The use of Gallery should come with a huge warning. Gallery seems to work as a quick link to photos in the Pictures folder and other locations. However, be forewarned that it is not. If you delete a file from Gallery, it will also be deleted from the Pictures folder. *Sigh* So, don't assume that after deleting a photo in Gallery, you will have a backup copy in the Pictures folder. This could be catastrophic if you perform a massive delete of files in Gallery.
Very true and important. I'm pinning this comment to the top so people can read it as well. So sorry this happened to you, I think. Thank you for commenting.
Appreciate your video demo / instruction on this . 3:43...that is sneaky....that when you launch a photo from your folder, the gallery app, will take that photo, without your permission... Do you know how to disable the *"Gallery App"* ??
Hi Kan-zee - Thank you so much for watching. I don't know how you can disable the Gallery App - it seems like it's embedded in the Windows operating system!! Cheers! Mollie
I store my pictures on an external hard drive, with pictures sorted in folders that I create. That to me me is the easiest way to store and access my pictures in an orderly way, and doesn't clutter my internal hard drive.
Thank you for trying to explain this. I think Gallery is a useless feature Microsoft added so users would backup their photos to OneDrive. I don't use OneDrive or the default photo app. I use pCloud for backup and Imageglass to view my photos, and I simply create and label folders to organize my photos
I think Gallery is great and easy to use. Just click on Gallery, then on the ribbon bar click Collection, select Manage Collection, and then you can Choose which folders to see in Gallery, any folder from any drive you want. Managing photos from applications is far superior to individual folders. I.e. look at all the great search features like face recognition to find all photos of one person, or your pet by searching bird or dog. You can’t do that with just folders!
Thank you so much for sharing your experience! You make great points! I probably am old fashioned to like a folder structure for clean organization! Thanks for watching and commenting!
HI Jojoja - Don't open Gallery to view your photos. Figure out where they are in your computer folders. Then you can use a Duplicate Finding Program to delete photos. Here's a couple of videos to help: Organizing Photos with Windows 11 ua-cam.com/video/rH2L3o76pCk/v-deo.htmlsi=4OOm6iCIQBedbYP6 Using a Duplicate Finding Program ua-cam.com/users/live3hg09uwOMBM?si=DVuKbuxaKx0rvdMF Hoping this helps! I have a great deal of downloaded photos in Gallery, "When I take a picture on my Samsung Galaxy S20 FE 5g, They unfortunately go to Gallery. both computer and phone. Even If I download a photo from a friend on my windows 11 computer " google Chrome " browser the photo goes to Gallery , WHAT a headache. Can I transfer my photos from Gallery to another program ? I am lost as to what to do. Also would you happen to know if there is a place on windows 11 that I can view "ALL of the photos on my computer" in One place , no doubt I have duplicates which I have to get rid of , Once duplicates are gone I want to arrange my photos In folders according to various vacation trips i've taken and so on , Hope you can help I am Not computer savey . Then after all are in their folders I can transfer to my external drive . Thanks .
Hi Sue- it’s just a matter of always going to your file explorer to view your pictures. Gallery is simply a photo viewer. It does not hold your pictures in the program. Here’s a video on how to organize photos with windows 11. ua-cam.com/video/rH2L3o76pCk/v-deo.htmlsi=3L1sX-ZG_IxwZ-2R I’m hoping this helps. I usually don’t recommend using any other program but file explorer. Mylio is a great program, but it has a huge learning curve and you’ve gotta use it routinely to keep up with it and make sure all is good in the program. Be careful if you use Mylio as I have had people lose their work. Here’s two videos on it: ua-cam.com/video/3APiBlyccac/v-deo.htmlsi=HJPVaCU7F8zvfmsI ua-cam.com/video/KlrnBmDJXuo/v-deo.htmlsi=hvDZdNv-vUdZf50G Hope this helps! Cheers! Mollie

It is confusing. . . don't delete the file - it will delete from your computer. If you don't want to use Gallery, you'll need to find something else to view your photos on your computer. All this is completely incomprehensible to me.... I am at the point where i just want to throw the damn computer in the dump- sell the cameras and give up with photography. It kills me how you younger folks find this computer stuff so easy. All I seem to get is constant error messages with everything I do. ( I am able to see my pictures in the gallery thing but can't see them under photos.) 😖😖😖
I’m sorry this is so frustrating… but actually don’t think it is easy and would be happy to chat over a zoom call? My calendar is: www.calendly.com/mollieb/pixplan Dont give up on photography just yet! Take care, Mollie
Until the bloody Windows 11 was forced on me (long story), I copied all my stuff on 8 flash drives. I never wanted or trusted any cloud. But now One Drive has stolen eveything from me without my permission. And that's only the beginning... But never mind...what I need now is finding where my screen shots have gone (using Start and.Print Screen as i did with Windows 10). Can find nothing. Keep hearing about "Pictures" file. Well it never came with my delightful Windows 11. There was only a new one, Gallery. Sometimes an occasional picture finds itself in there, no idea why. Just read that if you use the old method it won't necessarily save pictures. SO WHY IS THERE A PRINT SCREEN KEY?? Seriously, heads should roll mightily at Microsoft for Windows 11. i'd love to see a class action suit.
Hi Sharcon… I agree! One Drive and Windows are so frustrating…. There usually is a Pictures folder …. Sometimes in your One Drive folder and/or in your user folder. I feel like I have seen screen shots show up in the pictures folder in the OneDrive folder. I actually like to take the screenshot save it myself and rename it right away so I can find it. Good luck! And thank you for sharing your thoughts here. You are not alone!

This is a good solution but do be sure to back up your external hard drive!

Thanks again Mollie. Very helpful.😊
I just got rid of that feature; I hate that they want to impose us the mobile experience in desktop
I agree … we just have to roll along with whatever changes come along g!

It really does confuse people!! This is why I just don't use it much. Thanks so much for watching and commenting!
Too much hand movements and you're being overly melodramatic. Irritating. The representation could have been much better without the added melodrama
Hi Robert! Thanks for the feedback! I’ll keep this in mind for the future!

What a moaner. Bugger off
