Don’t give up. Unfortunately this current generation are quite selfish. It’s all about ‘me!’ and they don’t give two hoots about anyone else. They have no problems photographing/videoing themselves (inc others in the background) and posting on various social media platforms for the world to see so why should I care. There are cameras on every street corner for crying out loud. They don’t want to be photographed but they love making a scene for all to see (and others/themselves film on their phones LOL). You might need to start a group photography session of like minded people to do the street walks so you have numbers on your side. I wonder if you had of gone out when the crowds were out that it may have been easier to photograph the scenes without being hassled…safety in numbers…🤔

I was thinking the same thing. Go out with someone else to give moral support. As for going out when there are more people around, that might help as it's not so obvious who is in the picture. Of course if you want a cleaner, less cluttered composition that won't help.

Nothing to do with being 'selfish' and everything to do with being raised in a society where from a young age people are growing up mindful of the risks of sexual predators and in the news there are daily reports of men sentenced for sexual offences all connected with the rise of the online world. People have grown mistrustful of one another and seeing someone out with a camera rather than a camera phone stands out as different. None of this places the photographer at fault in this case, and verbal abuse isn't justified, but neither is writing off a whole generation of youths as selfish when they've been brought up by the generation ahead to be suspicious of others, sometimes with good reason.

@TL-xw6fh I've had this too in Central London. I was on the Southbank once where all the skateboarders go. Got a few really good pictures of people doing their tricks. One guy came up insisted I delete all pictures of him. I showed him all the pictures I had taken and it did two things. First, he realised I didn't get any shots of him, and the ones I got of some of the other skaters were actually not bad. I think if you are in public with a 'proper' camera, you will get some unwanted attention. It's just human nature.

The following is from the Avon and Somerset Police website, which I use whenever I am challenged in public:
"There is no law preventing people from taking photographs in public. This includes taking photos of other people’s children.
If you are taking photographs from private land, you need to have the land owner’s permission. Taking a photo of a person where they can expect privacy, such as inside their home or garden, is likely to cause a breach of privacy laws.
Unless the images which have been taken are indecent, no one has the right to:
    ask a photographer to stop
ask for a copy of the photos
force a photographer to delete the photographs
    Report concern about indecent photos"
    Hope this help.

Yes, but it's not helpful to openly fight a widely held misbelief. I believe in working WITH the problem, not trying to fight it. It's not going to go away no matter how many statements are issued by the police saying you are right, (and actually although they are right on this occasion) they aren't the founts of knowledge we think they are. People are legitimately sensitive about being photographed. In Wells last year a nice chap approached my husband and I (being fascinated in that bastion of 'whiteness' to come across a happy bi-racial and asked could he photograph us. And even though, as photographers, we are very sensitive and kind to other photographers, I wanted to know his purpose and might well have been annoyed if he had simply arrived on scene, taken his pot shot and left!

Brian, I do feel for you and can relate to what you had experienced too of late. I am a street photographer for many years, and never subjected to abuse nor aggressive behaviour until a few weeks ago. They even "make a citizen arrest of me!", called the police and subjected me to a torrent of abuse, telling the police that I am a pervert and a paedophile. A couple intervened and tried to calmly explain it to them that there is no law against taking photos of people, even children, in public but they were even threatened! I certainly did feel that the mood is fast changing, especially in the past couple of months. It's so sad, but you must not give in to such intimidation. I certainly will not, and I feel that you should report it to the police as a threat against your safety. In my case, the police listened to them for 10 minutes, told them to go away and let them handle the situation with me. When they were gone, one of the policemen said to me, "Wow, he is not happy" and said to me literally, "You can go now"! That's how to defuse the situation, and he knew perfectly well that I have not broken the law.

This is an Interesting point as ive made sure ive not had people in my pictures for a long time now. When in China, people ran up and asked me to take pictures of them. In the UK ive waited until people are not in the shot, some even asked why I wait and dont want people in my pictures, I say because I dont want them in them.
Its a very odd mindset in the UK now, a generation fed on social media snapshot selfies, idealism, fake information and mental health issues. Its not about you, its their problem and mindset.

I happened to me, I was also physically assaulted I was pushed with a two handed shove onto a rocky slope, I was 63 at the time and not in the best of health, I took some photos too close to some ones property apparently, then it all kicked off the guy was in his late 30s early 40s. So I photographed him on my back coming at me again with a mad hate look and outreached hands. I legged it to my car and when I got home contacted the police and sent them the photos and his address. ( I google earthed it) he was arrested the next day Sunday 6am kept 24 hrs until his wife lied for him and said she was there (not) and I fell and he was reaching the help me up. Still wary of people now at 69, don't tend to take the same photos as before (disused railway infrastructure). I can see from your demena you are badly shaken and that is wrong, it does get better but it also will still be in the back of your mind. Keep strong and in good health.

So long as the photos are taken in a public place, e.g. a park it is perfectly legal to take photos of anything and anyone, even children in the UK. Dear Brian: Don't lose heart! That young woman is obviously a wounded creature who lashes out. She does not possess "tools" in her "toolbelt" to properly articulate herself. Maybe she isn't that intelligent? (Rhetorical question.) Her age already works against her (teenagers can be so cruel.) Plus, she lacked the courage to address you without her gang to back her up (typical teenager.) I don't know how she was broken but I do know there are MANY people like her out there. All that said, I highly encourage you to continue with your street photography! If you surrender your joy, your passion, your photography to such bullies, they win and you lose. I have a hypothesis about bullies and cowards: 1:1 ratio: One part bully = one part coward. This has been my personal experience and my personal observations. There's a wounded child in that adolescent body (as well as her friends) but that should not prevent you from your street photography. Maybe you just need to put on your Thick-skinned Brian Protective Armor to prevail when you are out there? You are a very honorable man with great integrity. Sorry to hear this happened to you. It happens far too often these days and isn’t pleasant when it happens. Male photographers get this more than women, but even female photographers I know have had incidents recently. I think street photographers are taking the backlash for our increasingly monitored society. Everyone is photographed numerous times a day by police and security cameras, but the guy with the camera is an easy target. Try not to let this incident get you down too much. A way to work your way back to street photography would be to start with events, markets, concerts and the like. Until you’re ready to get back in the street photography saddle, historic areas and woodlands make for good photo walks.

It's not just happening in street photography Brian this happens everywhere, i do a lot of music nightclub rave festival photography and have been threatened several times over the last 15 years, had my camera grabbed, been punched in the face, tripped up, bum pinched, been threatened to have the camera thrown in the water at an outdoor event, even had cameras stolen, I just see it as humans that are either evolutionally wired wrong or just too drunk, luckily the events I'm at have security which deal with these characters but out on the streets it can get a bit scary i took a notion for doing some night photography around Glasgow city centre a few years back, I wasn't really harassed by anyone, more just dirty looks from some people but felt vulnerable whenever i came across group of people hanging about, on a few occasions I had to evade them and ended up just going home. I soon realised it was maybe not a good idea at night lol, early morning photography on the streets was better as there is hardly anyone around, only drawback is that summer is almost finished, I don't think you should quit at all Brian perhaps turn towards another places that are a bit more chill. don't let them grind you down buddy. all the best!

Hi Brian. I’m sorry to hear about this. I have had the very same, multiple times. It’s horrible to be accused of something you’re not doing.
I was videoing Christmas decorations in a shopping centre and got stopped by security and even THEY started hinting that I might be a pervert. It happened to me in a car park, when I was videoing its church. A lady pulled up in front of me, got out and started to verbally abuse me for having her in my shot. I had a go back and then she accused me of videoing her child. I saw red and went on the attack. She backed off. Afterwards, I thought, Why should I stop videoing because of people with nasty thoughts?’
I watched a lot of drone videos where the guy got pulled up by security and watching him deal with these ignorant people gave me the courage and skills to face up to these dirty minded individuals.
It worked. They back off very quickly because I just let them know that I don’t have the disgusting, dirty thoughts that they themselves have in their heads.
Don’t give up because of those idiots. They are looking for trouble and will use any verbal tool to gain power over you. Once you accuse them of dirty thoughts, they begin to lose their power.
Contrast in USA …. I went into a tobacco shop. Asked to video. The owner said, ‘Please do’ and then he asked if he could be in it! Led to an interview with him about his shop. I spoke to him about the UK and our obsession with perverts. He said that as far as he was concerned, videos were good, free publicity and nothing to do with catching people on video. He then went on to say that maybe THEY have problems, not me!
Stick at it. Fire back about their disgusting thoughts.

On the one hand, it feels like everyone takes a (however aesthetic) selfie of themselves at every opportunity, but on the other hand, some people seem to feel that their personal rights are threatened just by having the sole of a shoe photographed.
Basically, the result is that in 50 years' time we will probably have hardly any usable contemporary documents - apart from millions and millions of wide-angle distorted selfies...

It is happening very fast in this country. There is a very low level of tolerance and total lack of awareness that in the UK, there is no law against taking photos or videos in public, even of children. So long as it is not indecent or used for criminal or illegal use, we are totally free to take whatever we want. No one, even the police, can force us to show them the photos or delete the photos from the camera. I've even taken photos of the MI6 building from the road in Central London and the security there did not even bother to approach me. I've spoken to some security guards in Liverpool Street Station and they told me that I'm free to take photos there so long as I do not overtly seek out the hidden security cameras!

To be fair, I was a bit worried about doing street photography in Germany. However, I did 3 days in Munich and 4 days in Cologne. No problems at all, in fact people very polite. Could be luck or could be that big cities are different?

@@thetoovmeister9799In Germany, it really depends on where you are. Cities are usually more progressive, some small towns in Germany are also very friendly - you should just ask first.
But overall, taking photos of strangers is not particularly welcome.

@@ThatMicro43Guy Thanks for that clarification, but even so, they need to cite the reason is because they suspect the photographer as a potential terrorist. To seize the camera equipment, the police also need to have a court order allowing them to do so in the first place.

Sorry to hear about this negative experience. Swearing at someone in public can be an offence under the Public Order Act 1986 if it causes harassment, alarm, or distress. It’s not specifically covered by PACE, but if someone’s behaviour makes you feel threatened or uncomfortable, you can report it to the police, and they might take action depending on the situation.

This is the first time I have seen one of your videos. I am sorry this happened to you. My advice to you as a member of the older generation is "don't give up". Don't let the actions of a few entitled brats keep you from doing what you cleatly love to do. All the best to you.

Once I had a problem with a drunk who wantwd to fight because he thought I wanted to photograph him. He does not deserve me to quit my hobbie. But I understand you and hug you.

Sorry to hear about the negative reaction. You could always try photographing the many charter trains which pass through Carlisle Railway Station. Take care and keep up being creative.

I've had few very nasty situations. Few months ago it was so bad, that I've stop taking pictures on the streets. I'm slowly recovering, and I came to conclussion that this is inevitable. Please don't give up!

Brian, keep on taking pictures. You are capturing history. I wish I had taken pictures of my town in the past if only to document how the council etc have ripped the heart out of it. Just watched the rest as I commented before the end, I can see how much this upset you. Hopefully with the support you receive you will carry on.

Times have changed unfortunately. 10 years ago I didn't think anything of going out in public places with an SLR mounting a 100-400. Now I hip shoot with a Fuji x70. Strangely enough the wide angle hip shots are better 😄
