  • Why on earth is Australia allowed in Eurovision? It isn't even in Europe.
    Every year around Eurovision, people start asking this question: Why is Australia participating in Eurovision?
    In this video I look at the different aspects, from migration from Europe, to the Australian music industry, the special role of broadcaster SBS and participations of Aussies long before Australia proper joined the Eurovision Song Contest. Show this video to non fans before the final or semi-final and finally enjoy the Australian entry at Eurovision without having to explain yourself ;)

    As a second-gen Greek Australian, I've pretty much been watching ESC since I was born, I've been getting up at 5am for it for over a decade now, and my parents have been watching it since the 80s too as the children of Greek migrants. Greek and Italian migrant communities in Aus especially are very strong to this day, and were a huge part of why it was even broadcast here and its continued popularity (especially within these communities of European migrants), as you've talked about. I remember being like 12 or something when it was announced we'd get to participate and it felt like the most exciting day of my life lmaoo

      Couldn't agree more with this comment. So many of us have been waking up at 5am to watch ESC with our families our entire childhood; it's a tradition in my family as well. There are large Italian, Greek, ex-Yugoslav communities here in Australia. Also worth mentioning that we have the largest Maltese diaspora in the world.

    We are so good at ESC and it allows our artists to get exposure they deserve that would be impossible otherwise. It is also a massive cultural thing here and SBS really care about it and we also have good commentators. I would be so sad if we left but I really don’t think it is 100% likely that it won’t happen.

    Something I really don't like is how Gatekeeping people get when they ask "Why is Australia/Israel in Eurovision, it's not even in Europe" or "I didn't know it was in Europe", "It's called EUROvision, not World vision".
    Giving a very strong vibe of "Eurovision is OUR thing, and you can't have it. You can't join our special club"

    The 2 Australians from The New Seekers (UK 1972) we’re part of a very famous Australian 60s band appropriately called The Seekers. They were a big hit in both Australia and the UK (the most successful internationally an Australian band had really ever been back then), and I like to think slightly better than the new rendition 2 members formed in the 1970s. It was the fact that the lead singer, Judith Durham RIP, decided she had enough and the band broke up to focus on her own individual career. Maybe it was a sign all of them should have too haha!

    I'm watching from Australia and I don't know why we are in Eurovision, but I do think we fit in well. The Eurovision aesthetic is closer to Australian than it is to British taste, and our results over the years reflect this. Don't forget that Australia was the first country outside of Sweden where ABBA had massive chart success following their Eurovision victory.

    I wish one day Eurovision will be like Olympics and countries from of all around the world could participate. It is so uniting and fun, we get to know artists, cultures, authenticity, drama of course haha, and a lot of great convos before and after the show. Australia is a brother of us, we love them, their songs and their vibes.

    • @Crudeliciousbops
      @Crudeliciousbops Місяць тому +1

      Eurovision will lose its identity and specialness if it's a competition for every country around the globe. It's a very European thing that has intrigued a number of countries on the outside, so we'll simply broadcast to those who are interested, (except China cuz they censored a bunch of our broadcast.) Then there're other parts of the world that doesn't agree with EBU's liberal stance and policy. The broader it gets can also invite more corruption and interference and that would guarantee its downfall.

    • @dia_mantoula
      @dia_mantoula Місяць тому

      @@Crudeliciousbops well if you seek its history, it actually had that kind of vision regarding the effects of the competition. It was made to unite the states within EU and to let them get to know eachother through the contest. The actual vision was somehow to act like the Olympics, where different nations and states will compete for the sake of unity, excitement and expression. Eurovision, I may admit, brought a lot within our homes, personalities and acts like Dana, Conchita, Verka, Chikilicuatre, the absolute Saxoman from Sunstroke project, Lordi, etc., artists like Johnny Logan, ABBA, Celine Dion, Duncan Laurence, Alexander Rybak, Dima Bilan, Eleni Foureira, etc... It has become part of our lives, a lot of people gather at home that night and have realtime reactions and discussions, while guessing tops, etc.
      Despite that, I believe that many citizens from various countries have come closer to another country through similarities and differences. I am aware that people are searching each artists' background, I have seen them dive into other countries' music in general, just because one song from Eurovision drove their interest. And this is huge, apart from winning the contest or even the semifinals. It is a great opportunity for people to feel heard, seen and appreciated through art. That's why I support this Idea. And it would be better if everyone talked all year around about art than stupid stuff.

    • @andyt8216
      @andyt8216 29 днів тому

      No, absolutely not. Something else maybe, but it’s the “Europeanness” of Eurovision which makes it special. Only other European countries should now join, be it Monaco etc coming back or Kosovo being allowed to finally join.
