Many of you asked me to play through some of these patches using one of my DXs. Here they are in their raw state with minimal outboard processing. Both banks will be available for a short while. See Community posts. And even though I've moved on, you can still check out all of my videos about my Dire Straits synth and keyboard sounds here: ua-cam.com/play/PLMVE1e9C0x_bs3vDty8e0VufRhepyayAu.html ~Hedge
Any info about which chorus (or ensemble?) effect was used on the DX1 "strings" stuff on their album? Boss CE-2 perhaps? Or a Roland SDD-320 "Dimension D"?
These are some good ones. The only info I can recall that pertains to chorus or ensemble effect in any way was Guy and Alan both talking about ensemble effect on Yamaha GS-1. Specifically how difficult it was to simulate with outboard gear when some of the sounds were reprogrammed for the DX1. ~Hedge
Thanks, I have no idea how Hedge programs his sounds. I think in this vid he’s just going through his DX banks and DX wasn’t the only synth used on the album. See videos where he does actual mix reconstruction and reverse-engineering. May be he shows part of the process there. :D
Hey 777, just came from Espin Krafts channel. Any chance I can get your DX7 Dire Straits patches? I was into DS before Brothers In Arms, but that album was pure art! I just subscribed too, looking forward to seeing all of your videos now!!
LOL to me it’s just algorithms, levels and ratios. But if you want preset names. It’s called “SPOTNIKS “ and it’s in the SynprezFM_03 bank that comes with Dexed when you install it. :p ~Hedge
@@Hedge777 Cool, thanks. The reason I asked is I recognize it from old records and particularly Tangerine Dreams Mount Shasta at 0:29 ua-cam.com/video/RiW7Ww2DcYA/v-deo.htmlsi=0O9LPsLfEb7EF9Hx&t=29 And afterwards I learned its a stock preset on some dx synth, not sure which.
Re: 0:29 Mount Shasta. Not a DX preset. An Emulator II sample. Originally sampled from Synclavier II. But it’s a layer of an FM stab and a voice. Very cool. You can hear me use it in my vid here: ua-cam.com/video/5QJItdr7Vcc/v-deo.html Incidentally I also compared it to the DX preset I mentioned earlier. You can hear them side-by-side at 0:19 ~Hedge
@@Hedge777 interesting - thanks a lot! I had a feeling many sounds you hear have a long legacy, reused on many platforms along the way and the origin easily gets obfuscated. Just like Fairlight Arr1 that I once thought was only a Roland JV sample. Synth history...
And I’m sure you’ll recognize this! Another Synclavier II sound that was sampled to death. TD used its sampled EII version for one of their intros. Depeche used the sampled version for their live sets. ua-cam.com/video/wrqnDFCUzBo/v-deo.html At 1:57 if you don’t wanna hear the whole thing. But everyone just refer’s to it as MJ’s “Beat It” sound lol ~Hedge
Yup the DX IS THE 1st and only still have my pair of 2FD”s from 86 NYC studio days and they sit in my rig today wish I had kept my first DX7 but anyway new subscribe ✌️❤️👍

Some great sounds reminiscent of "Brothers in Arms". Did you program these by ear!

I just shared a link to my DX Dire Straits banks in Community posts.

That last patch you played sounds like "Stratocord" if I'm remembering correctly. :) That or "SIXSTRING"
One of them. It’s basically variations of the same patch. One of my favourite sounds for sure. I love to trigger that stuff from my guitar :-)
I looked it up. This particular variant of the patch is called : “SPOTNIKS “. DX at its best!
@@Hedge777 I've always loved the sound of those patches, reminds me of the Invisible Touch album.
It’s definitely the types of sounds that make the DX sound very Synclavier-like.
What a beautiful backdrop, where is this in the world ?
Panama.
looks Spain where I live, Alicante@@Hedge777
Superb. Are all those sounds found in the DX7?
Yup. The DX you see is what you hear. Plus some effects. Not too much :p
@@Hedge777 thank you. I just put some likes on you facebook
Ayo how did you get that data slider to do the chorus??
DX is e-upgraded and the slider is assigned to MIDI volume (CC7). Logic is configured to use CC7 as automation for chorus dry/wet level.
8:00 potentially the best sound a dx can render. I believe it is usually called something like twelve strings in fm context?
