Music and Storytelling in Over The Garden Wall

  • Over The Garden Wall is, without a doubt, one of my favorite pieces of animation of all time. Between the story, characters, art, and music, I just can't stop digging into the show to learn more.
While it would take me an hour (or more?) to go as in depth as I'd be able to with this piece, I'm focusing here on how the music supports the story structure. In the process, I go on some tangents about German lied and storytelling structures in animation and television in general. Hopefully this video provides some insight on how these elements are unified in this heart-warming masterpiece.
Although the scope of this project prevented me from uploading in October, I still wanna say... Happy Spooky Season, everyone!

This has a criminally low amount of views! I desperately wanted videos on Over the Garden Wall's music, and I'm so happy I found yours. Great work!

Thanks! So glad you enjoyed it. I agree, too few videos about the music from this show. It's SO good yet there's so little about it.

The tune of Come Wayward souls is the same melody as the Lacrymosa from Verdi's requiem! I've always thought the melody sounded a lot like Mahler, so it's fun to see you compare it to a german Lieder

This was an incredibly well done video essay, especially considering (to echo other comments) the criminally low number of views. The close connection of OTGW to Schubert's song cycle in particular was a really fascinating observation! I'll definitely be checking out other things you made :)

Yooo dude, such a solid video. I remember watching otgw 6 years ago when it premiered, and being fascinated with the music style. I knew i loved the music, but never knew why and this im depth analysis is so fantastic. Once again, fanatastic video with great editing.

Okay, fellow OTGW nerds. What did I miss? What do you have different ideas about? What would you want to see me talk about more? I’m here to talk about cartoons!

wirt and lorna sing like ships together! it's a weird example because they're both onscreen together but the music is being played incidentally over them, but it is an example of wirt singing something deep and heartfelt as opposed to his pilgrim song in the tavern. it's also particularly strange given that it's one of the only musical moments we get out of wirt in the series and it happens to be a love song sung with someone other than his show-long love interest. there's something about calypso-esque stories like this where the characters know that they have to leave eachother forever to get on with their journeys that really hits me in the gothic/romantic sensibilities.
on a slightly different note, there's also the "for sara" cassette that can be found on youtube which reveals more wirt poetry (and clarinet!), though it's not exactly an element of the series itself, just a cute little side treasure.

@@AppleheadIsCool I was trying to think of a way to include Like Ships, but I couldn’t think of a way to do it without adding a lot of extra time and caveats, but this is such a good and succinct to explain it :)

I was hoping to hear something about the song(s) in Cloudville. I was thinking that they sound upbeat and fun and really like something Greg would come up with himself, but they’re just a bit off beat. When you played the song the Beast “sings” it seemed to me to be slightly off beat as well, which I thought could be a sort of symbolism or something of that nature. I could be wrong, but I was hoping to hear something about Cloudville.

This is so unspeakably wonderful. Over the Garden Wall is probably my favorite piece of media of all time. You've put so much of what makes this show's soundtrack poignant and unforgettable into detailed description-- thank you

I’ve always loved the music of this show so seeing the specifics of how it interacts with the story gives it something of a whole new perspective. I also learned that more complex music can translate to the hinting of a deeper meaning or theme, so thank for teaching me something new!

Found this video through the Over the Garden Wall subreddit. Very insightful! The part about the increased complexity in the frogs narrator's songs to signify their importance was particularly fascinating to me. I had a gut feeling that they just "felt" different, but I couldn't quite tell why.

this is great! I knew the music was wonderful, but it's interesting to see how much thought was put into how it fits the narrative.
now, I know this video is two years old... but I have to ask, what genre of music would you consider the Prelude song to be? I'm wanting to find more music like that song, but I have no idea what it would be considered
