- Late Kick Live Ep 534 features Josh Pate discussing the balance of power in the Big Ten. With Jim Harbaugh gone can Ohio State reclaim the Big Ten or could Michigan and/or Oregon take the crown? Will we see tier-1 teams emerge this season forming a lead pack? Will UGA, Ohio State, Alabama, Oregon, and Texas indeed separate? Bold predictions are back with the wildest things you believe about this season. Will LSU make the CFP? Could the balance of teams in the CFP be more evenly dispersed than expected? What if Wisconsin crashes and burns this season? Maalik Murphy has a bright spotlight on himself as well. Ryan Day also joins the show as we continue coverage from Big Ten Media Days. All that plus a look at the best running game in the country, some Quinn Ewers conversation, and Josh’s much-anticipated review of Twisters. Way to go Josh, you had a politically correct answer when it comes to who a villain is....YES Texas is a villain because they use their money to make them a top 5 team....YES deion Sanders is a villain. He took half his roster from his HBCU college leaving them high and dry without any good talent. Then he goes to Colorado and has kids leave the program cuz of his arrogance and his favoritism to his old players. He doesn't recruit the only uses of transfer portal. He dresses like a clown. He talks a lot of crap that he can't back up. So yeah, let's call village villains and stop putting everything just on these corporations. That's an easy out Josh, stop playing it safe
Prime will be gone before long. once his son moves on he may stay year or so but he will leave when his lack of recruiting shows. it's hidden with qh play now.... total years for prime at Colorado.... 5 or less.
Texas isn't good enuff to be a villain. The Texas hype machine is great but they aren't 😅important in the. ig picture. as soon as, something goes bad Texas shows themselves. 1 loss rolls into 3 ...
Paul Finebaun is the villian
😂 agreed 💯 👍🏾
He tries really hard to be. So far, I think the only person he has had a major impact on was Kiffin at USC, and that honestly changed his career trajectory a full 180 degrees back in a positive direction. And now he’s doing an outstanding job coaching and recruiting a much better team every year, in a significantly harder conference situation, than anything USC has managed to do since Paul’s FinnaBum got his ass fired out of there. He hasn’t put it all together yet, but that could very easily start to change now that there are no East & West divisions in the SEC, on top of the obvious difference that came with that conference change up, Sabans retirement. He doesn’t have to worry about winning the west, by way of beating Saban, or even just by beating Bama now, because there is no East/West. It’s just straight up W/L record and who the losses were to and who the wins were over, comparatively to any teams with similar records. And even still, he may not even need to play in the conference championship game to slide his way into the playoff bracket now. As a Bama fan I’ve always really liked Kiffin. He kinda talks himself into a situation where he gets beat into a corner sometimes, but I think that’s part of why I like him. You might beat him into a corner this year. But he’s gonna come out saying just as much next year and when he’s got his team humming along, they can be a damn handful sometimes.
PAWL!!
Paul FineBum is the dancing clown puppet of the villain.
Finebaum has just leaned into the unhinged role ever since Saban retired 😂 but I would also throw out general media rēt🅰️rds like Skip, Stephen A., Cowturd, etc. Those guys were the loudest ones championing a playoff and later expanding it; meanwhile, they never gave a rat’s ass about CFB.
Black shirt josh is definitely the villain
That's tuff 😂
Came for THIS comment!
Bring back BLACK SHIRT JOSH and rip terrible takes after the season plays out!
Can we as the Pate State fan base recruit and get the show to 300k subscribers before the season begins? Outstanding work as always to the late kick team.
If DeBoer and Sheridan can help Milroe elevate his game, I can't image a world where he's not at the very least a Heisman finalist.
Love this comment I’m an auburn fan and hate the bull shit we do abt arguing abt recruits currently when the state of Alabama at a whole has never been better at football recruiting wise Troy and UAB included I’m just ready for the competition and I think your 100% right I’d love to see what they do but also the saban staff did take a minute to adjust to Milford style so I wanna see if kalen can hit it right off the bat if he can scary years ahead for the rest of cfb
@@JamesWard-tu9mrI personally feel like it was Tommy Reese pushing Saban trying to get him to let him play that sorry ass QB who followed him down from Notre Dame, just because he was more familiar with Tommy’s system. I think that’s why Saban didn’t start Milroe the week after the loss to Texas. I think he let the Tommy have what he kept asking for and let the kid start and play 3/4 of the game against SFU, where I think he might’ve completed like 4 passes in 3/4 of a ball game with the level of talent on Alabamas offense. Then after 3/4, Saban pulled that kid and put his own 2nd string QB Ty Simpson in the game to prove his point to Tommy about why the hell his little tag along buddy was never going to be the starting QB for Alabama, as long as he was alive and had to watch the games. If you go back and watch the games after that SFU game, suddenly it started looking like the coach was focussing more on learning how to adapt and coach his offense, to fit with the players on the field. Instead of trying to shove a bunch of square pegs in round holes, by expecting the crap he got away with at Notre Dame, to slide at a place like Alabama. And week after week you could literally see him making these sudden realizations, step by step, eventually leading to having an explosive offense that was built to the players strengths, like it’s supposed to be. That was probably a good part of why Saban chose to go ahead and retire. He had to do more coaching, just to coach his damn OC on how to be an OC, while already having to be the head coach and making sure his defense was doing right. He said he didn’t mind helping somebody along the way, but if he was gonna have to coach the offense and the OC, on top of everything else, he was getting too old to be wanting to deal with all that much unnecessary extra work, trying to coach a coach on how to be a coach, when he already had to coach the whole team, because the coach he was teaching didn’t have a clue how to do the job he said he could do. 😂😂
Saying a team that wins a lot is not a villain is the most “I’m not a fan of a team, I’m a fan of the sport” take of all time.
As a Notre Dame fan, I don't believe conference championship losers deserved to be punished. The Irish don't deserve to leapfrog a team who played in that game. That is the price of independence.
Appreciative on the reflection, I do think though Notre Dame could make it in that top tier 5-8 and the extra income of hosting an extra playoff game is pretty lucrative and a positive that I am sure the Athletic Department are fine with. Especially considering what we were talking about in terms of conference title losers or teams that sneak into the playoff have a fanbase that would travel to South Bend.
That makes sense.
Agreed. ND making it in 2012 was the big story, but UGA falling below Florida after losing the SEC title and thus missing a BCS bowl was the real snub. UGA BEAT Florida to make that game!
Conferences are ridiculously over valued.
ND probably wouldn't jump the loser of the SEC or Big10 championship game, but would absolutely jump the other 2. I'm not a ND Homer but they are better than any team in the ACC or Big12... especially if they are 11-1 or 12-0.
Jalon Daniel's cooks the big 12 and goes 11-1 in the regular season and leads kansas to a playoff bye and heismab trophy, boom.

SEC bias is the villain
I could definitely see a world where 2025 USC has a conundrum like 2020 Bama where they have both a QB and a WR in New York. If Lynn works out, and Lincoln Riley gets two years to develop Miller Moss, USC could be a contender to deep into the playoff next year, and that would probably coincide with Miller Moss and Zachariah Branch forming one of the great dynamic duo's of the decade so far

Same thing for BAMA and Georgia. People keep saying Georgia runs the sec now but what’s their record vs bama. lol I’ll wait….
Sit down clown
First off we didn’t say we run the sec but bama Anit running it without saban no more
Bama isn’t winning a sec championship no more
@@Ghost_618nation you’re right . They’re running it with Kalen DeBoer now… and you’ll still take a backseat in Atlanta every year.
best college football show on youtube! cant wait for the season
i agree. pate state loves the game. not a certain team or conference like espn
The man got an SM7B! Thank you Josh🙏🏻
Every year a preseason top 10 team finishes the season unranked and a preseason unranked team finishes in the top 10
My heismon winner is Grayson McCall from nc state. I’m an FSU fan
IF USC has a really good season, watch Zachariah Branch. That dude has the potential to take over games when the ball is in his hands. he has versatility and can hurt you as a returner, too. I think he really posesses the kind of ability where a huge year could result in him winning the heisman like Devonte Smith. Probably that would be next year if it happens, but just keep an eye on him. being at USC naturally gives him an edge up
Josh had an interesting take when he asked for input on “villains in College Football. Josh is a pro and has no problem looking at the “sport level.” But remember most fans (not all) are SHAMELESS HOMERS” and totally incapable(unwilling) of objectivity. So for a huge percentage of fans, any team that beats their team has a coach and players who are all villains. Kirby Smart and Ryan Day are “villains” for that reason just like Nick Saban was for 17 years at Alabama - remember several SEC teams never beat a Saban coached Alabama 😊team and Tennessee was 1-16 against Saban’s Alabama teams and that one regular season win instantly became THE BIGGEST WIN IN PROGRAM HISTORY even though they won the 1998 National Championship with Phillip-Fat-fulmer.
I would rephrase that last sentence. It was one of the biggest wins yes, but TN's '98 natty was their biggest win
Sports betting ads are the villain of college football
No, actually more people will be educated on the sport if they betted in small amounts or even made picks without betting. All the “you are what your record says” people don’t bet.
I can see Oregon going undefeated this year in the regular season
😂
As a kstate fan, go get that heisman Will Howard. Motivation bro seems like everybody doubting you. Big 12 champion
Subscribed LIKE from Kingston, TN
Without playing in a championship game, Notre Dame should never get higher then 9th place in the rankings for the playoffs.
That's just stupid... ND is better than any team in the Big12 or ACC right now and better than most of the SEC and Big10. Being a conference champion doesn't mean jack if your conference isn't that great.
Honestly Utah would beat ND
Abilene Texas here
shoutout from Amsterdam
Love Academy!
Ole Miss is about to be the villain for the SEC
12-team college playoff field decided after regular season. Only seeding is determined after championship weekend. Thoughts? I see no downside. CCG winners get a bye. Losers don't have to worry about being removed from the field. Means teams have to play the full 12 game season to give their team best shot at making playoffs.
Mr. Pate, we should have a Pate State discord server.
why? discord is just a place for noobs and pros when it comes to computers and the noobs just get hacked by the pros.
DO NOT link your main email to discord and not monitor while you run.
discord is stupid af imo
I happen to agree with you that the
12-team playoff cheapens the regular season. But since its novelty will dominate the discussion this year, how about:
"The Cheaper by the Dozen Tour."
I like them including +2000 weigman in the top 10, but not +2000 Leonard, to get an extra SEC player in the top 10 🙄
Jaxson Dart for Heisman
Ohio State villain conversation: they trademarked the word "The"...that's all you need to call them the villain
WVU wins the Big 12 and wins a CFP game. Lets Go Mountaineers!
This is the year of the rebels
Have to disagree with JPs take on saying how it’s not Deion it’s how he’s covered. Last year before the season with Deion it was “we coming”then they beat TCU, Nebraska, Colorado St and all the sudden it was “we here” then they got a dose of reality from Oregon then he reverts back to “oh yall better get us now” then they go 4-8 so yes it’s partially on how Deion is covered but let’s not act like he doesn’t talk his fair share and can’t help it.
Edit: excuse me he didn’t have the decency to say US when saying “yall better get us now” he said ME “yall better get me now” gave him too much credit I forgot he’s all about himself
Hoboken Ga up in here.
Josh would you say last years Michigan was elite? there wasn't really a huge gap between them and Washington or Texas in terms of point spread, and even Bama almost beat them and Georgia would still have been a point spread favorite over Michigan on a neutral field at the years end, but it just felt like Michigan was on another level and they obviously had NFL players all over the field.
Texas, ND. Period. Texas didn’t want to share with the rest of the bigxii and then joins the sec who splits everything equally. ND doesn’t play a legit schedule, doesn’t play a title game. These are and always will be the cfb villains
Are you the villian today??...

Nobody is asking the really scary question, which is, what if a 4-5 loss team wins their conference championship? It's come close to happening in the Big 12 and Pac 12 in somewhat recent memory (UCLA made the PAC-12 title game about 6-8 years ago at 7-5). I know that conference isn't around anymore, but especially in the Big12 or ACC, you could have enough chaos that the 2nd place team is a 4-5 loss team and gets into the title game because of tiebreakers...what happens if they end up winning? Are they really worthy of an AQ spot?
AQ bids without qualifiers are great until something like that happens, and the EVERYONE will be complaining. IMO, AQ bids should have had a qualifier built in that you have to win your league AND have 3 or less losses. Otherwise, you're not guaranteed that 4th AQ spot. 🤷♂️ There's no way a 9-4 conference champ should get a bye and an AQ spot over a 2 loss at large from a deeper conference.
Wait until 9-4 K-State wins the Big12 and gets the #4 seed and a bye, while 10-2 Alabama has to play the quarterfinal against like, Clemson or Penn State or another SEC team, and wait til you hear the b*tching and complaining from every podcast.
Josh you are right I am retired and on social security and can't afford ticket to Alabama games any more. A sad situation but all about greed.
Jalen Milroe will win the heisman this year
Omaha nebraska
People have to realize, lsu defense will be “better” (how much is the question), and they have one of the easiest SEC schedules this year. Bama and ole miss at home, at ATM… if they go 1-2 in those 3 they probably have a 10-2 record.
Somebody watched Remember the Titans on his vacation haha
CFB BOLD PREDICTION: Josh is related to Mario Cristobal.
Going into a new conference is very difficult just ask Nebraska 😂 they sure did talk that trash at first but not so much anymore. Oregon will most likely have a loss to Ohio state or Michigan or both.
How could you, Pate State, call the BigXII “Americas conference” yet not go to their media days?🤨
Deion is a good dude...just a bit impatient as a coach. Shouldn't have so many transfers. He should coach them up not give up on his players
It completely depends on how many losses a conference's championship game loser has compared to ND, in order to answer the question of if they drop below ND.
If ND is sitting there at 11-1, is that _________ schools first or second loss? Or is it their third or 4th? Because if that loss makes them 10-3 or 9-4, they should be below ND, because you have less wins and more losses. Yeah you had to play ONE more game than they did, but that doesn't magically translate into the 2 extra losses you had (if ________ team is 10-3 for instance).
Monetary greed is the villian
Teams cheating using sign stealing and breaking into internal competitors web portal.
Osu has villainous behavior if you’re either of the UM fans
Someone knock the Just For Man out of Ryan Day’s hand please.

if rayola turns the team around single handidly.
i dont think he has the mental maturity too.
3 teams in year because he had to earn a spot at #1 qb? not a good look
I would say Danny Kanell is the villain, or at least tries to be
Oregon is the villian
In what way? If they’ve never won a title then are they preventing anything from happening? Also there are very few CFB fans in the west half of the country
@@RadicallyOptimistic They are using the texas AtM NIL recruiting tactics to dip into everyones recruiting grounds lol. We dont like that.
Meanwhile unlike the “vaunted” SEC, Notre Dame doesn’t schedule a bunch of D2 FCS teams to play and call that a 13 game schedule.
ND would be an 8-9 win team in the SEC with 2-3 cupcakes.
@@thegardenhutch5833 give me a fucking break. That’s why you guys got smoked by the ACC 2 years ago in the bowl games.
@@derekjancart215 - I suppose I would also be overly emotional if I knew I was wrong. ND is a good team, on par with LSU maybe. They are not special or great. Their schedule is also above average but nothing overly difficult. Perhaps ND’s problem is, like you, they are soft and insecure.

Josh are we getting an interview with Lanning on Thursday?
I doubt it. He'll probably have Ohio st OC & DC. Lord knows he was just up in Columbus just the beginning of last month to interview Ryan Day. So you would think since Oregon was the the only top 10 team he didn't visit this off season, he would interview Lanning, but no.
He wont admit it but he can’t stand Oregon winning being from rural Georgia. Most CFB journalists are from that region. Colin Cowherd is the only one who respects the West and the North
I have a problem with the kids at Colorado thinking they’re all of a sudden hot shit.
Deion let one of his players go talk shit to the Oregon players instead of warming up. That was a bit much
If you bet Howard, Cook, or ANY of those Big 12 QBs, you are burning you money. The Big 12 just will not have a team good enough to have the Heisman winner. If you arent in the SEC in todays world your team must win 11 games or more to have a shot at the hesiman
Thank goodness? Referring to 16 minutes in when you was talking about fall coming back. You said thank goodness. Did your TV network tell you to stop saying god josh?
DJU will be a higher Heisman pick than Cam Ward.
Ward went to Miami to pad his stats. DJU went to FSU to hep them win games.
LOL what are you talking about. You act like you know either of these guys and you of course do not. That being said it isn't news that cam were chose the Hurricanes for the paycheck plain and simple. And also it was reported he wanted to have the best chance to utilize a chance at being drafted, because he's a fringe NFL guy. DJ is more or less doing the same thing if we're being honest but both kids are objectively Class Acts who are trying to secure their future financially. Don't be a weird fan

The villans of CFB is USC when they are a contender. The hate across the Country revs up when USC comes around as arrogant as they are. USC. I love it because I am a USC die hard fan. but I know of the hate. Like during the SEC press conference what did the SEC's favorite puppet kept talking about, Paul Finebottom? He kept talking about USC and Lincoln Riley. Why? because he hates a program that can come back and become what it was in the 2000s..
Ole miss isn’t sniffing a natty ever
don't say ever. the right moves now could get em there in a few year.
nil means alabama isnt the only team paying players. different now
No hatred towards Penn St but how can they be a tier 1? They never beat Michigan or OSU and only beat the terrible teams in the conference. There is something to be said about taking care of business out of conference and beating teams you are supposed to beat but if you are never in the top 2 before, how can we say they will be top tier with Oregon now in there. Oregon is also a team that underperforms against top competition but at least they make it to title games. I would say Penn St is tier 2 at best but also at worst. The rest of the old Big10 was really bad.
First, I should preface that I am a College Football fan first and Texas A&M Football fan second. I would respectfully add one topic to consider moving forward for all Big10 and SEC teams is the impact of NO divisions in those conferences anymore. While the SEC West was definitely the harsher division than the SEC East, there have always been a few SEC East teams (most recently Georgia, and earlier Florida, with Tennessee as a consistent solid player) that make that division no pushover either. The same cannot be said about the Big10. Since the Big10 instituted the most recent division setup (East and West divisions established for 2014 season) Big10 West division has not had a perennial heavyweight team capable of consistently beating out of conference and/or post-season opponents. Wisconsin comes the closest to that mark, but was definitely not consistently good from 2014 to present whereas Penn State definitely has been good nearly every season. Consider that in 2018, the Big10 West Divison winner (Northwestern) was 9-5 overall (8-1 conference during regular season) with in-season losses to Duke, Akron, and Notre Dame. The lone in-conference loss for Northwestern was to Michigan of the East division that year. Penn State had to play Ohio State and Michigan every year and still managed to have good to great seasons. While Penn State can and will get tough conference draws with the lack of divisions moving forward, the same can be said for every of Big10 team. Not having to play both Ohio State and Michigan every year along with many 9 or 10 win seasons since 2014 would make me feel pretty great about the future of Penn State football. I could see them in the playoffs at least every other year if they simply maintain their recent trajectory moving forward.
Also, I want to add that I agree with your sentiment that there were many regularly bad to awful teams in the Big10 since 2014. The Big10 will (hopefully) produce more interesting games and seasons for individual teams without divisions. More than conference expansion, I think the lack of divisions will be a bigger story in 2024. Look at 2024 Florida for instance...I think a Gator fan stole the girlfriend of whomever made their conference schedule this year. And on the flipside, many teams have received lighter slates than they are used to...which is definitely the case for the Aggies this year. No Bama or Georgia, with biggest games all at home is about as good of a schedule as Florida's is terrible. Here's hoping A&M's 2025 schedule isn't like that of 2024 Florida! 😂
Ole miss can’t even hang with the physicality of Georgia
This year is different than last buddy
Just like how 2023 was different from 2021, and 2019 was different from 2017? Even when Ole Miss beats a big boy they throw it away in the next few weeks.

We would be talking about TTUN if they hadn't just lost their entire staff. If you think that they're just gonna keep developing like they did under Hairball you're silly. Sure they've won they've last three, (while cheating) but my kids grew up never knowing what it was like to lose to TTUN. My kids are in their twenties now. Anywho, the conference is still ours and we all know it.
If Ohio State drops "The Game" this year with this team and the fact that TTUN is in a rebuilding year. Finebaum might be right and Day just might have to step down. This is year 6 for Day and this team could be playing on Sundays. JK. don't flip.
To me, "The Game" doesn't even matter anymore. Why? TTUN ruined "The Game" during the Covid year when they bent the knee and decided to stay home and have a sleepover with Fauci.
I really don't care anymore and love the fact that we have divisions now.
TTUN may not even be relevant again for a very long time, again. We shall see. Hell, the whole state may not be, once again. lolz
