Someone I know bought a Purina for her dog after recommendation from her dog’s vet, who actually sells it. Few days after starting feeding her Cocker Spaniel Purina, she notices that her dog drinks water excessively. A day later her dog urinates blood!! Runs to the vet they “don’t find anything wrong “ but she suspects it has something to do with Purina. The vets won’t even discuss the dog food case. Guess what, right after she stops feeding Purina, the dog is symptom free! That’s just tragic ...Beware people! UPDATE: 4 years after my I first comment , her dog died a couple of weeks ago , still young for its breed, after many operations and treatments for cancer…

Home cooked or raw is better - in my opinion..

    • @BeastWrobel
      @BeastWrobel 5 років тому +13

As long as the raw/homecooked diets are correctly formulated and balanced they're generally better.
However things change when you're making a diet for a cat or dog that isn't healthy. I.e a disease or health issue so the diet needs to cater to that as would a diet cater to growing kittens/puppies.
A big issue with any pet food is how some are not correctly formulated and balanced. That's why a lot of vets say no to raw/homecooked due to how a lot of people believe they can slap together whatever and it's fine. Doing that causes defencies and health issues.
Your pets diet should consider the type (cat, dog, etc) the size, the age (life stage) and general health. You usually cannot apply the same diet to a 4 year old dog/cat as you would to a 14 year old dog/cat.
In general if you're super scared/nervous contact a board certified or PhD nutritionist.
When reading articles check resources and who the author is. Always try and find credible articles with as much science based info as possible.
Pet nutrition can be a complex subject but know you're not alone when it comes to pet owners feeling stressed about this issue.

@@BeastWrobel yeah, thank you its definitely frustrating to be told youre feeding them wrong then to go and make a change to only be told that again lol i just want my dogs to eat healthy and live a fulfilling life ...why is it too much to ask seemingly

    • @BeastWrobel
      @BeastWrobel 5 років тому +5

Sadly it's because it's business. This is an issue even in human food diets and relatively with any business related structure. It's definitely stressful! Lol. Trying to wrap my head around all this information can be a headache.
But I do believe finding a vet that correlates with your value system (for example if you believe in more of a natural approach to your pets seek out a vet whose practice is more holistic) that right there can ease your mind. Finding the right specialists for certain things for the just in case moments can also help. Even if you can't afford a board certified or phd nutritionist just locating one and stuff for future purposes can ease the mind.
Just take it slow. If you are scared and want some tests done to see if your cat or dog might have dcm you can get a taurine test done to see if your pet is defecent in that and also a echo. DCM is only seen through echos. If you see physical signs of DCM it's generally too late to fix it.
What I've decided to do is just take basic scientific based guidelines on cat and dog nutrition requirements and understanding what the ingredients (especially in commercial food) mean. Then applying that across the board to see what I can afford while giving my pets a good balanced diet.
However I am not a vet, nor board certified nutritionist I'm just a animal lover who enjoys her research. So when in doubt find a vet that lines up with your values and take his/her advice and if need be get a taurine test and echo done if you think they might be deficient and or might have DCM.

Also by products from LAND FILLS! My cats got a horrible skin disease from eating Purina and Little Frisky's cat food! The FDA are LIARS! They are bought and paid for by the big corporations and are nothing but their mouthpieces! I would believe the EXACT OPPOSITE of anything the FDA says! The FDA barely cares about human risks so not a good idea for anyone to hold their breath waiting for eat FDA to save the day. This story and the rich history of contamination and deficiency in commercial kibble should teach all pet parents that the onus is on each individual pet owner to educate themselves and to do better for their pets. The internet has made it possible for pet owners to exchange information and that has resulted in a boom in natural feeding and companies producing fresh raw and cooked pet food options vs. species inappropriate kibbles. The huge pet food corporations want to shut down this free exchange of information as it interferes with their false and dangerous propaganda and advertising.

My biggest concern about all of this is it is not a true picture of all dogs eating specific diets. This is a small amount in a large pool of pets. Generally people who can afford the higher end kibbles also have the disposal income to take their dog to the vet for even the slightest sign of illness. People who feed the lower end kibbles usually have less disposal income and have to wait either until the dog is really sick, or the dog passes without being seen by a vet. (I am not saying that everyone with less disposal income does this, but not everyone can afford a $500 echogram for their dog). This means dogs dying of dcm on cheap kibble may not be being reported. DCM is also seen in humans. If it is not caused by heart disease, such as in younger individuals it is many times caused by a virus. Not always one that presented itself as harmful. I worry they are not seeing the forest for the trees and that the diet is clouding them from truly researching all eliminates that would be playing a role in this disease.

Purina, hills, iams, eukabana, and another one follow WSAVA guidelines while a lot of these other pet food companies do not. Some don't even have proper board certified nutritionist and or research facilities.
The brands I listed have passed all guidelines set by vets to make sure they are properly made.
There's still more companies out there that pass the wsava but those are the ones I know of.
Fromm dog food company hasnt had a research facility since the 90s and only has 1 master degree nutritionist on board. They need a board certified nutritionist and a research facility to verify that the food they're sending out is correctly balanced and formulated for dogs.
Transparency is an issue with any business world. Human food and dog food. If you're skeptical you can get an echo done on your dog and if there's no signs of DCM then you dont have anything to worry about. Larger dogs are more susceptible to DCM than small breeds but I'm not taking a risk. I rather go with brands that pass multiple guideline standards rather than just something that looks good and is overpriced.
Nonethless check out WSAVA website if you're more interested. They even have PDFs that are full of questions you should ask food companies to see if they follow WSAVA and or are moving towards that.

I don’t remember the vet using this exact diagnosis but she had an enlarged heart (they showed me the X-ray, it was huge!) and congestive heart failure. In the end I made the very hard decision to have her put down because of an additional problem that medicine wouldn’t treat.. kidney failure. We changed what we feed our other dogs after that because I was suspicious. (before any of this news came out) I’m still heartbroken. One of my other dogs has congestive heart failure now.. I’m going to ask the vet if he could have this too. Thank you for informing people about this. It’s awful when you spend extra money for food that you think is better for them and it kills them. 😢😭

My 15yo Ridgeback died in March of heart failure. The last half of her life she ate whatever she wanted. When she was younger I was very careful about what she ate and had to fight with her constantly to get her to eat it, but then I stopped stressing her out and just let her eat what she liked. These were not the best foods out there, but they were ones she enjoyed. She also ate a lot of human food- lots of veggies and tofu- whatever i was eating, which was pretty healthy for people but not always. She loved rice and sweet potatoes, so I always cooked extra for her. Granted, most dogs are not so stubborn about food, but she really was and I don't think the super healthy diet was a good trade-off for mealtime wars and depression of her unique personality. She had no health issues until the very end. She lived 15 years. I don't think you can ask for more than that. One thing is not good for all dogs and surely happiness is a huge factor in staying healthy. At any rate, I don't think feeding a dog 1 thing all the time is good for them no matter how expensive the food is. ETA: Interestingly enough, she never cared for beans or peas. If I put those in her bowl she would leave them.

@@maryw3989 what kind of things did u present to her. Dogs can be super fussy. Which if I'm honest is usually human error. We tend to get to involved at feeding time and dogs are fantastic at making a fuss if the owner allows that. Problems occur because of it. My friend switched his Yorkie to raw it wasn't easy for him because he put raw down and didn't eat it straight away so he felt bad and made scrambled eggs. Now that's the worst thing you can do. The dog had him under their thumb. What he should have done was leave the food and if didn't eat then take away and don't offer scraps or treats. Dogs can survive days without food so it does no harm then we are the ones that cause behaviours in dogs. Now that Yorkie is doing great on raw and loves meal time. And my friend no longer gives crap treats like dentastix and smacko and his dog is in lean shape Great coat great teeth no issue at all with him anymore.so I guess what I'm saying is keep trying. It's you that have come to decision your dog don't like raw.which is highly unlikely it's just a learned behaviour to get the foods she wants.

As I stated below in a reply, I just read that DCM has also been found in some dogs who eat only raw or homemade diets, so don't think that's safe for them. Also, DO NOT just start supplementing with taurine, assuming they are low on it if they've been eating one of the named grain-free diets. 90% of the dogs were not low on taurine, so just assuming that they are and giving them additional may actually put them at risk for developing other issues. You need to have your vet test their taurine levels first and give them the amount they advise based on their specific levels.

Hey Doc, according to another video I saw (with Doctor Coger, DVM), commercial pet food companies are using less meat protein in grain free foods. They are substituting even more plant based (legumes, potatoes, pees, etc.) proteins instead of the meats because it is a cheap substitute and you get a higher protein percentage. However, the amino acids such as methionine, leucine, and taurine are not sufficient to support dog health. Doesn’t this sound like the taurine deficiency problem that existed for cats back in the 80’s? Just great. Complete and balanced.

Latisha Wing dogs are like people. They have their preferences in food (as well as sensitivities). I have 3 dogs and each has sensitivities. All three can’t have anything with wheat, wheat gluten, or corn. One of my dogs can’t have anything with beef. I found this out by completely cutting out commercial dog food. I cooked for them for a while, now I feed raw. No more problems. Used to have bloody, mucus stool. Sometimes they would vomit. I was at my wits end. Taking them off all commercial, including treats was the best thing. I give them freeze dried treats or something fresh out of the refrigerator as a snack.

The stew beef I get from Costco, I freeze and wait for a few weeks before I feed that. Everything is corrupted. Food, water, air, soil. It's getting difficult to know what to eat myself.

The foods that are listed in this report, with the exception of Rachel Ray, are all hyper-premium brands, and are in a category of pet food that most of the massive pet food companies do not even offer a product. Also, every single major per food company offers grain-free pet foods at this point and has for years.

Sorry but I totally disagree with your thoughts as well as recommendations. First the foods listed have NOT been linked there are "potentially" linked which is not the same. Second, the you need to read before your recommend. I really like your recommendations for home remedies but this list is only the kibble issues. The full list posted with the report lists RAW as well as home made, as well as Vet diets, as well as just about anything you would feed your dog. So you could conclude that "all" foods should not be feed because they can cause DCM which is silly. Third and most important, a report is not a study. The FDA could have easily paid for a true 3 - 6 month study to answer the question if Legumes and vegetables such as sweet potatoes block taurine production but they haven't in over 3 years. Why not? A simple test of feeding dogs a grain diet from any of these brands for 1 month, testing the taurine levels then feeding those same dogs from the same brands a grain free formulas for another month or two and then recheck their taurine levels. This would either prove or disprove your studies hypothesis. Fourth, don't you want to know whether or not the answer to that question is true or false before you advise to add additional carbs or cost of a diet?
The most confusing part of this issue is that the FDA continues to report the possible link when the doctors who reported the issue to the FDA back in 2017 are now stating that they can NOT prove any linkage? This past December 2018 the same scientist, who brought the issue forward to the FDA, put out their additional findings after almost 2 years of investigation. Here is a quote from that report. “Notably, however, some dogs improved after a diet change from one grain-free diet to another, and this finding, along with the differences identified between dogs fed various BEG diets, suggested that DCM was not necessarily tied to the grain-free status of the diet.”
    avmajournals.avma.org/doi/pdf/10.2460/javma.253.11.1390
During that same time period a study published to PLOS One and linked to National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), by the same group of scientist stated “Finally, many dogs in this study were consuming not only less than their predicted needs based on calculated MER ranges, but also less than the manufacturer’s feeding directions indicated.” Basically if your dog doesn’t eat enough food, they will not produce proper levels of taurine.
In that same study they were also quoted with this Conclusion “Certain diets and diet characteristics were associated with the development of taurine deficiency. Taurine deficiency and dilated cardiomyopathy in golden retrievers is likely multifactorial, including a combination of dietary, metabolic, and genetic factors.”
    www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6292607/

I'm still astounded that people even rely 100% on pre-packaged & canned foods at all?
It's well known there's no regulatory food laws on pet food here in Australia - anyone who solely feeds a "big business packed, by-product" to their pet, would be feeding sadly deficient "food".
My best mate, of 15 yrs crossed his bridge last month. He always had lamb/beef/chicken, liver, kidney, hearts, even tripe thrown into his food.

Andy PLEASE do more and put a spotlight on this topic. Pet food needs to be regulated. I stand with you! Without naming companies, I have lots to say on this topic. Stop feeding immediately if your pet is having any issues, vomiting chewing on legs etc. They can’t communicate other then not eat it. Most pets trust you have their best interest. Imagine if this was a human life instead of a pet. They are not valued. When the surgeon tells you the reason why your dog has cancer is due to dog food, lawn fertilizers and chemicals, or backyard breeding, it might be too late.

My dog tore both knee ligaments. One knee had the lateral suture technique, TWICE. the first time the suture was so stretched out so they did it the second time. Her other knee I took her to a board certified surgeon to get a TPLO done and she has done tremendously so far. Good luck! You can join the Facebook group Canine Cruciate Repair group.

Also high in heart. I make my dogs food out of beef heart, chicken livers, beef, kelp, brewers yeast, mackerel, eggs and homemade raw kefir, dried parsley and maca root powder. Sometimes turkey or chicken and bone broth gets in there. Mix it all up, dehydrate like jerky. Cut into bits, store airtight. She loves it! Very healthy and strong.
She despises peas and all legumes---will carefully pick them out of my leftovers.
None of my dogs has ever cared for peas. I think all legumes and grains are tricky foods for both humans and canines (our digestive systems are surprisingly similar).

I have posted a lengthy, scientific comment on this topic below. But, in summary, I should say that the moral of this story is that no dog should be fed the same brand/formula exclusively because that is too risky. That said, a better take home message is that there is no such thing as a complete and balanced, shelf stable dry food. Please watch parts one and two of Dr. Karen Becker's interview with Steve Brown, founder of Steve's Real Food For Dogs. Steve is a dog nutrition expert and explains the the lack of essential fatty acids and the rancid stuff in commercial kibble.

Hello, Doc. I had heard Science Diet was about the worst dog food one could give a dog, ; that was what had been recommended by the Vet.( I mixed with the canned Sci Diet).
Well I stopped with all of that brad completely and have been giving NutiSource by KLN family brands. Have not seen 'peas or lentils' listed in the Lamb Meal & Rice Formula.
As far as adding wet to this, I have picked up some grain-free Duck,Turkey & Turkey Liver Protein.
Whe she gets just dry, I add CBD oil,,drop on 5 or so drops ,and pump on some fish oil (Grizzly Salmon Oil). But I give her eggs and cooked chicken and stuff like that once in a while, also. Honey and peanut butter or almond butter for fun. Anyways,
The dry kibble of Nutri Source..It doesn't say grain free..this one has oats, barley, lamb meal, white n brown rice, beets sun-dried mengden fish meal, etc. Boy, ya know it doesn't 'sound' bad..!!?? Sure love your videos, and your work you have done, putting together all this info for us! Much thanks, Dr. Andrew!

so what the hell is this? one statment suggests some type of toxicity related to legumes and lentils. another statement suggests it's amino acid deficiency.
and apparently 10 cases of heart disease (in hundreds of thousands of consumers) is enough to form a correlation???
