick? Are they worth it? Thanks a lot! G

I wish you had shown more of whole body movement of the stroke where arms and feet move alternately. I swam this stroke for many years moving my arms and legs at the same time. Now I am trying to correct it but it is hard.
I'm returning to swimming after a six year absence due to shoulder injury at 40 and I'm feeling tension in my back when pushing out of the water. It feels like I'm hyperextended my low bacj. What are some troubleshooting things I can do to fix this? Could it be core weakness or lumbar stiffness? What can I do to resolve it? Thank you very much
Thie breast stroke is one stroke I struggled with in the pass. I failed my lifeguard certification class due to not knowing it very well. Being a lifeguard was always a dream of mine. Now I avoid dreaming big due to unexpected limitations. It’s humiliating to share, but I’m sure someone has had a similar experience
I go to Aqua Tots and a Level 5 and also they do the breast stroke a whole different way. They call it, "Diamond-out-squeeze". Your way is totally different, but I like it better than the Aqua Tots version!

This is my favorite too. And IMO, the next most taxing after butterfly (especially at competitive effort). Since it’s very inefficient and momentum driven to propel forward at speed. I easily get my HR to my peak (170 ish) when doing it at best effort.
Took me weeks to learn but my fav !!!!
Please share drills to coordinate hand and leg movements
Thanks guys, will practise this next week in the pool. Training for the Navy and the swim test has to be breast stroke wish me luck
Good luck mate
Trying to learn this, good at freestyle and back stroke, but I always sucked at this. Thanks for the tips.
Awesome, thanks!! 🎉
Thank you, very useful!
Beautiful practical demonstration ❤🎉🎉🎉
Thanks for the video 🙏
Thanks so much
Thanks
Great job
Well done
Hope to continue
my favorite stroke
Thanks for the video how interesting
Thanks for watching!
I like to it underwater it is so sick
😊
Freestyle is my favourite strokes..❤🥰
I find this stroke so hard to co-ordinate. Feels like there is so much to remember
I suck at this and swim tryouts tomorrow, in hindsight I should have practiced this one more but whatever
Good luck! hope it goes well 🏊♀️
Are we allowed to use the Breast Stroke on the Full Ironman? I've improved my crawl significantly but I still find it easier to breathe on the Breast Stroke.
You can but this is more about creating a more rounded swim program. Breastroke builds body awareness in the water that most triathletes need to work on.
(1) Is it a good exercise of the kick when you disable your hands by hold your palms joines together on your lumbar spine? (2) does the exhale technique matter? I prefer to exhale with my mouth loose and slightly open (like in those Mach acceleration movies) but not sure if that induces more drag. I find it more relaxing though.
Very good lesson
i have a test of swimming in school and ur halping my:)
I know nothing about swimming but came to watch this🙏
I have always struggles with breaststroke, my legs don’t do the movement
I have knock knees, which make running, and most things athletic, a real struggle, but the way my knees point inward makes breaststroke kick weirdly easy.
most people say it's really easy but for me it's pretty hard
Usually I do drills with just the kick using a kick board. I also imagine myself as a frog. Sometimes it's helpful to even just get out of the water, lean on something, stand on one leg, and practice the movement. Don't forget to squeeze your legs together!
Yeah me too 😭
Same
How far down do you submerge your head in the water?
This is the only stroke that comes naturally to me
This is funny to me because breaststroke swimming is much easier for me than freestyle.I have completed 2 half IMs and 2 ODs (best: 30:53) using breaststroke.
Wetsuit suggestions for breaststroke?
Me too, but I have not had any luck in becoming fast or efficient with freestyle.
@@puetzranch Unfortunately, breaststroke and wetsuits do not work out together. A trisuit is no obstacle, though.
But I'm still trying to improve my freestyle......
Same for me, i find breastroke is easy for me, im going for my 1st trialthon this mac, hopefully i can fully utilise my breaststroke during swim
How does it ruin your legs for biking and running, especially if you mix it with freestyle?
Hi GTN, just found your channel, love it :) thanks a lot for this and lots of other great stuff! A quick question on this video please? Thinking about working on breastsroke drills, how do rate Breaststroke fins? Specifically with a kickboard to help perfect my kick? Are they worth it? Thanks a lot! G
How do we pull our arm
How does kick outlets.
this was good
In free style I am unable to take breath from side headed position I have to bring up front pl teach me how to take breath keeping head left and right side
I wish you had shown more of whole body movement of the stroke where arms and feet move alternately. I swam this stroke for many years moving my arms and legs at the same time. Now I am trying to correct it but it is hard.
Thanks for leaving us your feedback! Maybe we can come back to breaststroke tips? 🏊🏻
@@gtnThat would we great!
thanks guys!!
Thx
I’m at the pool rn alone and I might as well learn now
I'm returning to swimming after a six year absence due to shoulder injury at 40 and I'm feeling tension in my back when pushing out of the water. It feels like I'm hyperextended my low bacj. What are some troubleshooting things I can do to fix this? Could it be core weakness or lumbar stiffness? What can I do to resolve it? Thank you very much
How has the leg kick changed and is it more efficient and quicker thanks Peter
Thie breast stroke is one stroke I struggled with in the pass. I failed my lifeguard certification class due to not knowing it very well. Being a lifeguard was always a dream of mine. Now I avoid dreaming big due to unexpected limitations. It’s humiliating to share, but I’m sure someone has had a similar experience
I go to Aqua Tots and a Level 5 and also they do the breast stroke a whole different way. They call it, "Diamond-out-squeeze". Your way is totally different, but I like it better than the Aqua Tots version!
I love this stroke but I am so slow with it. thank you
The tan lines 😂
Nice make more videos❤
Just got interviewed to be a life guard so guess I should probably learn swimming techniques
Hey, i was just wondering about can you make a more deep explanation video about the kicks
Tomorrow im going to las vegas staying at mandalay bay and i really want to learn this when i get there
heloo sir
kindly advise the drills for Brest stroke
I go to this swimming 🏊♀️ class ☺️
The kickbgoes with the gllied
What order do you pull and kick? Is it same time or one after the other
Its unbelievable that so many people do this completely wrong, and when I tell them the right technique they start arguing...
