    Every time a hairdresser tells me that cutting curly hair is exactly the same as cutting straight hair, I know I’m going to walk out that salon looking like an idiot. Honestly, I never had great looking hair until I started ignoring hairdressers and started cutting my own hair and also stopped styling it the way they told me to.

    First,I gotta say I truly enjoy your videos. I firmly believe that any hair technician, no matter what their experience level, must participate in ongoing education. If ever you feel like you've perfected the art of hair then it's time to quit the biz and move on. In my opinion, someone who is true to the art of hair respects all of their peers advice, knowledge, and experiences and comes away with something new or different that they've learned as well as a new respect for that person and their abilities. Thank goodness for our individual srengths and weaknesses. Without them there'd be real problems. With all that being said, I have to say I disagree with a big portion of this information. I have extremely curly, dense, course, hair. It's thinner now that I'm older but I still have more than the average head of hair. I have been in the biz for nearly 30 years and in all that time I've had maybe 10 cuts done by another professional. Unfortunately not one of those cuts were good. That's not saying the technicians weren't good because they were. Had lots of experience in cutting but the majority was on straight to wavy hair. I had the luxury of growing up with nothing but curls in my family. Waves to kink and everything in between . If there were only one thing I could tell you about cutting curly hair it would be that every head of curly is different and will require you to use multiple techniques, tools, and mental vision but the most important thing is listening to that client. A client with curly hair most likely has a horrifying experience (probably experiences) in the salon. If you are truly listening to them they will give you all the information you need to keep from giving them yet another bad experience. While they are unloading all that info really get your fingers in there and become familiar with their curls. You'll never find two people with the same curls, every curly client is unique in itself. If you take the time to listen, are aware and considerate of their fears and concerns and make them feel heard they will begin to relax and be less uptight and intense so that you can be more relaxed and comfortable doing it. Never say never or always in regards to curly hair. I have curly clients that I razor, some with graduated layers some blunt some tease cut some twist cut and just about any other technique you can think of. If you can see the way the curl "flows" you can give an excellent curly cut. If at first you don't succeed try try again. Each time you do a curly cut you will get more comfortable , relaxed and confident in your skills. The most important thing ( speaking as a technician and a curly client )is the communication and execution of what was communicated.
    One last thing, if someone with curly hair says take an inch always start with a quarter to half inch. Reason being that when curls dry they shrink and BOY DO THEY SHRINK! If I cut half an inch off my hair it looks and feels like I've lost between two and two and a half inches! With curls less is more in regards to how much you remove.
    Sorry to be so long winded!
    LOVE YOUR VIDEOS!!! I'd love to see some clipper techniques for both men and women!

    I cut my own hair from too many bad experiences with "non-specialists" who claimed they knew how to cut my hair. I can't get behind that tease cutting or any razor on my head, hello frizz central.

    I can't let anyone cut my curly hair... not one stylists has stopped to observe the fact that I have varying curl patterns. AND they all insist on cutting it wet???? I've been cutting my own hair for years. Curly hair is not the same as straight hair. Demonstrating on a permed mannequin won't help since a perm creates the exact same curl across the entire head. I'm subscribed though and like a lot of your videos :)

    Wow I never really thought about cutting the majority of curly hair vertically. Made total sense!! You should find a model with a thick head of curly hair not tight ringlet curls more of a bigger curl. Most mannequin heads have thin hair and the hair cuts are usually pretty quick. So an actual model that wants a little past shoulder length with a lot of shorter layers for a more round shape and not the mushroom head look would be great. 👍🏼

    Thank you for this video. My daughter is biracial and she has very course tight curls in the back of the head and loser softer hair around the rest. We've always struggled with getting a hair cut. What's crazy is most hairstylist that we've encountered would straighten her hair then cut it but it would always turn out uneven once it curled back up. 🤦‍♀️🤷‍♀️ lol so we just kinda gave up and she lets it grow and throw it in a bun. But she loves her curly hair and I do too. Thanks again for all you do. God bless

    I wouldn't remove or shave under the hair at the bottom. I have curly hair. There is a salon in New York called widad o u i d a d.. they specialize in curly hair and they pick up a curl and they cut part of the ringlet strategically in two places so that the ringlet will lose its volume as it goes down from the top so they carve a slice and carve is what it's called.

    Oh my, please don't tease cut curly hair!!! This is soooo wrong!!The frizz the girl would get! Say goodbye to your defined curls… Every hairdresser says that they can cut curly hair. Of course! Everyone can cut curly hair but doing it right is a different thing.. I always say: you ONLY understand curly hair when you have curly hair yourself!

    Cutting the hair from underneath will make curly hair look silly. It should be cut in graduated layers according to the degree of curl. The shortest layers will be on top. This will look great in caucasian or mixed curly hair, afro hair would look poofy with too many layers, but still look silly if the hair is shorter underneath.

    My one stand out question here... You discussed taking out some of the interior to even out the weight and shape of the cut. You specifically mentioned thicker curly hair. I have very fine thin curly hair. Any tips on that? I ALWAYS end up with a beautiful top section, then an ultra thin wimpy weird looking drop off to the end length :-( I'm a bit afraid taking out some of that underneath will make the entire cut look too flat or blunt edged. It's why I don't go get haircuts as often as I'd like. What's the point of spending the money when I have to come home and finish it myself? I've never had one person actually dry cut my hair to finish it like you do. I LOVE that! I just spotted this thumbnail for How to: Beach Blonde Balayage, my hair is VERY similar to that, quite long, same-ish style, but thinner.

    Having naturally curly hair that I can blow dry straight I have to agree, it’s all about the cut...and the length you want when it’s curly! I haven’t been able to find anyone to give me a good fashionable cut in over 10 years. Help! I just need a cut in a good style. I’m easy, you don’t have blow dry my hair, just cut it so I can see the style that I like, then I know if i straighten it the look is there either way I chose to wear it!

  • @helgalp
    @helgalp 7 років тому +11

    I have very fine curly hair.
    Every hair under the middle line of the ear is only slightly wavy.
    So I have to make sure my hair stylist cuts that part of my hair 5 cm shorter.
    Now I have been to many hairstylists, all of them have said that line you said, every hairstylist is an expert, you do not need to find someone who says they are an expert on curly hair.
    And ohhh my god how that arrogance has helped the sales of baseball hats.
    My hair takes ages to grow, so when some "#$"#$" makes my hair look like a frizzy football I consider learning witching and cursing their children.
    So now, I drive an hour outside my city, cause my hairdresser moved there.
    Curly hair is different.
    Very fine curly hair does not have the freedom of short cuts or bangs, it just turns into frizz hell.
    One should not use a razor on it.
    One must be extra extra careful in layering it.
    One should be extra careful when lightening it colour wise
    So no hairdresser ought to cut curly hair with out guidance and they should always listen to and believe the customer when the customer gives them info.
    You are fantastic.
    Hugs

      That is very unusual. hair in the nape is usually the curliest. your right though in general it is important to assess where the wave pattern is stronger/looser on different parts of the hair so you can adjust for it.

    Hi, I have thick corse curly hair. Nobody seems to know how to cut it. When they thin it out like you did, it becomes frizzy and looks scraggly on the ends. Not a good look. I like the look of it tapered, with soft curls but never get that look. Is there a different technique to cut hair like mine with out thinning it out with those shears?

    • @YellowPeachist
      @YellowPeachist 7 років тому +4

      Shelley Poole Preach it about razors and thinning! It looks fine when you leave the salon and then it's awful every day after that.

    • @suzyqueue825
      @suzyqueue825 6 років тому +1

      I did hair back in the 80's, when texturizing hair first became mainstream. We learned techniques that did not involve thinning shears or a razor. What I do with my hair to give it some movement but keep the weight--which actually helps to control my crazy hair--is to, with dry hair, identify the section that is too thick and comb it out, ready to cut. But I simply cut one notch into the section, no wider than a pencil and maybe an inch into the section from the ends. Just one snip per section to start, and you probably won't need more. This technique leaves enough weight to the ends of the snipped hair to keep it from frizzing and the longer hair farther down the section has a little more room to move but with enough weight left behind to control the hair and keep it from frizzing. For me it works so well! I have shared this technique from the chair with many a stylist but they cannot think outside of the box, sadly. All they know is thinning shears and razors, which take little bits of hair out and leaves me with frizzy, uncontrollable hair. There is a ying and a yang to hair, so why they cannot consider for a moment the merit behind cutting out a chunky section vs wispy sections is beyond me. I will no longer allow my hair to be cut with thinning shears or a razor, or some scissor technique that mimics their effect, and I'm sick and tired of having to texturize my own hair because that is all stylists know. Maybe I'll come across a stylist that is bold enough to try my technique and see how well it works. Any takers?

    I am not a stylist but have viewed many of your videos trying to find a cut I can show my stylist to hopefully get my hair cut right. I have naturally loose curl in my hair, tighter in the back and underneath. I wish you would do more cuts on hair that is not straight so us curly-haired gals can see what we will look like. I generally blow mine out straight, but i wish i could find a cut that would work both wavy and straight. And how do i avoid frizz when going curly without weighing down the curl? Also, most of the hair you cut is dark and your clothes generally are as well. This can make it hard to see what you are doing because the hair too closely matches your clothes. Might I suggest you change the color of one or the other? More contrast would make for better visibility. Love your videos. If I we're younger, I would consider learning how to do hair. P.S. Do you actually read the comments?

    My 18-year-old son thinks I'm a hairdresser. I'm not. At all. I'm a nurse. I made the mistake of cutting his hair for him a while back and now he won't go to a professional. He has long wavy/curly hair and he's afraid they'll cut it too short. I'm always looking for tutorials to help me. My mom used to be a hairdresser and she taught me the basic, horizontal guide cut. But it looks like the vertical might be better for my son's hair for taking off some bulk. He has very thick hair. I would appreciate any suggestions.

    Ya, I'm not with you on this one. While the basic cut shapes are the same, there is much more. My girl has curls under neath but straight on top. I have to shorten the top to allow the curls to shine through so it doesn't look dirty, yet I love face framing and hate bangs... so there's that. I also have better experiences dry cutting her curls piece meal, trying to get them to chuck together in their own natural locks. (NO razor). My mother insists on a disconnected layering in order to allow for curl definition.
    Defining those curls, defeating frizz, and tracking how the curls vary in tightness from one part of the head to another is HUGE.... and I am no professional.

    Will dry teasing cut at the end work if I straighten the curly hair using a straightening iron?

      Saundra Combs nope. Just happened to me. Hair was straightened then thinned and life is now frizzy.

    never texturize curly hair...unless you want to look like you stuck your head in an electric socket BTW curly hair already has texture so why add more and make me look like a frizz ball
