Tool evolved into a multi-tool then into a power-tool, and then into a multi-power-tool. A tool that is truly open to interpretation as to how to use it.

Opiate was 1st release and Undertow was their 1st full album.

They released a demo tape called 72826 before Opiate, tho there's nothing on the tape that isnt on Opiate or Undertow

Yes, jerk-off was on the demo recording...but this is the gritty, raw, dare I say "unrefined" introduction to Tool. However, as raw as this might be you can tell you are listening to something special. And the two live versions are almost as good as anything in the studio...that in itself previews how technically gifted they were even this early on

Opiate is one thing but the real treasure into check their actual live performances of these songs. Jerk-off has an incredible extended live version from 98' where they played this song as the final performance of the night. The extended part they play is just beautiful, only way to describe it.

Yes, the one from 8.25.1998. Maynard also talks about the meaning of the song and how it's misinterpreted.

The songs related to Maynard's mom, Jambi is debatable but I like to include it:
    1. Jimmy - Tool
    2. Momma Sed (live version) - Puscifer
    3. Judith - Perfect Circle
    4. Jambi - Tool
    5. Wings for Marie (1&2) - Tool

One theory is that “The Patient” is from the perspective of his mom.

I've always thought Jambi was about a significant other. That's one of the things I love most about Tool, their songs can have so many different meanings for different people, so it's not necessarily productive (although it is interesting and thought-provoking) to try and find the one true meaning since people can apply the lyrics to events in their own life and come up with their own interpretation that means something deep and personal to them.

Good list, but Jambi doesn't belong - it's about his son and how becoming a father had saved him from a downward spiral and he never wants to be apart from him.
Maynard's mother was very super-evangelical Christian and he was raised that way (which is why you hear a lot of anger against religion, especially in Opiate; "Religion is the opiate of the masses" - Karl Marx). When Maynard was 11, his mother suffered a stroke became paralyzed. Instead of being supported by her church that she had been so devoted to, they ostracized her because their sect believes that anything bad that happens to you must be your fault. So, that's the understanding to start from in listening to the "Maynard's Mother Cycle".
In my opinion, the order of songs is as follows in chronological order of his mother's illness
      1. Jimmy - Tool
      2. Momma Sed - Puscifer (live is a great version, but the original is fabulous too)
      3. The Patient - Tool (said to be written from his mother's perspective)
      4. Orestes - A Perfect Circle (Orestes killed his mother, and this song is about possibly having to "pull the plug" on her life support if necessary)
      5. Judith - A Perfect Circle (song to his mother, chiding her for still being devoutly religious despite the tragedy she'd suffered at the hands of her god)
      6. Wings for Marie (pt 1) and 10,000 Days (Wings for Marie pt 2) - Tool (his elegy for his mother, who finally died after suffering 10,000 days paralyzed, about 27 years)
I hope you continue to enjoy your Tool journey and I am certainly enjoying following along with you and the discussions you have, as well as your enthusiasm for the music and lyrics. I love it! Keep going and stay safe!

This album really spoke to me in my teenage years. It was filled with raw and visceral anger that my teenage angst really resonated with. I always thought this album, Undertow, and to some extent Aenima, really channeled Maynard's rage and anger. Over time that rage dissipated and gave way to the cerebral and ethereal metal sound that Tool is mostly known for today. Plus the album's very end is a nice reminder that the band doesn't take itself too seriously (likely a lesson learned from Melvins, one of the band's influences). Great job digging into this album all in one go.

Thanks for involving the comments guys. Over there I heard one of the comments referring to feeling the music as it feels, without over analyzing it. I think a balance is always the most pleasant thing in art. The excess of info does not allow us to feel and the excess of emotion without finding out a little intellectually about what a work is about may make us lose much of its magic as well. I'm glad you take Opiate. Tool in addition to being an incredible band in every way, it is also a band whose evolutionary level is very notorious, without neglecting (and here comes the magic of this) its roots. Opiate and Undertow are its roots in my opinion. Knowing this part of Tool makes you admire even more the later discs.
Thank you! I really enjoy your videos.

    • @gerardolillo8748

It seems to me that most of the album is a kick in the balls of the Catholic Church. If you look at the cover you can get the idea. -Part Of Me- For example, it gives me the feeling of listening to a priest talking to a devotee. Another example is -Opiate-. All the lyrics seem to be a priest selling Opium to the people; religion, blind faith, the non-questioning of reality, the lack of making decisions and thinking for ourselves.
I wanted to ask you also, if it was possible to react to live videos, not only from Tool but from other bands also.
There is not a lot of good quality live material from Tool, but it does capture the energy, which is impressive.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this but the last songs lyrics are from a comedian named Bill Hicks. I think Maynard was a big fan and that song was a tribute to him. I've been a TOOL fan since 1992 and I've heard all these songs probably a thousand times, and they're epic each and every time I listen to them. TOOL is an experience like no other.

Fun to get a glimpse of growth through the progression of music and lyricism. I think Hush was my first TOOL song before Sober was released. Been a fan ever since. Hard to enjoy other music since, TOOL has been the only band to really provide that intellectual stimulation, requiring me to learn more than what was in my bible. Found out there was a lot more in life than what was written in that book

I just found your channel today and could listen to both of you go on about Tool (and probably everything else) for hours. Your back and forth and the tone of your voices is very relaxing. A quick bit about "Sweat". I'm going to guess it was blocked by Paramount Pictures as it's featured in the movie Escape From LA.
    Looking forward to your journey.

As much as I love their newer albums I think "Opiate" is so underappreciated. It's raw and edgy and you can see the brilliance that's coming together at this early stage. I made a similar comment on another channel's review of the EP and Tool "fans" came out in droves to tell me I was an idiot and that they hated this EP. It really surprised me to get so much hate for liking the album. My favorite comment was when one person told me that it "shouldn't even be considered a Tool album because all the songs are garbage". I still love this thing and play it regularly. Hopefully you guys fare better. Also, as a studio/session musician myself I completely understand the songs being shorter than what we typically expect from Tool. The band was unknown and "untested" so no label is going to put out an EP of 6-9 minute songs. I'm sure they had longer songs but the producer probably told them to keep the recordings shorter. Plus, they evolved quite a bit by their "Undertow" album (their first full-length) and the songs got much longer. Just my two pennies. Stay safe everyone. Cheers.

I appreciate the analysis on each of these videos. I really enjoy seeing someones thinking as well as their feeling. You two are doing a great job. The audio and video quality are good, the content is great. Keep it up.
In terms of "The Gaping Lotus Experience" I think it's a good example of Tool's sense of humor. People doing drugs, doing silly things, loving too much, etc and then the bias against those experiences by society. There's an over reaction our culture has that seeks to label all the drug experiences as an evil "Satan". Of course also it's a tongue and cheek statement about self-indulgent guru's. So on one hand you have a society that dismisses drug experiences as immoral and then on the other hand you have 'gurus' with their heads up their own asses "gaping lotus". Very Tool.

    • @initum1599

(him) to me it also can be read as showing hypocrisy of religions. Religions being in many ways similar to drugs, but drugs being often compared by religious people as "Satan", while many religions hook up their followers in similar way

Bravo! Was waiting for the full album reaction to Opiate, doesn't take long yet..never been done before ty.
I like to think the songs are so short because the lyrics were written then the instrument's were added in.
When they released Third Eye I think Maynard realized he could get deeper if he listened to a finished instrumental track then wrote the lyrics to suit how the track made him feel.
Probably wrong but I love both scenarios anyway haha🤘😁🤘

Part of me is about his penis. Lol. Jimmy, Judith (APC), The Patient, Wings for for Marie pt.1, Wings for Marie pt. 2 (10,000 Days), and a few other from his band Puscifer (Horizons & Potions deliverance mix) are in my opinion the chronological order of songs about his mother and how he felt. I think a few songs from Puscifer reflect about his mother. I havent heard anyone else make that statement especially in the Tool or Puscifer community. Thanks for the video. I enjoyed it.

I will say this before I get your reactions to these... This album is a bit rough but decent. I have to say that as a 25 year tool fan, I only now ever come back to visit this album for the song opiate and then only a live version most of the time. It's not bad though. EDIT: To be fair, it was one of the first songs I heard as a teen that pointed out the hypocracy of organized religion at the time and I latched on as someone sent through private catholic schools early in life.

I suspect that Jerk Off might be about Maynard's father whom I have read was extremely abusive to Maynard. It seems to me that Maynard meant to contrast the highly moralistic and self-righteous "lessons" about right and wrong that his father gave with the hypocritical and awful deeds that his father committed. Maynard then points out that going by the black and white moral world that his father espouses, it might be best for Maynard to just shoot his dad rather than to wait for him to die. I'm not sure whether this is correct; it just seems to make sense to me given Maynard's history.
