I'm starting to realise the most effective exercises seem to be from what physiotherapists would usually recommend. Being someone who has todo 3-5 days a week of physio. I've noticed I get higher activation in the glute medius when doing very simple movements like this.
You have bad knees because your glutes are weak. I have done a lot of physical therapy to fix my bad knees. Have you tried to do basic clamshells and side lying leg abduction to start the rehab process? You need to do more than that, but those are a great start. The glute medius can get weak and then cause a tracking problem with the knee cap. This causes pain. Hope this helps. the exercise in the video is closed chain which can be done as well, but sometimes you need to do a more basic exercise to get started. Another good one is single leg RDL for hamstrings.
what about flexing the knee with abduction? This is something my physios strictly reinforced when I was doing my hip rehab. Same thing with side plank clam shells, bent knee like fetal position and then abduct.
