1. Love who you are
He came to prominence in the 1950s as a jazz arranger and conductor.
2. Work and study
In 1964, he was promoted to vice-president of Mercury Records, becoming the first African American to hold this executive position.
3. Put your soul into the music
He became the first African Americans to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song, their "The Eyes of Love".

I've had guitar students begin at 50 ... 60 ... 70 years old and older. Many have gone on to do amazing things! ; ) No ... they're not Michael Jackson... but guess what ... that wasn't their goal. One wanted to accompany at her place of worship (did it), one wanted to perform at small clubs and wineries (did it), one wanted to play guitar for his grandkids while they sat around a fire pit and made s'mores! (Done!).
I would add ... distance yourself from negative people--- naysayers who say 'you can't do that'! (Like one of the commenters in this thread). Negativity is poison that just might rob you of what could have been. You'll know who they are pretty quickly-- they hide behind comments like, "Oh ... I'm NOT negative ... I'm a realist!" These are often people sitting on the sidelines secretly wishing they played guitar (or other goal). One final story. When I started working in a mar Yes ... you can start any age.
according to wikipedia, Grandma Moses started painting "in earnest'' at age 78. she lived past 100, and hung out w/ JFK (who's personal regard for her is undeniable, if you read his eulogy for her).

There were two rules for me. Master your craft, which means to me study ,be prepared,and
never give up. I learned and applied one of Mr. Jones' Proofs in college ,not realizing until some 30 years later. A Quincy quote- "When People say "you can't do that, I say "oh really"? My TV instructor could not believe that I secured permission to bring a television college crew, document and record on a major Film and Television union lot...He said, "Oh Eric , you'll never be able to get "us" on the Universal Studios property.. I did, and produced a documentary on Animals and how they are trained (Ray Berwick) on make-up (John Goodwin and) stunts(Rick Baker.."Reverse Celluloid(1975) Then "in the 90's I met Mr. Jones several times... and marketed several QWEST projects at WEA New York.(full circle) E.
