- Continuing reviewing the Monster High movies. This one was heavily requested, as there's a special surprise at the end of the movie. And it's a musical to boot. How well does this hold up? And are the glaring errors something we can look past?

I love that the A plot is about Catty finding her music and stuff, B plot is Cleo and Deuce’s drama, and the C plot is Ghoulia stopping a comet from DESTROYING THE FREAKING WORLD! Priorities people, priorities.
It's their most ambitious movie and it worked out! They even introduced so many characters and reinforced old ones. This MH era is so nostalgic.
The comet plot was so silly to have it in the Boo York film. It could've been its own 40-minute TV special.

Am i the only 1 to notice that whenever a show is in a big city background theres lots of plots going on at the same time? I mean like secret life of pets ( gidget was trying to get into the cats place, while snowball tried to rescue a tiger, and max overcoming his fears) and gossip girl, and same with this movie

I like how the part of the point of the movie is like catty getting inspired or whatever bc she's a famous singer, yet LITERALLY ALL THE MONSTERS sing like professionals. 💀

Animation. Tails are one of the hardest things to animate as they have to move in specific ways and so they’re harder to animate. It’s bigger in 2D (it’s why a lot of people do less fingers on hands or try and hide tails as much as possible to avoid animating them)
I love Boo York, but my one complaint is the fact that they had Operetta join the main cast, simply because it's a musical, and they didn't even give her her own song!! You have the daughter of the Phantom of the Opera, probably the most well known musical ever and you don't have her sing even once?!?!?!
Apparently in G1, part of Operetta’s monster powers is that if she sings in front of people they will get hypnotized or get put into a trance or something like that. I don’t remember if it they mentioned that it’s safe to listen to a recording of her voice or not (I think in her diary it’s mentioned somewhere). So I think that’s probably it.

@@biancaondatje8639 Are you kidding??? That has the potential to be plot relevant!! Since the comet was on a direct collision course with Scaris then we could have gotten a musical number of her managing an evacuation by hypnotizing the crowd, so that there wouldn't be panic. And that's just at the top of my head.

TJ Smith (Seths VA) said they had no time to redo the songs, he was meant to sing his own songs because he is a singer, but they said they needed to get the movie out.
That's a shame that Mattel, back then, is as clueless and silly as Hasbro today. Both companies need better people who can properly set up movies and take their time with EVERYTHING INCLUDING THE SONGS!!

As a city-born person, it's still exciting visiting other cities, because they can be very different. It is a little funny seeing people amazed by what is normal to me, but it's also endearing. It might be different for people from new york since their city is so very mythologized
I’m from New York City born and raised and it can definitely get boring. The thing everyone is excited about is ordinary to me. But the good thing about cities is that there’s always something new, nyc has changed a lot since I’ve gone to college (I come back every few months) so it allows me to always have soenthingn new to learn about my city.

I didn't realize that Astronova is supposed to basically be the Wishing Star/Evening Star/Evangeline. Explains why making promises or "wishes" on it (for what I can guess are marriages that will make empires prosper) are supposed to come true. And why they can keep going back and forth about the voices being taken and then not taken. Legends and lore can get distorted over time. What was once "you make a wish on the comet, it comes true" has turned into "you make a promise in front of the comet and it's set in stone." Also explains how the Wishing Star can be in New Orleans one night and England another 🤣 And how Torelei went from singing near a bridge to being on Broadway in an hour....
Also I have Peter Pan and Princess and the Frog on the brain xD
would've been cool if ever after high got a peter pan arc since the wonderland stuff was solved like for obvious reasons peter and the lost boys won't have decendants cuz they chose to not grow up but what if the lost boys want to go to school but peter says not to as going to school is growing up
we may get a teenage jane since she is Wendy's daughter

Won't happen as long as Disney's 'Descendants' still exists. Plus, I rather NOT have to deal with the rants, cries of cringe, and complaints towards ANY 'Ever After High' reboot as G3 'Monster High' continues to receive.
I would still like to see that movie that we got robbed of. The book that did happen was during g2 of monster high. It was okay but I still think the original concept was way better. Plus Mattel can't use Shadow High due to MGA having the rights for dolls.

It's my favourite monster high movie. It features my three favourite characters, Catty, Cleo and Nefera. I also love Luna.
I just wish they made a doll of Pharaoh because he's so cute and I love his relationship with Catty. The songs are such bops too!

about the rant that went into the ptolemaic dynasty in egypt, cleopatra was actually part of that greek bloodline who reigned over egypt, the queen cleopatra we all are familiar with was the first of her greek bloodline to even learn the langauge of her people. so its always bothered me that they use the actually family cleo should have been from as one she has to marry into. 😅
After the credits we get Astra Nova calling Raven Queen and Apple White from Ever After High. It's a nice little reminder that both are connected though they are located in different worlds.
So... Somewhere on the internet is a compilation of what they had finished for the crossover. It's animatics and scripts and stuff, but it's out there somewhere. If you feel like deep-diving.

Whenever i went over to my exgirlfriends house, we'd almost exclusively watch barbie or monsterhigh movies and although the relationship wasnt the best it did make me a longstanding monster high fan, this movie was my favorite lmao 💀
this movie is literally the only Monster High movie i was able to see. so boo york is really special to me. i used to play 'Empire' on repeat.
i was so sad how little of my girl operetta was in this.

As a dutch girl that grew up in a small city, going to Amsterdam is like a whole experience to me. I can’t even imagine living in a city like New York where everything is even bigger!
Spotify has full versions of all the Boo York songs, most of the songs contain an extra 2-3 verses, and I think it changes the vibe of the songs so much

I saw this movie when I was younger, it was my favorite of the Monster High movies, the main songs I remember are Empire and Shooting Stars. I think I mainly remembered Empire because it was the villain song and it kept getting stuck in my head.

about living it up in the city, yeaaaah. i live in LA and there isn't really much 'mystique' aside from maybe the tourist areas? like. you're dodging homeless, scammy type businesses set up on the sidewalk, Weird Mysterious Puddles, trash, vomit, needles, Piss Puddles :tm: aaand other. mysterious shit on the ground. its more like an irl gta level than anything lol
tho i do find myself kinda wistful about these types of montages bc DAMN i wish it was as nice as its portrayed in mh

And what sucks about that crossover is that it was 75% done befote they cancelled it due to the cancellation of Ever After High and the first reboot of Monser High

The ranking was a nice touch. Empire was my favourite but it began to feel lacking so Booyork became my favourite
Recently I found out the plot and storyboards for that MH x EAH crossover movie and ever since I found out what could have been I have been so bitter that we didn't get it
Dammit I would've loved to see that cross-over but who knows if the original writing/art team would be hired or even want to come back at this point.

We actually did get part of it. I’m pretty sure it’s on the monster high UA-cam channel. There is a bunch of short videos of DracuLaura and clawdeen , watching like in gray and white unfinished screenshots or like video footage of the crossover movie. It’s called the lost tapes.

The cross over is in a book, I forgot what it's called, but it's in the EAH book series.
There's also a movie that was supposed to happen, but they stopped the production because MH got a reboot and EAH was cancelled not long after. There's still stuff about the movie scattered on the internet, even the official MH youtube channel has a playlist with storyboards and sketches. It's called "The Lost Movie", I think.

I grew up in a big American city and moved to another one for college. It definitely doesn’t have “mystique”. It was just normal. It did make me more cautious/paranoid than my rural-raised friends but I love both my cities. Also they definitely aren’t grey. Downtown is a bit grey but most of both cities have lots of trees and plants and color. Lots of murals and pretty architecture and art

I’m literally from New York, when people do the whole “oh my god we’re going to new York” bit my first thought is: WHERE ARE ALL THE PEOPLE?
I recently and randomly thought of another place where a song could be put. What if there was a duet between Nefera and Cleo after Duce breaks up with her. I imagine that the chorus would be "As a princess" and then something that Cleo is "expected" to do, especially according to Nefera. The bridge could have her sing somberly about what she was supposed to do "as a girlfriend" to Duce, but then have the music and singing ramp up for the final chorus as Cleo has made her choice. It would be now that the two would sing together, or at least back and forth. Maybe you could sneak in a line at the end for Nefera, just to herself, singing about Cleo "as a puppet" or something like that where she's relishing in how she manipulated Cleo. I don't even remember what made me think of this idea, but I think it's worth sharing.

In one of the other movies (cant remember for the life of me which one, maybe great scarrier reef? or haunted?) theres a reference to the evil queens mirror. Torali walks past it while in the attic of the school and you can see the evil queens reflection through it for a moment.

‘Steal the show’ was the very first thing I saw of monster high and holy crap I loved it, I literally went to New York with my toys and I recreated a damn scene from that song!!
This movie genuinely slaps. I was seriously impressed when I binge watched all the og movies, this one caught me off guard with how good it was.
I kind of have a small bit of hope that the Ever After High and Monster High crossover will happen, but with the new generation, and not GEN 1, that is if we see Cupid
I've been living in "the city" for about 8 years and yeah, the mistique of it all kinda wears off? But my version of living it up is having a packed day or at least a packed morning. That mean going out, buying a clothe of some kind or just window shopping, treat myself to a nice restaurant, go walking a bit (in a park or in the city itself)
But I'm a bit cheating since I live in a small-ish city (between 500 000/ 1 mil person). Also I love my city it's so beautiful

i grew up in a smallish city (our tagline is literally “the biggest little city in the world”) but i can saw the mystique of living in a city wears off really quickly. it’s bright, shiny, and exciting- up until you look around the corner. then it gets a lot less pretty. but i will say that i live in the middle of the woods now, but i miss the city a lot
Either Why Do Ghouls Fall in Love or Friday Night Frights for the next review. Or maybe a review on the 2D Monster High specials New Ghoul at School and Fright on (the only two movies to be traditionally animated before moving on to CGI)

Not a city, but I a born and raised in Hawaii. Because of media, a lot of people from all over the world tend to picture Hawaii as gorgeous beaches and lush greenery and those who live here must go to the beach every day and surf, talk in typical surfer lingo, and spout some ancient Hawaiian proverb or life lesson. No, no. Depending on the person, people go to the beach often or not, but not everyday because we need to work in order to live here. The cost of living here in Hawaii is outrageous. People also wrongly assume that everyone born here is "Hawaiian". Also no, if you are born and raised here, then you're just a local. You are Hawaiian if you have native Hawaiian blood, otherwise you are one of many Asian and Pacific Islander ethnicities. 4th and 7th grade is where school curriculum teach Hawaiian history, both ancient and modern. It's really interesting and I love teaching it to my students, but by adulthood, those who don't care for it forget most of it anyway.
Those who are more aware in general don't base their expectations on media and have done their research. But I went to a local college here with a large number of international students. When I joined the freshman Facebook group, you'd be surprised of the questions some asked when I told them I lived here all my life.
Do we have electricity/wifi/plumbing? Yes, how else would I be on Facebook.
Do we only eat coconuts? No, thank god.
Will the volcano get us? No, the school is on Oahu, the active volcanoes are on the Big Island, also named Hawaii.
Where are the bridges between the islands? Apparently this person was looking at a map of flight paths for inter-island flights and thought the arches for the plan paths were bridges.
Can I get a lava rock as a souvenir? No, put those back.
I grew up in LA so movies that used Hollywood as some glitzy glamour place never worked on me, cuz Hollywood is very much stinky... WIth movies centered in NY tho, the trope did work on me for a bit until I realized that it's probably the same. (I visited NY this year and it felt like home, just with more rain!)

1.)I grew up in Las Vegas, I wouldn't call it a gray city. At least in Las Vegas, people who live there don't really go to the tourist areas every day, unless they work there. So it was still fun to go into the fun part of the city sometimes.
2.) The Empire song in this movie is sooo good

as someone that lives in antwerp (a city in belgium) ig the city isn't as big as new york city or whatever, it's still a city, i still enjoy watching these bc i know it's fiction and overly romanticized
