Knowing Toyota, they will not produce anywhere near enough unit to meet demand. This shortage will cause bidding wars with wealthy elites paying $10,000 or more over MSRP, and dealerships will do shady things to capitalize. Miata is in absolutely no danger.

    This car won't leave Japan.
Even if it did, it won't successfully compete with the MX5, nothing ever has.

Tell how this Suzuki competes with the MX5? Looks are in the eye of the beholder, but this thing is fuck ugly. Will it be cheaper than MX5? Will it out perform it? Never mind the fact that the Mx5 has a cult 35 years in the making.
If this car came out 25+ years ago, then maybe it would have a chance, but not in this market.
Plus how many bangers does Toyota have if you don't count the BMW and Subaru? I guess that new Prius looks kinda cool

@KidNato as mentioned in the video. The sfr won't be using the suzuki drive train. So we can't look at it from that angel.
And The miata has a massive cult status, even if the toyota is amazing it won't be able to break that.
And I'll count things like the GT86, And Supra. But those 2 along side the GR corolla and GR yaris? Banners.

Every time I see the RF, I think "dude, if I were rich and could have every toy out there, I would effing get Miata just for the looks!".
S-FR - a cute quirky looking toy car that I'm sure many grandmas will love... Having said that, I see Miata is very popular among middle-aged women in the UK (I don't know why, it's just most of the time I look at the driver, it's a middle-aged woman!), so a convertible version of that cutesy quirky SFR may just be a hit over in the UK.

I legit wanted a Mustang or Nissan Z but fuel cost and CO2 would kill me, so thought I'd settle on the GR86. NOT. Only up to 500 cars imported to the UK, allocated by lottery or something, no longer sold - thanks, EU!
EU is also killing the 2 litre Miata! Because it's producing too much CO2 for the weight category it's in! What?? But there's no problem with 3-row SUVs that are emitting much more -- heavier cars are allowed to emit more. WHAT???
I have no hope for this SFR or any other new enthusiast car. It's official: new sports car is dead in Europe.

Why would anyone want 150 turbocharged HP in a S-FR when you get 181 naturally aspirated horsepower in the MX-5? If it's not going to beat the MX-5 on powertrain, then in what way will it be better? I think it's unlikely that a Suzuki platform will be better than the MX-5 in terms of handling characteristics and suspension.
To summarize, I think it either has to be cheaper than an MX-5 or it needs to include the GR-Corolla 1.6 l turbo tuned to make at least 225 HP for a similar price (USD$35k) to a top trim MX-5.

I don’t think any roadster can dethrone the MX5 unless Mazda ruins their formula on the 5th generation, though I don’t really expect them to do so. I definitely think Toyota can take a piece of their market share with their own 2 seat manual rwd car, and I’m confident whatever they produce will be a great car as long as it’s got a Toyota designed motor. I’ve owned an NA Miata for over 7 years, and I’ll gladly buy this new S-FR when it comes to market, cause I’ve been drooling over it ever since I first saw it in Gran Turismo 7

Yeah, man... Toyota, stop using other company engines! Supra turned out alright, but Subaru 86 engines are a shame when all is said and done, in both gens (1st gen horrendous torque dip, 2nd gen - instead of actually fixing engine design, they just threw at it more power and as a result, it's too thirsty for a 4-popper, in a lightweight car at that!). And now Daihatsu? Daihatsu who?? I've only seen commercial trucks and such by Daihatsu. I'm not confident in their ability to make a good engine - FOR A SPORTS CAR. And sure as hell I don't expect it to be Toyota-reliable. It'll be another disappointment like that 86, a huge compromise.

I agree that Miata needs a competitor -- one that offers a coup! I'm kinda thinking MAYBE settling for an ND RF, but man, I want some usability out of my car. I don't care about the convertible stuff. So it's a tough pill to swallow thinking that the whole convertible mechanism eats up the valuable storage space (in a car that doesn't even have a glovebox!) AND screws up rear visibility. In other words, a coup competitor to Miata would REALLLY kick Miata's ass.
Having said that, if that thing ends up looking like this, I'd rather deal with Miata's storage space and visibility compromise because I want my sports car to be satisfying to look at, and I consider Miata RF a gorgeous looking car.

One could even argue that even power isn't really a necessity for a sports car, look at the first generation Miata. What does sell a sports car is looks and handling. It seems like the SFR will be a great handling car and beauty is in the eye of the beholder so maybe there is a market for it.
