Well! What a surprise! A Metallica performance that I truly, deeply enjoyed! I thought they handled this piece beautifully and brought to it a lot more than merely a remake of the original.

Neil Young's son attended the Bridge School, Neil's generosity in organizing this long list of world-class musicians' concerts for so many years is admirable. The concert is defined as an acoustic however, guitars are plugged in for volume-enhancing but no pedals or sound effects like distortion, overdrive, fuzz, etc. are allowed. Kids from the school are watching the show from a podium set on the stage. Personally, I don't enjoy this cover. I know the song well and played it too many times to count. The forcing message by screams and mechanical repetitions is a disservice to this beautiful gentle music. The lack of dialogue between the singer and the guitar is missing which is a centerpiece and creates effective intimacy. The powerful anti-war statement is effective when it is sung quietly, with a detached attitude. Then, you feel as if you are a soldier on the battlefield who pays the price of war which is not yours, it is the war of the politicians that you don't trust. But the original is full of hope in us, while the cover does the opposite, it points the fingers at us and shouts as hard as possible that we are all fools; this is hopeless.

@@kentl7228 Thank you, kentl, I would add that in the original there is a feeling of hope, a weak, yet unshakable belief in humanity and common sense. The cover gives a sense of judgment and accusation, no hope for us, we are all FOOLS, FOOLS, FOOLS. It has no hope in it. For me, it takes away the beauty, the gentleness, the sensitivity to the other. The call and response dialogue between voice and guitar is a masterpiece here, it is unnoticed in that cover.

  • @kovie9162
    @kovie9162 Місяць тому +3

Another reaction angle is the use of popular music in TV shows and movies, to see if it hit or missed the mark. I don't keep a mental catalog of instances where it didn't work, but one example of where it fit the story perfectly was the original Dire Straits studio version of Brothers in Arms in an episode of The West Wing TV series where the main characters are going through a collective ordeal and are handling it by banding together as one. It's amazingly effective and fitting and never ceases to move me.
And speaking of TV and film, given that Amy is now doing a Siskel & Ebert thing, how about reacting to original TV and film music of note. For example, basically anything by John Williams, James Horner, Elmer or Leonard Bernstein, and Bernard Hermann. By the way, Mark Knopfler, the lead singer and guitarist for Dire Straits, has had a very notable second career as a film music composer.

  • @kentl7228

I like that Metallica likes this song. I like Metallica.
The problem here is that the original song is almost perfect. It is hard to make this song your own without lessening it's impact.
I think the singing is a problem at the end. Trying to add louder passion to a sombre song where the protagonist is weakening and dying.
It is a weeping song more than a fury song.
As a recommendation, the version that Knopfler did at the Mandela concert is amazing, because of the solo at the end. Knopfler checked out went into the zone and was quite passionate.

Great reaction. I'm glad you enjoyed this cover so much, even to the point of making your replay list. I had no idea going into this that you would find your new favorite Metallica song, which alone made this reaction worthwhile. This stays fairly true to the feel of the original, without going into a heavier metal interpretation. Letting you see a softer side of Metallica. For me it still sounds like Metallica due to Hetfield's vocals. As you noted, he really does drive home the message through repeating the line "we're all fools" at the end.

OHH I just noticed something important... I was looking up the acoustic version of Disposable Heroes to hear it again (since I reminded myself) and it's the same 2007 concert you hear here... the very next song. That little snippet of additional audio in your clip is at the beginning of that one, and it's them teasing the crowd with:
A few bars of an acoustic rework of And Justice For All. Just the intro, but that's something you're already familiar with and comes out really striking for a "doodle". Unfortunately it doesn't continue, but given how long and complex AJFA is and how hard they're working the strings on just the intro, I can't blame them :)

Yes Lee Kennison, it's a great reaction.
I am favorably surprised, I am not a Metallica fan, they have some great songs and I understand how Millions of people are fans.
James Hatfield's verbiage sounds this way when he sings, he's also a worthy guitar player.
For me it doesn't quite measure up to Dire Straits's version and most of us can listen to Mark Knopfler's guitar for hours, but it doesn't have to live up to the original, I don't think that it's a serious cover song, I believe that it's more of a homage. It sounds like the Brothers in Arms song "Metallicalized." Furter I agree with all of Amy's comments.
I still think that Amy should have a listen to Metallica performing with The San Francisco Philharmonic Orchestra since there are elements that are right up her alley.

Covering a song is a balancing act, what essence do you retain from the original and what of yourself do you imprint on it? James Hetfield is a very good judge on what parts of the original are important to maintain and which areas can be taken in a new direction. I think the artists with a degree of modesty generally make the best covers because they don't plaster themselves all over the original, they respect the aspects that made the song great in the first place.

    I was there, good concert.
There's a lot of critics here. Some context: this benefit is acoustic only. This was Metallica's first acoustic set ever. Neil Young asked Metallica to do a set to give the benefit a large bump, and they did. It's not their greatest performance ever, granted, and Metallica knew that going in, but they had fun and they did it anyway, for a good cause, knowing that people just like the critics here on this thread would have plenty to say. It's far bit braver than the comments about it ;).

Mark Knopfler (the composer) was actually born in Scotland, although he speaks with a Newcastle (North-East England) accent where he grew up. 'The Mist Covered Mountains' refers to the name of a traditional Scottish folk tune. I must admit I don't hear much Scottish intonation in these vocals and I don't really care for the over-the-top emoting, whiny, nasal vowel distortions, and the unnecessary additional commentary and repetitions in the lyrics. Less is more.
(Edit) Actually, on reflection, the way these vocals are delivered, some words being emphasised with a little fricative syllable at the end(-uh) and the whole thing building to an emotional frenzy, rising in pitch and hammering on a single repeated phrase with spontaneous interjections reminds me of American evangelical Gospel preachers. Perhaps that chimes with the setting of the performance and the cultural experience of the performers, but it's also why I find it alien and off-putting.

Oh, Metallica has been all over the stylistic map and, usually, are quite successful at whatever they try. As a band they are definitely *not* a one trick pony. Their recent cover of Elton John's Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding is proof (especially with the amount of recomposition needed since there are no organs or pianos, and it was performed live with Elton John present and loving it). I might have mentioned it before but another example is their recomposition of "All Within My Hands" from an ear-battering high speed nu-metal aural assault to an elegantly creepy and extremely well done acoustic performance with symphonic accompaniment. They've redone Blackened as well, the apocalyptic anthem from Justice For All was redone during the quarantines into an acoustic work and performed online streaming (with artists AT HOME, four different locations). Earlier they'd reworked Disposable Heroes to acoustic and brought it out into this driving/pulsing near sea shanty of a song. Just... wild.
Metallica is definitely more than musically competent :)

I’m a big Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler fan. I mean an HUGE Dire Straits / Mark Knopfler fan.
I didn’t love this cover; Kirk Hammett simply does not have Mark’s subtle tough on the guitar strings. Perhaps it’s better to say that he lacks command over his notes’ dynamics. And while I think James puts too much ‘Hetfield’ (unnecessary ‘yeah’s, mostly) into the song, once it picks up, I actually like his voice on the first verse, and I think he does it justice. You asked if James might perhaps be putting a little brogue into his voice; I don’t think so! I’ve heard him on other softer, gentler tracks, and those very round, sonorous ‘o’ vowels are straight up Hetfield. In fact, what struck me about this tune, and what strikes me whenever James plays a more laid-back style of music is how, in a parallel universe somewhere, I can imagine James being a great Country & Western singer.

As Amy originally said, the original is a duet between the voices of Mark Knopfler and of Mark Knopflers heart expressed through his guitar. This is a solo voice. Don't get me wrong, the guitar in this is excellent, but it's "just" an instrument played well; there's no voice in it. The original is too perfect for any cover to improve on it in any way, and this cover shows that statement to be true.

Singer sounds like he's having too much fun to suit the theme? 🤔

Every cover that Metallica does is better than the original. That's a fact!

If I were to hear this version first, I wouldn't listen to it again. This is such a bad cover of such a great song. I like Metallica, but this is just bad!
To be fair, I don't think I've ever heard a cover of any Dire Straits song that I like. That might be because Dire Straits (and Mark Knopfler, the lead singer, songwriter, and guitarist of Dire Straits) is by far my favorite group of all time. So I'm biased!

Dire Straits is great and i've loved Metallica since 80's so this gotta be horrible.

I didn't think much of this cover. A good band but they didn't make it for me.

I love Metallica and they did great covers like Turn the page and Whiskey in the jar, but this.... No... Just no!

Its a truly terrible cover which in no way hit what the song is about.
