  • Downtown/Śródmieście Warsaw is a beautiful area, the buildings, the art, the trains, the trolleybuses. It's all so nice, clean, and beautiful.
I aimlessly walk around, looking at whatever my comey way. Warsaw doesn't disappoint.

I'm from Berlin and I've been to Poland a few times already (on vacation). Do you plan to stay in Warsaw for now or will you use the time to travel to other cities as well? If so then I can really recommend visiting Gdansk, Wroclaw, Poznan, Krakow and Zakopane (Polish "Swiss"). Poland does not have any real metropolises like the USA, Canada or Germany, for example), but the density of particularly beautiful cities is very high for the size of the country. I really liked that when I was there. Anyway: Have fun and stay safe!

11:14 - Warsaw Water Filters, also known as Lindley's Filters (Polish - "Filtry Lindleya") is one of three Warsaw waterworks, and is located in Ochota between Koszykowa, Krzywickiego, Filtrowa and Raszyńska streets. The waterworks was finished in 1886 using William Lindley's design. Since 1973, Warsaw Filters has been on the antiquities list.

The places I would recommend are:
    1. Zamek Krolewski - Royal Palace
    2. Palac Kultury i Nauki - Palace of Culture and Science (characteristic cubic structure, perfectly visible from a distance)
    3. Centrum Nauki Kopernik - Copernicus Science Centre (supposedly closed on Mondays, I do not know how it is now)
    4. Cmentarz Powazkowski - The Powazki Cemetery (beautiful historical graves, tombs, catacombs, mostly famous people are buried here)
    5. Palac w Wilanowie - Wilanow Palace (unfortunately I have not been there, but it is said to be very beautiful)
    6. Lazienki Park - Lazienki Park
    7. Grob Nieznanego Zolnierza - Tomb of the Unknown Soldier
    8. If you feel like it, you can go to Zelazowa Wola to see Friderick Chopin's birthhouse.

śródmieście = shrood myesh chye (not quite, because there's no equivalent of ś and ć in English, but closer to what you thought)
It's interesting you decided to wander around a not that interesting area of Warszawa. If you went into another direction you would have ended up in Stare Miasto - the Old Town. How long are you planning to stay in Warszawa? If you have time, you really should visit and definitely see the King's Castle and the exhibit of how the Nazis burned and bombed the castle and then the history and the struggle to rebuild it.
You sound like you like history, and if that's true, you might like the Warsaw Museum in the Old Town Square at Rynek Starego Miasta 28-42. Also go past Barbikan and walk around the New Town (founded around 1408). My American friends that visited Warszawa with me in 2018 laughed when I told them the New Town is from the 15th century. Once you're done with the Stare and Nowe Miasto, you might enjoy a walk down Krakowskie Przedmieście and Nowy świat.
I'm really impressed with the fact that you looked up the history of the Palace. Once you feel you can visit it, go to the viewing deck up on top with nice views, though you can also get nice views from Taras Widokowy na dzwonnicy kościoła św. Anny at Krakowskie Przedmieście 68.
The garden on the rooftop of the library of Uniwersytet Warszawski at ul. Dobra 56/66 also has nice views, and the library is right next to Bulwary Wiślane - Vistula Boulevards, another nice place for a walk. I haven't watched all of your videos so I don't know how old your girlfriend's son is, but if he's old enough to enjoy a Museum of Science, Centrum Nauki Kopernik - Copernicus Science Centre is across the street from the library. Ukrainian refugees can get in for free, I think.
By the way, the people of Warszawa are called Warszawiacy.
(edit - I just noticed you've already been to the Old Town :) Sorry. Going to watch it right now.)

The church tower has no roof, because German troops badly damaged the church during the siege of Warsaw in 1939, and then nearly complety destroyed it during and after the Warsaw Uprising of 1944 (when they first expelled the remaining civilians and then demolished 90% of buildings in Warsaw, using explosives and flamethrowers). Reconstruction of the church took about 15 years, but the roof was not (re)built.

Instead of trying to erase the part of your history, why not benefit from it and turn it all in your favor? I don't like the idea of being like those "smart" russians who are smashing their Apple tablets with a hammer as a sign of so called "protest against the sanctions". A frequently repeated joke in Warsaw
Favorite place of Varsovians for meetings?
The terrace of the thirtieth floor of the Palace - because the Palace itself cannot be seen from there

Polish is not Ukrainian with latin letters, but Ukrainian is Russian with Polish (or Old Polish) words 😉

Could you imagine that 7000000 Ukrainians will pass through Poland?

I hope that Bryce will not mind me touching upon a painful matter in Polish-Ukrainian history - the slaughter of Polish civilians by Ukrainian nationalists. What I am curious about is if regular everyday Ukrainians consider it a shameful crime or they justified it in their mind? Since there is a large Ukrainian community in Canada, what do Ukrainian Canadians think about it?
Someone could say that it is not the best time to bring it up, but I think that there will never be a good time to talk about it. The fact that this matter was never settled, makes it a proverbial ‘elephant in the room’. Also, I think that even if most Ukrainians don’t have any sympathy for women and children that the OUN/UPA fighters killed, they still deserve help they receive in Poland.

I'd prefer a Ukrainian answer this question for you, someone who knows all the aspects of the history and had a dog in the fight.

@@bryce.walker The reason that I asked you is that I wanted hear a neutral opinion. A Ukrainian can tell me what he or she thinks about it, but I wanted to know what most Ukrainians think of that. If a Ukrainian will tell me what Ukrainians think of the issue, such opinion will be tainted by his/her personal views. Yours wouldn’t. Besides, bringing it up with Ukrainians would inevitably put them on the defensive.
I just realized that it may put you in a bind. Never mind!
