Literally my english teacher showed this show to us in class because it supposedly relates to Dante's Inferno which we were reading at the time. It was really fun to pick apart the scenes and there are so many easter eggs its crazy

i watched an analysis called "over the garden wall is dante's inferno" and i found it so interesting. the show is full of so many little details and symbolism, it makes it especially fun to rewatch it

the varying time periods of the outfits make me feel even more sure that the unknown is a kind of afterlife/purgatory rather than a fantasy world or parallel universe
I think it's both.
In the very last episode you see a grave stone that has Endicotts (or however you spell it) last name, proving that the people in the unknown have died already and wirt and Greg’s voyage to the unknown was a voyage throughout purgatory
i agree! and to add onto this, in episode 9, when greg and wirt are hiding behind the graves in the graveyard while watching sara and her friends, one of the graves they hide behind has Quincy Endicott’s name on it! :) very interesting little detail i noticed

I think it definitely takes place in some type of liminal space that could contain both, traveling souls that share the space where we dream and where timeless stories go every time they're told

i have a theory that the old grist mill was actually beatrice's family home until they all got turned into bluebirds! starting off, the introduction in the first episode shows beatrice by a stream with the dog/"beast". the woodsman tells the boys that he found the home abandoned. and, maybe the most obvious thing, the old grist mill has a few bluebird decorations! i'm sure that this is obvious to some people but i've never seen it talked about before:-)

Hi! I’m quite sure that Wirt’s cape is not a union infantry soldier uniform. It is a WWII nurse’s cape. It’s looks extremely similar if you look it up so it must be a direct reference. The fact that he wears part of a nurse uniform is interesting given the role he plays at the end of the show as a protector (I will not spoil).
The hat he discards is definitely a Union hat not a nurse’s hat.

Just to clarify, I wasn't talking about the hat but the cape that Wirt wears. The hat and the cape do not have to be apart of the same uniform.
And it would fit his character's questioning of identity to try on different pieces from different uniforms in time for different genders even.

There’s a brazilian tv show called “Hoje é dia de maria” = today is maria’s day. It’s set in the northeastern sertão, and it follows the story of a little girl called maria who’s trying to scape her abusive father & stepmother to go see the sea (her dream). The show is full of brazilian folklore and old timey stories like cinderella, and the entire set and costumes were recycled. There’s a ball scene in which maria is wearing an entire dress made of water bottles caps! I think it’d be really interesting to see your thoughts on the costumes!

It's a Rock Fact! When i was watching this series, in chapter 8 i was wondering why did they called this chapter "babes in the woods" it was too peculiar to me. Then i was scrolling down the comment section of CN that uploaded chapter one for this series, he says that babes in the woods is actually an traditional english tales, it was about two children dying in the woods and i think that just blow my mind XD

I noticed that often the headwear in the show is the opposite of the character's personality. Ex: Wirt, who is intelligent, has a hat reminiscent of a dunce cap, Greg wears a teapot, and tea in America is mostly associated with sophisticated, posh Brits or calmness, Adelaide's hat has ribbons and flowers, implying youth/childishness and an outdoorsy feeling, the woodsman's top hat indicates status and sophistication, and lorna and aunty whispers wear caps the represent innocence
Considering the fact that the beast literally turns kids to trees I'd say that the johnny appleseed theory is spot on.

Its a very american thing to be a certain “thing” for halloween, such as a character or a person. Here in the UK at least (especially rural areas) we often dress as made up creatures and monsters, using what we have to make strange outfits. I know its an american show but its funny the cultural difference, i never even questioned that wirts costume wasnt a person/character/creature, growing up me and my friends allways made up our own costumes out of what we had.
Can verify! I grew up in rural Scotland and we were almost never a set character or thing. We just dressed up in weird things that we’re different from our normal clothes, usually with handmade masks or hats.
I grew up in hawaii where people would just throw on some weird looking clothing and some facepaint and call it a day.
I love this. It doesn't have to be a costume OF something, it's just a costume. 😄
That was still the way a lot of people in the US did it up until about the 1980s. My mom and her friends lived in the heart of a city in the 60s and 70s, and they were too poor to buy costumes so they threw together outfits from whatever they had at hand, usually not having any specific idea in mind about what they were supposed to be. In 90s and early 00s suburbia, I was always a generic character- a cat, a witch, a ghost, ect- made from clothes around the house and face paint, and the switch to more mass-produced and less generic costumes that really started in the 80s totally eclipsed homemade/vaguer costumes in the mid to late 00s. Since Over the Garden Wall is set some time post-1992 (Wirt has a casette tape referencing the rock band 4 non blondes who released their first studio album in October of that year), him not being anything in particular is kind of odd, even though making his own costume probably wouldn’t have been.
on my country ( Brazil ) we don't actually celebrate halloween but we have Carnaval, during the festive weeks you don't actually need to be a character, you can match with a friend to be sun and Moon, stars and sky or only use colorful glitters, funky clothes and acessories
This was very interesting. One missed reference: Beatrice mentions sewing coins into her clothing. I'm not sure if this is related, but it was common for some to sew coins into their clothing while traveling to prevent theft. The Roma are known best for it, but I'm pretty sure Irish immigrants to America also did it.

So much so that when they were finally killed by firing squad, some of them didn't die right away because the riches basically made bullet-proof vests.
An interesting titbit on the British accent: However, what is known as the current British accent did not arise until the mid 1700s. In fact, the English and Americans shared an accent during the initial British migration to the United States. But contrary to what most people believe this accent was very similar to what Americans now speak.
I’ve heard more recently this is a myth, or at least exaggerated. There is apparently a rather isolated island in the U.S. that has retained the early English settler accent, and it is definitely distinct from modern American accents. But, it also is an accent that can definitely be heard in some accents in the UK as well, just not the stereotypical Received Pronunciation type accents.
It is definitely true that the American accent for the most part is the more conservative accent and has changes less over the years than it has in England

If you look at the way English pronunciation changed over the years like the great vowel shift for example you can see that the American accent "stopped changing" while the English accent "went a step further" but they both come from a pronunciation that is actually more German sounding
I think you mean only the rp accent because there are tons and tons of different distinct accents in the uk that have existed for centuries

Fun fact: Wirt's clothes choice was most likely inspired by Dante Alighieri's most popular portrait, made by Sandro Botticelli, in which he is painted wearing a tall pointy (although slightly curvy) red hat and a jacket with a very similar collar to the one Wirt wears. It's a nod to the Divine Comedy, Dante's masterpiece about travelling through hell, purgatory and paradise, which heavily inspired Over the Garden Wall
I feel like endicot and Marguerite and their extensive mansions could be a reference of the British and French empires since they're "business rivals" who's mansions are so big they're building up against each other.

Random fun fact: the designs for Adelaide and Auntie Whispers are inspired by John R. Neill’s illustrations for the Oz book series by L. Frank Baum. Auntie Whispers is basically a copy of Neill’s design for the witch Mombi in “The Marvelous Land of Oz” published in 1904 with her cloak and white bonnet, while Adelaide is very similar to Neill’s design for how the Wicked Witch of the East appears in “The Tin Woodman of Oz” published in 1918 with the orange color palette and witch’s hat wrapped in string.

I've always loved the contrast between Wirt not being sure of who he is and that being represented with how he dones't know what he's supposed to be for halloween, vs Greg who knows exactly who he is and what he's dressing up as even if others don't see it or don't understand it

Great video! Greg actually isn't wearing two different shoes during the series though, in the episode Hard Times at the Huskin' Bee he steps on a pumpkin and ever since then the color of his shoe was black- it was a small detail from the artists.
Animators mess up on stuff like that all the time in 2D animation. I'm not sure why, but they do.

You forgot Adelaide! She's also dressed in 17th c clothing, albeit of a higher class than the Puritan-inspired outfits of her sister Auntie Whispers and Lorna. Adelaide's outfit is heavily German-inspired; especially the embroidery on her clothes and the tall, flat-topped "Mother Goose" hat.
I love the clothing style in this miniseries!! Each episode is inspired in a different period yet the series managed to look cohesive at the same time. Amazing work as always!
I love how all over the place the costuming is because I think it adds to the whimsical dreamlike feel of the unknown. It feels like a person with no sense of historical fashion was made to design the costumes, like it’s the product of a random persons dream

I think that the English have the stereotype of liking tea because they drink it a lot more over there-at least that is what was told to me growing up in China. The tea cultures are actually extremely different and it’s really interesting to see how they developed (I think China still produces the most tea hence “all the tea in China” but that may have changed?). Interestingly Turkey actually drinks the most tea and have their own culture around the drink (my favourite tea is actually Turkish Apple Tea!)
Its true they drink it a lot over there, but the reason why, at least the reason I was taught, it interesting. Basically, at the time, there was a lot of issues with water sanitation in England, and it was greatly affecting public health. When tea was brought over, they were initially marketed as these “magic leaves” that, when prepared in a specific way, cleaned the water. Of course, it’s just because that preparation process included boiling, which sanitized the water anyways, but it meant that for awhile, all water there had to be made into tea to be drinkable.

Re. not knowing if there was a deeper meaning to the Johnny Appleseed thing: I don't think it's deeper than "he's got kitchen stuff on his head". My guess is they came up with an in-universe explanation for why after the design was already made, since they changed the premise after the short, "Tome of the Unknown" but Greg had the teapot on his head back then. I think the tree connection was an accident that McHale would've loved to hear about.
Also, I think you missed a trick with Margaritte -- it's heavily implied that the Unknown is a part of some sort of afterlife, and Quincy had a headstone in the graveyard in Wirt and Greg's time, so we know he's passed on in our world. So the insinuation here is (I think) that she and Quincy both lived in the same house only in different time periods but met up in the Unknown.

There's a theory that The Unknown is supposed to be purgatory and everyone there is dead and stuck because they have unfinished business or something still holding them to their past life. The fact that everyone is wearing clothing from such vastly different time periods could support this theory. Some have been stuck longer than others.
Over the Garden Wall was one of my favorite Cartoon Network shows, it has such a dark fairy tale aesthetic that no other show had ever acomplished, and its imagery spoke to me in such a fundamental level.

on wirts costume, i think hes probably a gnome, since it was said in the show. but i think its more funny to imagine that hes dressed as his own D&D wizard character, that seems like something he would do. (not sure if the timeline of D&D existing and otgw line up tho)
I do study linguistics and language history but I'm by no means an expert. It's a very logical assumption that colonial Americans would have "British" accents, and technically they did but the general consensus from what I know is that the colonial era British accent actually more closely resembled a cross between a modern American and Irish accent, and sounded very different from the modern "Queen's English" British accent, which developed in England AFTER the split of America. So while George Washington and others would have had a somewhat "British" accent for the time, we would not recognize it as a British accent today and it would instead sound much more like an American accent.
I'm watching OTGW right now since it's Halloween and it's so interesting to learn little details of the series like this!

I have the art book and I flip through it all the time. I love it so much! The art book talks a lot about the origins and art of the series. Also the costume of Wirt and many items in the show are inspired by real life items the creator has. The art is ahhhh good. I would kill for a Wirt cape.
Also my theory of how all the characters and outfits are from different time periods is that those people (or their ancestors) got trapped in the unknown from different time periods. And also over time they have mingled and have taken some inspiration and clothing from people from other time periods

Fun detail- the picture you show when talking about Margaritte Grey's costume, the lady's jackets, is the EXACT same pattern that I bought when making a Margaritte Grey costume myself a few years back. Such a great video! I think the show is steeped heavily in americana, which regardless of intended clothing choices... explains a lot the general aesthetics of the show. It also explains the johnny appleseed reference!
good to mention that, though the costume design in the show takes inspiration from historical wear, it’s not set to be in a specific time period, particularly when they’re in the unknown world, it seems to take place somewhere that is not subject to time periods, therefore not subject to historical accuracy.

I see so many videos where people are like “that’s not accurate it’s 10 years late!” The MAJORITY of women did not have the money or time to keep up with trends considering that many women especially pre-industrial revolution made the fabric for their and their families clothes themselves! And even after the revolution it was still costly!

Nah I think it’s the opposite. (according to Mina in her newest video) those Japanese hairstyles were inspired by the Edwardian ones in the Meiji period when fashion in Japan was hugely inspired by the west.

I am not a linguist, but I am a history buff. Actually, the American accent is closer to watch British and American people were speaking in the 1700s. Aristocratic British youth attending university, developed what we would now call a British accent, and eventually it caught on with the rest of the country.

Johnny apple seed helped people establish property ownership in the early development of America. He would plant cider apples and help people learn how to tend to them so they could own the property for free. This was due to Americas plan to jump start its agricultural economy so it would no longer need to rely on importing food
great video, but i'd like to mention that the unknown doesn't take place at any time because all the characters are stuck in limbo. the unknown is basically purgatory so it makes since that all the characters from different time periods would coexist with one another.

11:05 I'm not a linguist either, but I do know quite a bit about linguistics. I'm pretty sure that what was spoken back then was more in the middle of a British or American accent, but leaned more towards American. I could be wrong though
