You say tomato, I say tomato... guess that only works if you say it out loud. But, here's a question: is a tomato REALLY a fruit? Or is it a vegetable? And what about the other classic "vegetables" like carrots, potatoes, and beans... have they been masquerading as veggies your entire life? We're here to tell you that, yes, vegetables are a LIE!

What definition ISNT a social construct
@@tannerm7303Exactly. Your name is a construct given to you by your parents.
Even if you decide to give yourself a name, that name is used to differentiate yourself from everyone and everything else.
If you share a name with someone, your defining features like your hair, your ears, the color of your skin...oh dear...🤪
Wanna know what's funny. Santi doesn't use the proper definition of vegetables and he even mis categorized broccoli
I just had a vegetable unit in my food sciences class. There are many classifications of vegetables (tuber, flower, stalk, even fruit) based on where the eaten part of the plant is grown. In order to make it as a vegetable a plant must have a certain nutritional value and taste. *This is why even though cucumbers and tomatoes are fruits botanically they are prepared as vegetables.*
Anyway I get the idea of the video I just thought that was interesting
so when I make tomato juice it is a fruit but if I make tomato soup it is a vegetable, depends on the preparation.
tomato's got reclassified socially as a veggie in early days America due to taxation laws.
Yeah I’m a plant science major so my knowledge of fruit and vegetables just made this video like 10x more confusing. Essentially botanically, as he said, any part of a plant that is not a fruit is classified as a vegetable, or being of vegetative growth. But obviously culturally and culinarily this is not a satisfactory definition.
@@AdarableKitten so capitalism strikes again?
The easiest answer is just pointing at a vegetable and saying that

Food Theory Idea: What is the best liquid to dip cookies in?
We dunk them in milk in America but in France they dunk them in wine, so what liquids would work?
@LaughingStock00
The British dip them in hot tea and some parts of Italy use coffee with biscotti or pitzelle, both of which tastes way better than it sounds. I'm an even split amongst the three depending on cookie type but milk is still King for chocolate chips.
@@gravestone4840 maybe santi would even add ones used in no parts of the world👀

The thing is that vegetables in Danish translates into grøntsag.
“Grønt” being the colour green and “sag” translating into “thing” makes an assumption that vegetables is just “green things”💀
Counterpoint: every edible part of a plant is a vegetable, and food items can be in multiple categories. So yes, fruits are vegetables. Grains are vegetables. Leafy greens are vegetables. Fries contain vegetables, and so do breads, salads, and breakfast cereals. Things can be multiple things!

Food Theory: Food is NOT Real
We used to call leaves and stems 'herbs' in old cookbooks. 'Herbs' didn't refer to a 'tiny amount of flavoring agent' like we use the word today, it basically just meant whatever fresh salad-like greens you had on hand that time of year. For instance, the recipe might suggest you serve the main ingredient on a bed of herbs, meaning enough leafy greens to cover the whole plate.

You've missed a major point in the definition of a "fruit", which is that it's the RIPENED OVARY WALL of a plant. That doesn't mean that you're allowed to call flowers and buds "fruit", because they're not, and they don't have the same kind of nutrition. Especially broccoli and cauliflower, which are at least just as much stem as bud.

For me, we have a culinary definition of vegetables.
1. They are typically used in sauces, curries, or salads
2. Dishes with it as the primary food is eaten as lunch or dinner (eg. tomatoes are the primary food of tomato sauce)
3. They are plants (duh)
4. When someone looks at it, they don’t think fruit (this is subjective)

Still fungi (or just mushrooms to be more specific but still talking about a category). Not all leaves are edible but we still call the edible ones leaves. It's no different.
Fungi never had anything to do with veggies. The mushrooms we know and love would be classified as mushrooms and I don’t know about yeast
In terms of food groups, they’re usually classified as protein
Fun fact. Mushrooms are more related to you than to plants. Have fun saying that to all your vegan friends like I do.
