I don't blame Sarah for calling the police. I've had to do this to clients before (not a pet groomer, but I work with people) - people are really nuts lately.
yep. just took my pup in to get his expressed. well probably need to take him in again because they were pretty bad. he tends to get… pretty gunky. lmao but it’s absolutely the owners responsibility to figure it out! its not hard to tell. you can absolutely smell them. I guess some people are nose blind and have poor sense of smell especially after covid. but the dog will also lick and bite at their butt. not normal behavior
My male West Highland Terrier had his skirt accidentally shaved by a young, new groomer. This was December 31, 1999. The young man called me, scared to death to tell me. I said ‘I can’t believe you did that!’ Long pause, then I said ‘it’s just hair no big deal.’ 😂 He said ‘Oh my God, I was freaking out! Don’t do that. You scared me!’ 😂 We both laughed and I paid full price. Accidents happen, and yes, he looked bad but, the hair grew back. 🐶
There's lots of crazy people out there. I remember a guy at a restaurant recently tell the waitress that he ordered the "8 minute steak" (there was no such thing on the menu) and it had taken more than that to be served so he wanted a free meal
I admire how you stand up for yourself, especially with difficult owners, while remaining professional. I used to have a housecleaning business and people would get passive aggressive when I’d raise my rates even $5 an hour, even when I’d worked for them for 5+ years. It’s as if they thought that inflation only affected them or maybe they thought I didn’t pay taxes…? The amount of disrespect I experienced from entitled people was shocking. I’d stand my ground on it, but it was difficult and I don’t think I had your grace. So, well done 🎉
I do mobile grooming in Germany. I drive to the clients, they wash their dog the day before and I bring my table and do their dog at their place. I'd love to have a van.
I so enjoyed this program! I have a cleaning business for private homes and it is amazing how similar our experiences are though different occupations. I must be cleaning for the owners of the pets you groom!😂
It sucks that some of these horror stories are from long-time clients too. You'd hope and think the ones that worked with you the most would understand whenever shit happens or that you care enough about their pets that if you were being straight with them about issues it's for their health...but alas.
Love the podcasts. Working with the public is definitely an education. I worked in retail for many years and you definitely have to mix professional courtesy with a firm stance because there is a small fraction of people who will try to take advantage or manipulate a situation. I had a customer that would come in for free samples, (I worked in skin care and makeup) she would buy something to get the free samples and then return it a few days later. After watching this behavior for a few months, one day she came in and wanted to try something and I politely suggested she try another line as she had already tried all my products and I didn’t feel they were going to work for her. Her mouth hung open a minute or two, she looked at me kind of funny and then left. I never saw her again. She definitely didn’t expect the response I gave her.
Great stories! I had two professions, one was teaching kindergarten. A few wild stories of parents we had to deal with. In fact, one of the only bright spots of Covid was that parents were no longer allowed on campus! I can't see how anyone would think you could harm their dog. Your care of animals is shiningly clear. ♥
Retired licensed veterinary tech. Oh my god I remember dealing with things like this. Only it would be ever since my dog was spayed so on and so forth has been happening. When was she spayed? A year ago they would reply. Looking up record would see it was 3 years ago. There are so many stories! Every time my dog winces had me laughing so hard.
@@Traumatized_Mel oh goodness! There are great human stories too. I think any service career that deals with the public is going to have similar experiences…the common thread is human behavior. Both the outstandingly wonderful and awful live side by side!
I am very horrified yet slightly curious about the cheese eyes O.o Also, big kudos to these ladies and anyone who has to deal with pet owners on a daily basis... some of them are SO. INTENSE. I could never lol
Gizmo may have had Rocky Mountain spotted fever? I had a dog that contracted it and went from a super well behaved dog to an angry nightmare 😢. Young dog, too.
Really enjoying your client stories! Marlene, 25 year master groomer, always did the intakes so there would minimal surprises……. However there is always those wild card clients!
~51:00 There are people who blame the groomer for situations that aren't the groomer's fault, but there are also legitimate issues that happen. My dog has never had an issue with a groomer and I always got compliments on how well behaved and easy he was to groom. They got some new staff at the place we went to, and one particular time I took my dog to in (to the same place we had gone many times), when I picked him up I noticed a hot spot. I mentioned it and they denied causing it, even though it was not there when I dropped him off. I asked the name of the groomer who had "taken care of him" and next time I booked his appointment I specifically requested that XXXX not be allowed anywhere near my dog. They said "no problem, XXXX is not working the day of your appointment, but I will put a note on the account anyway to make sure the rest of the staff know that XXX isn't supposed to groom your dog." I picked him up from the next appointment and he had a bandage on his leg, which they did not even acknowledge when they brought him out. They told me how much I owed for the groom and I said, hold up, why is there a bandage on his leg, to which she said let me look it up and then told me he had been cut during the groom. I again asked who groomed him and was furious when they said it was XXXX. I told the woman I had specifically asked that XXX NOT be allowed to touch my dog, and she said "well she had to bc someone had called in sick." I said no, she didn't have to; someone could have called me to pick up my dog instead of allowing XXXX to groom him without permission. The manager came over then and comped the groom, and I told her I was going to the vet for the cut. I took the dog to the vet, had the cut treated and got antibiotics, had the groomers pay the bill, then never went back. I know mistakes happen, but if a client asks for a particular groomer to not touch their dog, they should either honor that request or tell the client it isn't possible so we can go somewhere else; not agree to it then allow that person to groom the dog anyway and try to hide it (they did not say anything about having to have XXXX groom him until after I asked about the cut on his leg).
Interesting experiences Bizarre too 🙃 You get all walks of life folk, when your work is dealing with the public Wow Thank you for sharing, very interesting seeing the other side of a groomers work ☀️💫🇬🇧
Hi Vanessa! I'm watching all your channels and just wanted to let you know that I am loving the podcast so much. I have such respect for you. I live in a smaller city in Texas and only wish there were a groomer as talented as you in my area. I wish you all the best in life and love.❤
On the subject of expressing glands I was only trained to express them externally If I felt I had to use more pressure than needed I checked with Marlene and usually referred to veterinarian care. I have seen glands that have been infected and clients expected me to clean them! Definitely a veterinarian visit
I just wanna say. My dog, a GSD mix, got cysts over and over, in different places, and the only way to get rid of them was to surgically remove them. They were so deep that to pop them wasn't enough. If you don't let the vet remove the whole sebaceous gland, it will come back. If I didn't go to the vet, they'd either pop themselves when they were "only" filled with sebum or it became an abscess and _then_ it'd pop (Of course, once I knew what it was I always went to the vet if there was an infection). It wouldn't have mattered if you cut it open, I believe you when you say you didn't, it would've popped anyway.
I genuinely think that animals learn what they hate at the vet or groomer when you take them a lot. We had a cat who had cancer, and the first time she got her temp taken at the vet she seemed surprised or ok, but the subsequent times she was more and more resistant to it and got angrier and angrier. I felt so bad, it must suck to not know why something is getting put in your butt.
It is too bad this happens and it only takes a couple of people going off the deep end. I was a professional photographer for and there were just a few people that you remember that are not the best clients for your business. Lucky for me, I was able to filter out most of these difficult people as my clients.
Hello Venessa...loved your podcast. You know, it's interesting to hear your client stories because as a professional writer, prospective clients want to nickel and dime me all the time. They think its so easy to write for others, especially if they haven't even thought out what they want written themselves, but expect me to put in labor intensive work for a half-a-penny a day.. Insane. Yes, people are crazy!
It is crazy that owners don’t disclose information about their dog. My old dog (who has passed on) would have a full report about her having dementia, blindness, lipomas, anxiety, what scared her, etc every time I took her to the groomer….who was the same person almost every time. I didn’t even care what she looked like the last 2 years. We would shave her down to extend the time between grooms, and all I really cared about was her eyes being cleaned up. (I have no clue how they always got her face looking good every time)
I also worked with the public for many years. I found that people who are ineffective in their lives, take it out on those of us who work with the public. We’re supposed just take it, customer is always right!! Not really!!😂

I'm really loving your podcast! You are so profession and have the biggest heart, and it's clear by how you have an old employee come on your show. If I lived in Canada, there is nobody else I would want to work under to learn the skills of this trade! ❤ ps: when clients send you passive aggressive messages, you should really say to them (after logically and kindly explaining to them why they are incorrect): "For the future, groomers aren't an airport, you do not need to announce your arrival or departchure." Because if they want to be vindictive, clearly they are somebody who needs to get knocked down a peg because they think way too highly of themselves. I get that you always want to be professional and you can laugh it off, but sometimes people need reality to smack back a little because it is NOT okay for grown adults to be treating others like this!
The male client who stated you have no overhead due to the fact that you work out of your home is either a fool was making a feeble attempt to be con man.
I wont let a groomer squeeze my dogs glands as it has caused issues in the past with inflammation and still needed more squeezing and where I have to take my dog to the vet after anyway. I do my own dogs nails also im scared that the groomer my nick the quick and then I wont be able to get them to let me do them.

I already had the greatest of respect for you Vanessa, that respect has now gone up infinitely! I had no idea of some of the things you have to deal with, mostly, hmmm.... let's say 'unpleasant' people to keep things clean here 😂 Humans are the worst, not all, just most of them. Sarah was a lovely guest. Well done for diving in with the trailer and just going for it, respect to you too. Drive safe and I wish you the best of luck with it all. Regarding dogs with the rotten teeth that don't get addressed, here in the UK I would take photos and video and report the owner to the SSPCA (Scotland where I am) or the RSPCA in England. Not to be vindictive but for the sake of the animal. Do you have anything like that there? I enjoyed that chat, thank you for doing it. I sat here on my sofa with a coffee and some chocolate biscuits nodding here and there and a few 😲 and NOOOOO's lol. It was almost like I was there ☺ Oh and whatever that room you were in is very nice. I'm looking forward to next weeks episode, I'll get some extra chocolate biccies in so you can have some too ☺ Cheers to you both 🥂
I worked in a veterinary hospital for 7+ years. There was a dog, she was an English Springer Spaniel and her name was Sencha. I was so scared of her. A good thing about her, she was food motivated. So I could coax her into the outdoor space. But at some point, she bit onto the stick.
I also tried mobile grooming. I lasted one day that was it. I knew then I was a brick and mortar groomer. I have a lot of respect for mobile groomers. I love watching your videos. It brings me back to the good old days. I just retired a year ago. 40 years of grooming is very hard on your body. So all groomers out there. Please take care of your body. Thanks for the awesome videos.
I do want to say something about anal glands. I have an overbite, which means my mouth is usually open all the time. I was doing a dogs anal glands and it squirted to the side and got in my mouth. I went through a whole bottle of scope, and I still wasn’t happy. That was my worst experience with anal glands.
My dog started having dryer seizures at about 9 years old. It was so scary the first time it happened 🥺. We had to let him air dry after that first time. I believe it’s the high velocity dryers that somehow connected with the seizures. I’ve been grooming 40 years (now retired ) and I only started experiencing dryer seizures when I started using a high velocity dryer. Back in the day we just hand dried a dog with a stand dryer. Dogs can hear frequencies we can’t. So I am assuming there is something that’s setting off the dogs brain when the high velocity dryer is used. Just my opinion.
In my country only the vet is allowed to do anal glands, I was shocked when I learned that in America and now Canada groomers do it. When I was doing my training it was drilled into me to not touch anal glands and always refer to the vet when something seems off about them
So so sad how some people don't care for their pets the way they need. They *think* they do. Unfortunately my ma is much the same, she has had several pets over the years and I don't recall them ever going to the vets, even when her elderly terrier had miscarried and when she was in a fight with a badger (she allowed it to free roam unsupervised) and when all of her teeth were falling out. The dog eventually passed after being hit by a car. The same manner her self-proclaimed "soul mate" previous dog (my childhood dog...) had passed. She never learned her lesson. It was a fight with her to keep her current cat indoors as she lives by a busy road. Honestly...there needs to be an empathy test for pet owners.
My last got training he had a pronged collar cuzz he was huge and I’m tiny great for grooming horrible at home def bit me my dog now not aggressive ever but tried to clip his nails he bit my hand repeatedly he wears a pronged collar cuzz normal collar he slips his harness I can’t hold onto him he needs some training we’re gonna do but my husband isn’t home he’s out of the country so gotta train a dog again on my own lol
Someone asked for your hair care tips. Would you add your regimen for hand care. I’ve never known anyone who constantly works with water and detergent who doesn’t have damaged skin, but yours looks as if you work in an office.
Hi Vanessa and Sarah. Quite the stories. Love the program. So often the problem is the owners..the one from Toronto is a prey good example of the animal acting out the problems of the owners.
Oh god, that lady on the phone sounds just like a lady I had to deal with when I was still working as a manager at Domino's and a lady that tried to start something at a Dairy Queen Grill n Chill we were waiting in line at. Crazy, full blown "Karen's". Just ya'll know, NO, the customer is NOT always right and any customer that tries to pull this card knows they aren't but they're just projecting.
Maybe that lady who complained about shaved part was thinking, well don't shave it detangle it like you can do wonders. What if you let them know beforehand that you will shave the matted parts if needled
It's easier to hear yourself speak and make sure you're not being too loud or soft on the microphone. It's the same reason musicians wear headphones in the recording studio.

I work for Goodwill…the president/ceo of my region was in my store today actually. The amount of stupid customers i see is…well, honestly, I’m not even mad about working for Goodwill anymore. It’s just disappointing working there now.
@@anthonybarnes1903and that’s while you’ll remain working at goodwill with a shitty life. Your need to call people stupid and your self righteous high horse attitude
Vanessa, this is totally random, but I absolutely LOVE your hair! It's just gorgeous!
LOVE the intro music!!
I only just saw you have this channel too and I'm in! 😁
My wife and I are faithful viewers of your regular show. We are now faithful viewers of your fantastic podcast! Thanks for doing it.
Thank you ladies for sharing your experiences with us
I already had the greatest of respect for you Vanessa, that respect has now gone up infinitely!
It was almost like I was there ☺
Oh and whatever that room you were in is very nice.
I'm looking forward to next weeks episode, I'll get some extra chocolate biccies in so you can have some too ☺
Cheers to you both 🥂
I worked in a veterinary hospital for 7+ years. There was a dog, she was an English Springer Spaniel and her name was Sencha. I was so scared of her. A good thing about her, she was food motivated. So I could coax her into the outdoor space. But at some point, she bit onto the stick.
As a business owner in the beauty industry, its the same crazies in the human industry as well😅
I also tried mobile grooming.
The story with the poor old dog with the teeth destroyed me. The poor thing.
In my country only the vet is allowed to do anal glands, I was shocked when I learned that in America and now Canada groomers do it. When I was doing my training it was drilled into me to not touch anal glands and always refer to the vet when something seems off about them
getting pooped on, peed on and thrown up on sounds just like being a parent
And yet, parents get pissed when us pet owners say that having a pet is like being a parent.🙄🙄
@@jynclr Because pets are still pets and kids are still kids.
@@BlueDauntless Right. Both have challenges in raising, but you are still similarly raising a life. I see nothing wrong with comparing the two.
it is. except maybe other people's babies
There are also water spray seizures
Those are also super scary
OMG, this woman on the phone call was sooo rude! I would also call to police
Those video posts Vanessa does on certain pets must be great if and when the owners say she is doing something wrong.
Love your podcast. 😊
Love your podcast!!!!! ❤
I love your channel!! ❤
Interesting show, thanks! Just a suggestion that’s made with love: would be great to hear a little more from the guests ❤️
Holy cow that lady! 😂 Like does she have way too much time on her hands, or is she off her pills?
I really enjoyed these stories. People can be brutal, however the majority of people are nice❤
i liked hearing the stories :o
Some people are just crazy!! I try to be very understanding. We’re all human and things happen
Vanesa nice interview.
Vanessa scrubs up well 😊
I love the podcast coming from Alberta! ❤
Great insight
First! Love you Van!

WOW Vanessa ur Absolutely stunning and gorgeous 🥰
Love the stories!
Another great for podcast. 🤟
Loving this podcast ❤️🐶
Maybe that lady who complained about shaved part was thinking, well don't shave it detangle it like you can do wonders. What if you let them know beforehand that you will shave the matted parts if needled
Tell her to film everything!! That woman is a Karen!!! Karen's like to blame everybody else for their problems.
I like the murder mystery music
just wondering why you are wearing headphones.
It's easier to hear yourself speak and make sure you're not being too loud or soft on the microphone. It's the same reason musicians wear headphones in the recording studio.
@@debrafisher7373 many thanks for your clarification. much appreciated.

The Portuguese was probably aggressive like that because of the bad owner it was with.
love you vanessa
Hi, Sarah's enemy! 😂
Let me get this straight... the crazy lady blames Sarah for not noticing something was wrong with her dog after seeing it every few weeks or months when she sees her dog every damn day and didn't notice???
