Everyone keeps talking about it only using 3 plugins on the uc1. I mean, isn't that the point?? To get rid of all your money wasted plugins, turn the monitor off and your ear up and mix simple. Hey I love it.. I have wasted years and thousands looking for easy magic instead of learning and practicing strong fundemental mixing patterns and using 5 or 6 plugins along the way instead of 30. I don't know. Just my thoughts

That is an excellent point. You are right, less choices and simplify.

Exactly! I recently took out an SSL subscription and boom! Immediately stripping back all the dumb plugins across my tracks and just running with the handful of high quality, SSL set had made a huge difference. Workflow and mix so much better.
Next move is to save for this and the UF1

When I first got into music production I got plug-in crazy. Now I mostly use the plug-ins that come with my DAW with a few third party plugins. I’m excited about this channel strip. Keep it simple.

I agree with you on the output gain on the controller, it’s definitely needed. I kinda like that on 360 that it doesn’t let you see a reading on the knobs to display what you’re doing because in a way it helps with mixing with your ears and if you want an accurate reading you can still hover the mouse on the controls. It’s a great piece and I love the channel strips and bus comp they’re a staple in my workflow.

If someone from SSL is watching this then first of all thank you for taking the risk on this product, I love it. People buying it aren’t simply buying a plugin controller they are buying into a natural mixing platform. A few suggestions , The Fine button has a hold function and a momentary function perhaps allow the user to select an alternate mode that uses the fine button as a shift button. Hold shift (Fine) and turn another knob to use the width control, pan control etc. The magnifying glass button could be used to toggle a simple overlay of digital values on the 360 software, I’m sure Dave would love that. Showing and hiding the bus compressor isn’t very useful. Also IMHO it’s very important that you allow for more bus compressors. I believe the limit in the 360 software is 8. Maybe I’m mad but I do put one on every bus :)

Another great video ❤. I was given a uc1 for my birthday…..always loved (from duende days) the ssl channel strip and love the way this device and updated plugins work! Must be mentioned that 6 months of full subscription to the ssl plugins including the fusion ones etc adds £70 of value to the uc1 …as well as the perpetual licences to channel strip and bus comp. Thanks again

First, thank you uncle Dave for you honest review.
In my area I worked primarily on an Otari Concept 1 and Elite series consoles.
When I Transitioned to to using a computer to multitrack, the waves SSL channel strip, and buss compressor was my primary plug in. After a few years I purchased my uad system and I started using thier SSL versions. Fast forward to the native bundle and UC1 release, I couldn't be happier. I agree with you on all parts. With the recent update the scrolling issue is a minor irritation, until I remember to stop looking at the screen, listen and focus on the UC1 and my near fields. I enjoy PLAYING, skipping and frolicking in my fields of frequencies. The UC1 is a true joy to work on.

I see all the pieces coming together. Please give us a mid format control surface (maybe like the size of the Matrix) with maybe 16 faders, and UC1 style channel strip on each channel. and the bus controller in the center section.. And if you really wanna trigger some gear lust, add monitor control and talkback. and when you do, send me one free for the idea lol

I want to love the SSL UC1 but I’m going to wait until I see it control more than 3 plugins. I’m with you that the Softube controller is dated and that alone is why I haven’t bought it even though I have UAD plugins. I WANT the ssl to do that part. Until then neither will be added and I’ll stick with mouse and keyboard. Great series of videos!! Thank you so much for helping me with a $1000 decision. Oh btw… I use the ssl channel strip 2 and buss compressor 2 on all my mixes and channels so I’m so sad that at a $1000 this doesn’t so much what Softube does :(

Hi Dave. Shout out from Paris, watching your channel. Great videos as usual. About the EQ values not showing on the 360 console I agree. Personally I look up the values directly from the UC1 screen as I tweak the knobs. Of course you have to bow your head but I found myself getting used to it. No need to look at the console and no need to use the mouse.

Softube Console 1 is not so great for the same reason with the additional issue of the unit itself not having any numerical indication of where I am and how much level or the lack of any such LCD at all! On my old ass HUI, I can see exactly where I am in my session with out looking at the screen! I can turn the screen off. with the Console one I can do this! Also the Console one is ugly and chunky it has to much space around! Then you add the fader unit to it and that also looks kinda ugly and cheap! These are just my opinons!

It will be interesting to see if any of your issues with the UC-1 will be solved by the UF-8. I have the UC-1 and the Faderport 8. I'm not planning on getting the UF-8 because I think the Faderport will do the same things well. The only problem I have is that I can't get the 4K B plugin to show up in Studio One. It shows up in iLok manager, but not in the DAW. I may need to fool around with the locations that Studio One is looking for plugins. Good review. I'm looking forward to the UF-8/UC-1 combination videos.

It’s time for them to come out with an ssl desk that is an only a controller. Maybe like the Origin but just a controller with the look and feel. Avid/digi has done it so why not. Completely in the box I think most studios would have one. I also think every classic piece of hardware should have a controller. La2a/1176/ pulltec so on. A controller that fills the slots doesn’t need any depth just the faceplate and usb. It’s coming.

    • @HomeRecordingMadeEasy

@@HomeRecordingMadeEasy I think there’s definitely a market for it. It’s already here they’re just selling it in components. UF8 and UCF/ Console 1 & faderport 1. They sell us a channel strip control then 8 faders. Where have you banking and selecting one channel at a time. Just give us the full board. I believe within the next 5 to 7 years they’ll be a full software controller version of some classic board. I believe ssl is setting up for it with its 360 software.

  • @jean-philippeboisbriand9594

Suggestion to SSL for the 360 software! First: set an auto gain (or auto trim) to offset the output gain automatically that you can enabled or disabled at your need so you don't have to do it with your mouse. Second: set an auto scroll that automattically follow the part of the channel strip of the knobs that is turned, so there's no need for a magnifier as you see everything you re doing in real time without the need to scroll with your keyboard keys or touching anything for those that have'nt a 4k monitor. Third: place a big rectangle on the upper dash (at the left of the bars/beats smpte lights) to show every numeric values of the turned knobs (or 2 rectangles if you turned 2 knobs at the same time) (i say ''big rectangles'' thinking of people that don't have a great eye view)... (and maybe make it compatible with more daw like Adobe Audition/Premiere, Samplitude, Cakewalk ect..) Great controller btw! Thank You Uncle Dave for that great video series.

**New subscriber here, great video** I've had my units over a year, after not really using them as intended I recently started to try and learn UC1 and UF8 with my DAW Logic Pro. I must be honest, it's slowing me down..... Unless the SSL Chanel strip is in plugin slot 1 the entire process of integration between both hardware units and mixing in Logic is a nightmare. I am experimenting with Hornet gain structure plug in and UA tape plugins in slots 1 & 2 prior to the, 'desk' SSL channel... I'd also like to have distortion and a 'flavour' non SSL compressor plugins prior to SSL which puts SSL channel strip into slot 5 it throws the hardware units into chaos. 😢

I use Ableton Live so mono tracks still have a "PAN" knob (because they're using dual mono I'm guessing). When I use mono tracks I still see both "PAN & WIDTH" but the width knob isn't greyed out, it just doesn't work.
I guess it's how Studio One works and 360 work together but if that's true...How do you PAN mono tracks using SSL controllers??
      ...Very strange.

    • @randomcustomer2806
      @randomcustomer2806 Рік тому

@@doodoogtube You'd use the UF-8's pan pot as that isn't controlling any plugin, it's using HUI or Mackie protocol to control your DAWs own internal fader, pan, sends, transport etc using MIDI. It would be confusing if the pan controls INSIDE the plugin controlled the pan function OUTSIDE of it at system-level wouldn't it? I'm presuming the PAN on the stereo plugin is just there for a quick left-right balancing adjustment before it gets out of the plugin and heads out to the DAW's own mixer channel pan (I'm also presuming on that basis that the output control on the UC-1 that apparently moves the 360's 'fader' position is just moving the virtual fader IN the plugin and not the DAW fader..?)
Happy to be educated as I only have the UF-8 but really want one of these puppies...

My pet peeve against SSL is for such a well-respected audio-related company, that they are too cheap and disrespectful to its user base to NOT have a RESIZING FEATURE as well as AUTO GAIN feature on all of its plugins when even lesser-known plugin creators realize the importance of such a feature. This IMHO is a slap in the face to their supporters.
