Three world titles, decades in the game, involved still in pro darts and massively changed the popularity of the game in North America to the point that darts is huge here now. Even Gary Anderson mentioned that the world tour should come to Canada. John also beat Taylor at the height of his "power" and was world #1 for a while in 2003.
Legend of the game. Three world titles across both factions in a Taylor era and still providing excellent insight from the pundit/commentary box, travelling back and forth from Canada to the UK. Still plays in the local top league here in Durham. Lives and breathes darts.

Very interesting discussion. And difficult to argue against! For me personally the glaring omission is Dennis Priestley. I’d have him instead of Wade. Easier to look at titles won now as there are more to play for. I also had Part 10th & Bob 11th simply based on JPs place in the history books (first none UK World Champ & first to win in three venues).
The most names are the same as mine. Only a Bob Anderson isn’t ranked that high by me. John Part deserved it more in my opinion. Winning 3 world titles and two in the PDC. His last one with Taylor, RvB and Wade as the top 3 seeds who all featured this list. Then you are a great player who deserves to be in the top 10.
I actually thought they were talking about Gary Anderson instead of Bob Anderson. Bob did have those 3 Masters titles in a row and the world championship in 88. I still think Gary played tougher competition and was very successful against much tougher groups top to bottom. As Chris says would player A beat player B maybe in both their primes? I think Gary wins it.

It's all subjective, Jim Pike was considered the Phil Taylor of his day. The same goes for darts popularity. Technology has made access much easier but darts was extremely popular during the 30s, 40s, and as captain of the news of the world champion darts team who did exhibition matches for charity during the 39, 40s gathered more money for the red cross and other charities than any other sport at the time. Exhibition matches were performed in front of crowds of 17000. So when discussing who was the greatest, it should be noted that in 20 or 30 years time, just like the greats of bygone times all these listed could be as forgotten as the greats of 80 years ago. That said, they were, and are, all great, in my opinion.
I'm not sure social media would have been very good for James Wade if it had been a thing in his youth, given his mental condition and such. Glad to hear him getting some deserved credit, though!
I wouldn't have Lewis up there on impact or longevity, but his natural ability, like Gary is top drawer. Pre darts being as popular, Alun Evans was a heck of a player, and i always had a soft spot for the Limestone Cowboy. As for great to watch, Barney so nice to watch when playing well, and i put Hankey in that bracket as well.
I think most people are already accepting that Luke Littler is a shoe-in to gatecrash that top 5. John Lowe, John Part .... just two who are certainly in 5-10 👏🏼
We can't really compare the averages of the 80s legends to today due to the thickness of the wires, staples and bounce-outs. Lowe, Anderson and Bristow would certainly be amongst the very best, possibly Rees. Littler should become the GOAT with potentially a 35 year career ahead of him.
Aye Jocky Wilson won in biggest then final in Darts on English soil V the very best England could offer in 1982 Jocky won v Lowe and again in 1989 V Bristow and often in other finals inc semis quarters in better days in Darts . As for dart boards then and now much better boards today as u said without fat rounded trebles and doubles and bullseyes where bounce outs were normal ..I think also darts are better today with better gripping etc ..

Phil Taylor is quite obviously number one. Some people tend to say that prime MvG was a better player which is also not true though. Taylor's best seasonal average in 2009 (almost 105 throughout the entire season!) is better than MvG's best ever year in 2017 (103 yearly average). It is just that most fans weren't watching darts back then or already forgot what a beast Phil was.
how was 2017 mvg the best mvg? i wouldve said 2016 easily. Won every single major except for the worlds that year, but did it at the end of 2016 in the 17 world champs
I think it’s more that with the pace he threw that prime MVG could rip off a 5-0 mini session in 7/8 minutes and give huge momentum surges in a way that even the sustained excellence of Taylor didn’t do.
As someone who grew up watching darts in the 80s, I always try to find a way to fit Bob Anderson and Jocky Wilson (I am Scottish) into my own top 10, but I struggle. I'm delighted to see Chris Mason find a way to sneak the LImestone Cowboy into his top 10.

To me, the only player that could crack the top 5 is John Lowe. Doesn't his major wins stack up well against Gary Anderson's? To this day... John Lowe is STILL my favorite player of all time. I remember Bristow, Lowe Priestly and Bob Anderson in their primes... and I would replace Bob Anderson with John Part.

Wolfie was my favourite player down the years, didn't bother me that he didn't switch. He had unbelievable consistency from about 2005 to 2011 but Barney destroyed him in a final and semi final. It wasn't til Barney left before he won his three worlds and three masters. That would be main reason I can't sneak him into top ten
Not in the list because he wanted to stay a big fish in a small pond and knew he wouldn’t stand a chance against the very best in the PDC, hence Adams won 3 pub championships & played with pub players in the BDO
I think Wolfie staying with the BDO all those years puts him down the list. He was very good in the BDO but he knew he couldn't hang with the top guys and stayed in his own lane. He did do well there though, but I don't think he had a game that rivaled the top 10 consistently.

1974 i began anyhow what i think below V You have to look at Dartboards back them days i so recall and have played Jocky in 1978 in a bar for some £s. As well as practiced with the guy before a county match , this both us in a lounge bar in Scotland way back as well as he came sat with myself and company after asking me at the bar where seated this was in 1979 at Wembley conference centre Ye some fun times with Jocky i had . But in comparison to todays boards back then with the fat rounded wires and when bounce outs were the norm and slight smaller trebles back then because of them fat rounded wiring Also darts today are so much better with grips on them etc so for me below u have to take all that into account so for me below v. 1/ Jocky Wilson a wee Scots guy who went onto English soil and won the biggest at the time tournament twice on English soil THIS with winning both finals he was in V Englands best V John Lowe in 1982 and V Eric Bristow in 1989 respectively . 2/ Eric Bristow 3/ John Lowe 4/ Mike Gregory a guy whom for me is the best player not to win the biggy and underrated .

You could say prize money is the blocker for players breaking Phils record these days. Don't have to win half as many titles these days to earn the equivalent to his long career. He had to keep on winning to make a decent living out of it really. But you could argue that motivation should have made his field just as strong too. Taylor was just a beast and one of a kind really. Had to be the GOAT. I think if he was in his 20's of 30's during this era you wouldn't see him dip the way MvG has.
Honorable Mention: Fallon Sherrock. She's elevated the status of women's darts more than anybody. As for the top ten, I got interested in darts watching Wade's finishing and listening to Part's commentary. Nobody else has had a greater impression on me, regardless of their records.

John Lowe in the top 5 for me instead of RVB, and Bristow still ahead of MVG in second. Barney won only one world title with Taylor in the field and not too much more achieved in the PDC. You could say prize money is the blocker for players breaking Phils record these days. Don't have to win half as many titles these days to earn the equivalent to his long career. He had to keep on winning to make a decent living out of it really. But you could argue that motivation should have made his field just as strong too. Taylor was just a beast and one of a kind really. Had to be the GOAT. I think if he was in his 20's of 30's during this era you wouldn't see him dip the way MvG has.
Where would Alan Evans rate? Probably at his best pre TV but, ask anyone who knew him, or saw him play in money games. Phenomenal.

Honorable Mention: Fallon Sherrock. She's elevated the status of women's darts more than anybody. As for the top ten, I got interested in darts watching Wade's finishing and listening to Part's commentary. Nobody else has had a greater impression on me, regardless of their records.

He's done all three. Yes he's served his time (not enough in my opinion) but he shouldn't be in a prominent and/or a highly visible presence on TV or other forms of media. It's almost as if he's being rewarded for his scumbaggery.

For a man who has struggled with being bipolar and depression, his ability to nail hot birds is second to none.
John Lowe in the top 5 for me instead of RVB, and Bristow still ahead of MVG in second.
Barney won only one world title with Taylor in the field and not too much more achieved in the PDC. Enough to make top 10 but not top 5. Rounding out the top 10 I'd have the double world champions Part, Priestley, Wright and Lewis in no particular order.

He never won anything until all of the world’s best went to the PDC, and Adams knew he would get destroyed if he ever made the switch and though I would be better for him playing against pub players at Lakeside Pub Championship.
It's van Gerwen at number 1 for me. I don't believe Taylor would have dominated as long as van Gerwen did in this field. Different times.
