  • The Boy Who Started the Syrian War
We tell the story of Mouawiya Syasneh, the boy whose anti-Assad graffiti lit the spark that engulfed Syria.
Mouawiya Syasneh was just 14 when he sprayed anti-government slogans on his school wall in Deraa, Syria. It was February 2011, and he could never have imagined that such a minor act would spark a full-blown civil war.
More than half a million people have been killed in Syria since the start of the war. Mouawiya's home city has been ravaged by street fighting, shelling and barrel bombing. The war has left scars that may never heal.
Now a young man, fighting on the frontline for the Free Syrian Army, Mouawiya admits that had he known what the consequences of his actions would be, he would never have taunted the country's president, Bashar al-Assad.
His life has been transformed by that adolescent prank. He has lost friends and relatives, including his father. And Syria has been changed forever.
The Boy Who Started the Syrian Civil War offers a glimpse into life in Deraa since the start of the conflict.
We meet Syrians trying to lead normal lives amid the chaos as well as those who have taken up arms against Assad's forces.

I'm almost 14, and I'm born in Syria, Aleppo. I was 4 when the war started, alhamdulilah me and my family escaped out of the country alive. But unfortunately, my brother was bombed at the age of 14 close to death, but he is alive and we're living in the best condition now. Alhamdulilah!

The boy should not be blamed. If he didn't paint that graffiti, something else would happen to trigger the conflict. Because we all know who WANTED that war to be there anyway.

50,000 kids killed? Beyond imagination what grown-ups can do for their benefits. A real dark side of human nature.

That woman should be given an award, that's true bravery and kindness looking after the kids and trying to teach them a life outside of all of it

It's heartbreaking to see those kids in the classroom. They still have smiles on their faces despite what is happening

Unless this boy owns an Oil company or is the King of Saudi Arabia he didnt start the war. He might have been the catalyst

When you realize that assad's family wealth estimated at 122 billion dollars while Syria's budget for 2011 ($ 16.3 billion dollar only) you will know the cause of the revolution.

I like the little glimmer of hope in that loving teacher's eyes in the midst of all despair and darkness brought by the war. Bless her, the children and all the people of Syria. All shall be well.
