I've recently got into video editing and I have to admit that I've never been so interested watching a 40m long video. This cover all the basics, and I love it! Thank you so much.
@@WhyAreWeStilllHereJustToSuffer you can slpit it with the blade tool, then trim those two clips to cut the middle of the clip (that's how i do it at least, I'm not sure if there is another, easier method)
Ok but you cannot pause and resume inside a selection ( I and O shortcuits ) with the repeat mode. When you pause and resume, you're out of the selection. This is a very important thing to solve, but anyone have a way to do that or davince is really a crap?
This was so good. I downloaded resolve last night and have never edited a video in my life. I’m also not tech savvy but After watching this video i made my first video. Took 4 clips and put them together and made some cuts. So thankful for your easy to understand way of explaining things. You earned yourself a sub.
Congratulations! I remember the first video I edited. I had shot some footage of a very short (3 or 4 car) passenger train and so I edited it to make it appear as if the train was 3 times longer. It was then that I realized how powerful editing actually is. It can change a story or make up a story that isn't even there.
Made my First edit on 3:26 A.M. on 23/12/23. Writing this so it will be a memory. Felt Great! Because I felt like I was doing something better for my Life instead of Games. I LOVE EDITING now and hope to be consistent and productive with it and live a better and happier life 😅😊. Also, the video was Great! Absolutely loved it! Best 40 minutes of my life 😊😊!!!
This is one of the most well structured, clear, and comprehensive UA-cam tutorials I’ve seen. I wish more tutorials were as well thought out like this.
I absolutely love the two person format! Having two voices is so much more interesting, especially with those clarifying questions sprinkled along the way! I'm sure this took a bit more planning, but man I really found this easy to watch and helpful!
I am new to DaVinci Resolve. I just want to say you have taught me alot and I've only watched half of the video. I'll be finishing it today. So far I think it's fun editing. But I know it's time consuming but worth it. Thank you both for keeping it simple and for being able to explain how to use it. I was watching a video before I came across this one and he sucked at being able to explain how to edit. Thank you again for taking the time to share with us on how to edit.
Congratulations Casey I am thrilled to learn da Vinci from you. I am super grateful to educational UA-camrs like both of you. Kevin, The first time I ever saw one of your videos, I didn't like them. maybe they were too good or the topic what the topics aren't exactly my favorites. I was wrong not to check with you first when I want to learn a new skill. I try very hard not to judge a cover by its book or let first impressions fool me! I know a lot of people do that to me it hurts sometimes. And sometimes first impressions are detrimental to my success. Now I think you're one of the greatest content makers I've ever seen. Absolute great educator ! ! I'm super grateful for your videos.
I've seen tons of videos for various non-linear editors. I used Premiere Pro for over 20 years and gave up on Adobe when they went to that subscriber model. So it was with some joy I found DaVinci and while playing around with it, realized that despite some similarities with PP, there are lots of differences. So more joy when I found this turorial. It is absolutely perfect in every way. The questions asked by the "beginner" and the answers by the expert are just right on. I've taken 50+ courses in my life (in classrooms mostly) and I always had questions when something was glossed over. But not here. As I'm thinking of a question, it gets asked, then answered. The show 'n Tell is stunningly clear: big mouse indicator, nice slow zoom in to a high res display of the daVinci screen. I've seen some where they show just the lores screen with small regular mouse arrow that is impossible to follow and labels impossible to read. You guys have set the bar for proper method of doing a tutorial. I say this as a former instructor in Industrial Instrumentation and Controls, and working and teaching in the industry for 30 years. Good work. I subscribed!
I learnt more from this video that from a heap of others. I'm hooked. Thanks. I am nearly 80 years young, and I must confess, I do not grasp things like I used to, but I got this OK. Thanks again.
Without doubt one of the best instructional videos I’ve watched. Excellently presented in a very well paced way. So often video tutorials are made by people that just gabble away and one gets lost in seconds. Not with your presentation. Absolutely perfect. I’ll be back for more.
I have been trying to learn DaVinci Resolve for weeks including your guest's 4 hour plus tutorial and have been overwhelmed with detail. This has been the most useful video by far because unlike many of the other tutorials he actually shows and explains which buttons, keys, whatever, activate whatever function you're trying to. Amazingly, so many other videos don't show those details and so they're essentially useless for a beginner who doesn't already know. Really excellent job of explaining the basics and including that stuff on zooming and especially how to get things back is a really good idea because the other day while trying to edit I got somehow the timelines so tall you couldn't see many other things and I spent over an hour trying to get things back and at one point thought I had broken Resolve and would simply have to delete it and redownload it. Your video is awesome and I wish I had seen it before wasting that hour getting more desperate all the time when I couldn't get it to resize no matter what I did. A real public service to post this--the best tutorial on this subject by far that I have seen. Thanks so much for the hard work to make this manageable because it's hard to know how much to include for beginners that's clear enough to understand but contains few enough details not overwhelm. You did this balancing really, really well. Casey is wonderful but I would tell rank beginners to start with your's and then move to his 4 hour one or others because finally I understand many basics that other videos addressed but didn't get the concepts over well enough for me to get it. Thanks again. Will be subscribing to your channel.
Literally just downloaded DaVinci Resolve and followed this UA-cam tutorial to heart. It managed to predict and answer my very next question and guided me on all the necessary functions to create a decent basic video :) Very helpful and thank you!
I've been using Blender Video Editing for about a year now. It's great and I enjoy it but I've been looking for something else than can be a little easier when video editing and I'm just so impressed by the functionality of DaVinci Resolve. Great tutorial, can't wait to applying what I've learned so far!
Same here... Editing my latest video in Blender was such a pain... full of bugs and weird stuff that I just wanted to go for the best program out there, and I am not disappointed.
This video is excellent. I am new to editing, new to making videos and new to Davinci. Guess you can say I just crawled out from under my rock. Watching this video has given confidence. I've already completed several videos, while not perfect, they are decent. Clear explanations and demos. Thank you!
I think that this well presented video should be supplied with every copy of DaVinci Resolve 18 . Many thanks to Kevin and his guest Casey Faris . The great thing about these two presenters is that they are confident enough of their skills and subject matter to talk to us at normal conversation speed . This shows respect for their audience and that they are teachers who actually want to pass on their extensive knowledge and experience to us trying to learn a really great product . Thank you Kevin and I have to say a big thank you also to Casey . Kind regards Ray .

This was the absolute BEST introduction to DaVinci Resolve I've seen. I finally got started without crying over all the tricky choices. Well done guys.
I'm 12 minutes into this video and i just wanted to say thankyou! This seems so doable, you guys are explaining it like absolute pros! looking forward to making compilations of the good times in life.
This is an outstanding video. I've been using Premiere and I must say, the way you both have presented this from a viewer's perspective is commendable--not rushed and perfectly paced with the appropriate questions that a beginner would want to ask. Really well done. I'm tempted to switch to DaVinci. 😄
I went from never editing a video to creating a short within roughly two hours thanks to this video. Absolutely INCREDIBLE tutorial. My only struggle has been editing large portions on my timeline simply to get clips then having to cut out the leftover, but I'm sure with time I'll have a better process! Thanks again!
I absolutely love this format, the 40 minutes flew by even tho I am a bit familiar with Resolve. Thank you for the incredible explanations, tips, and tricks.
Initially I believed it'd take between 4 to 5 hrs. per every 1 hr. of raw video to completely edit and upload a video to UA-cam (with added text, audio and video clean up as such). But as they say "..speed comes with experience..." and this 'HOW TO' is definitely the priceless tool needed to accomplish that. Now....I'm anticipating an hour for editing per hour of raw footage (plus uploading). Thanks for the well needed help fellas.😊
Simply explained, pertinent questions, and easy to follow. By far one of the best tutorial videos I’ve seen for any programme. Well done to you both, and thank you!
Davinci looks so much better than what im working with(sony vegas 2017) this was a very good beginner tutorial and easy to follow along, not to fast and not to slow, just perfect...thank you 🥰
I also finally decided to transistion from Sony Vegas Pro 14 to Davinci Resolve, and it helps that a lot of the things are very similiar. Definitely going to give it a shot!
I’m back watching you guys again. Edited about 4 videos on DaVinci Resolve now, very nerve racking, and maybe not the best, but trying to keep going. Thanks again.
This tutorial was exactly what I need. And I loved the concept, of one moderator which ask questions and the other one shows the answer. Because the moderator, in this case Kevin, puts exactly the right question I also have. I just switched from another video editor, and this tutorial helps me to have a fast and smooth transition without loosing time exploring myself the base things. Thank you!
This is actually amazing. It's definitely catered for people who are completely new to Resolve. I know general shortcuts from other editing software, but getting refreshers/confirmation was awesome. Resolve has been a huge pain for me to learn just cause the approach is pretty different from what I'm used to. Thank you so much for this!
Amazing video. Covered everything, every question I thought of was immediately answered in the next few minutes, and the order everything was taught was set up perfectly, thank you soo much for this, I'm sure a lot of people learned a lot from this video. You two should be proud of yourselves
I've be searching for the best tutorials in editing for beginners for a very long time. Explained very well as simple as that. Gonna make my first video using your tutorial. Thank you Kevin.
Oh my, thank you so much for this! Breaking complex matters down to beginner level isn't always an easy task, but certainly shows that someone is an expert! You're both incredible! Thank you!
If i could kiss this video i could lmaoo never in my life have i ever internalized and understood a tutorial video so well I’m so impressed!!! Thank you for giving personable examples and references that would help us understand it better. Such a great video
Said hundreds of times, but really nice zero to “I can do something useful” video. Learning is best done by playing around, but for that, something working is required. You perfectly set up a nice base for extension!
Absolutely love that Kevin asked all the same questions I'd be ready to ask if I was being taught live! It's so great to find any kind of tech video aimed at someone with zero preexisting knowledge on the topic. Super excited to make my first video this week!
Kevin, You did a great job to get a spokesperson to go over the Resolve 18! This is a really great video to help all of us start out to get into editing and to make better videos!! Thanks so much, you are the best!!
I just got this program coming from iMovie. I was completely overwhelmed but this video really gave me the confidence to start using it. Davinci is 1000% better. Thanks for the help guys.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I've decided to do video editing to help my wife publish content about the crafts she makes, and this tutorial nailed what I needed to learn. Da Vinci Resolve is ALREADY highly recommended by two channels I follow on youtube, Stephen Georg (stephenplays, stephenvlog) and Corridor Digital (Corridor and Corridor Crew), and I found YOUR channel when I was learning with the basic editor on Windows 11. Seeing this tutorial was really, really helpful, it was very nice and concise about all the necessary details for beginners, while providing enough leeway to get creative. I love the back and forth, humor, and the Q&As that were brought up. Again, THANK YOU.
Wow this tutorial is amazing! I was not so keen to learn about video editing but you guys made things look easy. Thank you sir Kevin and Casey. Will follow Casey also and watch more of the tutorials.
So cool,..thanks for the comprehensive down to earth tutorial on DiVinci Resolve. Looks way better than what I am currently using. You made a believer out of me.
If anyone is wondering why it is not possible to hover over the source at 12:44, it's because a newer update added Live Preview Mode. You can disable it in your Edit Tab by clicking the 3 dots between the timer and 30%. This will allow you to use your mouse to hover again.
I've been working with Da Vinci a few years before and I found out a lot by looking at tutorials. Just came back because all the other tools just did not satisfy my needs or I got lost in them. Gosh! this tutorial is so great. I love the interaction, I am impressed by how things are explained. Being a teacher I really have to complement on how you bring all this subject over the footlight....I will certainly be back.
The analogies are amazing, helped a lot with comprehending the various concepts. I wish more people would utilize analogies to bridge the gap between well-known concepts, such as ingredients to a complete dish, vs new concepts, individual clips to a timeline
This is quality content! 👌 I just installed DVR 18, and my layout after reset is completely different. Would be soooo cool, if there would be an importable file with the layout settings from this tutorial, I actually quite dig the default you have.
Great video. I have been using Premeire Pro and love it,but the cost really sucks. I have tried Davinci off and on but never fully committed to it. Now I am trying to commit to Davinci, and will buy the studio license soon, so this was helpful. Will be subscribing to both to learn more great stuff.
am just a beginner, this mah third day learning Davinci Resolve 18. as far as i can tell, the flow is quite great... looking forward to learn more en become professional in Davinci...from you guys.. lets kick in...
This made my switch from Hitfilm really comfy. Glad to see that a lot of what you've learned from previous media editors can be applied in a lot of instances. It's already been said but the two person format is great as well. Having one person asking questions from the perspective of a complete novice is handy and worth the extra effort.
I am just starting video editing and this is an extremely useful tutorial! I am 20 mins in and had to pause it to like and comment on it. Great work guys!!!
THE best tutorial on the internet for davinci . i agree with others they asked all the questions any newbie to resolve would! i was totally confused by others on the internet . This answered all my questions. Save you time people and just watch this!
This is the best tutorial in my life. I know zero about editing but I followed this steps and now I can comfortably edit my UA-cam videos. Thank you so much for helping me. 🙏
Hello Kevin, when you were demonstrating version 17. I downloaded it, you feel this version has got a lot over version 17 and worth upgrading to it as far as the free version. Thank you Michelle
It's free to upgrade so might as well. That way you always get the newest features. This page lists all the newest features in 18: www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/davinciresolve/whatsnew
Kevin, I had an opportunity to purchase the Studio version cheaper elsewhere, but when I saw that it would help you, I chose to purchase from you. You have been a valued resource for a long time & I’m happy to be able to give back to you in some small way. Cheers, Michael
You may never see this comment..but thank you so much for making sure everyone understood before going into the next step... Also, thank you for making sure we had alternative methods to accomplish the same thing..(hence..drag and drop media...or.. what is media..things many pros take for granted that others know) You made sure we were fed nutritional baby food...and before it ended, we grew teeth and learned to chew). Thanks so much to the two of you! I'm subscribing to both of you!💪🏿💪🏿
While exporting, I decided to delete footage to export the intro of my video separate from the body and ending of the video. I thought, no big deal, I'll just use UNDO command to get my clips back after I export. However, instead of UNDO command, I needed to quit the program which then DaVinci Resolve autosaved. When I reopened the timeline, all I had left was the intro and COULD NOT UNDO my actions from earlier. Please help!
@@matthewcheung5136 No problem. And in the future you can always render a select portion of your timeline. On the export screen you can drag the gray bar directly underneath the time markers in your timeline to define that portion. It's referred to as rendering the In/Out Range, if you want to look into it more.
One of the best intro tutorials I've ever used, I feel like been equipped to understand the very basics well and been given a baseline to experiment more from. Thank you!
Throwback when I first watched an Adobe Illustrator tutorial. I finished the whole UA-cam tutorial with excitement. Same feeling with this one! Good job.
Months later but I have to say great video! I actually had downloaded Resolve about a year ago but was a little intimidated by the layout so I gave up pretty quickly. I'm coming from Vegas Pro so yeah it's VERY different! This gave me what I needed. Thanks!
Thank you for this video! I'm really motivated to use DaVinci for my next video. BUT, there is one thing that is holding me back 😅I don't know where to adjust my workspace to make it look like yours. I am also missing things like the slider to adjust the timeline... I've tried zooming in and out with Shift + scroll wheel but that doesn't work either 🙄 The most annoying part is that I can see that there is more on the right side of my screen (don't know how to describe it better) that I can't access. HELP😃I know there is most likely a very quick way to fix this and it took me a bit of courage to type this text. But I am honestly have no clue and I am hoping to help others who have the same issue. TIA ♥
Beginner here, This tutorial video is what is going to get me into video editing. Thank you very much for making it. DaVinci Resolve is an incredible intuitive program to work with once you understand how the basics works
This is probably the best begginers tutorial in the video editing…i edited some clips on my phone in iMovie app, is a decent editor…i edited 2 “cinematics” if i can name it like this 😅 but now…dude, a new world was open. I admit that i never tried to edit in an professional editing program, and i just want to make some cinematics with my iPhone and an gimbal…so i admit that is pretty basic compared to what an youtuber do, but this video…is absolutely brilliant start! Thanks a lot for the effort! 🤝🏻🥂
I love how you put the focus on explaining the functions and not making the perfect commercial for the cookie company! Really clear explanations too, great tutorial! Thanks :)
Ive been editing for more than 12 years and have learned multiple softwares. For any beginner this is a great tool to just have in general. Resolve is intuitive if you are transitioning from Premiere and honestly I kinda like the interface a little bit better. Great Job!
i'm half way through this video, and I can really say this is a great format. Q&A while showing the most important pieces of the software to navigate around. Great job
I am a UA-cam creator and also watch a lot of UA-cam. This video is superbly made and does EXACTLY what it says on the tin. A crystal clear from-the-bottom-up tutorial that you just understand and can't stop watching. Compulsive viewing that has made me feel much more confident to finally move away from iMovie. Thank you for this excellently executed video (oh, and a new sub here!). ATB - Ben, UK 🇬🇧
Omg you guys are sooooooo amazing. This is how tutorials should be done. I can’t believe I finished the whole video and still would want more. Thank you soooooooooo much
That was a very friendly intro. I've been using several video editors, and just downloaded DaVinci for the first time. It was very nice to start using the program with your help.
I see you've had so many views and comments that you don't need more "thank yous" but here's another one. Thanks so much for an informative tutorial. It was awesome!
Amazing tutorial from a beginners pov kevin was asking all my concerning question , really worth the 40 mins guys u will get a general idea of the software.
Thanks Kevin and Casey. This is a very good start for a guy like me who is just relearning all this at the age of 63. l have always believed that you are never too old to learn and the only limits to what you learn are the limits you put upon yourself.
I would totally love to see the end result of your first edit
Go!!! I wish you the very best. Cheers to more productivity.
👏👏👏👏👏
omg making memories, the best!
This is one of the most well structured, clear, and comprehensive UA-cam tutorials I’ve seen.
I wish more tutorials were as well thought out like this.
Thanks Steve glad you enjoyed it. I’m drinking milk.
I absolutely love the two person format! Having two voices is so much more interesting, especially with those clarifying questions sprinkled along the way! I'm sure this took a bit more planning, but man I really found this easy to watch and helpful!
yes i love it too but do you know how i can cut the middle. of a clip
@@WhyAreWeStilllHereJustToSuffer Go to Blade mode (shortcut is b key) and click in the place in the clip you want to split. Hope this helps
Yeah, interviews are always interesting to watch
Yeah, it really felt like a genuine conversation between a student and a teacher. I really liked it!

Loved the tutorial and the fact that Kevin asked the questions as if he was the beginner. Thanks to you both! and it was very easy to follow.
Congratulations Casey
I am thrilled to learn da Vinci from you.
I am super grateful to educational UA-camrs like both of you.
Kevin,
The first time I ever saw one of your videos, I didn't like them.
maybe they were too good or the topic what the topics aren't exactly my favorites.
Thanks again.
this is the most beautiful and wonderful tutorial I have ever seen in my 22 years of watching tutorials . straight to the point I love it
Without doubt one of the best instructional videos I’ve watched. Excellently presented in a very well paced way. So often video tutorials are made by people that just gabble away and one gets lost in seconds. Not with your presentation. Absolutely perfect. I’ll be back for more.
I am trying to follow it and have NO success.

This is a brilliant video. Clear, concise, and not bloated. Pure teaching quality. Thank you so much!
Fantastic video for a noob like me! I learned so much and didn’t feel overwhelmed 😁😁👍🏼👍🏼
I absolutely love this format, the 40 minutes flew by even tho I am a bit familiar with Resolve. Thank you for the incredible explanations, tips, and tricks.
I'm just a newbie but I found your video very instructive, thanks for your efforts.
Hey Kevin - This was the perfect training for me - loved the way you asked Casey the types of questions we beginners would ask!
Thanks guys! Switching from Movie Studio Platinum 16 to DaVinci Resolve 18 for all my videos.
Very great explanation!
Thank you so much, great tutorial!
Simply explained, pertinent questions, and easy to follow. By far one of the best tutorial videos I’ve seen for any programme. Well done to you both, and thank you!
Glad you liked it!
Love these beginner tutorials of high-end professional "free" applications. How about one on Gimp from a power user for beginners.
Here's a video I did on GIMP a little while back: ua-cam.com/video/LX-S1CX1HUI/v-deo.html
Really!
Davinci looks so much better than what im working with(sony vegas 2017) this was a very good beginner tutorial and easy to follow along, not to fast and not to slow, just perfect...thank you 🥰
In the same boat. Looks and acts practically the same so the transition over should be fairly seamless. Best thing is that it is free!
This was incredibly informative. The two person format was great! All the questions being asked directly felt way more interesting and easy to absorb.
This by far is the best DaVinci Resolve beginers turorial that i've come across. I've learned so much through it.
Been a Filmora user for the past couple years but going to make the jump to DaVinci and your tutorial was a big factor in that decision, well done!
This tutorial is exceptionally well done, amazing work and thanks to you both.
This is a really great beginner's tutorial and well broken down. Definitely made me feel less intimidated starting out. Thanks for this!
@Didii Tv can't download not even close
Absolutely love that Kevin asked all the same questions I'd be ready to ask if I was being taught live! It's so great to find any kind of tech video aimed at someone with zero preexisting knowledge on the topic. Super excited to make my first video this week!
Kevin, You did a great job to get a spokesperson to go over the Resolve 18! This is a really great video to help all of us start out to get into editing and to make better videos!! Thanks so much, you are the best!!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for the note!
I love how simple yet informative this video was. Thank you.
I use analogies for my music and things like that
This is quality content!
I do gotta recommend lower the brightness and higher the contrast. It makes the colors more colorful, it makes them stronger
Most awaited tutorial, thanks Kevin :)
Enjoy!
This made my switch from Hitfilm really comfy. Glad to see that a lot of what you've learned from previous media editors can be applied in a lot of instances.
It's already been said but the two person format is great as well. Having one person asking questions from the perspective of a complete novice is handy and worth the extra effort.
Another great toritural. Does DaVinci Resolve 18..I would've never thought of this video editing software
That joke on the sound volume adjustment was needed 😂😂😂😂
This is the best tutorial in my life. I know zero about editing but I followed this steps and now I can comfortably edit my UA-cam videos. Thank you so much for helping me. 🙏
Hello Kevin, when you were demonstrating version 17. I downloaded it, you feel this version has got a lot over version 17 and worth upgrading to it as far as the free version. Thank you Michelle
It's free to upgrade so might as well. That way you always get the newest features. This page lists all the newest features in 18: www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/davinciresolve/whatsnew
Kevin,
I had an opportunity to purchase the Studio version cheaper elsewhere, but when I saw that it would help you, I chose to purchase from you.
You have been a valued resource for a long time & I’m happy to be able to give back to you in some small way.
Cheers,
Michael
You may never see this comment..but thank you so much for making sure everyone understood before going into the next step... Also, thank you for making sure we had alternative methods to accomplish the same thing..(hence..drag and drop media...or.. what is media..things many pros take for granted that others know) You made sure we were fed nutritional baby food...and before it ended, we grew teeth and learned to chew). Thanks so much to the two of you! I'm subscribing to both of you!💪🏿💪🏿
thank you guys it's a very helpful tutorial 👍
Glad it was helpful!
Outstanding job Kevin, as usual from you. Thank you very much!!
Backups are made by default go to the folder housing them. Look in preferences to see where they are stored.
@@Vladyyy thanks I’ll double check

TIA ♥
same, waiting on answer too.
Maybe on the bottom you have chosen "cut" instead of "edit". I had the same problem, not even having the toolbar with the slider on it.
Beginner here,
This tutorial video is what is going to get me into video editing.
Thank you for going over the steps so clearly, slowly, thoroughly- this is the best beginner tutorial I found.
Glad it was helpful!
Great job

Watching this tutorial today, am loving it and my work is coming out nicely, thnx bunch guys, definitely following ❤ for more
I'm more impressed by how well you two presented this than I am by the content, and the content was fantastic! Thanks very much gents.
Will be looking in on you guys both for more information on DaVinci Resolve.
Thank you both again for this production.
Good job man, to keep you up to date! 🙌
