I think the important thing to note is that Zoltraak isn't obsolete. It just became the new standard that mages work with now. It shows how powerful Qual's spell was.

The Qual scene is what sopd me on this anime. It shows that it is a living, growing world of magic, one of progress, not one stuck in the past focused on hidden magics.

Beneath the soil under Qual there is water which, after Frieren killing thr demon, is exposed and it reflects the sky. Himmel in German means sky, so the allusion is that he was right that Frieren will return to kill the demon. Visual story telling masterclass.
For the longest time, I was always wondering what I saw. I thought they were battling at the bottom of a hill and she blew a hole through it; but that made no sense of why the sky was there. A pond being behind/ beneath Qual makes absolute sense
Every time I see Fern I can't help imagining her in a cowboy hat. She gives off gunslinger vibes.
The music on the background is called Evolution of magic by Evan Call. Quite fitting.
Frieren's Zoltraak is white while Qual's is black. I think you are quite ahead in Patreon so you know the reason why. Also passage of time and how it reflects everything is major theme in this show.
Man, just the weight of the words "in just a few years, the spell was incorporated" because those were years where Qual wasn't going around blasting human mages.
