He wasnt "taken aback" by her (negative connotation). He was "taken by her" (positive connotation). Pay attention to your wording.
Betty Boop was actually inspired by Helen Kane. Even sued the studio and the reason why they said they took inspiration from baby Esther and her performance, was so that Helen could lose the case.
Those aren't baby Esther. One isn't even black. Betty boop was created by Esther in relation to her performances but not looks.

Double checking this online, it seems that this is wrong from the sources I looked up. From what I gathered, baby Esther inspired Helen Kane to sing in a boopy scat way, and that Betty boop was inspired by Helen Kane. Seems a little self evident too when you look at Helen Kane and compare her visually to the cartoon character she inspired. Dunno what skin colour has to do with the actress who voiced the character. I'm sick of all this race nonsense.
