been doing 22hs fasting lately and as a vegan it's easy to get the nutrition you need tbh. eat whatever you feel is healthy for you, healthy varied meals with good carbs and fats and keep protein high. take your multivitamin supplements. I've been going at it for 25 days and I've managed to lose a lot of fat while actually gaining some muscle and strength working out a few times a week.
Steve Jobs observed a vegan/fruitarian diet and fasting, and died of pancreatic cancer... Ashton Kutcher followed Steve Jobs' diet regimen for purposes of method acting and was hospitalized because of his pancreas... Vegans will immediately get defensive about this and tell you it's just coincidence or that "he didn't do it right," but the fact is that the body tries its best to maintain balance and compensates for what you do to it; when you eat a high carbohydrate diet all the time, your fasting insulin level will naturally increase in anticipation for the blood sugar, and on the other hand your fasting insulin levels will naturally decrease if you follow a ketogenic diet or when you intermitting/extended fast. However, when you fast and then break your fast with all carbohydrates, which is the primary macronutrient in vegan diets whether you're a "fruitarian" or not, your pancreas has tremendous stress because it goes from periods of very little insulin demand to a sudden massive demand, and because it doesn't just turn on and off like a light switch the pancreas has to work extra hard to perform its insulin and enzyme production functions the result of this is damage to the cells of the pancreas, and those damaged cells can become cancerous. Think of it like working at a restaurant and there are no customers, so the managers send a lot of the kitchen staff and servers home, then suddenly a big bus full of customers shows up all at once and absolutely swamps the remaining crew that are there and they are dramatically understaffed to handle the workload, and with the amount of stress it puts on them and even though they work as hard as possible, they just can't keep up and some people can't handle it and just walk out and quit. This is in essence what happens to the cells of your pancreas. When you break a fast of any duration, you always want to do it with foods that are very low glycemic, very low insulinogenic foods to minimize the shock to the pancreas, and that's much more difficult to do on a vegan diet than an animal based low carb ketogenic/carnivore diet.
pancriatic cancer usually takes people out very swiftly, he lived with it for many years past the usual expectancy. he actually died from an operation not the cancer.
mich jills well here's a little intro to oncology lesson for you because everything you said is untrue: there are two main types of Pancreatic Cancer, the vast majority are adenocarcinomas, and adenocarcinoma has about a 6 month survival prognosis... if it's diagnosed at stage 4. People diagnosed with early stage pancreatic adenocarcinoma have a 34% shot at living longer than 5 years... However, Steve Jobs did NOT have adenocarcinoma. He had a much rarer, Neuroendocrine tumor, which is often asymptomatic in early stages, sometimes for years, and has a much higher 5 year survival rate than adenocarcinoma, 55% in early stage and 45% in the later stages... So your assessment is wrong. Also Steve Jobs died in his home, not in a hospital, not during a surgery or immediately following a surgery. So literally everything you've said is misinformation you've gotten somewhere by mistake, or it's just a lie. not sure which is the case, and I don't really care, but I'm happy to clarify either way.
lesson 2: Pancreatic Neuroendocrine tumors affect the cells that produce hormones. The EXACT type of neuroendocrine tumor Steve Jobs was diagnosed with was an Insulinoma... cancerous beta cells... which is exactly the type of cancer you would get from the damage caused by his diet which I described above... www.mskcc.org/cancer-care/types/gastrointestinal-neuroendocrine/pancreatic-neuroendocrine-islet-cell-tumors
De Lauer recommends breking an extended fast with rice cakes. Surely these are high GI & spike insulin? Are you saying his advice is wrong? (not being sarcy, genuine question). I do take issue with your combining the words 'fruitarian/vegan' though. Fruitarian diet is stupid. Vegan diet can quite easily be high protein, low carb too. Plant based eating is not all high carb by any stretch. Even vegan keto is doable. Harder, yes, but doable.
So you provide 2 people who happened to develop cancer and pin it completely on a diet, despite cancer being a multi factor disease. Cool science, bro.
I have been vegan for almost four years, but just recently started intermittent fasting and carb-cycling while using a cortisol blocker. I am really feeling awesome and beginning to lean out. Great advice as always Thomas.
Thomas! I have been watching your videos for at least a year... I am new to the vegan world, and coming from the Keto intermittent fasting world. I’m so glad to see you covering vegan info. And would love to see more vegan videos in general! Thanks for this
I should add, I’m going the starch solution route, so the opposite end of the spectrum of Keto. I just think you are more unbiased than most and would like to see you cover more vegan content and from maybe a lower fat high carb perspective!!
Hi Thomas, thanks for the fasting information, got a guy in the gym that told me about you, you certainly known your stuff and iv watched almost all your videos, I am vegan and have been for 3 years, lost a lot of weight plus inflammation in my colon, I don’t however appreciate your comments on vegans and not being able to fast for long periods, I do, 20-22 hrs and there are many high lean protein and nutritional food alternatives that avoid damaging the planet and murdering innocent animals. You should watch joe rogan pod cast with James wilks from the game changer, you have a lot of people who look up to you and listen so I hope you take this and uplift also the vegan and plant base people by looking into the positives that come from that living. Even ufc rashed evans did a podcast with joe about being vegan and intermittent fasting. Love your videos keep up the good work!!

So I'm vegan and I have watched this video, specifically the 9:45 mark about breaking the fast, several times. And while I appreciate you making a video specifically for vegans and vegetarians, I still wasn't sure exactly what to eat. Mainly because you mentioned a lot of different foods, but not things that necessarily go together. Like spinach, dark chocolate, Hemp seeds, hemp milk were some of the foods mentioned. But I'm like should I make a smoothie out of this? Should I just eat a hand full of Hemp seeds? What do I do with these chickpeas, just cook them and eat them alone? Because once you get into a recipe with chickpeas, now I'm not sure if its good for a fast due to the other ingredients. I guess I was hoping for an actual example of what to eat to break the fast. Maybe I thinking about this too hard. I always feel like I'm breaking my fast wrong. Even though Hemp milk was mentioned, it has a good amount of sugar in it. Can I still drink it or wait until the larger meal? Can someone give me specific examples of things they actually eat to break their fast? I just want to get this right.
well my opinion I don't care much about the fiber intake on my last meal so I'd recommend these two example meals that are high protein, moderate fat and low carb: some tofu, season it well and pan fry it, accompany it with some boiled broccoli and carrots seitan stir fry, fry up the seitan a little bit in olive oil with garlic before adding some cauliflower, bell pepper, cherry tomatoes and mushrooms
In another video for 48hour fasting he mentioned vegans breaking a fast with plain pure pea protein before bed, and resuming your normal diet the next day.
Don’t think too much about it honestly. I feel like he exaggerates. Make it something that is will be healthy n easy for you to stick to in the long run and you’ll be fine :)
Interesting take on not taking carbs and fats together. I've seen other research that shows that the value of having a mix of macros will allow protein and fat to blunt the insulin spikes from Carbs, as does light exercise. So, in that sense, having some healthy fats (not a lot) and going for a good walk after eating a higher carb (still low GI) will greatly reduce the impact of the glucose. You might actually be doing a disservice to yourself by not mixing some of the macros with the carb meals. I do like the idea of keeping the carbs to the middle of the eating window and not at the fasting break or before you start again.
That explains why I get better results when I do IF end of the day instead of during the morning, even though is easier to skip breakfast. When I do IF in the morning I gain weight and it doesn’t do much for me, besides feeling better. But IF in the afternoon and evening is pretty hard for me but I get better results. Awesome video...thank you for sharing. It’s a pity that I did not notice it when you first shared it.
Quick tips summary: - break your fast lean. - keep youre carbs and fats seperate - fats before you start youre fast - omega3s with every meal - take some extra minerals: Magnesium, potasium (ok to take during fast. - keep nuts to a minimum, better nut choices: macademia, pecan and walnuts. - keep soy to a minimum as well. (Someone else might have made a similar comment, but doing so as well for the sake of my own easy access.)
Yay Thomas, I was IF vegan for 2.5 yrs and srarted feeling not great when a long stressful period in my life caused me to be vegan food disorganised and kept eating loads if easy carbs, but also i did end up with mild IBS too and food organisation became even harder. I am generally on point and educated etc but life happenscand even the best of us fall off our ideal lifestyle. l felt so unwell so reverted back to pastured eggs a couple times a week and a wild caught salmon fillet or canned sardines once a fortnight and it helped. I followed yoy for education evem when vegan so 2 weeks ago I went keto (while 16:8 IF still) and added a little grassfed butter or ghee daily and graasfed beef fillet once a week. Feel great but would love to go vegan again and keto (for my gut as full vegan wrecks it) Would appreciate and love if you could a vid on a weekly meal plan vegan keto. Thanks, you're info is invaluable in the meat world and now vegan world.
What I have found is SOOOOOOOO vital and effective in increasing the ease and therapeutic effects of a fast is supplementing Lots of omega-3 with your meals. They have completely transformed my health and fasts
Simple break down: fast 16/8 3 days a week, not in a row though, and break your fast with a hemp or pea protein shake. Make sure your last meal of the day is high fat low carb to retain muscle and stay satiated while you’re fasting.
Your videos are always timely. I really wanted to try a Vegetarian diet but I’ve been fasting and doing keto for 11 months (LOVING the results )and wasn’t sure if a vegetarian diet was possible. Thanks, your video was helpful!
I literally watched that and stopped eating meat the same day. I’m still trying to figure out what foods work best for me because I’m gaining weight but I DO NOT want any meat
Thank you thank you. I am a type 1 diabetic who has been asked by my medical team to go off the keto because of some of my blood work. It's been a bit of a mind--++ . They are suggesting plant based but no vegan products per say Your videos help me do my research and this video has totally calmed my mind. Thank you for talking about fasting we have done it all our lives for the high holidays we love that it is being given the place in our health journeys. Thank you thank you
I'm a little confused about the nuts. In the fasting for women video you recommend eating a couple of brazil nuts for thyroid health after your first protein meal. But in this one you say watch out for brazil nuts. So I guess I don't understand the reasoning behind why Vegans/Vegetarians need to avoid these nuts but they are recommended for women in the other fasting video?
Thomas, can you make a video on foods sitting in/wrapped in plastic (if you haven't already...). The microparticles concern me. I have started really being aware that even the healthiest foods are packaged this way. Would love to see a change in the industry and our own shopping behavior. ☺️
Amazing video. I had to favorite this. I am a Vegan does intermittent fasting 3-4 days a week on average. I have broken my fast with cashews and shakes made with cashew milk at times, this new information was good to know ! My fasting period is usually 16-18 hours.

Hi Thomas , you said in another video a while back that it is best to break your fast with a ricecake and then wait about an hour to control the insulin spike. Why didn’t you recommend that here ?
I think that he's putting down vegans + vegetarians. He says that we don't get enough nutrients, vitamins and minerals but legumes have all 9 amino acids
This video just goes to show it doesn't have to be 'vegan vs keto' or 'vegan vs fasting' communities. There is an opportunity to combine different models and find the healthiest diet for you. Thank you for NOT following the other health, keto and fasting bloggers. It's refreshing to have someone approach this topic openly
Keto and Vegan - a very unhealthy combo. It would involve Omega-6 rich nuts/nut/seed butters and other stuff without having DPA/EHA from mutton/beaf/fish/prawns. Apart from that, they would be consuming more of veggies and hence higher intake of anti-nutrients like oxalates.
Vegane can get allot of DHA & EPA from Algae Oil, Flax & Chia. And Vegetables have allot of Omega 3 as well. Actually a perfect ratio. I dont see a big problem with oxalates hence we are not tiny Bugs that the stuff is for. And if you dont have any kidney problems. And even then, you can still eat a biiiiig variety of low oxalate plants
@@l.lalala3455 There is no EPA, DHA in Flax/Chia. The conversion ratio is generally around 5-10% and it decreases further for vegans who have much higher Omega-6 to Omega-3 ratio than meat eaters.
@@l.lalala3455 What you assimilate and what you absorb makes all the difference. So the content of Omega 3 is irrelevant. It is well known that animal sources are more bio-available than the plant kingdom. Just for starters.
Thx for all videos u make they make a lot sense that is. Why I'm always support u thomas delauer because the staff u talk is real and it make sense if u put it that way with the samples thx again
I learned from one of your videos that a fast-breaking meal should not have carbohydrates and fat together to avoid fat storage. With that in mind, is it a good idea to break the fast with oats in boiled zero-fat milk?
Very information!! One critique is that no one study proves anything. So saying “the journal a pediatrics proved” that vegans are deficient in omega-3s is misleading. Vegans can be, and a portion are deficient in omega-3s. However, that’s because they don’t get enough, not because they can’t get enough on a plant-based diet.
Why wouldn't you promote veganism for all the reasons that speak for it then? A lot of people are easier to get around for health, the environment or religious reasons. No offense, it just negs me that the ethical vegans often get on the balls of the health vegans.
while i understand that you can get nutrition packed meal with veganism, most vegans dont bother with cooking a balanced meal. a lot of them just cook tofu and dip with rice then thats it.
Wow! You provided so much more information than I expected. I now know why I've had issues with collagen production. I really want to know how to achieve autophagy on a vegan diet in which I avoid fats until evening (which I am so happy is in line with what I was already doing to give my liver a break during the day). I am excited to watch your other videos. And I love Bhu bars. They just started carrying them at a local store that is closer to me (on Maui). I was unaware of their other products. So, I will check those, too. Mahalos!
Thank you for this! However I feel confused, I believe you had recommended females eat Brazil nuts when intermittent fasting. I hear in this video that you don’t recommend eating them on fasting days. Can you or anyone else reading help clarify?
Br0ski0fTheWeek that’s because he says you won’t get enough calories during fasting days eating only 4 hours.. but again says if you are experienced you can always manage your higher calories intake during eating window like I do... if you stick to whole food plant based diet really you get all micro and macro nutrients... hence the experienced vegan comes into play.. hope it helps... I am an experienced long term vegan and I life weights too... I lost significant fat and able to keep it out and build muscle too
Thank you for this video. I thought it was me or just doing something wrong. I switch to the vegan lifestyle a month ago for health reasons. Prior to that I was doing 16:8 and 20:4 daily. Once I switch to vegan it has because extremely hard but now I know what I have to do. Thank you for all the information you provide your a life changer!!!
This is really helpful. I've been vegan for decades (since before it was cool, haha). Really appreciate the part especially where you talk about breaking a fast. God bless.
basically ethiopian orthodox fasting is great for your health and well-being.This practice was there for more 3000 years. It is more a life style for the Ethiopians. Alexandre Senator yup same here perfectly fine eating tempeh and soy milk everyday and doing very well...
Was wondering that as well, seems like he has some misconception about vegans :o
While i'm at it, i recommand "the game changers" documentary on netflix which talks about the performance/atheltic aspect of veganism, very interesting :)
I am a plant-based I-faster, and I love it! this video was pretty good, but I will say that the "concerns" he had because "we already have trouble getting the nutrition that we need" is not the case, as long as you are eating a robust, balanced diet of whole plant based foods. we are just fine! : ) no worries. we are getting everything we need.
I am a vegetarian and I had no clue why I wasn't losing weight with intermittent fasting but now I do- my carbs were high in my last meal! Thank you for all your advice. I love your videos. Please offer advice as to three healthy meals for vegetarians that don't do shakes at all.
Been waiting for this for a while.
Wait no more
I'm not a vegan but I need to cut back on meat due to my bloodwork coming back not so great (due to genetic kidney disease). Thank you for posting these videos in a non-judgmental, very informative way.
Thanks for watching!
I dropped meat and my kidney function went back to normal.
Thanks for another great video for vegetarians/vegans. This was super informative. Need to listen again and take notes!!
Thanks for watching
been doing 22hs fasting lately and as a vegan it's easy to get the nutrition you need tbh. eat whatever you feel is healthy for you, healthy varied meals with good carbs and fats and keep protein high. take your multivitamin supplements. I've been going at it for 25 days and I've managed to lose a lot of fat while actually gaining some muscle and strength working out a few times a week.
finally! been waiting for this one.

Would you recommend oats when breaking a fast?
When you break a fast of any duration, you always want to do it with foods that are very low glycemic, very low insulinogenic foods to minimize the shock to the pancreas, and that's much more difficult to do on a vegan diet than an animal based low carb ketogenic/carnivore diet.
pancriatic cancer usually takes people out very swiftly, he lived with it for many years past the usual expectancy. he actually died from an operation not the cancer.
mich jills well here's a little intro to oncology lesson for you because everything you said is untrue:
there are two main types of Pancreatic Cancer, the vast majority are adenocarcinomas, and adenocarcinoma has about a 6 month survival prognosis... if it's diagnosed at stage 4.
So literally everything you've said is misinformation you've gotten somewhere by mistake, or it's just a lie. not sure which is the case, and I don't really care, but I'm happy to clarify either way.
lesson 2:
Pancreatic Neuroendocrine tumors affect the cells that produce hormones.
Thanks Mr. Handsome ❤️❤️❤️ I have been waiting for this video for long long time....
Glad to get it to you!
Me too 😉
I have been vegan for almost four years, but just recently started intermittent fasting and carb-cycling while using a cortisol blocker.
@@caroline4489 how’s it going for you? Do you watch Plantiful Kiki? Or Bandts on Plants 🌱
a meal break list of foods would be informative. Anyone got anything?
Good things to break a fast as a veggy
I need as well
Hi Thomas, thanks for the fasting information, got a guy in the gym that told me about you, you certainly known your stuff and iv watched almost all your videos, I am vegan and have been for 3 years, lost a lot of weight plus inflammation in my colon, I don’t however appreciate your comments on vegans and not being able to fast for long periods, I do, 20-22 hrs and there are many high lean protein and nutritional food alternatives that avoid damaging the planet and murdering innocent animals.

Been watching the last 2 vegan videos so excited!!! This is awesome I am so happy!!! Thank you
Would love to know how to boost my key tones and keep them going while being vegan. Please!
I’m here because I asked google how to break a fast plant based. Hopefully you’ll get an answer soon here
well my opinion I don't care much about the fiber intake on my last meal so I'd recommend these two example meals that are high protein, moderate fat and low carb:
some tofu, season it well and pan fry it, accompany it with some boiled broccoli and carrots
seitan stir fry, fry up the seitan a little bit in olive oil with garlic before adding some cauliflower, bell pepper, cherry tomatoes and mushrooms
How about a Teff or buckwheat porridge with a small handful of berries?
Interesting take on not taking carbs and fats together. I've seen other research that shows that the value of having a mix of macros will allow protein and fat to blunt the insulin spikes from Carbs, as does light exercise. So, in that sense, having some healthy fats (not a lot) and going for a good walk after eating a higher carb (still low GI) will greatly reduce the impact of the glucose. You might actually be doing a disservice to yourself by not mixing some of the macros with the carb meals. I do like the idea of keeping the carbs to the middle of the eating window and not at the fasting break or before you start again.
Fasting doesn’t dictate how many calories you eat. You can perfectly eat in surplus in a fast..
Quick tips summary:
- break your fast lean.
- keep youre carbs and fats seperate
- fats before you start youre fast
- omega3s with every meal
- take some extra minerals: Magnesium, potasium (ok to take during fast.
All this information feels overwhelming and too complicated to be practical.
Exactly ! It's realy overwhelming I can't find time to learn and remember all that :(
Simple break down: fast 16/8 3 days a week, not in a row though, and break your fast with a hemp or pea protein shake. Make sure your last meal of the day is high fat low carb to retain muscle and stay satiated while you’re fasting.
@@ghazalaldakr4508 It was a lot of info, so I wrote it down. Once it's done a few times it will sink in.
Your leptin explanation should help immensely, as I'm currently ending my day wrongly and can fairly easily shift that; thank you!
Your videos are always timely. I really wanted to try a Vegetarian diet but I’ve been fasting and doing keto for 11 months (LOVING the results )and wasn’t sure if a vegetarian diet was possible. Thanks, your video was helpful!
I watched ‘what the health’ and now I’m vegan
Thank you so much for making a difference! I also went vegan after watching it about a year ago. Genuinely the best decision of my life.
I literally watched that and stopped eating meat the same day. I’m still trying to figure out what foods work best for me because I’m gaining weight but I DO NOT want any meat
@@yourmirrorsreflection For the first few weeks, bloating is normal.
Check out "The Game Changers", very inspiring as well.
Awesome 👍🏼
Thank you thank you. I am a type 1 diabetic who has been asked by my medical team to go off the keto because of some of my blood work. It's been a bit of a mind--++ . They are suggesting plant based but no vegan products per say
Your videos help me do my research and this video has totally calmed my mind.
I had this same question and ofcourse we will not get an answer 😐
Thomas, can you make a video on foods sitting in/wrapped in plastic (if you haven't already...). The microparticles concern me. I have started really being aware that even the healthiest foods are packaged this way. Would love to see a change in the industry and our own shopping behavior. ☺️
Amazing video. I had to favorite this.
I am a Vegan does intermittent fasting 3-4 days a week on average.
I have broken my fast with cashews and shakes made with cashew milk at times, this new information was good to know !
My fasting period is usually 16-18 hours.

Why don't you recommend fasting for over 20 hours when vegetarian or vegan?

Hi Thomas , you said in another video a while back that it is best to break your fast with a ricecake and then wait about an hour to control the insulin spike. Why didn’t you recommend that here ?
I think that he's putting down vegans + vegetarians. He says that we don't get enough nutrients, vitamins and minerals but legumes have all 9 amino acids
I agree
Yes its that simple... Have you not listened to this man at all? Its so complicated and goes waaaayyy beyond amino acids.
I ❤ how your team ....makes videos with good info for everyone💯.... vegan keto Feminist...doesnt even matter 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Thanks! The goal is to help any and everyone no matter their diet(s) etc
How did I miss this notification!?!?! Thanks Thomas! 👍
Glad you did this video.
@@l.lalala3455
What you assimilate and what you absorb makes all the difference.
Thomas thank you so much for the video on IF for vegetarians. It sums up everything very nicely !
Much appreciated
Ethics is why I am vegan.
Why wouldn't you promote veganism for all the reasons that speak for it then? A lot of people are easier to get around for health, the environment or religious reasons.
No offense, it just negs me that the ethical vegans often get on the balls of the health vegans.
Move IF Vegan videos like this please! Very helpful! To rewatch again. Info packed! Is there a cheat sheet of printout or this. Oh wow!
I don't understand why you recommend that vegetarian/vegan don't do longer than 20 hours fast?
while i understand that you can get nutrition packed meal with veganism, most vegans dont bother with cooking a balanced meal. a lot of them just cook tofu and dip with rice then thats it.
@@aubreyravenl You're assuming a lot-
Mahalos!
Took down some awesome notes, thanks a lot!
Appreciate your knowledge my man!! Cheers!
Thank you. This was very informative.
Thanks for watching!
Thank you for this! However I feel confused, I believe you had recommended females eat Brazil nuts when intermittent fasting. I hear in this video that you don’t recommend eating them on fasting days. Can you or anyone else reading help clarify?
He said don’t break your fast with nuts. Not that you can’t eat them at all
I’m trying very hard to find any information on protocol on breaking a fast whilst on vegan keto. Can ya help me out here?
Man, been breaking my fast with almonds/almond butter for weeks :/ didn’t know it was harmful
I am a vegetarian doing OMAD, can someone explain to me why Thomas doesn't recommend going over a 20 hours for a fast as a vegetarian?
Br0ski0fTheWeek that’s because he says you won’t get enough calories during fasting days eating only 4 hours.. but again says if you are experienced you can always manage your higher calories intake during eating window like I do... if you stick to whole food plant based diet really you get all micro and macro nutrients... hence the experienced vegan comes into play.. hope it helps... I am an experienced long term vegan and I life weights too... I lost significant fat and able to keep it out and build muscle too
I've done 24 hour dry fasts with great benefits as a vegan, it's usually on a weekend where I can rest up and don't need extra calories.
Your channel rocks buddy🤘
🤘🏻
I agree with keeping fats high because I can fast longer compared to high carb, and I'm mainly a high carb vegan, unless I'm fasting.
Thanks Thomas! Blessings to you and your family! 🙌🏾😇🎁🎈
Thank you for this video. I thought it was me or just doing something wrong. I switch to the vegan lifestyle a month ago for health reasons. Prior to that I was doing 16:8 and 20:4 daily.
