    Rania is cheated by smugglers, teargassed and beaten at the Macedonian border. She risks drowning in the Mediterranean, travelling in a boat meant to hold 15 people but stuffed with 52. Those with disabilities are carried across raging rivers and muddy fields in their wheelchairs. The documentary is produced and directed by Anders Hammer

    I have to do an English project on a bad refugee situation. I picked Syria because it is a most commonly spoken crisis, but I have only just understood why. Watching this made me burst into tears at several points. I can understand that yes, this is depressing and sad, but that doesn't mean it's too sad to show on the news. The reason why there is still so much of this unhuman savage-like behavior is that the general public isn't made aware of it. I fail to see why this isn't more important than celebrities lives that are constantly posted all over the internet. "A problem shared is a problem halved" is a great quote to use now. The more people know about this, the easier we can make refugees lives become. The way this whole thing is "handled" is disgusting.

She is about your age, she just rolls her eyes when I ever talk about people suffering any where to her an her friends. Makes me feel better that there good kids like you around in this world. I sincerely hope that you will make a difference in the future with your knowledge gained and lessons learned from the miseries of the war torn countries. Do not forget that Europe and America fought many wars before they saw peace times. May be one day that would be possible in Middle East . Africa and Asia. Until than, love and understanding will be needed. May be people would stay back and rebuild their countries and economies with a little bit of help from everywhere. Germany did it after the ww2, so can Syria.

    I cried the whole way during the video. I'm from lebanon and we have happily welcome millions of siryan families. I'm so happy that my country done that for other people. Yes they are people not ghosts so put yourself in their shoes and imagine what they have been through. My whole family and relatives have so many ways that they are helping and supporting the people that go through this. On the news you see 'someone stole chocolate bar's, seriously they never show what goes on in these peoples lives. It's so sad to see this. My county was onces destroyed by war like this so people know how it feels over there and that's why they help the people in need by accepting then into lebanon. I live in Australia and was never taught by any teachers or any government agency or on tv that we should support people in these kind of situations only family taught me. My dad was also in war while he was a baby so he supports as much as he can.

    Oh boy, so many people in the comments say that they don‘t understand why the refugees don‘t stay in the first safe country they go to. So if ya‘ll just think for a minute. If your home country would be destroyed, unsafe and in war - but before all that happened you had a safe life, money, a good education etc. Wouldn’t you also choose the best country to live in after you HAVE to leave your old home because of the war? So I can totally say for myself that if I were in that damn hard situation, I would also choose a country like germany. They may have to live the rest of their life in that new country, so why should‘nt they choose a good one? Everyone with a clear mind should know that NO human beeing EVER would do all that just for fun. They‘re searching for a better live like everyone of us would do in that situation.

    • @PaulaLeonie
      @PaulaLeonie 5 років тому +4

      K Yeah people who break the law are never good to a country no matter if they‘re born there or not. And I also agree with you that there‘s a problem with countries who have to handle too many refugees. But I just wanted to make people like you look trough their eyes, everyone would choose the „best“ country to live in. Because I think some people forget that they are just humans like you an me and everyone would do that in a situation like this.. (I don‘t mean breaking the law or smth like that)

    • @PaulaLeonie
      @PaulaLeonie 5 років тому +6

      K And yeah they are refugees but it‘s clear that they all wan‘t to live in the best country. They‘re not on a vacation, they may have to live the rest of their life in that new country. Wouldn‘t you also choose a country where you think you‘d have the brightest future in? And I think most of the refugees don‘t even know that some countries have a big problem with the amount of refugees they have to handle.

      Yet, you somehow can understand that to tell others they don't and take their side?
      There are plenty of other things to besides fleeing like cowards. If 4 million of the refugees organized they would effectively be their own fighting force and could take either side on.

    My heart is conflicted. As a uni student of economics, i understand receiving refugees isnt beneficial to the country and there is a huge burden that the hosting country must take. But at the same time I feel like we still need to. Couple of years back I volunteered on Mytilini refugee camp in Lesbos island in Greece. My heart was torn to see what kind of ppl were seeking to cross. Inevitably there were crooks, gangsters and criminals who were running away from being sentenced in their home countries. But at the same time there were intelligent, hardworking, educated, good charactered people who were wanting to escape the hostility of the extremists. One African man i met ran for his life and left his country. I asked about how he got here. He was a journalist back at his home country. He ran for his life and became a refugee because he was being hunted down by the government. He publicly posted an article exposing a member of parliament who kept a harem of underage girls that was sold or kidnapped. He exposed the trafficking that was involved and gave extensive witnesses and testimonials. The day after it was publicized he received a phone call. It was one of his colleagues. His colleague told him that everyone in the office was either arrested or shot dead if resisted. So he told him to run for his life, to not meet anyone, only take the necessity and go. He did. He arrived in turkey like many other refugees. There he met with his colleague. This guy asked the colleague if he heard anything about his family. The colleague told him the last time he heard was that this guys mother was taken to prison. The face this man showed as he told me this story was something i will remember for the rest of my life. His eyes were red and he couldnt stop the tears running down his cheeks, yet his face was emotionless and lifeless, his voice was low and monotonous. I asked him why he did what he did and if he knew the danger that was involved. His answer was simple "Someone had to do it. And yes I knew it was dangerous". Then it was meal time and he walked up slowly to the line that was forming infront of the cafeteria.

      But that's simply not a good statement. It's not like it's impossible for religions to be bad. Old germanic religions used human sacrifices, is your "respect N love every religion" a great idea? All you need is this example to show that no, some religions you shouldn't respect.

    Okay man, this is absolutely crazy.... I get the arguments from both sides. I get that we are all human beings who deserve the same chance for a proper life, but the refugees have to be patient. The whole process is slow as it is very difficult to actually check who is coming to Europe. Their lack of respect makes the whole process only more violent and worse for both sides. Europe is loving and cares for all but to enter it all refugees have to respect its laws first. And also refugees are not in the position to choose their final destination country, they plea that they flew from the war, not because of economical interests, so they should stay where they are told to and wait for their final destination country. I dont mean to be hating, but people just try to understand both sides before pussing on EU.

      If they are any more patient then they have been for the past few years, they will die of hunger, disease, and more bombings. If you put yourself in their shoes you will most likely act the same way, when people are desperate they do things out of character.

      I can't agree more with you. I have some of my relatives who escaped Vietnam via boat back then after the Fall of Saigon (1975) and the whole Vietnam fell under communism. The escape route was much more dangerous because it was open sea, you can get caught by Communist border guard (and sent to jail), or raped and/or sold as sex slaves by the pirates operating in that area, finally the boats were also small and could easily sink. Even if they were saved by international boats, they were sent to refugee camps in the neighbouring countries and had to wait several years for a country to accept them. Some of them are lucky and get move on fast, some of them have to wait for a long time, years after years. Now we Vietnamese are all over the globe, well-integrated and contributing to the countries we are living in. Mind you, these refugees can just stay in the refugee camps in Greece, because they are safe there, no war, no mass killings by jihadists. They can just stay there and wait, either moving forward to live in an European country or returning to their when the war has ended. They didn't have to cross border-to-border like that, and why Germany? Because the economy there is good? Sounds more like opportunists to me than actual refugees.

    • @gabrielkakaa111
      @gabrielkakaa111 6 років тому +2

      Problem tho: Today we have over 60 million displaced people, that is an all-time record. Simply waiting might have served you back then, but today, you'd be better off waiting for ur own death than a country to just let you in.

      We get the fact that their doing their job, but she has the right. Plus, it's not just her, it's everyone there. And there is a difference between defending your home and your country. Border- soldiers may do their job by just standing there with guns. But they have absolutley no right, not in a million years, to throw stones and tear gas at these people. In the end of the day, they are still humans, just like us. Some people became unconcious because of this. No one deserves to be treated this way. It's not their fault wars are happening, they're trying to save themselves and they're families' lives. Most people won't understand because thank god, they've never been in a situation like this. The last thing people like you should do, is to throw hate. And her trip was not "easy". There is a difference between travelling for fun, with your family, having food and water, knowing your okay, and having no connection to your family, barely having life supplies, and being okay is the last thing you could think about.

      Germany on the other hand has a lot of resources and a great economy (economy even increased although there are living so many refugees here). Germany can offer a foundation to help the people that are coming.

I was a refugee myself and moved to Canada and respect the countries law, religion and it's kind people but never in my heart would I do such a bad heinous thing causing harm since Canada gave me a safe home. All refugees should mix mingle learn the language and respect the people who are already living in the country when they try to push their own religion this is when the local population pushes back! For example Germany was such a tolerant country after the new year eve sexual assault by refugees cause a seperation and people became harsh. So Yes the local folks have the right to defend their country

When I want to visit home, I fly there via Beirut Airport then continue the trip on land, same on the way back, of-course I can't fly directly because of the sanctions, but that's another subject. You can do that if you have legal documents/visa that allow you to travel. Twisted if you think about it, there are regulations in EU to accept refugees, yet they have to take the long dangerous road to get there.

    It's so weird seeing how many in the comments don't understand the refugees. It really shows how privileged you are.
    The refugees don't settle down in Turkey, Greece, Iran or Italy or any other country they first flee to because 1, a lot of countries say no to immigration, for an example Eastern European countries. 2, they know very well that most of their relatives and other people fleeing have gotten citizenships in Sweden and Germany, hence they'll try to get there because it's the biggest chance of not getting deported. 3, for their own and their children's futures Germany and Sweden are better options because although they might not be able to get a well paying job, their children will always have food in their stomachs, a roof over their head, clothes on their bodies and free education which might lead to a brighter future for them. To me it's quite reasonable. Have any of you tried putting yourself in their shoes? It seems to be so easy for everyone to shittalk them but what would happen if it was reversed positions? Wouldn't you want to flee to a safe country and build a good future for you and your kids? Idk about you but that seems perfectly legit to me.
