What nobody ever mentions is he essentially wrote a blues song - but he totally reimagined the genre. He was singing the blues of the entire world.
What an insightful comment -- thank you! It's a blues song, but not a cover or an homage (as most blues songs are today). Charley Paton or Son House would have loved Sign O' the Times -- it's just good, creative, innovative blues songwriting.
I have to admit that Suzanne Rogers explaining how he recorded his vocals on a very basic track and then the guitar to answer and emphasize, made me realize how much this is truly a blues song. The chords in this song, though stretched out, should give that away, obviously. The use of synts and samplers, and overall wild arrangements (in other songs) may obscured it perhaps. But I get that this blues approach is very much how he approached music, not just in this song. Thank you for pointing that out😊

I don't throw this word around much at all, but he was by all means a genius.
She knows music. . . .
Witness to a Genius.💜🙏👏
This was the first song not to have a Video. Back in 87 it was unheard of. A pop video without a video in the 80's ?? Say what !!
It had a video. They’re showing the video in this clip. It was a lyric video.
@@suzeesix 💋🍒💋I think he means a standard video with a storyline. Also Prince didn’t want to make a video for this song, it was the record label that put that together. Videos back then were used for advertising, so they felt the song needed to have one...it didn’t.🍒💋🍒
@@purpleflowers699 Music videos are still used for advertising. The whole point is having something to watch when the music is being played on TV. No TV station wants to broadcast an empty screen.
I remember thinking the video was revolutionary as it featured animated computer graphics which I had never seen in a music video before.
The guitar on it was beautiful. In and out..lots of space….
Timeless masterpiece, the song and the album.
Loved this. Well done, NYT. ☮️
What a joyful subject!
Man I was gorgeous
Sign of The ( COVID-19 & USA' gods squads- Killer-cops') Times:
"Just stop your crying
It's a sign of the times
Welcome to the final show
Hope you're wearing your best clothes
You can't bribe the door on your way to the sky
You look pretty good down here
But you ain't really good
If we never learn, we been here before
Why are we always stuck and running from
The bullets?
The bullets
We never learn, we been here before
Why are we always stuck and running from
The bullets?
The bullets
Just stop your crying
It's a sign of the times
We gotta get away from here
We gotta get away from here
Just stop your crying
It'll be alright
They told me that the end is near
We gotta get away from here
Just stop your crying
Have the time of your life
Breaking through the atmosphere
And things are pretty good from here
Remember everything will be…"
You WOKE yet you religious SLAVES? Nah, You aren't, yet, Kiddos! You are still just merely only crying, holding Virgil after Virgil and nonsensical PRAYERS, you slaves! 😊😷🤗😘😍

Rest in Purple, fake one
I'd love to see more o these on Prince, extremely interesting!🤘
R.I.P Prince 🤴🏻!!!!!! 😢👉🏻👈🏻💯
I'd really like to know how that incredible guitar sound came together.
Me too!! I’ve been trying to learn it for years.
A combination of technique, and innovative use of guitar pedals.
I was 14 when this song came out and still know every single word
You see people thought after Purple Rain he reached his peak. He reached his commercial peak. But, the real stuff was coming after that. Because Sign O the Times was amazing. All of his subsequent albums had some gems on them. I mean he saturated us with enough music till we all transition. I believe that God has a sense of humor. You see it with the politicians. All the clowning. Here was a man who lived only 57 years and gave so much to the music world. Because he knew he could. Didn't get caught up with the hype. He was the hype. Rest in Power Prince. Thank U!
Gift from God
Genius
Other worldly
Prince
Y'all better recognize his Purple Majesty 💜👑 The type of recognition that should be given while living. #princeforever His music will always be timeless ☮️ Peace 🕊️ love 💜and light 🌟
Prince was the greatest musician we ever had , he had a unique talent his music will live on forever 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
Finally, an interesting video from the NYT
This video is one of the best. Raw detail of one of the most significant songs ever. An ex girlfriend, ex band member, and sound engineer .... all 3 there for it all ( well most of it) . Before the world got it. ..I think greatest album ever.
One of the highest achieving, yet still somehow underated, musical artists of all time
Wow, thank you!
“Sign o’ the times” is a Sociology class. Musically genius.
my favorite album,,, It has about 100 songs..
Again I cannot help myself this man was the genius of our time
Poetic, Prolific, Peaceful, Power Prince 💜💜💜💜💜💜❤️ 4ever in our lifes
Brilliant telling! ❤️
Thank You! The insight and "method"(yeah, right!) of his craft that i've been curious to see for years!
He is the first artist who made me recognise what is music truly means. I was a person who sees lyrics as the most important part in a song but his music made me realise only the instruments are playing also can touch my soul real hard. Such a greatest artist of all time ❤ too late to find out this man since my city (hong kong ) is not much people tended to know him. (People just know mj between both of them) Feels lonely to admire prince in hk😔😢
Also prince was such a wise person
Mj was full of wisdom too but since he was more likely identified as an idol people just loved gossiping him. But both of them are so intelligent and had sharp personalities
'Here come the Purple Yoda...' 💜
Guaranteed to bring the dirty new sound
When I heard "how you met Prince?" I remember the Chappelle show
Great video, thank you.
