    Matt, thanks for the videos. I have had these problems for years with a '96 passport and now my '01 passport. I have had so many mechanics tell me that a new EGR valve is all I need and it never fixed. I have always had the light go on and off so was always able to pass emissions. Until yesterday, so I found your videos and started with the cleaning of the old valve, unsuccessful. Then I decided I didn't want to try and take things apart to clean inside the intake so I replaced the EGR valve, unsuccessful. So, it was on to the cleaning of the tube, worked perfectly as far as I can see. The only thing I really did wrong was not run the drive cycle long enough to reset the computer after wiping the codes, back to emissions tomorrow to try again, but feeling confident since I have driven around and no light yet. Thank you again, this helped someone who is mechanically challenged, and I didn't have any extra parts afterwards...yay!

      Kip, that is awesome! Your story is exactly why I posted these videos. I felt just like you did when I started doing some of my own maintenance. If it wasn't for amazing resources like UA-cam, I never would have been able to learn what little bit I do know. So, pat yourself on the back for taking the initiative and doing it on your own! Thanks for watching, and please let me know how your emission test turns out. Good luck!

      wanted to add that for anyone who does this it is very easy if you take your time and do it right. Looks can be deceiving, none of my gaskets were bad, EGR ports looked clear with minor carbon, but once I opened the throttle body it took me back how clogged it was. There was zero air coming through, 100% clogged. I used a hanger with a folded loop to grab debris inside, sprayed seafoam deep creep inside, repeated a few times, and after i chipped a few inches away inside, it pushed through. A quick shot of air through valve plate and all was done. Matt you were right about the coolant lines, it was the only real difficult part, but for anyone reading, a little wd40 and those clamps and hose will slide right off and back on again. Thanks again Matt and good luck to everyone who try this.

    Great video Matt! I have lost count how many of these engines I've seen in junkyard with the stainless steel EGR down-tube inside the intake that are completely clogged and had brand new EGR valves installed on them. I guess people gave up on them since they could not get them to pass emissions, not knowing about the EGR internal down-tube. I always pull the EGR valve off, access the end of the EGR down tube inside the throttle body by propping butterfly open with screw driver so I don't have to remove throttle body. Plug end of internal down-tube by jamming a rag into end of it it with a rag, then fill it with carb cleaner or brake parts cleaner, let it soak for about an hour & monitor level & re-adding more as leaks into rag to soften & loosen deposits in tube. Straighten a metal clothes hanger or a 18" Nylon Pipe Brush, 1/4" Brush Diameter and run it up in the tube to break the junk loose and then finally flush with more brake parts cleaner or carb cleaner through the holes on top where EGR sits and re-assemble. Not cleaning that tube will do no good long-term.

    Followed your video almost exactly and almost cleared all my codes then used cleaner on Mass air filter and now have all codes cleared for two days. I did not remove the throttle body and worked through it, quite a pain since the tube was full of hard gunk. Did your method after sticking a long poker into it and then blew air from the ERG hole. Thanks for this...I saved maybe $700.

    i did this exactly as shown to my 2001 Trooper. It not only cleared the persistent EGR CEL (P0401), but also solved my intermittent P0300 codes. My EGR tube was almost completely blocked with deposits. I had to use an old length of choke cable to break some of it free. Keep up the good work.,

    Have an 01 3.2l and I did exactly everything you did. I used valvoline carb and TB cleaner. Used a solid pipe cleaner and a wire to break the funk up. I just blew it through with a small tube using my lungs. Really easy method. Throw gum out in the tank and a new air filter. Randy is buzzin! Huge thanks!

    Amazing video!!!! +1000!!! i just replaced the egr on my 99 passport two days ago and the light came on twice. took off the egr and tried to blow air down the holes and the one for the intake side was plugged. googled searched the code and bam!! your video :-) worked like a dream. a lil trick to keep from having to take the TB off is to prop open the flapper with something and you can still get to the tube :-) thanks for the post man. keep them coming :-D

      Wade Buchan Thanks for the kind words, Wade! I'm really glad you found my video helpful and were able to repair your problem on your own. It's a great feeling, isn't it? Now hopefully you'll have no more EGR issues for a long while. I did find later when I had the entire intake off that using a long, skinny wire brush to scrub out the inside of the EGR passage made the cleaning much more effective and easier. I would just periodically check the condition of the EGR tube through the throttle body (great tip on opening the butterfly valve...that does make things easier...I just wanted to be sure I could get access to the tube). If it starts getting gunked up again, you can clean it before it gets totally blocked up.

    Perfect video. I also had cleaned my EGR several times and even replaced it once and code always came back until I discovered the front of the EGR tube clogged behind the throttle body. Once I pushed a Philips screwdriver through the clog at the front of the tube, I just used pipe cleaners and Seafoam to clean it out. It never came back. I have seen dozens of these engines in junkyards with the front of the EGR tube clogged. I wonder how many went to scrap because they could not figure it out? Once you get it cleaned out, you don't have to remove the EGR and risk damaging the gasket. Instead, you can remove the little allen-head plug (5mm or 6mm allen wrench) just under the side of the EGR Valve, then wrap tape or shop rag around a piece of tubing and put one end in Seafoam and the other end in the hole, get someone to start engine and let it suck Seafoam in and do this once per year and it will keep that tube cleaned out.

    Thanks for the videos, I read in an Isuzu forum about this issue with the EGR tube getting plugged searched on youtube and there your video was! My EGR tube had maybe the size of a pin hole in the center for air flow, it was pretty bad, the hardest part was finding some sort of pipe cleaner to shove down in the tube to give it a good cleaning. A day later my check engine light did come on again with an EGR code so I replaced the EGR valve and its been fine ever since. Planning on replacing the intake manifold gasket eventually and whatever else is cheap and located in that area such as the thermostat so I will definitely be referring back to your videos.

    I have gone through problem with mine. Cleaned the EGR, I ran a long pipe cleaner thru the EGR into the manifold. I took the throttle body to a friend that had an ultrasonic cleaner. He took it all aprt and cleaned everything. Replaced the idle motor . A couple of weeks later the temp gauge went out. Here we go again. Lesson learned if you have a high mileage RODEO AND HAVE TO TEAR THE TOP OF THE ENGINE OFF JUST REPLACE EVERYTHING

    I have a 2003 Isuzu...but this is the SAME. I highly appreciate someone going through the trouble in posting something this helpful. Hard to find decent model specific information how to approach issues like this.
    I don't have compressed air to blow out the gunk, would using a automatic air inflator work or some air pump? or perhaps a vacuum would be better.

    • @mattpayne4087
      @mattpayne4087  8 років тому

      I'm glad you found this helpful! I'm not sure if an air pump is going to move the air through the passage quickly enough to remove the built-up gunk, but it's worth a try. It should at least help clear some of the buildup if your EGR passage is completely blocked. Someone else also recommended using a clutch cable or similar flexible wire to pull all the way through the passage. Even a short length of braided wire rope would probably do the trick.
      Good luck, and thanks for watching!

    This a very nicely made video. However a much simpler method is to remove the EGR valve and plug the tube opening of the egr mount (pointed wood dowel works fine) start and run the engine at 2000 rpm and spray carb cleaner into the small hole. A couple minutes seems to do the job. Use your scan tool and reset the three trouble codes that you will have set in the computer. This is a very common every few years problem. I have never needed to do anything more complicated. Fifteen minute job.

    • @mattpayne4087
      @mattpayne4087  9 років тому +1

      Terry Odenbach Thanks Terry! Is the general idea behind the method you described to fill up the EGR tube with cleaner by plugging the end of the tube, and allowing the cleaner to "soak" for a few minutes? That's an interesting idea. Thanks for sharing. I would still imagine that mechanically cleaning the EGR tube with a wire brush would be the absolute best method, but your method would probably help keep things clean after a thorough cleaning if done periodically. Thanks for sharing!

    • @mattpayne4087
      @mattpayne4087  9 років тому +1

      Marco Galvez Thanks Marco! You can use as much cleaner as you need to dissolve all of the carbon buildup. I would not worry about using "too much". I would use the cleaner in stages - spray some in, let it soak, brush/flush out the tube, and then repeat with more cleaner. And when you are finishing, try to soak up/clean up as much of the excess cleaner as possible. Most of it should evaporate eventually, but if it pools in the bottom of your intake manifold, just soak it up with a rag. I also strongly recommend using a small wire brush to ream out the inside of the EGR tube after you spray the cleaner inside. I didn't demonstrate this in this video, but based on my experience since I filmed this, a wire brush greatly aids in the cleaning process.

      I do - that might actually work even better. In hindsight, I don't think Deep Creep was the best choice for me to use. I think carb cleaner, or something like Berryman B-12 or even regular Seafoam would have been a better choice to break down the carbon deposits.

    I apologize for not being more clear. Plug the hole that connects the egr base tube to the exhaust manifold. Unless the tube in the intake manifold is totally plugged which has never happened to me their is plenty of vacuum available at the valve end of the intake manifold tube to suck the cleaner clear through the tube. It is even possible to stall the engine if you get carried away. A slow continuous spray for several minutes does the job for me. This is sufficient to clear the trouble codes so that the vehicle can pass a smog test. If the passage in the manifold is large enough the old VW clutch cable trick should also work very well. For any young folks I would be happy to explain how that works.

      +Matt Payne I thought of using an old wire coat hanger. This certainly helped clear the code from my 00 rodeo, but I think all I did now was break up some larger deposits. The car runs just fine except from at idle now....I'm hoping that all the gunk that has been loosened up clears soon. I did everything you did in your video minus the fact I used a coat hanger and I didn't have a compressor that put enough air through the line to sufficiently clear the system.

So ignore the previous comment and i'll keep you updated on how the thing runs after i replace that gasket. If you got any tips on how to take JUST the upper intake off instead of the entire thing. That'd be much appreciated.

      +Joseph Campos On my 99 Trooper the first time I had to clean the tube in the intake I used the VW clutch cable trick. Hit your local VW shop and buy a clutch cable. Cut the cable off about two feet from the threaded end after taping the cut area well. Remove the tape and flare out the cut end a little so it is a little larger than the egr tube. Put the flared end into the tube and the threaded end into a drill and run it in and out of the tube clear back to the egr valve end. Sea Foam deep creep or any other engine carbon remover poured in through the egr valve port will help. After doing this once just doing what I suggested two months occasionally will keep it nice and clean.

      PurpleBl00ded Thanks for watching! The fuel sending unit, which is what sends the signal to the fuel level gauge in the instrument cluster on the dash, is actually attached to the fuel pump in the fuel tank. If you watch my video series on replacing the fuel pump, you will learn how to get to the fuel sending unit - it is the "arm" with the float that attaches to the pump.
      If you do replace the sending unit, I would strongly recommend purchasing a new pump and sending unit together and replacing the entire assembly at one time. Based on everything I've read, the ethanol fuels used these days wreak havoc on fuel systems, and it seems these pumps just do not hold up. Unless your pump has been replaced recently, I think it would be best to install a new pump at the same time as the sending unit. You don't want to have to remove the fuel tank any more often than you have to!
      My video series on this process is linked below. Good luck!

      Gulliver Gimeno Gulliver, I'm glad to hear you are hoping to keep your Rodeo running well - I think these are great trucks if you are willing to give them some TLC! I completely agree with you - it is expensive to pay a mechanic to maintain an older vehicle, and in my experience, it seems that a lot of mechanics are neither knowledgeable about Isuzus, nor do they want to learn, since Isuzu no longer sells passenger vehicles in the United States. I've lost track of how many times a mechanic has dismissed an issue by saying, "Well, it's an Isuzu..." That's a large part of why I started learning to do my own maintenance.
      I actually am in the process of changing the transmission fluid on a Trooper that I recently purchased, and I'm hoping to post a video of that when I'm done. Check back soon and hopefully I'll have it posted.
      Thanks again for your compliments!

    hey! so this video is great, totally helped, but rather than take the throttle body off I just went through it to scrape out the completely blocked pipe. going to run some air through the egr port but wondering if I don't take the throttle body off will all the gunk that comes out hurt my engine?

    • @mattpayne4087
      @mattpayne4087  8 років тому

      Hey Ashley, sorry for the delayed response. I would say that it's never great for your engine to have any sort of solid (i.e. - not a liquid or gas) sucked into the combustion chambers. With that said, the gunk in the EGR port is probably not going to blow up your engine. However, if it was my vehicle, I'd try to clean out as much off the nasty stuff as I could.
      Good luck, and I'm glad you found the video helpful! Thanks for watching!

    Ok I scanner Diagnostis to say code is P0121 is throttle position sensor but thought need clear throttle body ? Correct ?

    • @mattpayne4087
      @mattpayne4087  9 років тому

      Luis Rivera Luis, I would start with trying to sort out the P0121 code first. Something is going on either with the sensor, the wiring, or the computer. You will probably need to have a scan tool to be able to see the readout from the throttle position sensor as you operate the gas pedal. Unfortunately, cleaning the throttle body is not going to solve this issue. You can try replacing the throttle position sensor to see if that solves the problem, but there are actually two sensors: one is actually mounted on the side of the throttle, and the other is mounted near the gas pedal. It looks like the parts cost between $50-$125 each, so it could be an expensive repair, and it might not end up solving your problem if the real issue is wiring or the computer.
      Good luck. I hope you can get it figured out.

      @mattpayne4087  10 років тому

      Mark Thomas Mark, I have not had any more EGR issues since I performed this cleaning. However, full disclosure - I ended up having to remove the intake manifold last winter to fix another issue (I have a series of videos on this as well) and did a thorough cleaning of the EGR tube at that time. Despite having been cleaned when I filmed this video, it had gotten fairly dirty again. It was easier to clean with the manifold out of the vehicle, and I was able to do a more complete cleaning at that time, so I don't anticipate having any major issues with the tube getting clogged up, provided I continue to do periodic maintenance cleanings like I did in this video.
      I hope this helps. Thanks for watching!

    Hey Matt quick question for you
    Can you get to the thermostat at this point? Or must remove the intake.
    By the way great video.
    Thanks

    • @mattpayne4087
      @mattpayne4087  9 років тому

      Juan Ayala Hi Juan, I've read about a few people who claim to have changed their thermostat without removing the intake manifold, but I honestly have no idea how they pulled it off. I struggled to get to all of the thermostat housing bolts even with my intake manifold removed because of the rigid coolant line that runs along the engine valley from the firewall to the front of the engine. If you could somehow get the thermostat out with the intake in place, I'm not sure how in the world you would get the new one in and seated properly in order to get a good seal.
      In my opinion, it's not worth struggling to attempt this with the intake manifold in place, because I think ultimately you are going to have to remove the intake anyway. It's a shame the engineers couldn't have come up with a better location for the thermostat. Oh well.
      Thanks for watching!

      Thanks, Matt! I've been trying for a long time and it's nothing but a big pain in the ass. Way too many things in the way and yeah, the Isuzu engineers sure made this complicated- It's to the point where I need to bring it to a professional- Thanks again.

      Juan Ayala I'm sorry to hear your vehicle is giving you such a hard time, Juan. I hope you are able to find a quality mechanic that can do the work for you at a fair price. Best of luck to you!

      There must be a way. I was going to try a thermostat change on my 2000 rodeo. I could not figure out how to do it. Took it to my mechanic and he had it done and back to me in a couple of hours.
      Recently I had a coolant leak that required the intake manifold to be removed. He charged me 4 hour labor @ $95 to get to the issue. The thermostat change was no where near that.

    Hello again Matt, I need some help. Do you have a video on removal of cigarette lighter in a Dodge Ram 1500? It's an 01. I'm stuck! Thanks!! Greg Riley

    • @mattpayne4087
      @mattpayne4087  9 років тому

      +Gregory Riley Hey Gregory, unfortunately that is not something I've had to do, so I don't have a video about it. Sorry about that! I'm guessing it will require removing the lower portion of the dash...but I can't even look at my truck to try to help you out right now because my truck is broken down and is in a mechanic's shop. Sorry about that! However, I did have to remove the lower dash under the steering wheel to repair an issue with my headlight wiring, and that panel came off fairly easily by removing a few screws. I would imagine the panel where the cigarette lighter would remove fairly similarly.
      If nothing else, check out www.dodgeforum.com, specifically the 2nd Gen Rams section - you can sign up for free and post a question, and I would be someone will try to help you out.
      Good luck!

    Wouldn't a pipe snake or a flexible drain brush like ones to clean a sink of hair clogs accomplish the same effect of cleaning the egr tube? I welcome anyones comments, suggestions, or any other ideas. Terry Odenback in the comments mentioned removing the egr valve and plugging the egr hole and spraying cleaner into the small hole This sounds like your Seafoam Deep creep you mentioned. Again open to anyone's suggestions. Thanks in advance.

    I have a 2001 rodeo with the reduce power light on. I have changed the tps, mass airflow, fuel filter and it's still in reduce power. Anyone else had this problem?

    • @mattpayne4087
      @mattpayne4087  7 років тому +1

      Do you have any check engine codes present? Sometimes if the TPS gets out of synch with the pedal position sensor, it will send the PCM into "reduced power mode". You could possibly have a faulty pedal position sensor.

    Doing this will also slow down how much the engine burns oil- I truly forget how much Isuzu states is normal for how much oil consumption is ok... but a quart per a 1000 miles sounds right.... and yes that is insane and plays why they are out of business!!
