The Harrowing Personal Stories of Syrian Refugees, in Their Own Words

  • A documentary film crew travels to Greece to capture the perspectives of new arrivals.
    “I don’t think the human mind is able to understand the suffering we’ve experienced,” says a man in Matthew K. Firpo’s short documentary, Refuge. Filmed on location in 2016 in four different refugee camps across Greece-outside Athens and on the islands of Lesvos and Leros-the film allows victims of the Syrian Civil War to share their experiences. One man describes how his sewing factory was completely destroyed, leaving him penniless and starving. Another man says he was jailed and tortured for attempting to distribute food; his brother was killed shortly thereafter. Some lost everyone and everything. “Wherever I went in Syria, I saw the injured and the dead,” yet another refugee recounts. For Firpo and his production team, Refuge was a passion project fueled by “wanting to know more about the people living these headlines. I wanted to know more about their stories, about what they had lost, what they had left behind, and where they hoped their lives were headed. While news coverage focused on the problem, it often forgot about the human being.”

      @NewtNukem Where there is poverty corruption thrives, it's not the people's fault. They don't have power to change anything, the government does. And they have no choice but to flee, I bet if your neighbourhood was being bombed and you were living in absolute poverty, you'd leave too. But I do not expect you to have that level of understanding or empathy

    • @fionaautumn
      @fionaautumn 3 роки тому +4

      @NewtNukem They do not have that much power, it's not as easy as you think. How about you change your country right now since you are also part of the people, good luck and get back to me when you've succeeded. Of course it would be good if those countries also changed and there was less poverty and war, but it depends on the government and the involvement of other countries. As of now the people have no choice but to flee. And as of the other things you've said that's putting your own words into other people's mouth, that's pure speculation and not even worth discussing.

    I have a story to tell I had some toys and a little Syrian boy came up to me. And asked for a tinker bell doll. He said do you want money for the doll. I said No you can have it for free. The little boy smiled and he said Than You. I cried so much. It may only be a toy but it is a blessing from God to bring a smile to a refugee child. If only more people would help them this world would be a much better place. God Bless

    The middle-aged lady in black scarf has seen some really difficult times, there's so much wisdom in her words. She wants her daughters to write a book or make a film (not become "doctors") to tell the world the horrors of what they have witnessed. It seems as if she has consciously made a choice to banish wishful thinking. She is living her reality for what it really is.

    This seems to me to be a powerful brief documentary even now, a year or so on. Personally, I’m not sure religious extremism is the root issue or that religion in general is the fundamental debate or the solution. It seems more of a conflict involving cultural diversity and a lack of mutual understanding in that regard. I’d love to participate in education on cultural diversity for the promotion of a world, not just of mere tolerance but rather of mutual understanding, appreciation and benefit on a globally inclusive human scale.
