Interesting that the likes of Microsoft and Magna are investors... meaning that they probably do not have robotics programs of their own (i.e., they are late to the game). Other big names are also in this situation. If FSD progress is any indication, real world AI may be the key to humanoid robot performance.
What we really need is robots to clean the sewers. What the heck are humanoid robots for if not to massage the ego of their creators?

This highlights the many advantages of Optimus over other robotics companies. Tesla has the money, the AI capability, the best engineers, inhouse manufacturing capability and a hands-on visionary leader in Elon Musk.

The diversity of different companies, giving their input from different perspectives has a lot going for it.
Rival or not it comes down to price point, and hardware.
If it's cloud based, it won't last when there's a more affordable offline model.
