      if there existed a God who answered prayers and intervened in human affairs, “we would be living under an unalterable celestial dictatorship that could read our thoughts while we were asleep and convict us of thought crime and pursue us after we after are dead, and in the name of which priesthoods and other oligarchies and hierarchies would be set up to enforce God’s law.” Essentially, we’d be living in a supernatural Orwellian world.

      Ding-ding-ding(a-ling - sorry) We HAVE found a Winner to 'the' question asked in the comments 'above' folks !!! Marios Athalakis has hit the nail on the head. Introspect, I'm sure, was key to finding the answer... unfortunately, we are almost as likely to write a letter on stationary and send it Air Mail than we are to simply look in the mirror, at ourselves and it seems to b e a lost art to be able see, understand much less respect any other perspective other than our own... Walking a mile in my Shoes... just ain't happening anymore. The question (if you scrolled past it) was Why don't people share these shameful thoughts, fears or fantasies, wild outrageous passing curiosities or cravings with honestly with or intimate partners in a healthier 'safe place' exploration of the difference in normal human thoughts and desire to act out or experience the crazy notion..... Just because anytime some says something taste like shit, MY mind instantly thinks 'how do they know what shit taste like ?? Which leads to me wonder what shit REALLY taste like and how closely the taste what that person just ate was... I start to imagine what Shit might taste like BUT as many times as my mind has wallowed in those taboo thoughts , I never once considered chewing on a turd... Damn maybe I shouldn't have revealed this odd trigger in my mind, I might get 300 Shit sandwich jokes before lunch... .......Ugh....
      Nevermind !!!!!

      How people respond to hearing your fantasies will tell you how emotionally mature they are.
      If someone responds by saying things that make you feel ashamed - they are likely less mature.
      For example:
      If you tell a TV newscaster you fantasize about being probed by aliens, they are likely to recoil.
      If you tell the same thing to an 80 yr old therapist, they are likely to say it's perfectly normal.
      Sending love,

      is it? how do you know? her perception of the event must vary from yours. And as a human yourself, you put too much weight towards your subjective interpretations without ever considering the objective reality of your perspective, which makes you biased towards certain assumptions such as how humans perceive the flow of time.

    • @MonkeyDLuffy-xr4fl
      @MonkeyDLuffy-xr4fl 7 років тому +17

      How do you know you're being objective right now? How can you be so certain she didn't die with a gnawing sense of solitude and melancholy while lying in bed covered in her own faeces? How can you be certain such a- objectively speaking- horrendous experience would have pleased her in her death bed? Before commenting on others' personal experiences, think again; they do not have to align with yours, and they're not wrong if they don't.

    This video definitely resonates with me. Whenever i'm not partaking in something I'm pretty much living my fantasy, my ideal self living my ideal life not bound by the limitations of life. Some would say it's a form of self-torture as you can fall into the trap of mourning this unreachable goal and get bogged down by the conventionalities of reality. But I never want to lose them as they bring me so much joy, much more than real life, all your emotion is in your mind anyway so why not give yourself a nice fix. It also teaches you alot about yourself and some of my fantasies have partly come true in real life. Sometimes I like to think that if you believe something is true, it may manifest itself in unexpected ways, making life just a little more exciting.
    Anyone who feels embarrassed about them or thinks they are a waste of time, we literally spend 1/3 of our lives in the dream world, not because we want to, we are actually forced to. If we don't sleep and escape reality we will go crazy and probably die. As humans we have to surrender to the dream world every night. We were given these dreams for a reason. Our lives are also very short in the grand scheme of things so taking them too seriously and not exploring everything at our disposal feels like a missed opportunity. I do like to think that maybe some version of our fantasy is waiting for us when we do depart this earth, we are just preparing for them at the present moment.

  • @bolivar1789
    @bolivar1789 7 років тому +23

    Thanks a lot for this very wise lesson and for the wonderful animation!
    1. I remembered a terribly interesting " Invisibilia" podcast about our darkest thoughts and fantasies. The episode is called " The Secret History of Thoughts".Especially the one story about the poor guy who so deeply loved his wife but at the same time desperately wanted to cut her throat was so touching:-( One day he watched a very brutal movie, City of God, with his wife and from then on, he had all those terrible, bloody fantasies. He went from one psychologist to another. And all of them had a different approach. But the most clever one came up with this explanation:
    Let's think of someone who has OCD. He is so afraid of microbes and bacteria etc. that he imagines them everywhere and therefore washes his hands all the time.
    So the guy with all the violent fantasies had a similar condition. He was so horrified by violence that, he thought it could appear anytime, anywhere,and even in his hands. So he had all those dark thoughts not because he himself was violent, but the opposite: he was a very tender person who was horrified by any possibility of violence.
    The good news is, through this explanation he found peace and relief and he got everything under control.
    2. So we must not feel guilty or abnormal because of our strange fantasies and thoughts. But we must certainly pay enough attention to them. Marc Aurel says that over the course of our lives our soul gets the colour of our thoughts. It is so important to have those colours more less in check, so that we don't end up all dark and bitter.
    3. When you have thoughts or fantasies that do no good to you and you want to have a distance from them, meditation helps a lot:
    Alain de Botton's " Philosophical Meditation" is extremely helpful. They have a video about it on this channel. Don't miss it! You could then print the questions below the video and go through them at least once a week. When I wished a colleague of mine to get a heart attack, Alain's questions helped me a lot.
    In addition to that you can also use the Mindfulness Meditation. You could search for this on Itunes and start today:
    UCLA Hammer Meditation.
    I have watched a lesson on Mindfulness from Yale University on youtube. The teacher there recommended these guided meditation podcasts. They are extremely helpful! There are episodes like:
    Working with repetitive thoughts
    Working with obstacles etc.
    4. But as this beautiful lesson mentions, fantasies can be very helpful too.
    There is a very cute song called " Just my Imagination".
    You must definitely listen to it from Brushy One String! He is a Jamaican guitarist, also called
    " The King of One String". He made an entire album on that string!! He is such a great musician that when you hear him playing you'll feel like hearing an "imaginary" band playing behind him somehow. I am sure he does that too! I mean he probably has an entire band in mind while playing alone. Good metaphor for life indeed...
    Thank God we have the capacity to find refuge in our imagination and hang out there with whoever we want, without getting into trouble. Life would be a hell otherwise.
    5. I also wanted to share a wonderful poem, from one of our most beloved poets,
    Orhan Veli ( 1914-1950, Istanbul ). What a pity he died so young...
    WOOL GATHERER
    This is the work I do:
    I paint the sky each morning
    While all you people are asleep,
    You wake up to find it blue.
    Sometimes the sea gets ripped;
    Do you know who mends it?
    I do.
    At times I just daydream,
    That's my job too;
    I dream of a head in my head,
    Of a belly in my belly,
    Of a foot in my foot,
    I just don't know what the hell to do.

      Lua Veli I have something similar. I love my cats with all my heart, but I hate being around them with a knife in my hand or something really heavy because I am afraid that one day I will snap and hurt them. @@meganxotchilt Hello there Megan! You are most welcome! Thanks a lot for your time! I will take the opportunity to give you one more recommendation that could really interest you.It is a podcast called " Dear therapists" with Guy Winch and Lori Gottlieb. Those are real therapy sessions where you have one person talking about a problem that could happen to any of us and two therapists listening and asking the most wise and helpful questions. I sometimes imagine how i'd troll people after I die. Especially if I was rich. Like set up this big treasure hunt with all these clues and have it be a real big thing. When they go through all the riddles they'll eventually find this big treasure chest they dig up, and instead of having money inside, i'll write a little note saying " congratulations, this is the end of your quest. You've now learned that the greatest treasure of all was inside you all along, the treasure of team work and friendship."
    Or, if not, i'll be dying, and i'll pull my realitive real close and say, "Listen up Janie... I want you to know that... all my life savings... I've hid them at-" and then die, while I'm laughing in heaven.

Often, I myself have thoughts I think are terrible and this video has helped me to realize that coming to accept these thoughts as mere childhood imaginings is a good stepping stone to coming to terms with my relative insanity. Reuben U I’d argue that this only works for the toughts you don’t like, it’s normal for the brain to think of bad things that we don’t like. But that fantasies (ex: rape) do have an impact on you

    • @eliannaten3979

      psychosis is a spectrum of human behavior, not applicable to this discussion. that said i think the difference is how we react to these fantasies. do we view them as ideals and work to bring them to fruition? if so, that is thoughts becoming action. it is impossible for a human being to completely regulate their thoughts, the majority of which arise from unconscious processes.

    I always fantasize about cutting people open and caressing their hearts or lungs, and feeling the lungs and hearts movements in drawing in air or circulating blood. Then I would record their breathing and heartbeats for me to fall asleep to. Sometimes it will be me experimenting on these random people to hear the different sounds of the body when stressed differently. It makes me feel really cozy thinking about all these playlists of these peoples bodily sounds I don't know why.

    Ok. SchoolOfLifers, serious question: if a recovering drug addict has fantasies about using drugs again, is that considered, 'making reservations for relapse,' or could it just be a way of imagining active using without the real life consequences of physical & psychological dependence . . ? The video says we fantasize instead of preparing, and how fantasies are a way our mind talks to us about anxiety... could it be the addiction illness trying to takeover or could it be a way of just entertaining the cravings in a way where no actual real-life relapse is at stake?
    peace and love to you all, thank you in advance for any replies.

The little man/woman sticking it to the evil boss, suppressor, corp or state or the little man/woman turning the power structure on its head from system to a individual with special powers. It's a short societally moment of shared relive for bottled up anger and felt helplessness.

    I have never had a violent fantasy directed at another person so I honestly can't understand it... And the idea that people around me might be fantasizing about killing or torturing others is really upsetting. That can't be normal right? I do have depression so fantasize about being terribly violent towards myself, but those kinds of thoughts are clinically recognized by my doctor as abnormal. In terms of other fantasies I always assumed everyone was similar to me insofar as having purely hedonistic fantasies (endless wealth, kittens, chocolate, the power to stop time, going back in time and saving everyone who died in a disaster.. etc.)
