This is why the lyrics are such an incredibly awesome quality. There might be something that inspires him to write a song but he writes it in a fashion that makes all of us think about ourselves and our world and interpret this song is a little differently than each other. This is what great music is about, he’s never talking literally and takes my mind to places it doesn’t otherwise go.
I do believe that you two are discovering the very nature and name of this wonderful band. Tool is just that...a tool to work the mind, heart and soul of the listener. Great reactions and conversation. It only gets better....have fun!☆
This has been one of my favorite reaction/review vids. The discussion is wonderful and insightful. You add value to the experience of watching and digesting the vid/music. Keep these up!
I`ve just discovered your channel.. I am a TOOL fan and it`s great to see your comments in the songs you guys had reviewed... Hope to see more of you (the latest àlbum Fear Inoculum for example), greetings from Mèxico..
When you said the music is getting better and better I think you touched on a couple things. First, the more you listen to TOOL the more you appreciate it. Second, I think TOOL is one of those rare bands where their music gets better with each album as they evolve. A lot of bands best music is their earlier albums, and then often, at the pressure of record labels, pump out less inspired music just to meet record contract requirements. TOOL has always kept artistic control over their music and not given in to record label demands. Their last album took 13 years and is arguably their best. But most of all they have never put out music just to make money. Every song and every album has been painstakingly crafted. They never cut corners or compromise for anything less then excellence.
Welcome to the Tool army. You're gonna enjoy much of their music. You'll be guaranteed views and subs for your reaction. And we all are for it! Spiral out! Edit: nevermind you already began the journey! Dope!
Great reaction once again. The look of confusion on your face when you realized the words didn't match up on the first version was priceless. Many of us have shared that experience as well. Can't wait until you get to Lateralus and 10,000 Days. And A Perfect Circle. And Puscifer. Have fun and ride the spiral to the end.
You guys are very intelligent and I find your breakdowns of Maynard’s lyrics inspiring and thoughtful! I won’t spoil anything but I think by the time you get to Lateralus, you’ll discover the meanings in the lyrics become far more compelling on a spiritual and transcendental level. So keep it up! :)
Great channel. Love Tool. I really like that he is sharing this with her and that she values it. That you both are taking the time to do this. It's nice to see.
I just subscribed. Great reactions. I enjoy the fact that you see and discuss the many layers of these songs. Most people don't take the time to break it down and work out their meanings.. Cheers frim the 🇺🇸 US.
Well I’ve watched all your reactions to TOOL. I love it when somebody is experiencing one of my favorite bands of all time. If you keep making, I’ll keep watching. But I would also like to address the elephant in the room that I haven’t seen in the comments yet. This may ...Or may not make your husband/boyfriend? a little jealous. But my goodness you are absolutely stunning.... beautiful!! ok keep up the good work. You’ve made a new fan from the city of Upland ,SO Cal.
The depth of lyricism in Tool are carried over to Maynards other bands A perfect Circle and Puscifer. I wish you could incorporate those or maybe a separate channel to them! That would be fantastic!!!
Contrary to some of the comments here this song isn't about anyone in the band's struggles with alcohol or addiction but rather a song written about someone the band members knew who could only perform at his artistic best when he was high. The line "Jesus won't you fucking whistle" is basically another way of saying "Christ would you say something else; something new?" as the person they wrote the song about constantly droned on about the same stuff. Adam Jones said in an interview with Guitar School: "The song and video are based on a guy we know who is at his artistic best when he's loaded. A lot of people give him shit for that. I don't tell people to do or not do drugs. You can do what you want, but you have to take responsibility for what happens. If you become addicted and a junkie, well, that's your fault." Can't wait to see the rest of Undertow album, especially Disgustipated!
@@bryannotbrian thx for this! Real cool to see. It appears to be an early iteration of the song. Lyrics are pretty different based on the ones I could make out.
@@stormywaters1565 my pleasure, Maynard changed some of the lyrics, so it's still quite possible the other members knew who the inspiration for the song was... they like to mess with their fans and the media and leave things open to interpretation and keep them guessing/thinking.
Some Tool fans y’all are. In the 1993 Reading festival, Maynard takes the “Jesus whistle” chorus out of the performance and replaces it with another “Mother Mary” chorus. Have you guys even seen the the live video? If you have, and you know your Tool lyrics by heart, you should’ve realized this immediately.
You are exactly right about the song being about addiction. Maynard struggled with alcohol addiction for many years as a result of his traumatic childhood. You will find that every album is a journey through his relationship with himself and the process of his healing. Tool's discography really does begin with Maynard's blunt honesty about his experiences, and they travel through his realization that regardless of what we experience, we are all ultimately responsible for how we choose to feel.
It's not about him. I've never seen a lick of evidence Maynard has ever had a substance issue, actually a very driven and self-controlled, if at times angry and wounded, individual, and it's pretty well known this song is about an acquaintance of the band and what a pain in the ass they were to deal with.
@@Vmole1 Sorry chief, but you're not remotely as informed as you like to think. Better do a little more reading before you start acting like you and maynard are personal friends.
Powerful song about struggling with addiction and the hold it has on you. More specifically about the band's original bassist at the time, he wasn't able to be creative without being high/loaded. The song was inspired by his struggles specifically but works on a larger scale and different types of personal issues.
It isn't about Paul D'Amour, or at the very least I can find no evidence to support this. Paul's split from Tool was amicable from what I can gather; he was just not as into spending 8 hours working on one riff to get it perfect. He claimed their creative process was just "too much" for him and decided to part ways.
Great reaction, subbed. Also, to just make a quick side note: for your upcoming reaction, the song "Bottom" is the only song in which another vocalist is present in the entire TOOL catalog, so that may be something worth looking into before listening just to get an idea of the other artist.
Next two songs are Bottom and Crawl Away, I think you already have a pretty good idea where this album is headed. Every Tool album is a concept album. Enjoy your spiral down the Tool rabbit hole. You're just getting started...
I see why she is at the forefront of these videos. Mesmerizing, pretty/beautiful and intelligent, but it drives me a little crazy to just hear him in the background. Like... get in the picture dude! I'm not saying you should, go with what works, but my mind keeps thinking you should go and sit with her after so you two can discuss. Do your thing, you both are wonderful, and this is fun. good job.
Haha I actually considered it after the video, the song and performance itself was such an experience that I didn't get a chance to mention it during filming :) She
Crazy story...in the summer of 95 i was about to be 18yo and got home from a music fest,i found a VHS that to this day i have no idea how it got in to my bag and it had this concert recorded on it,that is how i got introduced to Tool.
Maynard has said more than once when asked what a specific song means that "it means whatever it means to you." (Something like that). He usually doesn't give a straight answer.
It is entertaining to watch it dawn on you about how all of Tool's music ties together and why it is so compelling for so many people. The depth of meanings (often multiple meanings ) hidden within the songs and then the albums as a whole definitely warrant further investigation. explore the "Holy Gift" aspect of the "Lateralus" album. www.reddit.com/r/ToolBand/comments/hfwct/lateralusholy_gift_sequence/
I know that I'm late but I thought that what I have to share is very interesting due to your theories on religion in regards to this song. One of Maynard's source of inspiration was psychoanalyst Carl Jung, student of Sigmund Freud. Carl Jung shared this theory that indulging in spirituality too much could lead to schizophrenia or some mental illness. What he thought was that people who are schizophrenic cannot separate their subconscious from reality. Almost like it is seeping through. Maynard also uses references to certain "occult" ideas such as alchemy, sacred geometry and hints towards a hermetic like belief. Hermeticism belief holds that spirituality and reality should be balanced. You should have an equal amount of spirituality and realistic thinking. Given all of that, you could say that indulging too much into religion could leave you with a less than sober perspective. I believe that your interpretation fits very nicely.
another great Tool reaction. Why not put the second camera on him? Then we can react to him reacting to you reacting to Tool...can't wait for that bloodhound gang reaction to balance out the 1 to 10 scale as well.. :)
From what I've heard and understood about TOOL's live performances is that Maynard is most often found way in the back of the stage, usually offside and in an unlit area. I have heard this is because he suffers from REALLY bad stage fright and this is one of the rare videos of him in front and center stage. As I understand he moves like that because he is extremely uncomfortable and he has said that to deal with it he picks out a member of the crowd and literally stares them down!
For some reason, every reactor seems to react to the edited version of Sober. Aside from the censorship, this version also has a bunch of weird autotune going on that the original doesn't do. Obviously, it's difficult to get the more "correct" version until you actually hear it, so I get why it happens. But I swear it's all the time. Aside from that, I gotta say, this channel has probably the best and most thorough analysis of Tool's music that I've seen. And I've seen a lot.
I see this album as coming to your senses to the rabbit hole or “Undertow” you’ve put yourself into. Noticing the liars and cheaters, noticing your faults and dark desires and noticing a path to change, then Ænima explores those paths.
The "I'll only complicate you" part, I think, is the power of the shadow indicated at the beginning of the lyrics, which for me is the sum of the shadow of alcohol along with their own "bottled" conscience. I would like to make a "streaming" on the discography of Tool if you guys are ok with that. For me it is the life diary of a person who undertakes a journey starting in the order of ignorance and the dogma imposed on society (opium = dogmatic religion) until its consequences darker. It is the self-observation of this individual and what underlies his life, what the Undertow album inspires me ... like unknown nauseating waters and totally influential in his own life (Undertow = see where all this undertow shadows goes). Now the first triad of records concludes with Ænima, which is the operating room to cure this tangled shit. Ænima is a compound word Anima = Soul and Enima = it is the procedure of introducing liquids into the rectum and colon through the anus, to clean the digestive system, the intestine, etc. This is how to restart the immune system. Once cleansed, purged, drained and purified, this human being has the ability to look at the limitless possibilities of his human and divine aspect, that's where (according to my point of view, of course) the spiritual urgency comes in addition, into LateRaLus = For me it is a word that has many meanings. The word lateral comes from the Latin lateralis, formed by latus, lateris (side, flank) and -alis (-al = relation or belonging), and lus for me is a descendant of the word LUX which means Light in Latin. It is the awakening of someone who has already witnessed his/her shadow and understood and purged it, to open its deepest eyes observing reality and understanding the limitless. The outer Universe without barriers and at the same time the intimate and direct relationship that exists between that reality and that inner Universe where everything Is, and escapes the illusion of being born, growing, maturing and dying. As one of his PARABOL / A songs says "We are eternal, all this pain is an illusion". Each song contains an esoteric and at the same time human path of someone who undertakes a journey upon awakening. The beauty of this work is that it also focuses on the return of the same shadow "expelled and purged" in previous albums, treated in some corridors of this one. In addition to the explanations of the supposed meaning of Lateralus, for me it also has relation with RA, the Egyptian Sun God, since just on the cover of the album Lateralus appears in Syllables as LA TE (RA) LUS, being the monosyllable RA the one that is right aligned with the heart of the image of an enlightened human being. Ra is the all-seeing eye, and on the cover this monosyllable appears below the heart, whose flame contains a spiraling Flaming Eye rising beyond the body edge. I will stop because I think it is a lot of information in a single comment hahaha sorry! It is also something that is based on my feelings and inspiration, that is the beauty of all this, we are all unique and particular beings. A fraternal hug and thank you for rescuing and honoring this music from the art of analysis and spontaneous reaction. I faithfully follow this channel
Nothing to apologise, thank you so much for this as this is exactly what I felt and was trying to put into words on the video (but found hard to) , I feel indeed like it's a life diary and spiritual journey, She.
I'd love to see both of your thoughts on the album Thirteenth Step by A Perfect Circle. If you like journeys, that entire album is an unforgettable ride.
1:58. Obviously, that’s the point of art. Some don’t understand that. The world is full of people that don’t understand art. Science is another tough one for most. It’s hilarious, and sad that those people own most of the earth.
Movements made to mimic a marionette symbolizes the loss of control of oneself feeding the emptiness and selfishness of addiction. I want what I want, I want what I want. This was a song about a friends addiction and his inability to perform or create without it. The only line missing in the live performance was the Jesus line
the existential nightmare-fuel that is maynard live, inhabiting the music...horrifying, powerful, vulnerable and too human. Great analysis -- KEEP GOING>>>
To be fair, she's taking the exact path down the Tool rabbit hole that Maynard and the boys dug. This is how everyone that followed Tool from the beginning experienced them and I think that's great.
It's always interesting to see how the lyrics Maynard had in his notes, which appears to be your source off of toolshed.down.net, are typically a bit different from what he decided to sing on the tracks. The key is that, vs some 3rd party transcriptions, it at least doesn't mess up the meaning of the song, and usually doesn't cause confusion on some commonly misheard words.
Wait till you hit the song Bottom, the beginning of growth, and then two albums later full circle to the song The Grudge, how he first identified and then grew. This whole album is about identifying, the albums that come after are about growth from that
I really love your dialogue on the lyrics. You both have the kind of minds that would really like tool. There are some real masterpieces in this canon. Enjoy the thoughts on this amazingly complex music. You should try out Tool 46 & 2 ua-cam.com/video/YQBYcYYmTlE/v-deo.html
They played the shit out of this song back when this came out. ( 90s) Undertow Album . The pics of the skinny guy being sucked under by a very large women is permanently imprinted in my minds eye
Have a psych degree and love how Maynard's voice and lyrics enhance the musical experience, but to me Tool is mostly about the music. They create such a precise, intricate & tribal soundscape. Unconsciously our brains are counting out the various polyrhythms until they sync up once again. It feels, to me, like they are continually opening a new world that doesn't exist in music except as they create it ......
Sobor is the very 1st Tool song I ever heard. You should see the Mtv video of it. Maynerd has 12 degrees, and he did the claymation for their videos. Watching them brings the songs to a whole 'nother level. Watch the animated version of Right in Two. it's beautiful, itellyoowhut. Btw, yer about as fine as a frog's hair on Aug 15, gurlie 😉
You gotta check the new song "Pneuma" out and see how they progressed over the years, everyone will say check the live drum session out but imo the studio version will be better
Actually, this isn’t from the 1993 Reading festival live. This is the studio version of the song. Maynard takes the “Jesus won’t you F’ing whistle” out of that performance. Replacing it with the “Mother Mary” line.
You reference a lot of Pyschology (Piajet and Erikson) and rightfully so. I was curious if this is your area of study/profession or if it is just an interest that happens to be very relevant to Tool's lyrical content.
Why don’t you give us a little context? How did you get interested in Tool? Where are you from and what other kinds of music were you exposed to before?
Great interpretations! Just curious as an American, what country are you from? I can tell you're from a Germanic country, but are you actually from Deutschland or another country? Again, love your comments!
when tool has its many-times earned due, perhaps the swans might provide another journey through agony to redemption, with a different but not dissimilar bent
You’re starting to get it, it is super deep. But this song is not about addiction. From the first couple songs we know he’s starting to see his faults in a new way, so it’s more like why do I have to be aware of this.
Mother Mary wont you whisper something but the past and done.....to me means why arent they saying anything new...like hes begging for them to talk to him....
Please keep doing them all in order, I am absolutely LOVING this series!!!
Same her ...but boy shhhhh boy I can't wait for culling voices

Nothing to apologise, thank you so much for this as this is exactly what I felt and was trying to put into words on the video (but found hard to) , I feel indeed like it's a life diary and spiritual journey,
She.
@@initum1599 I am impressed by your ability to synthesize these thoughts. And yes! It is very exciting what is coming on this channel :)
Is watching people listen to my favorite band at 5am make me a loser??? GOOD
Awesome reaction as always!
Please try to do parabol¶bola , right in two
Thank you :)
Tool is known for their concept albums
Greetings from México
Love your channel
I'd love to see both of your thoughts on the album Thirteenth Step by A Perfect Circle. If you like journeys, that entire album is an unforgettable ride.
1:58. Obviously, that’s the point of art. Some don’t understand that. The world is full of people that don’t understand art. Science is another tough one for most. It’s hilarious, and sad that those people own most of the earth.
Listen to the Lateralus album in the “holy gift” order
He means being sober from being drunk in the spirit of the lord
Movements made to mimic a marionette symbolizes the loss of control of oneself feeding the emptiness and selfishness of addiction. I want what I want, I want what I want. This was a song about a friends addiction and his inability to perform or create without it. The only line missing in the live performance was the Jesus line
the existential nightmare-fuel that is maynard live, inhabiting the music...horrifying, powerful, vulnerable and too human. Great analysis -- KEEP GOING>>>
He completely inhabits the character and lyrics, his behavior on stage is that of
an individual warped by self-loathing and pain.
Consumed!
Hopefully Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin will happen after the TOOL journey. And what a journey it is. ✌
Not exactly easing her into Tool are ya :P, these are some tough songs for an introduction but she seems to like em, can't wait to see more.
From what I can see, she is handling the journey VERY well.
To be fair, she's taking the exact path down the Tool rabbit hole that Maynard and the boys dug. This is how everyone that followed Tool from the beginning experienced them and I think that's great.
@@psycho42069 exactly! You can't know the struggle it took to get where they are today if you dont start from the beginning.
Wait until you get to their latest album Fear Inoculum. It's a little self-indulging but such an amazing album and so mature.
3 words for you...... Maynard James Keenan.......
That's quite interesting
Sobor is the very 1st Tool song I ever heard. You should see the Mtv video of it. Maynerd has 12 degrees, and he did the claymation for their videos. Watching them brings the songs to a whole 'nother level. Watch the animated version of Right in Two. it's beautiful, itellyoowhut. Btw, yer about as fine as a frog's hair on Aug 15, gurlie 😉
Poor little babies had to listen to the clean version and not even see Adam Jones amazing animation .
More of an interest :)
She
Why don’t you give us a little context? How did you get interested in Tool? Where are you from and what other kinds of music were you exposed to before?
Without sobriety, there can be no vigilance, making one more vunerable to attacks from the outside world
Substance talking, or a battle with those inner demons
Great interpretations! Just curious as an American, what country are you from? I can tell you're from a Germanic country, but are you actually from Deutschland or another country? Again, love your comments!
I interpret it the same as struggling with addiction
when tool has its many-times earned due, perhaps the swans might provide another journey through agony to redemption, with a different but not dissimilar bent
That studio version is the non explicit one... I think it sounds different
Maynard himself told an interviewer that’s about all types of abuse
You’re starting to get it, it is super deep. But this song is not about addiction. From the first couple songs we know he’s starting to see his faults in a new way, so it’s more like why do I have to be aware of this.
Pls hear invincible
Drums r standout on fear inoculum
Maynard murders people with just a stare
Listen to Judith !
So, I've been curious. Are you from eastern Europe, but spent some time in Geordie Shore? Honest query.
We are definetely from Europe :) and yes, spent some time abroad
Why does he say trying whistle?
Mother Mary wont you whisper something but the past and done.....to me means why arent they saying anything new...like hes begging for them to talk to him....
This is a censored version.
